Re: OOC Discussions

Hello everyone!  Looking forward to this game.

I live in Mozambique where the Tabletop RPG hobby basically does not exist, so my only RPG outlet is via forums.   Over several years of playing in various forums, I have ended up only being active in RPOL.   Despite its rather tight-arsed rules and moderators, I have found it to me much easier to play in than the off-the-shelf forum software which other sites use.

Hey,

I'm in the US but there is no RPG'ing here either (small town). I, however, don't have much forum experience. I pick up things pretty quick but if I do something off, please let me know. After all, you can't fix something if you don't know it's broken.

For the character creation, were you just wanting the fields you have listed filled and the abilities, or did you want the full sheet and the character fleshed out?

Just the listed fields for the RTJ, but since you are already here, fill out the character sheet.

I just need a name for your character so I can set the character sheet up.

As for not having a lot of gaming experience, shouldn't be a problem. That was the whole point of the Basic game... even kids could learn it.

How do we fill out our backgrounds?  Is this set somewhere specific in Mystara?

Yeah, I'll fill in the mechanics detail... as soon as I get to it.

The game is set in Glantri City.

Any of the following would be appropriate as background hooks:

emissary
wanderer
native of Glantri
traveling merchant/minstrel
mercenary looking for work
delivering a message as a favor or mini-quest
just passing through on the way to somewhere else
seeking fame and fortune
pursuing magical studies

The meteor struck in 1006.
The Wrath of the Immortals occured in 1010-1013.
Current date is 1056.

Glantri is mostly the same. The monsters beseiged the city and were driven off by the Heldannic Knights.

Glantri has suffered severe economic problems ever since, and is only slowly recovering.

Clerics are no longer outlawed, but they are still 'unwanted and discouraged'.

Okay, I haven't played BECMI version in years.  With all the clones out there I'm muddling some of the rules.

Do spellcasters receive bonus spells for high scores?
Are there attribute or racial bonuses to thief skills?

I'm playing a Viridian, essentially a reskinned version of an elf.  Though with 2 elves already, perhaps we need another straight up spellcaster or thief or fighter.

Kareth has probably heard whispers about the Radiance, but he'll know about the Day of Dread, also known as the Wrath of the Immortals. It was a day 44 years ago when all magic ceased to exist. It lasted for a week before the magic came back.

It caused a lot of upheaval, and nothing has quite been the same since.

OK, so there are free dwarves in Glantri nowadays. And, it seems, halflings. And clerics.

If I recall, Alfheim has been destroyed in this timeframe?

Are any of the GAZ3 - era princes and principalities different in this campaign/timeframe?

And the Radiance is no longer a hidden secret that requires years of research to even get a hint of? I refer to the mention of the Radiance in relation to the magical necklace.

Thanks, just want a clear picture.

Re: Equipment

Whew! You know a lot more about Mystara than I do!

I was never a big fan of mass alterations to countries and borders. It kind of got back to the old Greyhawk map... in theory, your PCs could go out and conquer the Duchy of Urnst, but there was no way you could change the borders on the map or even the name. So what was the point of having this huge full color map if it stopped being accurate after a month of play?

I haven't read most of the GAZ in any detail, and when I did, it was 20 years ago!

I guess I'm stuck with Alfheim having been destroyed.

The whole point of Glantri getting besieged by the hordes is that everything changed afterwards. Some changes were big and obvious, some were small and subtle. Some lasted, some didn't. Some were good, some were bad.

The secret of the Radiance became less of a secret, particularly now that it was 'tainted'. Glantri discovered the hard way that it couldn't be so damn arrogant and survive. But just because Ember Rain is tossing around the term 'Radiance' rather cavalierly doesn't mean everyone knows about it.

Because there have always been heirs to the thrones, the principalities have remained, and were rebuilt when devastated. No matter what you take away from them, the land always remained.

There are now 13 principalities. Some have risen and fallen in prominence, and there are only 4 of the personalities that remain from the time before, and even they are getting old.

Belcadiz is the only one that has remained 'unscathed'. That's not to say they haven't had their share of troubles, but none of them were so devastating that they couldn't recover.

The one that suffered the worst was Averoigne.

Re: Equipment

I am a big fan of Mystara, and most especially of Glantri! But I don't go around memorizing gaming supplements. It just happens that in the game I'm running I'm planning on having the party go to Glantri soon, so I've read up on it recently.

You and I are somewhat kindred spirits, it seems. I see no reason to muck up a game setting that I've bloody-well paid for, and to change whatever it was that I liked about it in the first place. I want to use that setting for a good long time, and that means that I don't change the status quo in my campaigns. So my games use the GAZ series as-is, and while characters may become heroes, the Prince remains the Prince, and as with you, the borders don't change.

This is why I reject any changes to a campaign history that I don't create in my own games. Especially changes made by a publisher, "advancing" a timeline. I think Glantri rocks, and I wouldn't want to mess with it myself, because then it follows that it will rock less.

So, while I bought the products that changed Mystara, I breezed through them once and put them on the shelf (if I even still have them). So, you surprised me when I learned that this game was set after that whole explosion thing.

I may make some mistakes IC, so if I do I trust you'll allow me to go back and edit them.

Re: Equipment

It's got some plazas and walkways. :) You said we were in a marketplace, so I assumed in 'the' marketplace, which is decidedly dry. And the second largest plaza in the city.

The laws I was quoting IC are in the GAZ, though. I wasn't making up something and trying to influence your campaign, I thought I was playing the setting. Glantri is described as a country by and for spellcasters, called "Arcaners." Anyone who isn't a caster is a "Mundaner," and is a 2nd-class citizen in a very real way. Those thugs who insulted Rodrigo were due for a stint in the Citadel of Sighs, getting tortured, just for insulting him. And the justice system uses ESP spells to verify what happened. They can't even argue in court unless they get a license for public speaking, in advance.

So, if clerics are no longer outlawed, but are still "unwanted and discouraged," have they been given the 1st-class citizenship of an "Arcaner?"

Oh, Glantri is and should be old school. And I know much, much less than most Mystara fans, and can't be bothered with trivia. But the points I brought up are the defining characteristics of Glantri. It's a mageocracy, in a microcosm of Europe. Otherwise you could set a game just anywhere... ;)

My pc only has a couple of lines of background, too, never fear. And there's nothing wrong with dungeon-romping from where I'm sitting! Truly, I'm having loads of fun, and happy to roll with our DM.

