Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
As Sandpoint recovers from the attack and buries its (thankfully few) dead, the citizens do their best to get on with their lives. The cathedral is consecrated the next day during a much more subdued and indoor ceremony, but by the end of the week, the goblin attack is remembered mostly with chuckles. Now that the terror of the raid is over, memories of goblins accidentally lighting themselves on fire, getting stepped on by horses, or drowning in rain barrels that were only half full in the first place render memories of the raid in an almost comical light. But one thing the locals haven’t forgotten is their new heroes.

Do any of you try to hide the fact that you were involved in the fight?

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Cyrus spent the days tending to the community, providing help and healing where needed. He certainly was not hiding the fact that he was involved with the fighting and though he was not above milking it for what he could get, he never let people forget that people--good people--died at the hands of these "comical" foes. The real question, in his mind, was what was a human--assuming their leader was human--really after in the graveyard and how did they rally the goblins?

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
After he hugs his wife and kids, and assures them he's alright, he will go and investigate the graveyard, see if anything was disturbed, read the gravemarkers looking for interesting names, etc.  He'll also ask around town, ask if anyone unusual or interesting was buried there, if there are stories, etc.

Later, Kelar tries to downplay his involvement, but to many people saw him fighing and/or covered in blood that day for it to remain a secret.  So he simply says, yes, he helped, as any good citizen would do.  EDIT"I'd fought a goblin or two in my day, but that day was long ago.  Should've remembered I've got kids learning to fight."

Fishers heading out at dawn would find an unusual sight, Kelar running up and down the beaches, and stopping periodically to do push-ups, or lift heavy rocks.  He also starts working out more with his staff, and practicing hand to hand combat. /EDIT

09:04, Today: Kelar Bauerson rolled 2,5 using d4,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,5. streetwise.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
As life calmed down Jereth took up his post as guardsman with a smile and a laugh.  He was too young and full of fire to deny or downplay his part in the fight, although he made sure that he always gave great credit to Hywel, Kelar, and Cyrus for their actions.  When he ran into his friends during that week Jereth would buy them a round and tell the story about how they had all managed to defeat the goblin on dogback together through teamwork and solid tactics.

Aside from that he tried to treat it like any other week.  He went to work patrolling the streets and offering aid to those who needed it.  A good word for a flagging spirit, a strong arm for an elder who needed help with clearing away goblin parts from his roof, and some tips on how to defend yourself for the children as well as their parents; these were the ways he spent much of his time.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!

Hywel allowed himself to enjoy a little of the hero treatment.  Back home the Silverscrolls were rarely lauded for their efforts in support of the warriors.  He too would be quick to buy or share a round with his friends.  When the stories are told, he does exaggerate the parts regarding spellwork for dramatic effect.  As for the nobleman try to give him credit for the last blow, the dwarf pays it no mind.  They all fought and did so quite well together.  Nice to be a part of something.

He was really beginning to think of Sandpoint as a home, however temporary, and it was a point of pride for him to help with the town repair.  Cleaning, mending, what have you.  Not the greatest dwarven craftsman, but handy with a tool for rough sturdy repairwork.

If Kelar mentions a desire to check over the graveyard, Hywel would join him.  He wondered, as the rest did, what this "longshanks" was looking for.  Something important enough to loose a pack of goblin curs into a town of good folk as a murderous distraction.  That's a something worth wondering about.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
These four fellows soon find that their names have become household knowledge. Locals welcome them everywhere. A simple walk down Main Street for Cyrus, for example, results in local baker Alma Avertin charging out into the street and press a fresh-baked loaf of bread into his arms with comments that he must be starving and needs the bread.

A visit to the Hagfish by Jereth brings an immediate round of cheers, applause, and a round of drinks on the house, as well as a challenge to drink from the tank of Norah, the actual hagfish. There is prize money for anyone who can drink down a single tankard of “water” scooped from Norah’s tank. It’s a single silver coin to try, but the trick is that, since she’s a hagfish, the water in Norah’s tank is thick and horrifically slimy and foul-tasting. Few can stomach the stuff, but those who do get to keep however many coins have accumulated in the pouch, and then get to carve their names in the ceiling beam above the bar. To date, there are only 28 names carved there, and the Hagfish has been in business for nearly 10 years.

