History
At the rebirth of the 1st Regiment in 3117, there was a question quietly asked. What access would it be given to the Regimental Omnimechs, as it was the unit meant to represent the Guards and their system as a whole? At the time the question was ignored, but by 3122 it was asked with a far louder voice, and in that moment Haddings showed it was not above the politics of the rest of the Inner Sphere, as none of the Regiments wished to share their totemic Omnimechs, at least not to a non 'Tribute'. Though frustrated by the reticence of the four Colonels, Lt. General Arcand let the argument pass on to his successor, who had a very different alternative in mind.
Instead he commissioned the development of a brand new Omnimech, based upon the long standing favorite design of the Talos, by the same engineering team that put together the more exclusive Guard Omnimechs. The result was the Storm Lord, a 50 ton Omnimech that, while not replacing, could certainly become the workhorse and symbol of the 12th Star Guards. It was three years in development before the team had it up and running, borrowing many of the parts from the standard Talos in order to ease maintenance and supply lines, while its communications and electronics were developed to be shared with future Omni designs. With nearly half of its weight devoted to weapons and equipment, the Storm Lord promised to be perfectly suited to any role needed of a Medium design.
After its testing was finished, the design was presented to the Aegis board for discussion on construction, and it was then that a snag was hit. Both Kariban and Bell Dynamic began a bidding war that soon threatened to rend the conglomerate apart as neither side was willing to give an inch. For years Bell Dynamic executives had become concerned, then threatened by the successful and continuing designs that Kariban-Victoria were providing the Guards. There were even the strong possibility that Kariban was looking to stage their own takeover of Bell in a reverse of what had nearly happened after the Jihad.
It was Rebecca Magnus, one of her last decisions before stepping down as CEO of Aerostar, that made the resolution that both the board and the 12th Star Guards would eventually approve. A new subsidiary partner of Aegis would be formed with Kariban, Bell, and Aerostar all having an equal stake. This new subsidiary, Aegis Engineering, would pursue all future Omnimech designs for the conglomerate, leaving standard BattleMechs to Bell and Kariban-Victoria. Over the past three years a manufacturing line was built on Alci, and in March of 3133, the first run of Storm Lords was finished and distribution was earmarked for the 1st Regiment, as will the next three runs.
Capabilities
With a 250 XL engine allowing a top speed of 85 kph, the Storm Lords is immediately faster than its proginator 'Mech, while its four permanently installed jump jets provide it with a great deal of maneuverability. Outfitted with Bell Dynamic's compact Gyro, and equipped with clan-spec endo-steel and eight tons of ferro-fibrous armor, the Storm Lord is not only only rugged, but also has a large amount of internal space free for weaponry.
In its primary configuration, it become essentially a faster Talos, with an ER PPC as its main weapon to provide long range fire that could continue in a closer range. Additionally, four ER Medium Lasers and two Streak SRM-6 missile systems were included to provide a withering medium to close range set of secondary weapons, allowing the Storm Lord to to easily step into the well known roll of the Talos.
With its advanced gyro, and the common familiarity every Mechwarrior of the Guards have with the Talos, it is surprisingly easy to pilot. This has allowed its pilots to focus more on other things, with many claiming that moving the Storm Lord was almost natural.
Deployment
The first ten Storm Lords have been exclusively deployed to the 1st Regiment, though not all have been activated. Off the record, it is believed that some are meant for both deployed companies, but they are also likely to be saved for additional units soon to be formed.
Configurations:
Surprisingly, most of the configurations use the Heavy Medium Laser, a recent development by Kariban-Victoria after reverse engineering samples from Clan Sea Fox. While the weapon's increased heat and interference with electronics is considered a flaw, research continues to improve the weapon, the current models remaining a stopgap until that time.
Configuration A takes the role of Medium Fire Support, with its pair of LRM-10 missiles systems with their Artemis IV fire control. The addition of an LB 10-X Autocannon is to further this role, often placing it in the anti-aircraft or conventional vehicle role as well. Its Heavy Medium Laser is meant to provide it with a powerful close range weapon, though with its speed it is meant to maintain a distance from enemy forces.
Configuration B uses the Rotary AC 5 in combination with an MML-9 missile system to provide medium ranged fire support. It too includes a single Heavy Medium Laser, but it is far more likely to use it in conjunction with its autocannon and differing missile loads.
Configuration C is built to be a long ranged sniper, with its targeting computer assisted Gauss Rifle. It also provides electronic support with the expensive and advanced Angel ECM unit installed in its left torso. With two Heavy Medium Lasers, which with the advanced computer compensating for its electronic disturbance, it can ward attackers off while trying to gain additional distance to bring its Gauss Rifle back into play. With three tons of ammunition, it playtime is long indeed.
The last official configuration, D, hearkens back to the Clan Nova, or Blackhawk, OmniMechs primary configuration. With a targeting computer to compensate, a total of six Heavy Medium Lasers make it a devastating close ranged fighter. To compensate for the high heat threshold, six additional double heat sinks were installed along with a Radical Heat Sink, a piece of equipment imported for this specific use. To aid in closing to range, a Supercharger was installed as well, bringing its top speed to 129 kph in short bursts.