Re: Equipment

One of the reasons I set the timeline 50 years into the future was so I wouldn't have to worry too much about that kind of detail, figuring that enough time had passed that things could have changed to accommodate any inconsistencies.

But, yeah, Glantri is a mageocracy... their arrogance stemmed from their belief that all the magic of Mystara came from the Radiance, which was under Glantri City. When the hordes from the crater besieged the city, that arrogance was taken down a peg, since all their vaunted magical superiority didn't 'protect' them.

They were rescued by the Heldannic Knights, taking them down another peg.

Then, when the magic went away, that arrogance was taken down yet another peg or two. Clerics were suddenly 'the power'.

Anyway, things aren't always what they seem. Just because they were 'thugs' in appearance and demeanor doesn't mean they couldn't do magic, even it was only a tiny bit. Also, it wasn't them that were 'magic immune', it was a protection that the pub had because the owner was tired of having his placed trashed by magic.

Corruption still occurs, but in a bureaucracy, it often becomes SOP. There's no ethics, and there can never be enough rules and laws that cover every contingency.

So then, I have no idea of where to lead the IC conversation. Without any guidance, I was going to suggest that we return to that tavern and try a little investigation. Either to obtain the presumed anti-magic item (reward, reward!) or to spy on whatever was so secret. But if my character's assumptions were not in accord with the setting, then my thought is to sit with my new friends for a bit, eating and drinking, until something happens.

Anneth's fortune telling is part "legitimate business", and part "I'm going to do some cold-reading and see if I can't find out about adventure!".  While she is interested in funding her research in a steadier way, she's one of those ill-adjusted apples that decided adventure would be a good way to fund things, as well.  So, she's flexible!

This adventure/campaign isn't 'carved in stone'. I'm pretty much making it up as I go along. Just because I said something above doesn't mean that's what would happen. I ony mentioned the thugs and the anti-magic inn as an example of not everything is always as it appears.

Was your character wrong? Not necessarily. I was trying to point out that there are other ways to interpret events, and you shouldn't lock yourself into a single option.

If you want to go to the pub and investigate, that's perfectly reasonable.

Re: Absence

Rukao Faestalker:
"And last I heard, as a rule they don't even let elves into this city. No magic, you know. Never heard of an elf without magic... But I ain't exactly the one making the calls either," he seemed to have a little doubt about this part, but one might also gather from his tone that he had been around here for a while without seeing any elves.

So I'm lost on this one. Elves (and magic) not allowed in this city? Perhaps he meant, not in this pub?

And by the way, Rodgrigo's original intent was to go into a Caurenzian cafe he knew of, for an espresso, the "hot drink" he loves too well. I'll just ignore that though, as this place looks like a tiki bar, with a "no magic" rule.

But if this is really a "no magic" bar in the City of Mages, they might put a sign out front! There aren't any thugs at the door anymore...

EDIT: And they have magic disappearing doors, and they're using an anti-magic spell?!

Who said that Rukao was necessarily well informed about such matters? There is a no magic using policy in the city-- and elves are so rare that it is highly unlikely he'd ever bump into one even after being in the city for a while.

So he merely presumed that no elves weren't allowed in the city based on his understanding of the policies.

If we're entirely OOC here, I'm pretty familiar with Gaz 3. YGMV, but elves are not rare, and there certainly is not a "no magic" policy in the country that exists by and for mages.

Again, our GM may do whatever he wants, but those would be two very major changes... No offense intended.

You are right. I misread a message from the GM and understood it backwards. You are supposed to be a mage here, not that they don't like mages.

He wrote "Glantri city doesn't like anyone who can't cast arcane magic" and I read it "Glantri city doesn't like anyone who can cast arcane magic" since well... a city that banned magic made a lot more sense to me.

Re: Absence

Perhaps-- he probably thinks the nobles are all mages and jealously guard their position by banning outsider spellcasters from the city. And thus, they would forbid non-citizen spellcasters, particularly elves. Because, well... they are creepily long-lived and that makes the human mages uncomfortable.

Otherwise, if chances are he would have seen elves within a couple weeks of being in the city, he'd have expressed much the same sentiment as the Dwarfs-- "there are way too many."

Mysterion:
One of those crime reports in Rukao's hand was about a burglary and a subsequent murder when the burglary went skew-whiff. It was a second story job, with the trademarks of Vengo Skurl, a minor prestidigitator who climbs up to the second story using nekode (cat's claws). The murder, by broken neck, however, was done by someone else who was bigger and stronger.

Rukao spotted Vengo sitting in the back corner booth. He was hoping Vengo would lead him to his partner in crime.

Sorry. Does Rodrigo read this on the papers? Or are you just giving Rukao a story lead? Thanks!

Probably. There's really no such thing as a reclusive mage in Glantri. Everyone is known for something.

I'd say Ember Rain's reputation is a mix of 'leave me alone', 'he's a nice guy', and 'don't mess with him'. He's not known for excessive show of magic--he doesn't flaunt it, but 'still waters run deep' may also apply.

He gives to the poor, attends council meetings, does some magic for sale, does some minor trading, and likes fine wines.

Anneth is Neutral, with Chaotic tendencies... She could be the bad cop!  Yes, give her a few more levels, and she'll be breaking into homes and casting invasive spells in the name of the law in no time!  Who gets to be the Fat Loveable Comic Relief Cop?

Maybe if Anneth casts find familiar, her familiar can be the wise-cracking animal sidekick!

It depends on what Rodrigo wants to do. He can approach to short range and shoot his bow at them, or he can continue into melee range. Certainly one of the hobgoblins had moved clse enough to attack Rodrigo, but since Rodrigo is on horseback, he can back out of combat.

Any time you say you are going to attack, it helps if you go ahead an make a dice roll.

The local authorities have no facilities for imprisoning that many hobgoblins. If the crime is serious, they are tried and executed if convicted. A moderate crime usually has them put in chains are forced to work at the mine or in the fields. Minor infractions are fined, and then they are released.

They are hobgoblins. You lose, you die. That's the law of the land.