A trip to the Sandpoint Theater by Kelar led to a personal visit from Cyrdak Drokkus, the theatre-master, who tries to talk the shopkeeper into auditioning for his new play.

A stop at Savah’s Armory by Hywel is greeted with an instantaneous offer of 20% off anything in stock and broad smiles.

After not quite a week, each of the PCs gets a hand-written invitation to join Aldern Foxglove, the young nobleman whom they saved, at the Rusty Dragon in a couple days to receive a reward and to join him in a boar hunt in the nearby Tickwood.

Do any of you refuse the invitation? It is not required that you join, but it is rare for any of you to get an invitation to join a nobleman in any activity in Sandpoint.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Kelar gathers all three of his able-bodied friends to join him as he visits the Sandpoint Boneyard the day after the raid.

Set in the shadow of the Sandpoint Cathedral and accessible via a gate to the north or from several doors leading into the cathedral itself, this expansive cemetery overlooks the Turandarok River. Stone vaults owned by affluent members of the town stand near the cemetery’s edges or at its center, while dozens of humble plots, each marked with a simple gravestone, sit amid trees and shrub- beries. The boneyard is well-maintained, kept by a man named Naffer Vosk, a deformed smuggler Father Tobyn  took pity on after his ship wrecked just north of town a decade ago. Naffer has found redemption in the goddess Sarenrae, and despite a twisted spine that, from birth, has given him a sinister lurching gait, he’s one of the town’s most devout citizens. He keeps the boneyard meticulously clean and is also responsible for ringing the church bells every day at dawn, noon, and dusk.

The group finds him staring glumly out over the graveyard as they approach. He hails Jereth, whom he knows from his guard duty. "Greetings."

"Well met Naffer."  Jereth says with a smile, although he keeps his voice down out of respect for the dead.  Clasping the man's hand in his own the youth nods his head towards the grounds behind them.  "I'm sorry to bother you.  But, my friend Kelar has a thought which also troubles me.  We could use your help."  Here he steps aside and nods to Kelar to explain his thoughts.

Hywel, not really knowing the gravetender personally, contents himself with having a look about the area.  As good as he is able from where they are anyway; rude to just go wandering off into the boneyard without the keeper's by-your-leave.

Cyrus let the others look around while he approached the caretaker and took him aside, hand on his shoulder. "I'm not built for so much walking," he said, overemphasizing his limp. "I don't know how you do it." Once they were out of earshot from the others, he said, "I know Kelar can be a bit... intense... direct. But I sense there's something you didn't mention. It was a really chaotic day between the ceremony and the attack, no one would blame you if you did see something and forgot to report it or were off doing something else and truly didn't see anything. But any information is better than none. If you know something, you can just tell me and I'll find a way to reveal it without letting the others know it came from you."

Hywel really did intend to have a good look around for anything suspicious.  But, the gravestones and tomb carvings prove too distracting  his attention is quickly split by the searching and cataloguing the cultual lettering variations by age.  Fascinating stuff.  Really.

Seeing Cyrus talking to the groundskeeper, Kelar hopes Cyrus has more luck than he did.  He motions to Hywel, and calls Jereth over.

"It looks like someone tried to dig up or bury something at Father Tobyn's grave." he says.  Father Tobyn is the former rector of the church

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
As his friends started their search and spoke with the gravekeeper Jereth smiled.  He knew that they would be able to figure out whatever it was the Kelar had been wondering about.  Instead Jereth concentrated on standing by the entrance and watching the streets around the cemetery.  He wasn't sure why, but a part of him didn't want the people of Sandpoint to disturb their search.  Better to let them figure it out, and then decide what to do with it, then have a gathering form with everyone spouting off theories and generally getting in the way.

