Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Cyrus sympathized with the bent caretaker as he himself leaned on his walking staff. Kelar was doing the talking, so Cyrus remained silent, though smiling, and glazed upon the graveyard.

07:01, Today: Cyrus Weaver rolled 13,-1 using 1d6-2,1d4-2, rerolling max with rolls of (6+6+3)15,1. Notice Check.

The man stiffens but shakes his head. "Nothing worth talking about here. You can look around, though, if y'like."

Another round of Notice checks as you check the graveyard.

"Thank you for your time."  Kelar thanks him and takes a look around

10:50, Today: Kelar Bauerson rolled 2,5 using d4,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,5. looking around the grave yard.
I had rolled streetwise earlier to ask around about the graveyard, I wanted to do that before going to graveyard (msg#3 above).  Did I find out anything?

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Cyrus let the others look around while he approached the caretaker and took him aside, hand on his shoulder. "I'm not built for so much walking," he said, overemphasizing his limp. "I don't know how you do it." Once they were out of earshot from the others, he said, "I know Kelar can be a bit... intense... direct. But I sense there's something you didn't mention. It was a really chaotic day between the ceremony and the attack, no one would blame you if you did see something and forgot to report it or were off doing something else and truly didn't see anything. But any information is better than none. If you know something, you can just tell me and I'll find a way to reveal it without letting the others know it came from you."

13:31, Today: Cyrus Weaver rolled 6,7 using 1d6+2,1d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 4,5. Persuasion .

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!

Hywel really did intend to have a good look around for anything suspicious.  But, the gravestones and tomb carvings prove too distracting  his attention is quickly split by the searching and cataloguing the cultual lettering variations by age.  Fascinating stuff.  Really.

17:01, Today: Hywel of Clan Silverscroll rolled 3,3 using D6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,3. Notice!

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Kelar and Hywel do some searching while Jereth keeps watch.

Kelar does find something interesting...

Meanwhile, Cyrus talks with the gravekeeper, who can be seen whispering things to Cyrus.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Seeing Cyrus talking to the groundskeeper, Kelar hopes Cyrus has more luck than he did.  He motions to Hywel, and calls Jereth over.

"It looks like someone tried to dig up or bury something at Father Tobyn's grave." he says.  Father Tobyn is the former rector of the church

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Hywel looked up at the mention of his name, pausing his note taking.  Paper and charcoal are put away as the wizard hurries over to Kelar.  "What's that?" he inquired, looking over the scene, "Father Tobyn, hmm?  Rock and stone, why would anyone want to disturb the rest of such a one?"

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
As his friends started their search and spoke with the gravekeeper Jereth smiled.  He knew that they would be able to figure out whatever it was the Kelar had been wondering about.  Instead Jereth concentrated on standing by the entrance and watching the streets around the cemetery.  He wasn't sure why, but a part of him didn't want the people of Sandpoint to disturb their search.  Better to let them figure it out, and then decide what to do with it, then have a gathering form with everyone spouting off theories and generally getting in the way.

OOC:  Jereth rolled a critical fumble on a Notice check.  Not sure if one was even needed, but feel free to mess with him because of that.  :)

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
At Hywel's words, the gravekeeper waves the four close to him.

"Cyrus has sworn for you that you would not tell, so that binds you. Mark my words, don't go telling people about this, not
even the sherriff yet.

"During that thrice-damned goblin raid, someone came into the graveyard and stole..." He fights back tears. "Stole the body of Father Hywel. I found out an hour after the raid was over, and spend the whole night searching the woods. The cursed thief was good at covering his tracks--I think he must have flown, because he left no tracks anywhere around here. I don't know why anyone'd steal the good Father's body. He was like an uncle to me.

"I told Father Zantus, and he asked to keep this quiet. If you want to help him figure this out, go see him."

The group subsequently searches and confirms what Naffer told them: there are signs that there were goblins here who set up a ladder to let in someone bigger, probalby a human. It's a reasonable guess for the group that this person was the goblins' "longshanks" leader. Inside, it's clear the human-sized humanoid dug up the body and then either flew away, teleported away or something along those lines, for his trail ends cold there.

What do you do?

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!