However, if we're going by some other law... then they might have been justified in attacking the group if we 'invaded' their territory. Animals will threaten first, to drive you away, and attack only if that doesn't work. They skipped that first part, so I suspect that wasn't their motivation.

Borderline-Chaotic character.  Out for self.  Not out for truth, justice, and sweet little Halfling mommies.  Off 'em if it comes to it, otherwise a branding and a divesting of goods will work just fine!

It's not that we are bloodthirsty, it is just the law of the wildness. If I attacked someone and got taken out with a sleep spell, I would expect no better. And what is the difference between dispatching them when they are sleeping and killing them outright with an arrow? The moment that spell took them down their lives were over...

Computer Crash

My computer just gave up the ghost today. The screen stopped displaying anything, though it's lit up, so I'm figuring it's either the  monitor that somehow burnt out or else the videocard went out. Or maybe the hamster died.

Anyway, I can use my friend's computer on a more sporadic basis until I can get mine fixed or replaced.

Anyway, I'm still around; I just may not be able to stay on top of things all that quickly.

Goodbye

Dear fellows.

I am, very belatedly, writing to say that I am going to have this game up.   I like the setting and the story, I have just decided that after 12-ish hours per day chained to a computer for work, being battered by a constant barrage of emails, I cannot spend any more hours of my life typing on a laptop, when there are so many other things to do.

My apologies for going AWOL and not informing yous of this sooner.

Thanks to the GM and good hunting to the rest of you.

regards,
Kareth.

Nice map, thanks.

So we started in the sterncastle, and cleared out areas 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8? That was the halfling + his bodyguard and then the skeleton and the new PC Anya.

Then we went down through the stern hatch (9?) and got into the hold. So there is a lot more of the ship to search, isn't there? We still haven't found Anya's equipment.

Wee!  Yep, also curious about the Hit Points...aside from updating Thieving Abilities, 'Nettie's got to wait a couple of levels for To-Hit increases and/or Saving Throw increases, and it looks like...one level for Magic-User spells, and two for Cleric spells.

As it turns out, my time and energy seems to be getting affected by others so that I'm not on top of things gaming-wise as I once was. Partly it has to do with mom being sick, and now the holiday season is scrambling things up even more.

Anyway, don't panic! I'm still here.

I'm just letting you all know that if the game gets a bit slow, there's reason, particularly at this time of year.

However, if you are expecting a response from me, and don't get it within 2 days, feel free to PM me to wake me up!

Also, I wanted to see what kind of campaign/adventures you would like to have. In ftf games, you generally have some idea what your players want cause you usually are friends, or at least have been gaming together for awhile. It's one of those things that tends to get lost in pbp.

I've got lots of ideas, but I just want to make sure they are compatible with you guys.

Apologies for my lack of posting, but I've been sick this past week. It was bad enough Monday that I should have gone to the ER, according to my doctor, but by the time I saw my doctor, it had mostly passed. However, it did take its toll on me. My brain's been a brick and my body feels like it got run over by a herd of elephants.

I honestly didn't expect it to last the whole week, but then my car broke down on the highway on Friday on the way back from the doctor, dragging it out further.

My brain finally came back on-line yesterday, but body is still sore. I should start getting caught up on my posting later today.

Know ye oh princes, that across my games, across my realities, I declare that on this Saturn’s Day I withdraw from all my fictional lives until at the very least the Day of the Sun. For my real life dog-brother, the godsfather of my son declared a Slam, a day of Viking smoking, Tudor roasting and Caribbean drinking where we will lift our staffs of rum to long exiled spirits, mighty tales and illusions of grandeur. And perhaps, when we lift ourselves from our self-inflicted purgatory tomorrow this bloody real-life world will hear from us again.

But perhaps not.

Hey Everyone!

Stoked to join you guys, I'm a first time player online and irl so...I will probably say/do some dumb things, but bear with me, I'm a quick learner.

I guess my first dumb question is that I don't actually know how to make a character. And I hope I'm not stuck with the name 'brahspect' - I was under the impression that was just a website name, not a character name. AND...I'm looking at the old 1991 D&D rulebook, it is insanely complicated, or at least it is when you read about it instead of actually play it.

Anyways, I guess what I'm saying is that I'm stoked to play with you guys. And I need some help getting started, if someone doesn't mind showing me the ropes. Or at least give me a place to start by making a character haha. Thanks!

I don't know that I've ever actually seen the version you are talking about, so I have no idea what's in there.

You have a character sheet under Character Details button above.

There's a thread here for Character Generation. That should explain the easy parts. The Warlock is dealt with under the Classes Available thread.

Start filling out the character sheet with what you understand, and I'll help you with the rest.

And, yes, when you come up with a name for your character, I'll change it here.

You also might want to select a portrait. Just click on the button on the Character Details.

Hey Guys,

I'm going to roll for the rune deactivation right now, please correct me if I do this incorrectly - I'm not sure how the 'intelligence' factor comes into play, but if I emulate Fando, I'm just rolling 1d20 and that's all that needs to be done for this, correct?

Either way, I'll roll and we'll see what happens, and if I do it wrong, I'll do it right the next time. :)

Yeah, in the original game, there were no Skills, and no Difficulty Class or Target Numbers, so checks were all based on your Ability Score. At some point, I suppose you could subtract your level from the roll... to represent improved experience.

No problem. The Holidaze tend to produce a slow down in posting. It's already bit me.

On Turkey Day, I was thinking of Alice's Restaurant, too! I don't have it to play any more, but it's on my 'to buy' list.

I've always wondered how much people that weren't there at the time really appreciate the song. I've also always felt it was a brilliant piece of comedy...

Well, here ya go.  I think it was Thanksgiving two years ago that my mother suggested I listen to it, since I don't really celebrate the day, and couldn't meet up with my sister's husband's family because of my work schedule or something.  So I made myself a normal dinner, and listened to that.  Then, last year she was over, because again with the work schedules, and we had hard liquor and hamburgers, and listened to Alice's Restaurant.  This year, we FINALLY got around to celebrating with the in-laws (and hubby's father can make a mean turkey, and I normally hate those things and will only eat them out of courtesy).

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Santa brought you all lots of toys and goodies!

Alas, Santa didn't stop at our house this year as there aren't any children living here. Apparently being immature doesn't count.

