Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick

Jereth was up quickly enough.  Though he had removed his chain mail to rest.  He'd been stuck in it for a very long time.  The retaking of the fort had been long....and painful...  But, he quickly took up his sword again.  The glittering blade singing out of the scabbard.  His shield was taken up too.  So armed, he was ready to go "check it out" with the others.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Shalelu nods and convinces the other Black Arrows to stay in the barracks while the party heads up.

The party moves and finds that Kaven is nowhere to be found. You eventually head toward the tower and discover two new developments: Kaven's body lies, lifeless, just outside the open door to the stairs up, and a red field of energy blocks the way up...

Medicine check to identify what Kaven died from, and Smarts checks from Bella and Tanlis about the barrier.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
The man appears to have been slain by some kind of life-draining magic. It appears, of all things, that his life was drained through his mouth--a kiss killed him!!

Tanlis determines that he could, in fact, cancel this barrier given a bit of time--it is a magical ward that burns on touch, something that he has experience counter-spelling, as does Bella.

Spellcasting roll to try to beat it at -2 to the roll, Tanlis, if you like. Bella can assist you--or you can assist Bella if you like. Assuming you want to drop the barrier.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella studied the energies of the barrier and tried to remained focused on her recitation to help Tanlis in his attempt to counter the crimson wall, but her mind kept returning to Kaven's fate as she wondered what manner of being was the culprit.  Demonic or Infernal was likely, but she couldn't shake the thought that Myriana might be something other than what the Gypsy had first deduced.  These thoughts caused her cadence to falter somewhat and thus fall short of the outcome she had intended.

(OOC: 21:18, Today: Silvijabella rolled 1,3 using 1d6,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,3.  Performance/Spellcasting to assist Tanlis in countering Barrier.  Presuming it was Spellcasting as a knowledge and thus the 3 was applicable.  The 1 was on the spellcasting die if that matters.)

In reply to The Runelord (msg # 828):

"I think it's safe to safe whatever killed Kaven is behind that barrier. I may need Bella's to disable it." Tanlis said. He holds off on doing so until the others are ready.

He bent down to examine the body. "It looks like his life was drained out of his mouth. A succubus maybe?" He looks about the room at the others.

"We should have broken the lantern.  Do what you can."  Aradhel commented, having no ability to assist here.  She'd consider other options if this failed.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick

Jereth stood by on guard, gripping his blade with white knuckle tension.  He eyed the dead man grimly, but there was nothing more to be done there.  He eyed the barrier, but it was magic and therefore beyond his ken.  His eyes narrowed a bit as a thought occurred, "If that lantern was a doorway...  Why would something step through, kill someone, then step back to the doorway?  Why not step through....and close the door...?  With some sort of glowy wall.  Which would leave the thing to wander the fort.  Why assume that it is in there?"

"You may well be correct.  Though they may be preparing something worse.  If this can be dispelled with relative quickness we should check first."  Aradhel acknowledged.  "We just can't know."

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella nodded at Tanlis' conjecture regarding the creature, "Or possibly something else with a stronger tie to the history of this place…" she offered.  She considered Jereth's observation, "True, whatever killed him may still be around here."

The elf maid shook her head in frustration at her inability to clear the man's death from her mind and hoped Tanlis was able to collapse the barrier.

(OOC: 'Bella's attempt to assist was a bust from the looks of it, so it's all up to Tanlis.  [No pressure or anything... ;) ])

In reply to Silvijabella (msg # 834):

Tanlis nodded at Bella's suggestion. However, he still needed time to undo the barrier. He focused on the land, slowly moved his staff through the air, and let out a low meditative hum. Feeling the energy of the magic as a web, and his power slowly undoing each thread.

OOC:

13:00, Today: Tanlis Half-elven rolled 5,7 using 1d10-2,1d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 7,(6+3)9.  Attempt to dispel barrier.

It takes Tanlis a few minutes, but before too long the barrier falters, then fades, leaving the doorway open!

What do you do now?

"Right."  Jereth took point last time, it was her turn.  "Count of ten after I disappear, then go."

Aradhel had a trick of her own though, she was light as a feather on her feet.  It would be hard but she might be capable of a surprise attack.

17:20, Today: Aradhel rolled 6,4 using d12,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 6,4.  Sneaky, Sneaky Elf.

Jereth gave a simple nod of agreement and confirmed, "Ten."  As she ascended, he took position to follow.  His shield was up, his sword resting along the top edge.  He quietly counted down his charge...

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella waited behind Tanlis, although waiting was hard.