OOC:  Jereth rolled a critical fumble on a Notice check.  Not sure if one was even needed, but feel free to mess with him because of that.  :)

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
At Hywel's words, the gravekeeper waves the four close to him.

"Cyrus has sworn for you that you would not tell, so that binds you. Mark my words, don't go telling people about this, not
even the sherriff yet.

"During that thrice-damned goblin raid, someone came into the graveyard and stole..." He fights back tears. "Stole the body of Father Hywel. I found out an hour after the raid was over, and spend the whole night searching the woods. The cursed thief was good at covering his tracks--I think he must have flown, because he left no tracks anywhere around here. I don't know why anyone'd steal the good Father's body. He was like an uncle to me.

"I told Father Zantus, and he asked to keep this quiet. If you want to help him figure this out, go see him."

The group subsequently searches and confirms what Naffer told them: there are signs that there were goblins here who set up a ladder to let in someone bigger, probalby a human. It's a reasonable guess for the group that this person was the goblins' "longshanks" leader. Inside, it's clear the human-sized humanoid dug up the body and then either flew away, teleported away or something along those lines, for his trail ends cold there.

What do you do?

Hywel listened to the tale and looked over the ground.  He stroked his beard thoughtfully as he pondered, "A ladder to get in....  But skill enough to escape by more magical means....   That is a curiousity, right enough...."   The wizard gives a glance to the sky and the horizon.  He doubted the enemy would still be lingering so long after his foul deed, but he checked anyway.

Hywel falls in with the rest, still pondering the scene.  The suggestion of digging up the grave does rouse him from his thoughts though, "I do agree that we may have to...  But I do hate to disturb the graveyard still more.  Perhaps te rector will know more and it may be unneccessary..."  The wizard does so hope.  It may seem a small thing in the ace of the recent devastation, but the sacred should be...well...sacred.  Upon reaching the cathedral, Hywel would have his spirits lightened at the sight of the familiar stonework.  To the rector, he offers a now of the head in return for the greeting, "Hail to you as well, sir.   We...have a few questions that perhaps you can help with?"  The dwarf then glances to the others to continue.

At this, Father Zantus' face becomes quite serious. He nods and leads the group into the hallways of the cathedral to a private meeting room.

He turns to the group. "Firstly, thank you for your discretion. It is much appreciated.

"Your suspicions are correct. Father Tobyn's grave was disturbed, and his body taken. Naffer told me and several of my more trustrworthy clerics and I verified. It appears that someone in league with the goblins put a ladder to the graveyard wall during the goblin raid, went in, dug up my predecessor's body and then promptly left, either through flight or teleportation.

"I am currently attempting to scry or divine my way to more details, but whoever did this has magical means of concealing themselves as well. Something is afoot gentlemen, but I do not have many more details right now.

"I also have told all this to Sheriff Hemlock, who is conducting his own investigation. Between us, I expect us to turn something up.

"I think I know your minds. You would aid us in investigating, I think. While your hearts are in the right place, I would strongly urge you not to do so. There are already too many feet stamping about, and I fear we are only aiding the perpetrators in this matter if we flood the ground looking for them.

"However, considering your interest, I will keep you appraised on what we find and if you can be of aid, I will not hesitate to ask."

He seems entirely sincere in this. It clearly pains him that he feels that there is nothing more the party can do at this time.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
The friends wrap up with cleric and get back to their lives. Having accepted the young nobleman Aldern's offer of joining him on a boar hunt, the friends gather several days later. Young Aldern is ecstatic and begins by purchasing each man his own steed from the Goblin Squash Stables. The sign above this door perpetuates one of the greatest fears of the lowly goblin—being trampled underfoot by a horse. Tended by a retired hunter named Daviren Hosk, Daviren’s hatred of goblins is nearly legendary in Sandpoint. In a somewhat grisly display, over the entrance to the stable’s covered barn is his collection of goblin ears: preserved and nailed to three different rafters, each bearing the goblin’s name burned into the leathery flesh—mostly because Daviren knows that writing down a goblin’s name is one of the worst things you can do to desecrate his memory. The bitter ranger’s pride and joy is a large glass bottle filled with brine in which he’s preserved the body of Chief Whartus of the now extinct (due in large part to Daviren) Bonegrinder Tribe.