Further confounding things is that we had to send mom to the ER in an ambulance Tuesday morning at 6:30am. She had pneumonia and fluid in her lung. She's better now; still in hospital but will probably get discharged tomorrow for the rehab center for about a week.

So it's been a rough week.

Re: Ship Map

Well, mom's been in the hospital 3 times in the last month, each time having to be sent in an ambulance. Just before Christmas it was pneumonia (a week in the hospital and 2 weeks in rehab), came home for three days and had to go back for a UTI and dehydration (4 days in hospital), came home against doctor's recommendation and promptly went back two days later for pneumonia again. She was discharged from the hospital Wednesday and went to rehab this time.

It's been a bit crazy and stressful, completely discombobulated my gaming mindset; I started to write my latest post about a week ago and then got interrupted, and now just getting back to it.

Anyway, just letting you know I'm still around. If, at any time, you get a bit impatient, feel free to send me a PM. It might not get a post, but at least I'll reply and let you know what's going on.

Re: Ship Map

Yeah, she's doing better. The issue is that she can't stay healthy. Something always comes up. She's been to the hospital six times in the last 7 months. Admittedly, the first three times were due to falls that we've now attributed to the micro-seizures she'd been having, but we didn't know about. She's now on meds that seem to be controlling them. So she's now found something else to be a problem.

Re: Ship Map

Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.

For those who may not have heard, eight days ago on Sunday night just after dinner, I suddenly developed a severe stomach pain--level 7. While I struggled with it for half an hour, figured it was probably food poisoning. It wasn't like any other stomach pain I'd ever experienced before. Then I wound up throwing up 4-5 times, though afterwards the pain level was only 5. An hour later, I threw up 2-3 more times and the pain level dropped to 3. And there it stayed. No more throwing up, and it didn't go away. I couldn't find any position where the pain was lesser, and it was too high to let me sleep. Finally called the EMTs about 1 a.m. and off to the ER I went.

A dose of femital (or something) dropped the pain to 1, and eventually it went completely away. However, the hospital continued to run its test to try and determine the cause. I'm not convinced that they ever did. One doctor concurred that it might have been food poisoning, but the other doctor concluded that it was a problem with my gallbladder and recommended I have it removed. He scheduled laposcopy surgery for Wednesday. If it went well, I'd be hope by Friday. Turned out it was in bad shape and required full abdominal surgery to remove it.

Let me tell you... in all those movies/shows when they talk about a painful wound to you abdomen, they aren't kidding! Every muscle in your chest and abdomen, and a few in your arms and legs, are all tied in together. So every deep breath, every burp, every hiccup, every yawn, every laugh, every cough causes excruciating pain! This is on top of the pain meds!

Every movement... sitting up, standing up, sitting down, laying down, stretching, reaching, bending... causes pain. One such movement at a time is usually okay, but then requires an hour of sitting still and getting over it.

Alas, the hospital's discharge procedure was rather inept on Sunday, and I wound up having to make a dozen such movements so that I could get my meds from the pharmacy before it closed. So after I got home and settled in, it took around 8 hours for the pain to subside.

It's slowly getting better, but will probably take 5-6 weeks for the surgery to completely heal and the pain to completely go away.

But, I'm back! Not sure how much I'll get to in the next two days... have to reorganize the house a bit as I'm mostly fending for myself.

Anyway, I apologize for the absence and lack of word.

UPDATE: the pain is gone, the staples removed, and things are going well. Unfortunately, sitting at the computer too long causes my abdomen and back to start hurting. Next time I see the doctor, I'll have to ask about that.

I mean, really, it sort of was supposed to take about 6 months for full recovery. I used to stay up late and do my posting then, but nowadays, I crash early (by llpm).

So I find it hard to keep up with all my games some days. I'm just tired a lot still. It does seem to be getting a bit better little by little. Not sure I'll ever get back to normal, though.

I've never been a morning person, but maybe that's because I don't drink coffee. Or is it the other way around?

Anyway, I crash early, and then wake up early, but don't get nearly as much done in the morning as I think I should. There's the usual chores and errands, meals, some 'mandatory' TV... but then I run out of steam. No brain-power left to think about games.

Still improving little by little. And I have loads of pain pills that I can take; they just don't help with the mental drain.

Well, some players want a faster posting game, but they are usually the ones that don't post unless the GM drags them around by the nose. That's just not my style of gaming or GMing.

And, rather than talk to the GM to let me know what they'd like to see, they just disappear.

Anyway, that's why I was checking to see if anyone was still around. I'm not quite as prolific in my posting any more. It may have been the surgery, or it just may be that I'm actually over the hill now.

10.5 days without power!

Lost power on the 9th just around noon as the hurricane passed by.

No power, no AC, no lights, no stove/microwave/toaster oven, no hot water, no TV, no computer, no modem, no internet.

Florida. Summer. Hot. Humid. Sat around in the dark and sweated. Didn't sleep well, didn't eat much.

Couldn't go anywhere since most places were also without power.

For a few days, gas was scarce, because most gas stations didn't have power, and so couldn't pump gas. The few that either had power or emergency generators had long lines and then ran out of gas. Tried getting by on ice, but so was everyone else, and ice quickly sold out.

Finally got power back about 8:30 last night.

So now we're cleaning up the mess.

It'll probably be another day or two before I get caught up on all my games.

As far as looting the crypt goes, are we going to have to play out lugging everything through the various traps, choke points, etc. of this dungeon? Or will we just hand wave it since we've apparently found all the hazards?

If we're going to play it out, we need more detailed lists about what's here in the final chamber. The list so far was a bit vague. If there's a lot of valuable and/or magical gear, we probably want to take as much as we can. And sorting out who gets what, if a lot of it is magical, could take some time.

This year, I made Thanksgiving dinner... turkey and all the fixin's... even made pies, though not from complete scratch. It's been so long since I made a turkey dinner, a few things turned out less than perfect, but still edible. The best part for me has always been the leftovers!

I'm curious about a couple of the items, before I commit to another one, though.  I want to pick what's best for the group as a whole.
-Do the Cat Gloves of Dexterity +4 confer bonuses to thieving abilities like they do in AD&D?
-Do Burglar's Bracers increase Open Locks by +2%?  So, my 20% becomes a 22%?

