Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella frowned and reconsidered her approach to the spell.  If a melodic composition wouldn't work, perhaps just simple cacophony would.  In a chaotic jig that created a focus of sound that seemed to bear no rhyme or reason, the dancer channelled her energies in a second attempt to stun the otherworldly abomination.

(20:19, Today: Silvijabella rolled 11,2 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+5)11,2. Attempting a distracting cacophony. Just Perform, no spell cast.  With Charisma bonus the total is 13. I'm looking at this as more of a Trick effect since a second Shaken probably wouldn't have the effect I was looking for.  (Penalty of 2 to Parry) )

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
The snake woman is mesmerized by 'Bella's jig. However, she sees the glittering sword coming at her and manages to snap out of her reverie in time to dodge it.

She raises her hands and snakes spring out of the ground all around the party! They grasp at the party's limbs, trying to restrain them....

Requires 3 Bennies, but she avoids the Wounds! Because she Soaks, she also loses the Shaken condition.

She casts an Entangle spell--all PCs have to make an Agility check. If you don't beat a 6, you have a 2 penalty to Pace and skills linked to Agility and Strength. If you don't roll better than a 2, you cannot move or use any skills linked to Agility or Strength.

Make your rolls! Nobody else take an action right now.

Snake-woman: Parry 10, Toughness 12 (5), Bennies 1, 3 PP used.

In reply to The Runelord (msg # 888):

Tanlis ignored the binding serpants and summoned the tree golem once more. It barely hits the agile snake sorercess. Tanlis tries to escape, not close enough to the enemy to do much himself.

ooc-20:46, Today: Tanlis Half-elven rolled 9 using 1d8+4, rerolling max with rolls of 5. Tree golem, wild attack, gang up mods. Is her parry 2 less due to successful trick? Because if it is I would hit.

11:39, Today: Tanlis Half-elven rolled 11,3 using 1d12+5,1d8, rerolling max with rolls of 6,3.  Damage for tree golem attack. Total=14.

20:43, Today: Tanlis Half-elven rolled 1,5 using 1d6,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,5. Agility save to escape snakes? Do I do this as an action? If so, I just cast.

20:42, Today: Tanlis Half-elven rolled 4,4 using 1d10,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,4. Summon tree golem.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Aradhel cursed her foe, wishing she had struck her dead with the edges of her blades when she'd had the chance.  Though Aradhel was no assassin, she wasn't above pushing an advantage against an opponent with such obviously unnatural powers.

She was not happy about the situation, still it wasn't entirely bad, they had her pinned in, just not effectively.  Aradhel's secret wasn't her strength or conditioning or perseverance in the fight, it was her speed and agility.

So check this out.  Right Hand attack against our best friend

+2 Wild Attack, +2 Gang Up, +1 for the sword

19:52, Today: Aradhel rolled 11,9 using d12+5,d6+5, rerolling max with rolls of 6,4.  Right Hand.

Well it's a hit

13 damage - 19:54, Today: Aradhel rolled 9,4 using d8+3,d8, rerolling max with rolls of 6,4.  Damage - Right.

But wait, there's more! "Two-Hands" Aradhel strikes again, but not like you'd think.

Jereth by contrast had a lot more staying power.  Yes he was slower and more laden, but that meant he would in a pitched battle keep going longer than she would.  Aradhel's strategy had to be overwhelm with aggression and win quickly, if that failed, so did she.  And that wasn't working here.

She thrust one blade into her enemy, but it was really just to preserve enough space to step, spin and slice at those cursed snakes!

So with her Left Hand, Aradhel attacks the snakes restraining Jereth to try to cut him free him of that nonsense

I'm just going to roll and let our Gamemaster adjudicate how well this works.

I'm counting +2 for Wild Attack, and +1 for Gang Up as I assume Jereth would do everything in his power to help Aradhel strike the snakes holding onto him.

20:00, Today: Aradhel rolled 10,8 using d12+3,d6+3, rerolling max with rolls of 7,5.  Left Hand.

I'm betting that's plenty to hit it

7 damage - 20:01, Today: Aradhel rolled 6,1 using d8+2,d8, rerolling max with rolls of 4,1.  Damage.

Not great damage, but since it's attacking the snakes it might be enough, and perhaps a Raise is allowed

possibly 10 damage - 20:02, Today: Aradhel rolled 3 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3.  ignore that last roll that's a boo boo.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
The woman hisses and shrieks as Tanlis' tree-golem reappears and attacks her vigorously. She is forced to step right back into Aradhel's assault; it takes all her energy to avoid Aradhel's blade. She shrieks in a fell sibilant language unknown to the party.

Meanwhile, Aradhel's blows strike the supernatural snakes, killing some. Others spring up where these died to continue grabbing at Jereth; he is just a little too slow this time.

She is Shaken by the tree golem's hit and has to spend her last Benny to Soak the Wound from Aradhel.

Only Tanlis beats snake-woman in initiative in this new round, but he does it with style: he gets a Black Joker! Tanlis, all your rolls are at +2 this round, which does include your golem's rolls (hit and damage). Take your actions. Note that the snake-woman's Parry is back up to 10 now.

Tanlis gestures, and a small burst of flames appears in the snake woman's eyes, attempting to dazzle her. That is swiftly followed up by a massive tree golem strike...

ooc:

Tanlis uses elemental manipulation for a trick effect, getting a raise. If he succeeds, the tree golem will hit with a raise.

Total damage with raise=17, 12 without it.

10:36, Today: Tanlis Half-elven rolled 10,5,2 using 1d12+5,1d6,1d8, rerolling max with rolls of 5,5,2. Tree golem damage with possible raise.
10:35, Today: Tanlis Half-elven rolled 13 using 1d8+6, rerolling max with rolls of 7. Tree golem with wild attack, gang up, black joker.
10:32, Today: Tanlis Half-elven rolled 10,6 using 1d10+2,1d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 8,4. Elemental manipulation used as a trick.