Daviren seems amused by the young nobleman's antics even as he gladly takes the fellow's money. He winks at Jereth, saying, "Not every day you get one of my horses for free, guardsman. Enjoy."

Aldern then eagerly leads the friends and his three manservants west over Tanner’s Bridge and along the southern banks of the Turandarok River. It’s a two mile ride to the Tickwood Ford, just north of the upthrust limestone escarpment known as the Devil’s Platter. Despite its ominous name, Tickwood is actually a relatively safe woodland, one well known to be the home of wild boars, deer, and perhaps one or two firepelt cougars—no goblin tribes dwell within its boundaries.

Aldern smiles broadly at the friends. "So, friends, tell me of yourselves! What deeds of valor have you seen in your day?"

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!

Hywel, like most dwarves, was not much of a rider.  He accepted out of politeness, but by the time the group was approaching the Tickwood, he regretted the decision entirely.  He was sore in ways he had never really thought possible.  It was embarrassing how the veteran ranger kept having to shorten the stirrups "to the same length his nephew used."  All in all, painful.  So, it might come as little surprise that the usually cordial wizard is a bit snappish and not up to much of a chat, "None that you'd care to hear of.  Are we there yet?"

"I'm afraid I've not seen much valor," Cyrus admitted. "Just the ordinary kindnesses and camaraderie one sees in a community such as ours. I find such things are often underrated compared to the bold action and brave acts of heroism that one sees in battle." Though he was not a trained rider, Cyrus welcomed the opportunity not to have to walk. He doubted he would be much use in actually bagging a boar--he would let Jereth have those honors--but he would help if he could.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Kelar rode well, although it was clear it had been a while since he'd been on a horse.  When the talk drifted to valor, he grimaces.  He'd met the sort before, that thought adventuring was all derring-do, heroic rescues, and willing bar wenches.  Although he mused to himself with an internal grin, I've seen all of that and more in my day.

But having seen such lords before, he knew how to talk to them.  "There are many kinds of valor my lord.  I saw townspeople and fishers fighting goblin warriors, with little skill but much bravery.  Men and women that work all day for their children.  Noblemen who take care of their people in times of need." he says with a sidelong glance.  "But I suspect you ask of the more ... traditional meaning.  Let me tell you the tale of Balak the Bold, and how he got that epitaph."

Kelar spins a tale of a small mountain village beset by an uprising of undead.  Balak and his companions had to guard the village while others went after the evil necromancer in his lair.  But the undead horde was much bigger than they had planned for.  Aristopolus collapsed after the strain of his magic grew to much, Sinsarian fired every arrow he had and fought side by side with Balak in a mountain pass, until he to went down, paralyzed by ghoul venom.  The position was untenable.  Balak could, fall back to a narrower point, one he could hold alone.  Indeed, he should have.  But that would mean leaving Sinsarian and Aristopolus where they lay.  So he stood his ground, an axe in each hand, and the zombies, skeletons, and ghouls piled up around him.  They piled so high he advanced into the horde, advanced close enough to the necromancer apprentices that they fled rather than face him.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Jereth is still a little queasy from his introduction to Norah's tank the night before.  He manages a grin and nod in response to Daviren's comment about the horses, but it isn't until they have put some miles and fresh air behind them that he feels up to any real banter.  When Aldern asks the group about stories of valor Jereth politely waits for his companions to go first.  After all, they were all more experienced than him and he figured that their stories would be much better.

