Re: Prologue

In reply to Enrei Omal'i (msg # 454):

As Brennan strides forward to grab the man by his collar Titus allows the angry archer some latitude.  He retrieves his knife and grabs the skinning knife wielded by the other man.

He kneels next to the dying man.

There is nothing we can do for you.  Tell me what is going on in that building and I will ease your passing into whatever dream awaits you.

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 455):

(OOC:  Titus, stop runnning around between people while we're talking ;P

The bleeding man looks like he's having difficulty speaking, which makes sense.  His teeth are gritted and his eyes wild.

Titus has to lean down to hear what he's saying.

Enrei's captive is more able to speak.  "Carry me in," he agrees.

The final enemy, now under the shadow of Brennan's arrow, is more forthright.  "It's nothing you'd understand... are you Inquisitors?"

Titus heaves a heave sigh and whispers to the dying man

He takes the axe and with one chop as cleanly as possible finishes the dying man.  He kneels over him with a tear in his eye.

For some reason I don't trust you.  You are far too chipper about that suggestion.  What is in there.  Tell me or I swear I'll have Uldaf burn that fucking hut to the ground.

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 460):

From the A-frame building, voices can be heard.  Loud and warbling, almost like song but incomprehensible.

"Let me go in," the man in Enrei's arms insists.  "And we won't harm you, I swear it!  The ritual has begun!"

The man on the ground is again more forthright, "The ritual will open a gateway between the Dreams.  Through that hole we will have insight."

Re: Prologue

Enrei looks at the building, and the odd voices, and considers the men they have encountered from it so far, "Okay," he finally intones.  However, unlike his last captive he does not immediately release this one.  Instead, one hand slips free to grab him by the pant waist and he heaves the man up over his head.  "You will go in," he says as he takes one step forward and reels back to heave the man at the doorway.  He hurls the body at the flap of leather and as soon as the airborn body is through, the islander chases it in, not even waiting to hear the thud on the other side.

((I feel like I should roll something for this.  what should I roll to attack the building with its former occupant?
update: 2x8 to chuck him through the door and into as much on the other side as possible and then ruin everything.))

In reply to Enrei Omal'i (msg # 462):

Quite happy with my stance on the matter Titus, and I'll thank you for not coming on to me again like that in public.

As for the ritual, are we sure we want to be completing something our perpetrator here is informing us might rip a hole in the fabric of reality? Sounds unnecessary and dangerous to me. Let's notify the proper authorities, tie em up, and turn them in for crimes against the village.

Surely there's honor and coin in that?

Titus laughs with no mirth or warmth.

that's funny.  You say you won't hurt us.

He gestures to his friend that Brennan is now holding by the collar

He says he won't kill us if we let him go.  So one of you is as full of shit as Kragga's stable.  I think I hate both of you right now.

He sees Enrei lift the man and throw him through the door and smiles.  Titus will switch over to his knife and cut the hide flap down being sure to keep himself from being silhouetted in the doorframe.  He holds his throwing knife at the ready.

One last time.  He says to the man in Brennans arms.  How many are in there.  Tell me or my knife flies.

Re: Prologue

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 465):

"I said we were here to help," Brenna says to the man before glancing at the building. His expression looks strained, like a man trying to remember something he's forgotten and not quite managing it. "What is... no. No, that can't be right. That singing..."

Judging the man either irrelevant at this point or in good hands under Titus's knife, Brennan releases his captive rather roughly and follows Enrei into the building as quickly as he can.

Titus remains with his knife poised to throw aiming at his only target.

Just stay on the ground and I won't get jumpy.  If you want to move to a more comfortable position I will let you.  I'd offer to get that arrow out of your leg but you don't want me doing anything involved with healing.  I've only played a doctor once on stage... turns out it wasn't lupus.

... So what in the dream of hell were you doing?  Why lure us here only to attack us?  You do realize that you could have not harassed Brennan and we would have passed you by.  Instead you are grievously injured your friend with the axe is dead... what was his deal anyway?  And now my friends are in there probably tossing your people around like rag dolls.

Re: Prologue

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 468):

Outside

The man grits his teeth.  "The ritual requires sacrifice," is his only response.

Titus' friends disappear through the flap/door.

Inside

Enrei charges after the wounded man, followed closely by Brennan and then Uldaf.

The inside of the building is dimly lit, a combination of a small cookfire and bits of fading sunlight leaking between the logs that make up the walls.  The air inside feels dense and oppressive and stinks of meat and something else.

The building is only twenty feet wide, but at least a hundred feet deep.  The small cookfire burns in the center of the room, acrid smoke trailing up through a hole left in the roof.

All around the fire are dark shapes and once your eyes adjust you see that these are corpses a mixture of man and beast.  They are stacked at least two deep and laid out haphazard about the fire so that getting from one end of the building to the other would require climbing through the mess.

At the far end of the building sits a large chunk of rock, nearly half the size of a man.  It is orange and partly transparent so that the shifting light piercing the walls sends cascades of red and yellow through it.  On the top of the rock is a pointy metal object that appears to be made of brass or the like.

Beside this stands a man in long white robe, hands raised.  The chanting is coming from him and he does not stop when you enter.  His voice is loud and strong, somehow echoing off of the wooden walls and amplifying the shadows cast from the cookfire through the corpses that surround it.  His words too echo in your skull, as if they were physical objects rattling around doing their best to crack the bone and pierce the backs of your eyes.

Enrei's erstwhile missile (the man) has landed upon some of the corpses and now struggles to stand.

From one side the wounded man who fled earlier bellows and prepares his assault.

Combat Round

Disposition:  Without running, you can get halfway to the man at the pillar.  This will require a body or coordination + athletics or Run check to traverse the corpses without falling.  Titus may enter the building in one round but will not be able to attack anyone inside (his action would be to get his bearings).

If you want to run you can get across the corpses this round but cannot act and the check will be harder.

The man who fled is now armed with a short log, the man Enrei threw is working his way to his feet but is not armed.  The man in robes does not appear to be armed.

The man in robes continues to chant, though he certainly notices you, his voice rising in tone and power.

Between the unweildliness of the log and Enrei's speed, your assailant is too slow to do any damage.  Enrei's fist cracks into his face which is now bloodied.

The third man picks himself up off of the ground and rises to his feet.

Man in robes:
Club guy (fled into building): 3 killing, 4 shock to R. leg.  3 killing L. arm, 3 Killing head
Knife guy (unarmed, arm disabled, prone): 3 shock to R. leg.  7 Shock 1 killing R arm.  3 shock L. arm, 4 shock body
Brawling guy (leg disabled): 8 killing to R. leg

Enrei wraps the man in a tight lock, pinning him.

The un-engaged enemy moves to free his companion, but stops at the 'thrum' sound of Brennan's bow.

The arrow streaks across the building and strikes the man in the robes squarely in the head but... stops without piercing, sending an explosion of white sparks that arc over the pile of corpses.

"That's..." the man in robes gets out in the King's tongue, "... You've started the..."

The large amber pedestal at the center of the man's works suddenly glows white hot for an instant, then shimmers and roars.  A pulse of white energy surges outward in an expanding ring and slams into each of you.

Then the world goes dark for a moment.
