A6 S1: The Hole Thing
The sound of a person moaning drifts down the stairs almost covered by the thud and clack of fighting.

There is sound of several booted feet squishing followed by the sound like an impalement.
This is followed by the groan of a woman's voice.

Lord Seer is heard commanding "You guards, help them!"

Watching Huruyan disappear up the stairwell, Kumahl straps his staff to his pack. Turning momentarily towards a patch of crystal smoke, he grabs some up in a leather pouch and crushes it up when he can.

Grabbing the rope he begins working his way back up the stairs.

A6 S1: The Hole Thing
As Huruyan reached high enough up the stairs to see, a gruesome sight met his eyes.
In front of the now open doorway to the left of the cabinet with the man, a pallid, convoluted, eight foot tall leafy-looking creature stood.
Suddenly it swayed forward upon its mobile stalk to strike with woody appearing claws, from its convoluted folds, at Guardsman Turisan.
One of the claws was driven completely through Turisan's body.

Beside him, barely standing and bleeding profusely was Guardswoman Ninue.
As he watched, she threw herself and her spear into the thing before falling to the floor.

Against the wall on the other side of the landing an injured porter was crawling away leaving a trail in the mold on the floor.

Confronting the creature, Guardsman Lazhato was between Turisan and the crawling porter.

Also arrayed against it and between Huruyan and Ninue were the Guards Ssiyor and Pelmu

Huruyan saw Guardsman Lazhato drive his spear deep into the creature.
Guardsman Turisan followed by skewering some of its leaf like protrusions.

It did not look to be seriously damaged by their attacks.

Guardsman Ssiyor was startled by the sound of Huruyan coming up on his flank and had his spear batted aside by a claw.

Noting the slippery conditions with the muck covering the stairs, Kumahl holds a few steps below Huruyan trying not to push past him and cause further injuries to those on the landing ahead.

With the battle raging around him, Servant Darakdakin managed to crawl behind the line of guards.
He continued crawling to where the rest of the servants were gathered, near Lord Seer and Merchant Dresu.

Guardsman Turisan struggled to get his spear clear, he was unable to as he collapsed in a pool of blood beside Guardswoman Ninue.
Guardsman Lazhato was not able to land a solid blow while trying not to trip over the bodies of Turisan and Ninue.
With the bodies in the way, Guardsman Lazhato missed one of his dodges and was buckled by a claw through his chest.

Among the rest, the batting claws and the swaying trunk deflected their stabbing spears but kept the thing's attention enough for Guardswoman Pelmu to skewer it.

Coming at the creature from out of the stairwell, to attack on its flank, Huruyan was also able to land a solid blow on the pallid thing.

Though there were a lot of nicks and gouges, only Guardsman Turisan's spear still jammed through the creature seemed to really effect it.
It swayed a little slower than initially but, not enough to give the remaining attackers any advantage.

Huruyan cleared the stair landing and Kumahl hauled himself the rest of the distance to the landing.

"Where the hell did that come from?"

Looking briefly to Dresu and Lord Seer, "Should have separated you two earlier."

[Anyone Kumahl can reach from the stair landing, he will attempt to Cure Light Wounds, if injured.]

Getting to Lazhato by crawling, takes the opportunity to cast Cure Serious Wounds.

Suddenly a cloud of spores erupted from the creature filling the area surrounding it.

Guardsman Lazhato was blasted in the face by the cloud blinding him and starting him to coughing.
His stab at the creature was thrown off the spores in his face and Kumahl's hand on his leg.

Guardswoman Pelmu snapped her face away from the blast but missed landing a solid blow because of it.

As one of the creature's claw sunk into her, Guardsman Ssiyor gasped her last breath and her spear skidding along the pallid trunk as she sank to the floor.

Huruyan slammed his mace into the rubbery trunk making a mush where it hit.
The face full of spores started him coughing.

With a sliding dive Kumahl crawled to quickly reach Guardsman Lazhato.
Once there, he quickly chanted his Cure Serious Wounds stanza while touching Lazhato on the leg.