Hywel's blunt refusal surprises Jereth, but a quick trip down memory lane reminds him of the events he had been barely paying attention to that morning.  He also can't disagree with Cyrus and Kelar's assessment that it was the little things which made the real difference.  Still, he couldn't help but wonder if tales of other people's valor would be good enough.  After all, their host had made a clear request.  Jereth tried to think of something.

"Well, there isn't much to tell about me.  Not yet anyway.  The bravest thing I ever was a part of was when a group of us chased Chopper back to his isle.  We had to watch out for traps and shadowy figures behind each tree and rock."  He shook his head, slowly warming to the story, "He was barricaded in his little hut.  Three of us took out the door while others watched the windows with crossbows.  We searched the place carefully, then went down into the basement.  I'll never forget that sight as long as I live."

Time for a Chase! Let's make this a five-round chase.

Everyone start round 1 by rolling a Ride check--if you aren't trained, roll 1d4-2 and 1d6-2.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Everyone in the party gains ground on the boar, which seems rather laid-back for a boar running for its life.

Perhaps the reason is found out a moment later--Jereth aims his bow a bit shakily but fires a shot at the back of its head. The shot sticks in the boar's hide--but seems not to hurt it!

Each of you can roll a ranged attack or melee attack on the boar. If you want to engage it in melee, you roll at -2 and have to make a Ride check to stay in the saddle. If you don't have a ranged weapon normally, assume that you have a crossbow or a short bow, your choice, from the young nobleman. If you aren't trained in Shooting or Throwing, just roll at 1d4-2/1d6-2. It's a hunt, it's all for fun. You can cast spells, too.

I rolled for Jereth--he hit with a raise (!) for 13 damage, but the Wild Card boar soaked the damage. One more benny for the boar :-)

Your moves!

Kelar, I did not ask you to take a -2 penalty. Roll damage, please.  (Yes, I know that's the normal rule, but it's just going to drag this out unnecessarily, so I'm disregarding it at the moment.)

Cyrus, if you want, you can use that Ride check to try to give the hunting party an advantage.  If so, make another Ride check at a +2 bonus, and I'll add +2 to everyone else's checks for round 2.

Also, Kelar and Cyrus draw cards, and Kelar, please draw a card for Jereth as well. I'm going to ask you to NPC him for the rest of this ride unless he comes back:

With a quick shot, Aldern sends an arrow through the brain of the beast and sends it falling to the ground. The rest of the party slides to a halt.

"Well done heroes, well done! Most impressive! I thank you for joining me."

He continues to chat in engaged fashion with the rest of the party for the ride back and seems quite sad when the party departs. Several in the party feel sure he'll be calling again.

Later in the day, though, Kelar and the rest of the group are just returning when the group is approached by a friend of Kelar's, Amelah Barrett. Clutching her baby girl Verah to her chest, she moves up to Kelar, sobbing. Clinging to the back of her skirt is Aeren, her 4-year-old son.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Alergast and Amele Barett are a typical Sandpoint family, with two children (little Aeren and baby Verah) and a loyal family dog named Petal. They were present at the Swallowtail Festival, where Aeren saw a goblin light a cat on fire and then caper around the burning remains—the poor boy really hasn’t been the same since. Every night, his howls of terror send Petal into a barking fit, and when his parents investigate, Aeren claims a goblin came out of his closet. Alergast checked the closet dutifully but found nothing, and ever since the kid’s complaints about the “closet goblin” have grown more and more tiresome to his parents. Yesterday, Alergast threatened to make Aeren sleep in the woodshed if he couldn’t learn to “be a man” and sleep through an entire night without crying and telling stories. Last night, Alergast didn’t go to soothe Aeren when he had his night terrors. But then, a few moments later, they heard poor Petal cry out in pain and Aeren’s screams turn shrill. This time Aeren wasn’t just having nightmares. Amele pauses, takes a breath, and then shows the PCs Aeren’s arms. They’re covered with fresh goblin bites.

