Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Fort Rannick is located at the northern end of a wide valley that runs along the southern edge of the mountains. This bleak landscape stretches on for miles along the border between the mountains and Kreegwood. This rugged, forlorn landscape fits well with the morose and grim attitude of its guardians, the Order of the Black Arrow.

You approach with plenty of cover through the hills and get a clean look at the fortress. The first thing you notice, to the obvious displeasure of the three Black Arrow members, is that there are ogres patrolling the wall of the fortress.

Vale curses up a storm while Jakardros states the obvious. "The fort has been taken. We have to figure out how to take it back," he growls.

"I shall reconnoiter." It was half statement, half unspoken question of was she going to do it alone with Aradhel's stunted method of speaking.

Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick

Jereth didn't bat an eye at the notion of retaking a fort from an unknown number of ogre fiends with a handful of adventurers.  It was the only logical course of action.  At Aradhel's statement, he offered, "Two is better.  Who else should go?"  He was clearly willing, but the guardsman was also clearly in noisy, shiny armor.  Scouting is not really his forte, so that decision is best left to the expert.

"I could try to obverse the place in bird form." Tanlis suggested. "However, I would want to do so as a ritual so I don't have to use up my energies. It might take about 10 minutes or so,  and Cyrus could help..."

"There is no reason not to do either so we shall do both."  Aradhel pointed out in her laconic style.  She sheathed her weapons and adjusted her boots.

"Very well, if you are to follow, follow as the moon follows the night."

Okay, wasn't asked for it but in the spirit of keeping this flowing here's a roll.

16:48, Today: Aradhel rolled 8,16 using d12,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 8,(6+6+4)16.  Sneaky Elf.

Aradhel is in no hurry and will use any cover, crawl, etc. for any possible bonuses.

"Help with what? Performing your ritual? If you don't mind the possibility of being turned into a bird permanently, sure." Cyrus smirked. Transmutation had a particular reputation among witches, quite unlike the magics that Tanlis channeled.

Shalelu stops Jereth. "Are you being thick on purpose? I'm here as your SCOUT. Stay here; Aradhel and I will report back. Besides..." She shoots her father a fell look. "...I need some fresh air." A peculiar statement, given that you're outside.

Giving Aradhel a chance to react.

Aradhel just looked at her.  If she was coming or going, she needed to come or go.

Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
In reply to Cyrus Weaver (msg # 6):

Tanlis made the tsk-tsk noise. "Our two magics are closer than you think. We could learn a lot from each other. Such a shame you have no confidence in your skills..." He sighed in mock-disappointment, like Cyrus was some unruly apprentice. He did grin while he did so, however.

Jereth eyed Shalelu in mild surprise at the outburst, "My apologies.  I am more used to deferring to Aradhel when it comes to scouting."  To whit, he gives Aradhel a questioning look about whether or not she seems to care about this rude, angry, impulsive stranger accompanying her.

Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Aradhel and Shalelu melt into the foliage and reconnoiter. A thunderbolt shakes the stone and earth underfoot, its low growl echoing through the valley. Talons of lightning claw at the sky, casting pale light on the mountainside below. The lightning storm reveals a grim fortress of dark gray stone standing sentinel over the valley, huddled desperately at the base of two sheer cli sides. Crumbling,  fifteen-foot- high walls ring the citadel, the stone pitted and cratered from hurled boulders and ogre hooks. Like the face of a veteran with decades of winters under his belt, the fortís craters, cracks, and scars are testament to its battle-weary history. A stone keep, a stubborn shadow against the mountainside, rises from behind the worn walls, a single tower jutting up from its ramparts like an ugly broken tooth. Nearby, a rushing curtain of white water cascades downs the mountainside into a large pool of water just outside the fortís walls.

The pair spot an ogre watching the gate.  More importantly, the pair spot something of interest: a cave underneath the waterfall. The pair think it might lead under or into the fortress.

Meanwhile, Jakardros snaps back into a businesslike state of mind when Shalelu leaves. He draws out a map for the party. He suggests several ways into the place:

The Sluice Gate: On the south wall of the fort, a sluice gate opens to release refuse and sewage downhill into the creek. The group can attempt to circumvent the gates of Rannick by breaching this narrow access way instead, but its proximity to the South Gate might be a problem.

"Otherwise, we could talk our way in, if one of you is good with the palaver."

Map of the whole facility as provided by the Black Arrow guys.

"It's the... refuse chute..."  Aradhel didn't quite know the right words for the sluice gate in the common tongue.  "... or we can attempt to see if that cave is an escape tunnel.  If we do the former, you best be sure your step is light."

"I might be able to sneak in as a small animal, and then open the gate in my human form." He offered. "Once it was open I am sure the place would be on high alert." The druid pointed out.

Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Archimedes turns to the group "may I suggest something?" He asked " I can scale down the rocks to the gate " he says pressing a button on his back pack and eight spider like metal legs unfold from it before folding back up

"Once down there I could attempt to pick the lock I take it the gate is locked? And them you can all climb down on ropes.t hat way we are not all gathered before the gate as sitting target"

Jereth quietly looked over the maps and considered the information provided.   At each suggestion, he regarded the suggester with somewhat surprised admiration, "Well.  With such skills, getting in does not seem to be our main problem.  What do we do when we get in?  What do we know about the numbers and disposition of the enemy?  What do they want out of the fortress?  Why did they take it in the first place?  In other words, what makes them stay?"

"I don't know if there's any way of knowing that without getting in there."  She looked to her lock picking companion.  "But can you do that undetected?"

Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
"If we capture one of them, I can interrogate them. Give them the old evil eye and their secrets will be laid bare." Cyrus made a gesture to his left eye. "I fear that any plan that involves opening either gate or scaling the walls is doomed to failure. It is best that we enter by the most inconspicuous means possible. Or we just let ourselves get captured and hope they don't kill us immediately." It was unclear how serious that last suggestion was.

Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
"The more we talk about it, the more exotic trying to access one of the gates seems.  It seems exploring the other entrance is simpler, more clear."  Aradhel pointed out.  Her words and manner of speech were as usual a little bit off.

"At worst, it doesn't connect but we know there's nothing at our backs, or we have a base for further reconnoiters."