The porter that was carrying the beetle carapace lays near Kumahl on the floor beneath the spore cloud. Grabbing the carapace he uses both hands to wave spore free gusts into the cloud spore in order to dissipate it, at least near himself.

While holding her breath and trying to see clearly in the cloud of spores, Guardswoman Pelmu jabbed at the thing without penetrating its rubbery outer layer.

Beside Pelmu, Huruyan weaved in and out of the cloud but managed to land a solid blow on one of its stalks.
Huruyan timed his movements with luck as one of the creatures claws plunged the air where he had previously stood.
A burning sensation had began in his throat and lungs.

On the other side, the wind from Kumahl helped clear his sight and Guardsman Lazhato punctured the surface of the thing.

In apparent response to Kumahl blowing its spores back at it, the creature let loose another cloud.
This thickened the air around it further.

"Anyone that can, cover your mouths with a cloth or rag."

"Anyone have some lamp oil?"

Kumahl takes up his lit torch which he had dropped. Covering his mouth and nose he waves the torch into the cloud spore hoping to ignite and torch the spores.

The spores were to much for Huruyan, so he takes a step back to get some clear air. Taking a piece of cloth he covers his mouth to keep the spores out. Then seeing what Kumahl was doing he tried to assist by taking up a torch and waving it toward the spore cloud. As the air cleared somewhat Huruyan tried to shove the torch into the creature.

The two remaining guards swung at the spore cloud belching fungus with glancing blows.

The torches that Kumahl and Huruyan swung seared the spores that the flames touched but those
spores were soon replaced by more.

Huruyan's lungs joined his throat in pain as the inhaled spores germinated inside.
Beside him, Guardsman Lazhato was wheezing and coughing as he fought.

With the double torchlight Kumahl could occasionally glimpse what looked like a large open room behind the fungus.

"Someone opened one of those blasted doors. Everyone who can hear me. Head for the open door beyond the Spore Beast. Go."

Kumahl leads the way with his torch. Staying low and and keeping his nose and mouth covered he works his way to the open door. Stepping inside and out of the way of the others coming inside, he surveys the surroundings.

In response to its attackers rushing to its rear the creature expelled yet another cloud of spores and struck through it at Guardsman Lazhato.
It may be that the thick cloud of spores obstructed it as well because it missed.

The torch Kumahl carried illuminated a new large room except for a very large double hole just in front of him.
This large rounded hole was at the edge of what looked like a long table.
There are nine chairs arrayed around this stretched oval table.
One of the chairs was missing where it had fallen into the hole.

The floor here was also covered with the same white slime.

Beside Huruyan and Pelmu, just inside the door, there was a floor to ceiling china cabinet with a jumble of strange shaped objects inside.
In front of Huruyan was a chair, beside the table.

From the torchlight Huruyan saw that in each of the corners of the room, beyond the other end of the table, were mounds of fungal matter.

Kumahl could also see that beyond the Venn diagram shaped hole, that led straight down into the dark, was another room with more furniture visible.
This additional room was separated by a wall that was only open on his side.

Guardsman Lazhato struggled to breathe while Guardswoman Pelmu prepared to attack the creature from its flank as it turned to face them.

Huruyan was also unable to breathe as the spores germinated in his throat and lungs.

Far to the other side of the creature, Dresu and Lord Seer stayed back with the servants and the other torches.

Kumahl noticed his brother and another guard struggling to breathe as the spores germinated. An idea dawned as he was thinking about the spores spreading.

He opened his pack with his rations. His rations had those especially hard biscuits. Pulling out the biscuit from one ration he moved to the nearest person struggling for breath. Using the biscuit in several functions he scraped the spores out of the mouth and used his knife to cut that section from the biscuit as he tried to clean out the person's mouth.

"Something rough, dry, and abrasive to clean out the spores. Get to it. No water."

"Guardsman Lazhato is your mouth and nose covered in something dry? Don't strike unless your face is covered."