Yes, the Cat Gloves of Dexterity +4 confer bonuses to your Thief skills, which is 5% per + bonus, so +20%.

The Burglar's Bracers increase Open Locks by +10%.

The Book of Spells is the AD&D Book of Infinite Spells. It lets anyone who reads a page to cast the spell that's on that page. This book, however, has 100 Spell Points; and each spell cast diminishes those Spell Points by the level of the spell. You still don't know what the next spell is until you turn the page. Once the spell is cast, it vanishes from the book.

Ok, taking a stab at this several of the items could easily by considered beneficial to the entire group and should likely be a shared item.  I tag them with Ship, let me if agree or disagree or if we need to add more.

A moderate wind (11+ mph) disperses the fog in 4 rounds; a strong wind (21+ mph) disperses the fog in 1 round. Loot Divvy

Okay, the following distribution of loot has occurred:

Anneth Mage-Singer (the Dabbler)
1. Lantern
2. Cat Gloves
3. Burglar's Bracers
4. Book of Spells
5. Crystal Ball

Gierdon the Dwarf
1. Little Brown Jug of Endless Ale
2. Gauntlets of Ogre Power
3. Goblet of Fire-breathing
4. Stone Hand

Fando the Sage
1. Eggs
2. Sovereign Glue
3. Universal Solvent
4. Goggles of Night Vision
5. Helm of Reading

Talis the Elf
1. Cloak of Elvinkind
2. Headband of Intellect
3. Wand of Cold

Aaron
1. Dagger of Defending
2. Onyx Dog statuette

Anya the Fighter
1. Mask of Disguise
2. Jade Raven
3. Tunic of Fashion

Durek the Dwarf
1. Crystal Skull
2. Jar of Salve of Sliperiness
3. Thinking Cap

Kareth the Bard
1. Bag of Holding
2. Brass Horn
3. Brython Mandolin
4. Wand of Trap Detection

Rodrigo the Elf
1. Broom of Flying
2. Medallion
3. Ring of Spell-Storing

Rukao the Hobgoblin Mercenary
1. Chainmaille
2. Robe of Blending

UNCLAIMED ITEMS
1. Amulet
2. Leather Armor
3. Bowl of Scrying
4. Candle of Warding
5. Necklace of Elemental Beads
6. Mage Scroll

As Kareth is the closest thing to a 'rogue/thief' in the group, it made sense for him to have the Wand of Trap Detection.

Tom was still wearing the Banded Maille armor, so Elwood can negotiate with him for it. Or, Rukao will take the Leather Armor and Elwood can have the Chainmaille.

Elwood is also give the Rod of Healing as he's the closest thing the group has to a 'cleric/priest'.

The crystal ball is given to Anneth, as it might help her in her divinations.

Even though no one knows what the red crystal skull does (if anything), Durek thought it was cool and that's why he chose it.

If everyone was back in civilization, Talis might have taken the Tunic of Fashion. Instead, he went with the more practical choices.

If anyone has a problem with any of this, just speak up. Nothing's carved in stone yet (but don't tell that to Gierdon and his little brown jug).

And I'll happily carry the rod and use it liberally. I'll consider it group treasure, though.

Just noticed that Mort and Tom both had Banded Mail +1, of Invisibility on their list

Tom, you take the banded Mail  Mort will take another take from the unclaimed items

Mort will instead take the Armor: leather armor +3 of Stealth

Mort doesn't have a ranged attack except for throwing boulders and if no one else is claiming the Necklace of Elemental Beads, Mort will put it around his neck for now.

I suppose the two Dwarves would have counted up all the coins, and then appraised all the jewelry and plate-ware.

2,217 copper
3,745 silver
  800 electrum
1,733 gold
  112 platinum

Jewelry: 62 pieces worth about 20,000gp

Silver plate-ware: 39 pieces worth 4,400gp
Gold plate-ware: 52 pieces worth 7,900gp

What I decided to do with all my games, rather than waste time and energy figuring out XP for monsters, treasure, and role-playing, was to go with two major encounters equals a level progression, and two minor encounters equal one major encounter. This is a bit of an accelerated version of normal XP planning.

So everyone should gain a level now.

Okay, we've got a little opportunity here.

Do we want to keep the NPCs on board, get rid of at least some of them, or should I try to recruit players to take over a few of them, or possibly swap them out for new PCs?

Yes, you get a 1st level cleric spell.

Your spell acquisition for cleric would be levels 1, 3, 5, etc. (level divided by 2, rounded off), but they don't get a spell at 1st level.

Your spell acquisition for magic-user would be at levels 2, 5, 8, etc. (level divided by 3 rounded off).

Re: New Blood

@Mysterion If you want to keep it simple you can still do so. As an example, you had it at 2 Major encounters equals a level for everyone. Make that 2 Major Encounters equals a level for everyone but Mages & Demihumans. They require 3 major encounters to level. This might keep things simple enough.

You can hand out xp per encounter if you want to do the book keeping and require us to factor in gold/% bonus as the book says. That will require more work on our part but the pace of the game means it can happen without too much issue too. I've seen games were XP was recorded as a separate thread as PM's to each person though I don't think PM's would be required.

By gold share alone we all got about 2.6k in Xp not including  magic items.

Re: New Blood

Since it's now come up, it's time to deal with skills.

When I started this game, I was only using the BECMI version. I wasn't aware of the D&D Rules Cyclopedia. I now have a PDF of it.

So, skills are now on the table. In fact, I put up a thread listing them back in August, and then didn't do anything with them.

Everyone could have started with 4 skills, getting extra for a high Intelligence (12-15 = +1 skill, 16-17 = +2 skills, 18 = +3 skills). Or you can hold off on assigning your skill slots until you actually need them.

You can spend more than one slot on the same skill if you want, increase the skill level by 1 per extra slot spent.

You get another skill slot with levels.

Your skill level is equal to your ability score for that skill.

To succeed at a skill check, you roll EQUAL TO or UNDER that number.

Re: New Blood

Back again. Sorry for the absence. Had a bout of burnout... took me a week or so to get over it... and then, of course, I got busy for a few days. Took a lot longer to get caught up on my games than I thought it would.