Hywel listened to the tale and looked over the ground.  He stroked his beard thoughtfully as he pondered, "A ladder to get in....  But skill enough to escape by more magical means....   That is a curiousity, right enough...."   The wizard gives a glance to the sky and the horizon.  He doubted the enemy would still be lingering so long after his foul deed, but he checked anyway.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Jereth shook his head in clear puzzlement.  "I just don't want to imagine what could make a man fall so far that he uses goblins against innocent people.  Even the Families haven't sunk so low."  He scanned the area around them once more and then turned his eyes towards the new Cathedral.  "We should speak with the rector.  Father Zantus might have more information."  He nodded his head, sure in his own decision, and raised an eyebrow towards the rest of the group seeking their opinions.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
As they left, he waved farewell to the gravekeeper and he said loud enough for him to hear, "And just so that we have our stories straight, we heard there was goblin activity in the graveyard, went to investigate, and found that Father Hywel's body was missing. No mention of how we came to discover that fact. Right?"

"The only way we'd know it was missing was if we dug it up." Kelar points out.  "We certainly found it disturbed.  We could offer to dig it up to make sure the body is safe..."

The four friends arrive at the Cathedral and ask to see the rector. He appears a few minutes later.

"Hail, heroes of the festival! I thank you again for your bravery. What may I do to serve?"

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Hywel falls in with the rest, still pondering the scene.  The suggestion of digging up the grave does rouse him from his thoughts though, "I do agree that we may have to...  But I do hate to disturb the graveyard still more.  Perhaps te rector will know more and it may be unneccessary..."  The wizard does so hope.  It may seem a small thing in the ace of the recent devastation, but the sacred should be...well...sacred.  Upon reaching the cathedral, Hywel would have his spirits lightened at the sight of the familiar stonework.  To the rector, he offers a now of the head in return for the greeting, "Hail to you as well, sir.   We...have a few questions that perhaps you can help with?"  The dwarf then glances to the others to continue.

"Yes, we were doing some follow-up investigation. We heard that some goblins were seen over by the graveyard and when we went there..." The young witch stared at the rector's feet, causing his head to bow slightly. "... and saw that the grave of Father Tobyn was disturbed..." he then paused to let Kelar or Jareth deliver the request.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Jereth's face is a mixture of pride and embarrassment at being called a Hero.  Still, he tries not to allow it to distract him from their current goal.  Looking around the entrance and the main room of the Cathedral he shakes his head and speaks softly.  "Before we get down to brass tacks.  Is there some place more private where we might discuss the matter?   If the wrong ears hear this it might make things more interesting than any of us would care for."

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
At this, Father Zantus' face becomes quite serious. He nods and leads the group into the hallways of the cathedral to a private meeting room.

He turns to the group. "Firstly, thank you for your discretion. It is much appreciated.

"Your suspicions are correct. Father Tobyn's grave was disturbed, and his body taken. Naffer told me and several of my more trustrworthy clerics and I verified. It appears that someone in league with the goblins put a ladder to the graveyard wall during the goblin raid, went in, dug up my predecessor's body and then promptly left, either through flight or teleportation.

"I am currently attempting to scry or divine my way to more details, but whoever did this has magical means of concealing themselves as well. Something is afoot gentlemen, but I do not have many more details right now.

"I also have told all this to Sheriff Hemlock, who is conducting his own investigation. Between us, I expect us to turn something up.

"I think I know your minds. You would aid us in investigating, I think. While your hearts are in the right place, I would strongly urge you not to do so. There are already too many feet stamping about, and I fear we are only aiding the perpetrators in this matter if we flood the ground looking for them.

"However, considering your interest, I will keep you appraised on what we find and if you can be of aid, I will not hesitate to ask."

He seems entirely sincere in this. It clearly pains him that he feels that there is nothing more the party can do at this time.

Cyrus looked to his companions. He did not have any followup questions and doubted he could get anywhere with the good Father. "Thank you. We of course will hold this information in confidence. If there is any way we can help, do not hesitate to seek us out."

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
"Why take his body?"  Kelar asks, half to himself.  Addressing Zantus directly, he asks, "Was he perhaps, buried with a relic?  What use could his body be?  Some Dark magical ritual perhaps?"