The snake-woman is caught off-guard by this trickery; she shrieks and lunges back, right into a blow from the tree golem! She shrieks in pain...

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick

Jereth strained at the snakes wrapping around him.  Aradhel's sword cut away some and there was a moment of hope....only to have more of the things appear and wrap tightly around him.  Nonetheless, he persisted.  He strained against the serpents tugging free for another moment as the rest of the party launched their assaults.  The guardsman's sword rose again and he brought it down on the snakewoman in a heavy, cumbersome strike...

To Hit - 18(Forgot +1 from Sword in roll), Damage 14

1:17, Today: Jereth rolled 9,5 using 2d8+3,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,1,5. Longsword Damage with Raise.
01:15, Today: Jereth rolled 9,17 using d10+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 7,(6+6+3)15. Wild Longsword (+2 Gangup, +2 Wild, -2 Entangle).

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
The snakes wrapping about her ankles and legs were effective in preventing her from getting closer to the creature or move further from the encounter.  The fact that the things were slithering up to restrain her torso and arms didn't improve her outlook.  In an act of desperation more than planned aggression, she hurled the segment of her star that was clasped in her right hand and hoped to make some sort of an impact.

(19:57, Today: Silvijabella rolled 4,4 using d6-1,d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 5,5. Thrown Star (small), -2 entangle, +1 for Throwing with Star.  Presuming I'm within 4" (24'), that should be a hit.
20:00, Today: Silvijabella rolled 5 using d6+d4, rerolling max with rolls of 4,1. Damage for small star if hit.  Nope - that's a Derp.)

'Bella watched as the others pressed the advantage against the serpent-woman and renewed her efforts to free herself from the grasping reptilian tendrils that ensnared her.  Inspired by Aradhel's approach against the serpents that held Jereth, she struck out with her remaining star in an attempt to sever those hindering her.  Unfortunately, the bindings were more difficult to strike effectively with her hampered mobility.

(19:26, Today: Silvijabella rolled -1,0 using 1d4-2,1d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 1,2. Striking against the serpents in an attemt to cut/break free. -2 for partially restrained.  Nope, not cutting myself free that way.  Yay! Die Roller!)

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Decades ago...:
The young apprentice stood in the clearing.  The master at arms continued relentlessly.

"There are many creatures which may threaten you or your charges, eldritch horrors and grotesque monsters unknown.  In this final phase of your training, we are going to cover special purpose techniques.  We do not teach these to beginners, these are not orthodox, nor are they good forms that will normally serve you will in battle.  To master these skills is a paradox, you must learn them, and then unlearn them, and yet learn them so well they come back in a moment of need."

Much time, by human standards, had passed between that day and now.  Since then, Aradhel had been exiled and sent to wander the human lands, and had wandered far only to wind up here.

The Wolf Rends the Throat was an aggressive form, one on the very edge of orthodoxy.  It involved the Bladesinger taking both weapons in the reverse grip and slashing backwards.  The stroke was powerful, but normally not useful, because of the short range and high probability of the points of the swords extending towards allies as the maneuver concluded.  It was normally only used when the limb of a large creature like a giant needed to be severed and there wasn't room to execute a proper cut, or if you caught an opponent unaware and needed a decisive and quick victory, but it was in any event a desperation tactic.  And it was used here in such desperation because Aradhel realized how difficult it was to phase this creature with even clean thrusts to the vitals.

But she realized it wasn't going to be enough.  The lessons of the past came back.  Like the apprentice she had once been, Aradhel needed more.  The only problem was, the technique she intended to use to enhance her attack predicated upon the Elven homeland and its forests, and there were no trees in here.

Or were there?  The words of the master at arms came back to her from another occasion.

Decades ago:
"Exploit not only your enemies' weakness, but your allies' strengths."

Aradhel could never hope to compete with Jereth's resilience and endurance, nor Tanlis' magic construct and its impervious and stalwart nature.  But when it came to speed and grace, she could dance circles around either of them.  It was time to leverage that all.

After all, wasn't Jereth even sturdier when he was restrained by magic?

She had perhaps two running steps to gain momentum.  Aradhel had to snap her body viciously and move fast.  She barely leapt high enough to plant her heels upon the top edge of Jereth's shield, taking advantage of the fact he was anchored in place by the snakes to push off against what was effectively a column much like a tree.

But that was just the means to an end.  She soared and planted one of her swords squarely in the monster woman's shoulder.  Against a lesser opponent it would have ended the fight, though not fatally provided a skilled healer was about.  This she used instead as a pivot, having barely enough momentum to get her boot upside the golem's head.

This time she pushed off much harder, her other hand extending her sword.  With all her weight and momentum behind her, she thrust the point into the snake woman's neck.  It did not fully penetrate.  But it did not have to.

With a wild, wide swing, Aradhel spun about the monster.  It wasn't a full rotation, but it was a good two thirds, more than enough for the edge of her blade to cut through the monster's neck flesh, sending the snake woman's head, wearing a surprised expression, tumbling down the creature's breast then rolling along her serpentine body until it hit the ground.

Of course there was a price to be paid for such a stunt, besides kicking two of her allies in the face (though Jereth was protected by the snakes and the golem likely didn't care regardless).  She had been pushing against her opponent's force, which now vanished.

The elf Bladesinger fell to the ground with an undignified cry, white knuckled grips on her swords in that awkward reverse angle, and hit the floor with a wet thud as the large decapitated body of the snake-woman then fell on top of her, burying her.

A split second of acrobatic and combat mastery had bought her this undignified disposition.
