Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick

Jereth didn't argue the point with Aradhel, because, honestly, he was not at his best and might be a liability.  He also did not argue with the healers about "There's no time" or "What about the ogres?"  Instead, he did what he could to make it easier to do what was needed.  Which, likely, mostly involved being still and not making a fuss.  Which was hard.  Because there was alot of hurt to fuss about.  Luckily, Bella was very good at her job.

He was just shrugging back into his armor, with the help of someone hopefully, when he heard the commotion regarding the premature charge of Koram.  Tugging the hauberk into place so that it can be belted, he said, "We know where they are, we need a plan of attack.  So that we may kill them all.  We have been lucky thus far."  Says the man who was nearly killed.  Twice.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella moved to assist Jereth with donning his armor once her kit was ready for travel.

She nodded in agreement with Aradhel and Jereth, "The sounds from below would suggest the Ogres are fortifying and taking positions that would allow them to defend the base of the stairs as a choke point like we did the top of the tower at the wall."

Turning her attention to Jakardros and the Black Arrows she probed further, "Is there a room above them where oil or arrows may be used against invaders as a defense?  If so, do we have a method of accessing it without having to fully descend the tower stairs?"

"Having the high ground would be of use."  Aradhel admitted, curious to hear their response.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Koram wasn't happy of the talk of using holes from above to kill the ogres. That seemed dishonorable. Have the courage to face your opponent in battle and watch him die as you cut him open. That was his way of thinking. But these ogres had ambushed him while asleep and taken him prisoner of all things. So he would not be too upset at slaughtering them in holes.

Still  more was the fact that those who had found him were obviously weaker than his kind so they probably needed to fight this way to survive. And they had saved his life. So he owed them a life debt. He would protect them until he had paid his debt.

Visibly frustrated Koram paced back and forth as he waited for the group to get finished with their preparations.

The Black Arrows talked among themselves while Shalelu stood off to one side, looking a bit annoyed. Jakardros finally steps up and says, "We can't think of any. Any arrow slits are from the walls of the keep outside. I don't think we ever anticipated anyone being IN the Keep that we needed to get OUT. It was always the other way 'round."

Shalelu steps forward. "No, there wouldn't be any way unless we create it. Don't you have two mages here? What if one of them had their big golem-thing punch a hole in the ceiling and enter that way? They wouldn't be expecting that, for sure. Plus, doesn't this mage here have sleep gas?" she adds, pointing to Archimedes.

It's then that you realize that Archimedes is below in the courtyard, not listening to your conversation.

Aradhel sighed.  "Do I need to retrieve him?  Can you keep this one-"  She meant Koram.  "From killing us all while I do it?"

Koram frowned. "I won't attack you unless you attack me first. Why would I kill all of you? That would be dishonorable."

In reply to The Runelord (msg # 516):

"The tree Golem is not all powerful, but it might be able to punch a hole in the wall." Tanlis said in agreement with the plan.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick

Jereth gave a quick nod to Aradhel's question and turned to Koram, "She is worried that in your rush to get revenge, your charge may leave the rest of us more vulnerable and unprepared.  I don't usually like waiting either, but if we plan it right we can get them all in one go.  All."  He repeated the last, hoping the thought of complete vengeance would help.  He then looked to Tanlis, "Perhaps your...tree golem...and Archimedes creation working together could make shorter work of the hole?  Through which the sleep gas can be put to them."  The guardsman looked over to the Arrows and the Ranger, "What exits would they have.  As they would likely attempt to leave once the gas is released amongst them.  If we can ward those exits, it would be safer then leaping in the middle of them."

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Jakardros talks to his men and nods. "The only exits are the stairs up to these towers, which you've already seen, and the front gate. There are warrens deeper within the complex that they can retreat into, but there are no exits from those. That was why we perished--they trapped most of us in the keep. We could watch each way, but we'd have to spread our numbers thin."

To translate: that's four potential exits--three towers and front door.

Archimedes felt very vulnerable where he was so he pressed a button on the metal man and it collapsed back into a flask.

Placing it in a pocket he clicked his back pack to activate his climbing legs

Ooc
06:32, Today: Archimedes Fallows rolled 4,1 using D8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,1.  Weird science roll

And started to climb back up to the others

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella considered the information shared by Jakardros.  It seemed odd that the defenders didn't have defenses to use against a force that had breeched the walls, but no matter it was what it was and they needed to clear our the Ogres.

Jereth's plan had merit, but it sounded as if there were lots of inner rooms for the fiends to fall back to or potentially stage an ambush from.

"What is the layout of the chambers below?  Are the other rooms interconnected?  Could we gain access through one of them for surprise?"  Koram's impatience was infectious, she too was wanting to do something.  Maybe she could creep down the stairs and take a peek....

"Do large tapestries adorn the walls in the hall at the base if the stairs?" the Gypsy wondered aloud, thinking of possible cover for hiding.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick

Jereth shook his head, looking to Aradhel, "They have a point.  Quicker.  Descend a stair and see what can be seen or heard from there?  The longer we give them, the worse it will be."  The guardsman then turned back to Bella, "If we can gas them out, we might have no need to go in amongst them at all."  He then moved his attention on to Archimedes, "How much of the gas do you have left?"  He indicated the building in question, "Enough to make that unsuitable for them?  Down the stairs and perhaps through a hole in the roof?"

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella looked towards Aradhel with a slight shrug of sympathy, she was just as puzzled as sneaking down to see where the Ogres were exactly seemed like a good idea to her.

"Although having the group of Ogres storming the tower stairs in an attempt to get away from any noxious substance puts us back in the predicament of having to hold them at bay without being overrun.  Unless there was a way to safeguard against several of them bursting forth at once?" the young woman added as they volleyed ideas.  She still thought going down to have a look would be the most productive approach, not to mention doing something was much better than just waiting...

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Jereth held up a hand, a bit defensively, looking back to Aradhel in earnest, "Not out of the question at all.  I agree that we need to know something, I just felt that we should do so with more speed.  A suggestion.  I will always trust your instincts.  I wouldn't be alive without them.  Go...just...come back."  He held the look for long enough to be sure that Aradhel understood that he was not standing in her way at all.  He then continued on to Bella, noting, "Hopefully, the gas will do the work of reducing their numbers and ability to burst forth.  As I see it, we either hold the exits in defense or we storm the hall.  I would rather hold and let the gas do much of the work.  If you see another path, please say so."

Koram's hands seem to be gripping and loosening on his glaive as he scans the area, his tongue darting in and out rapidly. He seems agitated and ready for action.
