Because 1E Paladins have protection from evil as the spell for their defensive buff. That includes a +2 to saves. Ghouls are rather clearly evil.

So my 12 to save vs. poison becomes 10 vs. evil things, so I'm fine! And I probably hit now too :)

The saving throw is because of the smell, not the evil nature of the creature I'm afraid, so the bonus doesn't apply in this case. The bonus would apply if the creatures claws were poisoned though as that's a direct result of it's physical attack.

I could argue the smell is evil, and my stomach would certainly agree. But it's your call. ;)

I disagree. Protection from evil is a relatively small area effect. Most non-touch range spells are cast outside this area (if cast within they're likely to attract a sword or three during the casting time, and while the caster is unable to dodge or otherwise defend themselves).
My reading of Protection from evil is the bonus only applies to physical attacks which originate from within the area of effect. A breath weapon could be considered a physical attack, as would a claw, kick, thrown rock, etc. A spell, whether it be cast by a mage, wand, scroll, ring, etc is not, UNLESS it requires a touch.

You're the GM for this game. In most others I've played in, the bonus applies to any attack used by an evil creature, magical or otherwise. So from my point of view, you're houseruling the ability to be weaker then it usually is. Just saying. The protection from evil saving throw bonus is intended to protect the user from evil wizards and evil clerics, as well as evil fighters (the AC bonus)

There's room to follow around behind Kalador and block the path the other three creatures went. Or could reach through and pull Ronalt back out of the way, or help get Amathaon out of the tunnels.

Kalador is now under new management.

The party has returned to the moat house after an extended foray into the temple to clear out bandits while they were gone.
A dragon has taken up residence in the upper level and in return for your lives the party has agreed to do basically what they came for anyway - clear out the lower levels. The dragon expects to receive any treasure you find, and will probably kill you all later anyway.

Right now you're fighting a group of very smelly humanoid creatures tentatively identified as ghouls. Ronalt and Amathaon are paralysed, one of the creatures has been slain, and three more turned. One remains but is only moderately wounded.

Kalador is currently in a blocking position to cut off the last creature, or intercept the possible return of the other three.

Dragon? *wince*

I just saw the current combat map. I assume Kalador's current weapon is the flametongue?

That is correct. It would definitely be a good idea to read from the beginning of that thread too.

Other way round actually, although you do add the basic speed factor of the weapon before subtracting any pluses link to a message in this game.
Also given these are undead of some type, the variable plus of the flame tongue comes into play.
So still waiting on Luthien, and Corvus to confirm his inaction.

It's gas. It's unguided and certainly unintelligent. It isn't good or evil, it's just a REALLY BAD smell.
Really it's an effect of their "living" conditions and not really an attack.

It's gas caused by the undead. Hence, evil. Keep in mind I can disagree with you pretty much forever, and you're highly unlikely to convince me you're right. Every other GM I've played with would've said the source is what makes it evil. Stinking cloud spells are evil if an evil mage casts it. They're not if a good mage casts it. The effect is the same.

I just realized something... what's with the save vs stench? Ghouls don't have stench... Ghasts do.

Would a balloon filled with gas thrown by somebody evil be evil?
If the same balloon was thrown by a good person would it be good?
What if the balloon was filled by an evil person, but thrown by a good?
Or what about a trap?

I love it when something like this happens ...

The Monster Manual says, "These creatures are so like ghouls as to be completely indistinguishable from them, and they are usually found only with a pack of ghouls. When the pack attacks it will quickly become evident that ghasts are present, however, for they exude a carrion stench in a 10' radius which causes retching and nausea ..."

Perhaps it should say it will quickly become evident ... to anyone who has read the monster manual recently enough to still remember details like that.  ;o)

Luthien, it doesn't matter whether you agree with the DM on his rulings or not - you either live with it and move on (its his game) or you clear off. Stinking cloud spells are NOT evil, they're just clouds of gas whoever casts them and affect good and evil people (and neutrals, lets not forget them) the same way. A Protection from Evil spell would give you a bonus to your save against a Stinking cloud cast by an evil MU, only because they are evil, not because the cloud is.