She wanted to see what was in the room, but she forced herself to mentally count to ten... three times: in Elven, common, and her people's tongue in the time it took Jereth to start moving up behind Aradhel.

She hurried along behind Tanlis, careful not to get too close; but if he stopped suddenly she was going to run into him.  Her eyes scanned the stairs beyond inquisitively.

Aradhel heads up the stairs, followed by the other three. Aradhel ascends and quickly notes a change.

The others are still ascending at this point. The rest of the party is just walking upstairs--giving Aradhel a chance to respond.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Aradhel saw her chance, but she was no murderer without cause.  She would be careful.

Retract the Claws.

Since Aradhel was attacking without asking first, she did her best to merely incapacitate.

So Aradhel is going for Nonlethal Damage (-1 penalty to hit with the flats of her swords), however having The Drop (+4) and Wild Attacking (+2) still means a massive attack bonus of +5.

+1 for her right hand sword:

21:06, Today: Aradhel rolled 8,9 using d12+6,d6+6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,3.  Fighting - Right Hand.

I am guessing that hits but very debatable of that's a Raise.  However with WA +2, The Drop +4 and +1 from the sword bet it'll do okay.

21:08, Today: Aradhel rolled 21 using 2d8+7, rerolling max with rolls of 7,7.  Strength, Sword, WA, Drop, Sword Bonus.

Oh yeah it did okay. 21 damage

lol good thing I stacked all those modifiers let's try the left:

21:06, Today: Aradhel rolled 11,9 using d12+5,d6+5, rerolling max with rolls of 6,4.  Fighting - Left Hand.

18 damage if that's a Raise, 14 damage if not - 21:09, Today: Aradhel rolled 14,4 using 2d8+6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,3,4.  Strength, Sword, WA, Drop, Raise.

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
Aradhel springs in and attacks silently. To her considerable shock, the blade bounces off of the woman's skin as if it were scaled! The second blow does manage to drive the wind out of the woman's gut.

The woman turns and fixes Aradhel with a cold, cold look. "That was a mistake. Stand down and speak, or I will destroy you where you stand."

She has not as yet seemed to notice the others coming up the stairs.

On first attack, the attack hits the woman's Parry of 8 and would do 2 Wounds after the woman's Toughness of 12. She has to spend two of her 8 Bennies, but she Soaks. The second also hits and leaves the woman Shaken!

The woman wins the initiative draw, spends a Benny to un-shake and is Holding.

Woman Parry 8, Toughness 12 (5), Bennies 5

Tanlis, make a Notice check to see if you can hear this conversation clearly.

Tanlis overhears the woman speaking to Aradhel.

You are about 30' down the stairs behind Jereth and in front of Bella, Tanlis. What do you do, if anything?

Tanlis gestures for the other to be silent as he tries to creep ahead quietly. Trying to get the drop on the woman Aradhel was clearly fighting.

OOC: Trying for stealth.
12:08, Today: Tanlis Half-elven rolled 5,10 using 1d4,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of (4+1)5,(6+4)10.  Stealth.)

Aradhel positioned her swords for a fight, but she did back off from the assault.

"You will do no such thing on your best day, I didn't even hit you with the edge.  You have some nerve, intruding in this place where you do not belong, accusing me of making a mistake when you come on the heels of murdering ogres via a cursed artifact.  I congratulate you though, that's an impressive showing.  But if you speak I will speak.  If you fight, I will fight."

Tanlis sneaks up and peers around a corner, spotting the woman talking with Aradhel. The woman clearly is preoccupied with Aradhel for the moment and does not notice him.

Jereth, Bella, do you hold while Tanlis sneaks up? If not, what do you do?

Re: Chapter 8: Retaking Rannick
'Bella looked a bit puzzled when Tanlis moved up past Jereth, given the swordsman was the countering Shield to the Elf's Sword.  However, the fact remained that he was moving closer, and if she followed she might could see what was occupying Aradhel….  Hadn't Jereth reached '10' yet? she thought as they closed the distance behind the warrior.

The Ryhissian maid softened her step even further, moving silently, but not wanting to get ahead of Jereth - after all, he had armor, a shield, and a sword and whatever had drained the life from Kaven was most likely not susceptible to her guile.  Especially if who- or what- ever it was, was already agitated.  Better to remain back…

'Bella listened for any cues down the hall as to whether or not there was an exchange of steel, spell, or speech.

(OOC - of course, once she hears conversation, she'll want to be at least close enough to follow the conversation…  Can 'Bella hear from where she is?  She won't advance beyond Jereth, but is trying to be stealthy and listen.)
