"Wait... is it bringing people here... or taking them elsewhere?"  Aradhel asked, rather alarmed.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
The elf maid took great interest in the Druid's response.  Magic manifested in a myriad of ways, and it was interesting hearing how others experienced it.   She bowed her head at the compliment, "Much like you, I am still honing my expertise."

The sight of the bell, or rather the corpse therein, drained the glow from her expression.  "Such is the way of Ogres I suppose…" she half-murmured in response to Aradhel's observation.

'Bella's attention quickly focused on the lantern and she approached the table for a closer look.  Not touching it just yet, she wanted to be sure nothing was attached to it.  Having seen what passed for Ogrish humor, she looked to see how the bell was suspended before moving beneath it in any way.

She looked at Tanlis and then at Aradhel, "Did the Ogres bring it?  Or someone else?"  She leaned over Tanlis's staff without directly moving in closer.

(20:57, Today: Silvijabella rolled 3,4 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,4.  Smarts check. Curious and Impulsive… but not suicidal.  She fully expects the bell, lantern or table to trapped in some way.  I typed most of this up prior to Tanlis & Aradhel's responses posting...

Is the lantern lit, or dark?  Where is whatever light is in the room coming from?)It would make sense that a bell tower would be open to allow sound to carry for a distance.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick

Jereth was, at this point, rather content that the tower did not somehow contain a brigade of very crammed together ogres readying for a last stand.  The "dead ringer" got a sigh and a heavy shake of the head, "Sadism seems to be the stock in trade of these ogres..."  He joined in the general checking of the space (just to be sure an ogre had not managed to squirrel itself away under a broken table or something).  Tanlis' warning brought him up short and he eyed the one innocent lantern with new suspicion.  Aradhel and Bella's questions were, of course, the most important inquiries, but he did add, "And....  How....would it work?  Just by touching it?"

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella shot a sideways glance at Jereth "Possibly...", the sparkle in her eye belied her amusement at his quip.  "...should I try it and see?"  Her melodic voice was tinged with curiosity as she looked eagerly over at him and then at Tanlis before focusing back on the object in question.

"Although I would think, like most lanterns, it would need to be lit to work.  But what fuel and what source to light it?..."

She looked to see if there was blood on the lamp like the surrounding area.  Normally, she would take a deeper sniff to see if any clues to incense, scented oils, or rare herbs were present; however the hanging body and stench of death in the room made that a very unappealing prospect.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella bends down and observes the lantern. She and Tanlis determine fairly quickly that the lantern's teleportation magic works with a touch, not based on proximity, so approaching is safe.

As 'Bella gets within a few feet, the lantern blazes with light. It's clearly magical light--heatless magic designed to resemble flames. She is pretty confident that it is a two-way teleport, meaning that there is likely another trigger somewhere at the destination that would allow the teleported to return.

To the best of Tanlis and 'Bella's ability, they rule out traps or tricks. It is simply a teleport--an invitation, in a sense, to visit the destination on the other side. Though, given these ogres' sadistic tendencies, there is a good chance that whatever is on the other side is no more pleasant.

What do you do?

In reply to The Runelord (msg # 784):

"If this is how the Ogres got past the defenses-which I doubt, as they also attacked the gates-it could be a trap. They also might have set this device up just recently. I am not sure, but it's worth checking out. That being said-we could all use some rest before we go headlong into a ogre lair. At the very least I wish to have my full energies at the ready before combat." Tanlis says.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella looks over towards Tanlis and the others when the lantern lights itself, seemingly in response to her query.

"Serendipity?"  She shakes her head a moment, "Probably not...  Although this might've been here before the Ogres and they may not have used it..."

She paused to hear Tanlis's suggestion and shuddered as she nodded, "A rest would be good, but this is hardly a place for peaceful slumber.  We still have chambers below we haven't checked."  The stench of death and the Ogres still lingered in the room and the Gypsy just knew it would lead to nightmares or other unpleasantness.

(OOC - I'll edit if I'm remembering wrong, but wasn't there another sett of stairs leading down that we skipped earlier?)

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
The party consults with the members of the Black Arrows who have secured the rest of the building. They confirm that there are no more areas in the castle to be explored--and that they have never seen this lantern before. "Definitely came from the invaders," they growl.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella gave a relieved look when the Black Arrows verified they was no place else that needed exploring.  She glanced back at the lantern when the guardsmen confirmed it had arrived with the Ogres, "Then a good night's rest before we proceed with any further investigation seems the soundest option." nodding to Tanlis in support of his suggestion.

"Was there any building on the grounds that wasn't befouled by these spawn of Vaprak?" she asked of the Black Arrows, hoping there might be a place more conducive to restfulness.  Her previous cage had been more pleasant than the current surroundings.

(Don't know if Vaprak is appropriate as the god of Ogres & Trolls in this setting, so might need to substitute the proper name or moniker...)

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella looked a bit hurt at the suggestion, but Aradhel's solution had merit as well as her trademark straightforward approach.