When Alergast burst into the room,he found a goblin crouched on his son’s chest. Petal was dead, a knife deep inhis ear, and the goblin was frantically trying to chew off Aeren’s arm. Alergast attacked the goblin and chased it back intothe closet, where it clambered into a hole it had cleverly hidden under an old fur. Alergast flew into a rage, and as he started tearing apart the closet in an attempt to get at the goblin, Amele panicked and fled the house with her children to seek out Kelar for aid.

"Can you please come right away to help us?" she pleads.

Cyrus grew increasingly alarmed as Amele told her tale. "We'd best hurry, then!" he said to the others. "But first," he paused and checked the boy's arm.

22:43, Today: Cyrus Weaver rolled 2,5 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,5.
Just doing a quick check to see if the boy needs proper healing.

Cyrus is able to give the boy first aid and prevent the bites from causing lasting damage.

Do all of you go to investigate, or is there anything you want to ask/do before you go?

She leads the way to her house but stays outside as the four friends enter. They enter the modest dwelling and find it disturbingly silent. Upon reaching Aeren’s room, they find Alergast Barett on his belly, as if he had crawled into the closet. He is not moving.

What do you do? And roll Notice checks with your post, for my sanity.

The shrieking turns out to be tied to a largish goblin with blood-smeared face who springs from the closet. He appears enraged that you liberated the body of the homeowner and seems intent on taking out his anger on you. He is clearly feral or mad!

The only one who is ready for the goblin is Hywel, who gets to go before the goblin in the surprise round. Your move, Hywel! The Goblin is only 10' away from you and your companions.

Hywel's tactic could not have worked better--the goblin immediately saw & smelled dwarf and charged Hywel, a broken dagger in his mad hands. However, his attempt to disembowel the dwarf fails the goblin's blade bounces off of Hywel's magically hardened skin!

The goblin draws a Joker and parlays that to get a solid hit but rolls insufficient damage to hurt Hywel.

All the PCs are up! Everyone's within melee range of the goblin. You would all get a +3 Gang Up bonus on him if you all engage him.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!

Its likely a furious desperate struggle in those close quarters with a feral and desperate goblin.  But, dwarves train for such close fighting.  Hywel let his compatriots press the attack as he recovered from his last heavy slash.  Bringing his axe up this time, he found an opening and brought his beltaxe down like a smith's hammer...

Once the goblin falls under Hywel's axe, Jereth lowers his sword. The last hit spilled blood and guts on the floor and brought a sudden silence to the room. Hywel stared at the downed goblin and tugged his axe back loose from the greenskin corpse.  "Fine here," Hywel reported.  He then closed his eyes for a moment, releasing the arcane knot of energy that maintained his magic.  Ás his eyes opened, his iron gray skin began to crack.  Dissolving into flakes and rust, then nothingness.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
When the group heads out, Amalee awaits them eagerly, her kids waiting with friends and with Sheriff Hemlock. When she hears of her husband's fate, she has a complete breakdown. The Sheriff does his best to comfort her. He thanks the four for helping and arranges to have the Barett family stay at the cathedral for a few days.

Amele’s sister from Magnimar soon arrives in Sandpoint to take the distraught family back south to live with her. Kelar encounters her as the family moves to leave. When she learns who Kelar is, she shoots him a cold glare and mutters, “Too bad you heroes weren’t a bit more thorough in your ‘heroing.’”

Congratulations! Everyone gets an Advance, including our new player, Martak. (Sometimes it's good to be the new guy :-))

Kelar was known to the sister for being the shopkeep and the man who helped stop the goblin invasion. He doesn't know if she knows anything about his prior time as an adventurer.

Kelar also looks into the tunnel in the closet. It appears to Kelar that the golbin must have run into this house during the raid, found a loose floorboard in the closet, frantically hacked an opening large enough for him to fit into the enclosed crawlspace under the house, and pulled a fur over the hole to hide. Kelar pieces together that the family dog, Petal, must have kept the goblin penned up for several days before the goblin finally killed the dog and eventually the dad. Had the party not acted when they did, the rest of the family would likely have died as well.