Burnout, holiday blahs/blues, not feeling well, getting old, not sleeping well... some or all of those things may have come into play. Fortunately, nursing a hangover wasn't one of the causes, but could very well be one going forward here for the rest of the month.

If you aren't that familiar with RPoL, posting has a tendency to slow down this time of year due to getting busy at work or with family because of the holidays. Some players (usually students), however, wind up having more time to post. I don't fall into either category but should have lots of time to post, though I wind up getting unexpectedly busy on odd days.

So, I'll try to keep things moving along at perhaps a slower pace (but faster than 'normal').

Hope everyone is still hanging around.

Happy Holidays to everyone.

Some Things I Wanted To Share

Hey, two things I wanted to mention:

1) I have the feeling that my character comes along as a bit bitchy. I try to write Mista as a fierce and independent woman, if she is just being a pain in the ass let me know. Or if you have other comments/suggestions on her.

2) I feel like this game is a bit in a bit of a slow rythm. That is beginning to take a toll on the story in my perspective. How do you experience this?

Hope to hear from you!

In reply to Mista Faer (msg # 450):

1) It's a bit too soon to judge the character. So keep playing her how you feel.

2) This game goes in stages, it is a slow pace game for the most part mostly because everyone has a bunch of RL duties going on (or at least that is what I assume). It does have moments where it picks up and then slows back down.

At the moment I think we are slower more because of the big unknowns we are moving into atm.

In a similar vein, if I disappear for a bit, it's because my computer died. The screen's been going wonky on me... can't see anything for the flickering horizontal lines. Shutting it off to rest resets it, but I'm expecting it to go completely at any time.

I just wanted to introduce myself.  Alex will be entering the story soon.  It seems he was the result of an errant summoning spell.  Talk about a blind date going south, lol!!!

Anyway, I am getting back into D&D after a LONG hiatus (like from the 90's).  I can't wait to jump in an re-learn how fun this can be.

Had to switch back to the back-up computer and reload Windows so that the wifi issue got fixed. Was doing fine for a few days. Then, yesterday, all of a sudden, several of the keys stopped working... including the space bar! Made it very hard to post.

Also couldn't sign it to RPoL, so I'm back on my computer. Don't know if the wonky lines will come back or not, but probably have to not use it for too long a period at a time.

07:03, Today: Tom Wolf rolled 12 using 1d8+4.  Damage w/ Bastard Sword.

Here's how I got the above.

Just put in your mod in the first open space for a to hit roll and in reason for the roll what you are doing.

Change the d20 to dwhatever for damage and put in your modifier in that same open space.  and in reason for the roll what you are doing.

If you are using a melee weapon like a sword, your modifier for both to hit and damage is based on your Strength.  Ranged weapons like bows and thrown darts and daggers are based on your dexterity to hit only.

18 is +3

So if I have a strength of 13, my modifier is 1. So I have to roll a 1d20+1 to see if I hit, and than a 1d8+1 to see what damage I can bring?

One roll for attack (unless you are making more than one attack) and one roll for damage (if you hit). It's usually easier to type both rolls into the dice roller, and then just ignore the damage roll if you don't hit.

It means you know something about magic other than what is 'common knowledge'.

There's divine magic and arcane magic. But then there's elemental magic, and the Mysterious Seventh Magic, which is what you are all looking for to try and 'fix' the Radiance.

You can always explore other fields of endeavor. It's generally referred to as 'multi-classing'. Normally, you'd need to find a wizard to apprentice to who can teach you. However, with 2 points in Alternate Magics, you probably have a leg up on that already. You just need to find someone who can cast arcane spells to show you how it's done.

Sorry for the delay. I've been having computer problems. I ran out of memory. My computer, not me personally (though I'm working on it!). Apparently I've fallen victim to something called 'bloatware', which I hadn't even heard the term before. Piles and piles of apps that get dumped on my computer by other apps. Don't know when they got there, how they got there or why they got there, but it's eaten up my 213GB of hard drive memory. Which meant I couldn't open any files or a lot of apps. Contacted Microsoft support to 'resolve' the issue, but other than pointing out that I've got 138GB of 'Other', they couldn't/wouldn't tell me what all the crap was or what I could get rid of that wouldn't screw up my computer.

Finally went through a deleted a few apps that I did recognize, such as Skype, which I haven't used in about 10 years now and can't foresee using again any time soon. Also deleted Twitter which I don't use. Deleted XBox apps; again, never used and never will.

That freed up a whopping 2GB. It's at least enough to let me do things again... until it fills up with more bloatware.

I used to think it was own files that were eating up the memory, but then realized that the thousands of files in total barely filled 2GB. Of course, my music is 27GB....

Anyway, even after deleting 75% of my files (copied it all to an external hard drive left over from my last computer), it barely made a dent.

DIVERT YOUR COURSE

This is the actual radio conversation of a U.S. naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995. Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations, 10-10-95.

CANADIANS: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

AMERICANS: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision.

CANADIANS: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

AMERICANS: This the captain of the U.S. Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

CANADIANS: No, I say again, you divert YOUR course.

AMERICANS: This the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States Atlantic Fleet. We are accompanied by three Destroyers, three Cruisers, and numerous support vessels. I DEMAND that you change your course 15 degrees north. I say again, that’s one-five degrees north, or counter-measures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.

CANADIANS: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

In my 20+ years of PbP gaming on various sites, it was generally accepted that posting between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day diminished considerably due to Holidaze, work schedule changes, family, shopping, putting up decorations, etc. For that reason, expectations for timely posts was kind of put on hold.

In my case, this didn't usually apply to me, but this year, I seem to have hit a down cycle. It's probably a combination of age + health + meds + diet + environment + Holidaze. So, just bear with me while I sort it all out and hopefully get back on track in the new year.

AC finally got fixed. Only took 2 weeks and required a Master Tech to come out and fix the screw up the other 3 techs made.

Now I just need to find a Master Tech that can fix ME!

Re: The Seventh Magic

So apparently it was my turn to get Covid, although a weaker strain. Culminated Monday night when I fell getting out of bed because I got dizzy and my legs were so weak they couldn't support me. After friends helped me get into a chair, called an ambulance to take me to the hospital for evaluation and testing. Everything else was clear but the test came back positive for Covid. Put some fluids in me, gave me a few prescriptions for me cough, and sent me home.

