Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

Jurz is happy to go and sit next to Moffa, and look over the chasm.  "Dis could be a nice place for a tribes to lives.  'Cept dere isn't any outsides ..."  Then he barfs, and watches the spray descend into the  space below his feet.

Dregz grins broadly as Bully races out of the stinky fog, but the smile is swiftly wiped from his face as his breakfast makes a preliminary sortie, and is forced to hurriedly retreat to join the biggun at the ledge as his last meal finally breaks free.

"HRRUUURRRRGHH !" says the little goblin, repeating it a few times for those who didn't hear him.

Minmorc easily removes the wand from the dragon's mouth. He is now the only one not losing their breakfast and the only one still in the fog cloud. Perhaps next round he will be joining the team in that as well?

(You have to make a DC14 Fort save each round you stay in the fog.)

Minmorc will wander out and tuck the wand into Bullies belt. He will pat him consolingly on the back and will then wander back into the fog. He will see if he can yank the statues off their hinges, if he can he will throw them towards the doorway and will move on to the next one.

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

It takes another three rounds before Minmorc's belly finally gives up his breakfast too. That is just long enough for him to use his adamantine greataxe to slice through the brass hinges beneath the feet of the gnomish cleric statue and carry it out of the nauseating fog.

Everyone recovers from the nausea within a few rounds but repeated entry into the fog results in more bouts of debilitating nausea, so there isn't too much progress in exploring the barred cave until the fog disperses after about 5 minutes.

The four statues were a human warrior, an elvish mage, a gnomish cleric and a halfling thief, all fully equipped and armoured for adventure. The human warrior and gnomish cleric are actually wearing full plate armour and the halfling thief wears a shirt of fine mithril links, so they are clearly meant to represent an experienced and well-equipped group of adventurers. Closer inspection reveals that these statues are actually fine examples of the taxidermist's art – they really were the bodies of a human, an elf, a gnome and a halfling before they met this gruesome fate.

The dragon skin and skeleton were once a huge green dragon but are clearly hundreds of years old.

The racks along the southern wall of the narrow cave turn out to hold dozens of other body parts of a wide range of creatures native to all sorts of environments, above and below ground.

While waiting for the fog to clear there was also ample time for exploration of the lower caves below the small cliff where the team sat and emptied their stomachs. There are no conveniently placed ladders this time but Jurz' and Dregz' boots of levitation provide an easy way to navigate the short cliffs that separate the lower cave levels. Two levels down you find a large opening at the eastern end of the lowest cave. That turns out to be a cave opening on the eastern side of a huge stalactite hundreds of feet above the subterranean lake in the great cavern, with a clear view of the City of Pedestal spreading around the huge stone column of the Necromancer's Spike on the eastern side of the lake.

Two of the lower caves were clearly the nests of the two wyverns that were slain at the Nuffleball game. There are plenty of splintered bones of various animals but nothing of value in those nests. But at least there doesn't appear to be anything else living down here either.

Minmorcs eyes mist over as the dream he never had of owning a full set of life sized puny good guy action figures is briefly realised. He'll then assist the party in looting them and getting ready to depart. He will request however, naked gnome in hand and moon door before him, that he wants to see the little man fly.

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

Jurz is glad to find the opening so high up above the city, and steps right up to the edge, before he calls out  "Here Rog.  Come on.  Good boy Rog." and waits for the great bat to arrive.  Then when the beast arrives he makes a great fuss of it, scratching and stroking just like he would have done with Rog the Dog.

Then leaving the bat by the entranceway, he makes his way back up to the others and looks over the loot, although there is nothing else there for him.  However, he does inspect the dragon skin, to see if it is still in good enough condition to make a suit of armour from.

"Maybe you'se should take dat armour.  De plate might be a bit heavy, but de halfling's chain should be OK." he comments to Dregz.

It is good to see the familiar shape of Rog the Bat again and Dregz enjoys watching Jurz pet his friend.  Though indeed anything would be better than staring over the edge at the city far, far below.  "Can youse see der Nuffleball pitch from der ?" he asks, not wanting to get close enough to look for himself.

"Ise got wun !" the priest taps his own Mithral chainshirt proudly.  "Izza guddun !"

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

Closer inspection confirms that the huge green dragon's hide and bones are hundreds of years old but in remarkably good condition. They could indeed be used for making items such as armour.

Stripping the four statues turns up a few other interesting things as well.

The human fighter was a big man, by human standards. He is wearing plate armour that is clearly of masterwork quality and carried an ordinary-looking greatsword.

The gnomish cleric was wearing small-sized plate armour that is also of masterwork quality. He carried a steel shield and a morningstar. When the armour is stripped off it is discovered that the gnome was also wearing an uncomfortable-looking hair shirt and had a reddish-orange gemstone tucked away in his belt pouch.

The elvish mage wears a dark green robe and has a silvery rod in one hand and a fist-sized glass orb in the other hand. Strange, meaningless words seem to constantly flash across the surface of the glass orb. The silvery rod has a pale blue gem at each end.

The halfling thief wears a fine-quality mithril shirt partially concealed beneath a dark green cloak. He has a silver dagger in one hand and a short wooden cudgel in the other. The wooden cudgel is about one foot long and has a crudely carved animal face of some kind at its head.

Minmorc has to rig a couple of ropes to allow him to climb down to the cave opening that he delights in calling the moon door. He is only slightly hampered by the unclothed, stuffed gnome statue, which he holds out as he pauses to admire the scenery. The dark waters of the underground lake hundreds of feet below reflect the lights of the City of Pedestal at the edge of the lake. However, there is a dark patch in the lake directly below the huge stalactite you are looking out from. That dark patch seems to be some sort of island, so Minmorc's hopes of a gnome-shaped splash are not going to be fulfilled. Looking towards the city also reveals that the nuffleball field was on the opposite side of the city, furthest away from the lake and not easily seen from this vantage point.

Because Gnomes aren't very aerodynamic (unlike elves that can be thrown like javelins) he will opt to hold it by the feet and throw it like a hammer, aiming for the little island. He likes the thought that some Sherlock type might investigate the mystery of the taxidermied Gnome, good luck deducing that it had been part of a trap in the lair of a Drow wizard and hammerthrown by a childish Ork!

He is happy to help the party stash any valuable gear and get to what ever ledge they want to jump from. He'll trust the Goblins to come up with a way to survive the descent as his best plan involves using the luxurious bed sheets as a parachute and Orcish fizziks. (Orcish fizziks are like human physics but at a -2 intelligence.)

While he doesn't have anything like the skills of Moffa, nor the ability to work out much about magical items, Jurz casts detect magic and looks over the  stuff that was in the dragon lair trap.  Although he is particularly interested in the halflings cudgel.

"hey Dragzy, do youse fink dis as a gods face?" he asks holding the club up, then continues with "I's wants some armour made from dat dragon skin.  Dey say it is better dan any ovver sort of levver for making armours."

Dregz regards the face on the club.  It certainly looks more animal than goblin, though that doesn't preclude it being one of the more bestial monstrous deities.

"Could bese," he vouchsafes in a non-committal tone.

The glass orb with the flashing words, on the other hand might just be displaying messages from Bargrivyek or another god.

With his Magic Stick in hand, just in case, the priest eyeballs it, hoping to determine if it is providing useful information ... or is just a lot of magical nonsense.