She shrugged and nodded in consent, although the disappointment of not being able to verify where it went or how it worked showed on her face.  It was a magical artifact after all...

"That could work as well... possibly."

In reply to Aradhel (msg # 789):

"Because they did not use the thing to enter or escape. Most likely they are planning to bring more troops in. We need to stop the ogre threat, and we can go on offense and take the fight to them when the least expect it." Tanlis pointed out to the elf warrior.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick

Jereth's sword had been slid away into the scabbard as the wiser heads discussed.  The guardsman eyed the lantern warily, as though waiting for an ogre to leap out of it.  Which, from what he understood was an /actual/ possibility.  He absently nodded at Aradhel's suggestion of burning it, though he did wonder, "How do we know they didn't use it to enter?  Or some of them escape?  Or...  if this thing has anything to do with the ogres....  Based on what I've seen of their work, this lantern seems....  Not disgusting?"

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Silvijabella's face brightened once more at Jereth's description of the lantern, "Maybe someone used the Ogres as shock troops to get the lantern here so they would then have a point of entry in the middle of a secure fortification.  How better to invade a country or manipulate an internal insurrection than from a location capable of withstanding a seige; all the while maintaining a portal to home for restocking supplies?"

She looked over to Aradhel and then back at the lantern.  "If we destroy it, surely it would only be a temporary setback if the Ogres aren't the  only ones involved.  We don't know how often the lantern can be used, or even how many there may be.  If there is a set of them, perhaps capturing them all would be a better approach?  At least then if they were destroyed we would better understand the source of the threat and could improve vigilance to guard against it."

'Bella looked at the lantern, curious as to any signs of its creators.  As Jereth had expressed, it didn't give the impression of being of Ogre workmanship.

"Perhaps."  Aradhel acknowledged the points made, though it sounded like arrogant dismissal.  But that was Aradhel.  "But I would point out that it surely was used in some capacity here, or it wouldn't be here, destroying it may end the threat it poses, if we activate it, we could wind up anywhere with no practical means of return, and we don't know it would take us to the enemy.  As well, this was a serious battle, we lost one hardened warrior and any of us could have been slain easily.  Are we truly equipped to take on legions of ogres?"

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella nodded somberly in reverence to the memory of Koram who had fought alongside these companions and aided in her rescue.  "You're right, of course.." she sighed in resignation.  "We're hardly equipped to take on a large force, and whereas I'm reasonably certain that we can return via the lantern;  I don't know if such a return could be done immediately or if it requires certain conditions or delays between uses."

She looked apologetically towards Jereth, "And it would hardly be grateful of me to suggest actions which might further endanger those who were kind enough to rescue me."  The melodic inflection of her voice accentuated her gratitude and sincerity while trying to add a cheerful bolster to morale.

Looking back to Aradhel, "Do we attempt to relocate it to a suitable conflagration now, or wait until after we've all had a rest?   I for one would prefer to wait, as well as find more comforting quarters in which to sleep."

She scanned the room for votes of assent or dissent.

"Wait."  Aradhel had a thought.  "A strong container, or a tight space such as a well.  We put it in there.  Even if the Ogres try to come through it while we debate, they will be crushed.  We make it useless to them without irreversible damage."

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick

Jereth grinned at Bella's "apology" and general gratefulness.  For those who knew him, it was a not up to his usual standards for charming grins.  But it really had been a rough day.  He did note, "Don't worry.  Sooner or later, we usually put ourselves in the most dangerous places anyway."  Aradhel's suggestion of restricting the lantern got a firm nod and a pointed finger of approval, "I like that.  That's good.  Drop it in something too small for ogres.  Yes."

"That is not a bad idea, but we should secure it for now.  A strongbox perhaps should work.  Tie some rope loops around it."  Aradhel suggested.  "And a long pole with a deep notch in it, or a hook on the end.  A spear with a pronounced flange might suffice.  Not to move the lantern, but rather to lift the container above it."

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella grinned mischievously and directed Aradhel's attention to the large, presumably heavy, metal bell that was directly over the lantern and the table.  "You mean something solid, heavy, and restrictive to an Ogre's movement... kind of like the inside of that?"

She wasn't sure if the table would hold up under the bell if it was dropped over everything.

"Do you think we could lower it partway and drop it the last few inches?"

The Elf tilted her head to the side slightly considering the bell's construction, "Do you think it would be sturdy enough?  Or maybe something the Ogres or those who sent them might've found of value and the lantern was the way to transport it?"  She highly doubted the latter, but it never hurt to get other input.

'Bella shook her head briefly, "Moving the lantern might activate it, as might moving the table it rests on.  I was thinking we might be able to tilt the table so the lantern would slide without triggering it."  The Gypsy examined the table carefully without touching it to see if it appeared secured to the floor or tied to the lantern.

The fact that the table and chairs were here seemed to confirm they belonged in the tower prior to the arrival of the lantern or the Ogres.

"True... perhaps if we could put some slack in the line and just put a half dozen people around it, we could move the bell that way."