According to the doctor, I have it for a few days, so Monday was the worst of it. Getting better, but I still feel like crap and a bit unsteady on my feet.

At least this explains why I've been feeling so crappy for awhile now.

Re: The Seventh Magic

As you may have heard, Southwest Florida where I  live got clobbered by Hurricane Ian. Once again, we've lost power. With Irma, we lost it for 10 days. It could be longer this time as a couple of substations got trashed and there's almost a million people without power now across the six counties.

Currently using my friend's hot spot from his phone, but there's still the problem of charging up my computer and his cell phone.

So, not sure how much I'll be able to post before we get power back. No gas stations are operable because their pumps are electrical and they don't have power either. Most stores were closed today, but a few restaurants managed to open to feed the people that can't cook at home now.

Lots of trees down, and some damage to houses and yards. Six houses on our block lost their back porches. Our fence barely survived, but it's leaning because the ground got so soaked. Lost a few solar panels. But other than that, made it through without any damage to the house (except the back porch (the lanai) is 50% gone) and we're all intact--people, cats and dogs.

Take care of yourself and your family.  A few days without an update because of Ian is a minor inconvenience for us to deal with.  Family comes first.
I won't be posting this weekend.  I picked up 4 extra hours of OT because of a co-worker being off this weekend.  That was even before Ian hit Florida and now it is probably going to cause mass chaos for me when it hits South Carolina.

Re: The Seventh Magic

Yea! Power's back as of Friday afternoon. Internet came back late Friday night. We thought it'd take long because we're at the tail end of a line and the telephone pole and transformer at the other end of the block were both lying on the ground because the pole had snapped in half!

Spent yesterday cleaning up, picking up the pieces, putting things back in place, and making sure nothing got burnt out. We'd unplugged the TVs and shut off the AC at the circuit box, so we seem to be okay.

Our two house cats keep wanting to go out on the back porch like they used to, but it's half gone, so that's not going to be an option for awhile.

Anyway, expect to get caught up on my games today.

Re: The Seventh Magic

As I probably mentioned, ever since I caught COVID back in October, I've felt like crap even after it went away. Supposedly, the aftermath leaves you tired for months. So I don't have enough energy to post very often most days, and when I do, I'm barely managing to do chores and run errands.

Last two weeks, I've been having minor chest pains on my right side (I'm not an alien--I only have one heart and it's on the left). While I thought it was just a muscle strain from lifting something, my previous heart problem and age had the VA nurse advise me to go to the ER.

So Thursday afternoon, that's what I did! After two days of poking and prodding and inspecting and injecting, they finally determined that I had absolutely no heart concerns. They sent me home Saturday morning with a $600 prescription! At least the first month is free, but unless the VA covers it, I won't be taking that next month.

And the stupid part is that I felt worse when I got discharged than I did when I went in!

Outside of the hospital, though, someone suggested my tiredness/lack of energy may be due to an iron deficiency, which might also account for my lack of appetite.

And then there's the insomnia... haven't slept in five days.

Anyway, I felt a little better today, so we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Re: The Seventh Magic

So here's what's been happening...

I've been 'ill' for about three months now, starting with getting COVID back in the beginning of October. Wasn't too bad and I got over it in a few days, but it left me with the typical aftermath symptom of being tired ALL THE TIME. I was slowly getting over it, and even had a few hours of energy every day.

I had a doctor's appointment scheduled for mid-October but then Hurricane Ian hit. The VA clinic took some damage and was closed for two weeks. I finally got the appointment rescheduled for Jan. 13.

December 1st, I had a minor chest pain on my right side. It felt like just a minor muscle strain but at my age and with my medical history, I felt it was prudent to check. Called the VA clinic to see about a walk-in visit the next day and the nurse I talked to went into panic mode with the 'chest pain' words, and told me to go to the ER. So, on Friday, December 2nd, that's what I did. More panic mode.

Spent 4 days being poked and prodded, inspected, detected, and injected and stuff, only to be told my heart was fine. More exactly, they couldn't find any cause for the chest pain... the obvious cause seemed to elude them.

Here's where it started going to hell. Getting out of the hospital, I had an extreme loss of appetite, shortness of breath, and NO ENERGY. Didn't have any of that when I went in!

Not only was I not hungry, but nothing tasted appealing any more. Could barely eat my favorite foods, and then only 2-3 bites. On top of that, I ran out of one of my diabetes medicines. Not eating and drinking much, I also wasn't taking my meds as regularly as I had been.

This went on for the next three weeks, so things probably grew gradually worse without me quite realizing it.

December 31st, I managed to pull a back muscle, and while the pain meds I took didn't do squat, I at least knew it'd go away in a few days. It did. And then I got hives!

Jan. 6 I went to the VA clinic to get bloodwork done for my doctor's appointment. No sooner did I get home than the doctor called to tell me my blood sugar level was 903! I needed to go to the ER pronto! That's where I've been for the past week. :-(

I still didn't feel all that bad (weak and no energy), but I definitely had some serious health issues. Turned out I had ketoacidosis and some kidney issues. After a few days treatment, the keto was gone, kidneys were all better, and my blood sugar was back to normal. Now I had to survive the 'recovery'. As long as I was stuck in that hospital bed, though, I knew I wasn't going to get better. So now I'm home.

Have a nurse helping me, and physical therapy should start tomorrow. And now I have to play tag with a doctor's appointment again...

Anyway, the reason I'm telling you all this is in case you, family or a friend should find yourself in a similar situation, you'll have a heads-up/warning about what's might be happening.

Now it's just recovery and rehab.

Re: The Seventh Magic

Still here. As it turns out, seven days in a hospital bed really did a number on me, no doubt helped along by my age. Still tired most of the time, energy/stamina comes and goes. There are times when I get out of the recliner and only manage to take three steps before I have to sit down again. Other times, I can get up and zip around the house with the walker with no problem. So it seems like it's going to take me twice as long to recover as I was hoping/expecting it to.

Hoping to get back to my games in another day or two.

Re: The Seventh Magic

So while I was stuck in the hospital bed for two weeks, I wrote and rewrote this post in my head several times. Don't remember any of it now, so here's the newest version.

THE NEVER-ENDING STORY...

The Missing Chapter: when I was discharged from the hospital back in January, I was sent home with a Foley catheter, which was more of an annoyance and handicap for my home rehab at the time. Managed to get an appointment with the VA  urologist two weeks later. He thought I should never have been sent home with it, but it was time to get it removed. Took a week of scheduling shuffles but finally went home without it on the following Thursday.

That Friday night when getting ready for bed, I lost my balance while setting something on the floor and fell over on my back onto the concrete floor. My housemate helped me get up and everything seemed fine once I was back out in the recliner. Nope. Come Saturday, I was in excruciating pain across all the muscles in my chest and back. Doan's, Aleve, Tylenol didn't help at all. Monday added a heating pad... better. Wednesday, switched to BenGay... better, but still couldn't sleep, so Thursday went back to the VA for some stronger pain meds.

That doctor saw the previous records and thought I might be having a pulmonary embolism and immediately did an ambulance transfer to the ER. 6 hours later the ER doctor decided that wasn't the case and sent me home with vicadin. Didn't do anything but pharmacy was closed so had to wait till the next day to get more.

After that, everything was fine for a few hours. Mid-afternoon, I suddenly couldn't move my legs!

EMT/PD shortly had me back in the ER. MRI of head and neck revealed a tumor in my C2 vertebra. Had spinal surgery next morning! Being the weekend, it took 4 days to get the pathology back which identified it as prostate cancer. Caught it early and getting chemo, and now in rehab to walk again.

Other than that, I'm in great health (for my age)! Probably 4-6 weeks in rehab before I go home.

Re: The Seventh Magic

Apologies for no update but really didn't think there was one.

Still paraplegic trying to recover mobility at a poor rehab facility with bad nursing and half-horrible food until...

Developed a sore on my butt from laying in bed 24/7 that didn't get treated properly and turned gangrene, so now I'm back in the hospital with surgery scheduled for Tuesday.

Recovery to go home was still about a month away. Don't yet know how this new problem will affect that.

Low energy levels at rehab have left me with a one-track mind--just have trouble shifting gears between game systems right now.

My OCD stubbornness is still keeping me from pulling the plug on my games. I really have fun running games and it really bums me out that I can't keep them going right now for all of you. For those of you who are still sticking around waiting for the game to restart, I sincerely apologize for the delay. For those of you who have moved on, no hard feelings here--I completely understand.

Anyway, Happy Easter to everyone!

Re: The Seventh Magic

Can't sleep, can't focus to post... turn. More of the same. Turn. Repeat.

STAGE MINUS ONE--SPINAL SURGERY: Hell, I don't even remember half of it. This would have been the spinal surgery to remove the tumor and put me on my back for two weeks. DONE. SUCCESS!

STAGE ZERO--REHAB ERROR: Weeks at rehab facility where inadequate and improper nursing care turned an ordinary bedsore into a far more serious gangrene wound... one that now needed surgery to fix. DONE? WAS THAT A SUCCESS OR FAILURE?

STAGE ONE--BACKSIDE SURGERY: Operation on my tailbone went off without a hitch apparently. Just left with a major wound on my tailbone. Couldn't/can't put pressure on the wound while it heals, thus laying on my side and having to get turned to the other side every two hours, necessitating having to learn to type on my laptop upside down and sideways with one finger. Remember, this is at the BETTER recovery/rehab facility rather than at home, so options are still limited. Did I mention the I-V dangling from my arm that also gets in the way? DONE. SUCCESS.

STAGE TWO--STAPLES/SUTURES REMOVAL: Staples and stitches still need to come out. Don't have a timeline for that yet but presumably soon.
___STAGE 2.1: First half of the staples were taken out Tuesday. On schedule, standard routine. DONE. SUCCESS.
___STAGE 2.2: Second half of staples were removed Friday. Again, right on schedule with no complications. DONE. SUCCESS.
___STAGE 2.3: Sutures are currently supposed to come out on Monday, though that probably depends on how the final healing has progressed, since not everyone will heal the same way. PENDING.

STAGE THREE--WOUND REHAB: sitting protocols start as soon as sutures come out (?). Start getting used to sitting up  again... in 15-minute intervals. No details yet on frequency or duration. Will kind of depend on how well I do, but further complicated by not  having any control of my leg muscles. Requires moving to a normal bed rather than this deluxe air bubbling mattress that's meant to stimulate skin/muscle do I don't get more bedsores.

STAGE FOUR--HOME REHAB: As soon as I can stand up on my own two legs, I should be able to go home for final rehab. Regain mobility. At this point, there's no telling how well the wound rehab and the paralysis rehab will work together. The therapist seemed to think they could make them work together in synergy, but I didn't get a whole lot of enthusiasm from him. I suppose it could be uncharted territory for him.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE: I now qualify for Frequent Surgery Miles. I've had four surgeries so the fifth one is free! Oddly, I started with the Big One (double bypass heart surgery 15 years ago) and that went easier than these.

Still not sure if there's a light at  the end of the tunnel yet--if there is, hope it's the Battery Low indicator and not the Westbound #9 train!

Re: The Seventh Magic

___STAGE 2.3: Sutures came out on Monday right on schedule, but the final healing is still in progress for several weeks/months. DONE. SUCCESS.

STAGE THREE--WOUND REHAB: sitting up for continued wound rehab protocols start as soon as sutures came out, about a week ago now. Start getting used to sitting up  again... in 15-minute intervals twice a day. Moved to a standard air mattress bed. Frequency and duration will kind of depend on how well I do, but further complicated by not having any control over my leg muscles and not enough feeling below the waist. Communication/responsibility issue has only produced one session--should have been six by now! PENDING???

___STAGE 3.5--RESUME PREVIOUS REHAB: In a week or two or three depending on how quickly I improve here, I get transferred to yet another Rehab facility for continued wound recovery... takes a long time... as well as mobility rehab.

___Stage 3.7--TRANSFER TO NEW REHAB: So the Wound Recovery has done well enough that I'm getting transferred to a different rehab facility for the Sitting/Mobility rehab. Don't know why there's a difference other than where I'm at is more medical than therapeutic so they need to make room for a new patient.

THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL: Different tunnel, different light. I suppose it's a step in the right direction, but we'll have to see how it goes.
