Dust Runner Quarters

On the one hand, his quarters here on the 'new' ship didn't really seem to be any different than his quarters had been back on the Dust Runner. It looked to be the same size... a standard starship stateroom.

Once he settled in, though, he realized that it was bigger. Only slightly bigger... not enough to be readily noticeable to the naked eye, but there was a few inches extra elbow room.

There were other subtle differences, too... lighting didn't seem to be as harsh... more diffuse.

It wasn't more luxurious; he certainly couldn't say that. Yet, it felt like it was.

All the rooms had a slightly different decor, too. So maybe that was it. He'd selected the 'lavender' room. The walls had a pale lavender coloring to them.

It wasn't until he laid down that the best feature of all came into play: the star-field ceiling! The ceiling was an elaborate vidscreen. It could be changed to match the rest of the color, or it could be made dark black, or it could show the star-field as if you were looking out a window. The stars moved as the ship moved. How cool was that?

Four hours later Adriannah emerged from her cabin. Pleased that there was more than sufficient space to hold her Clothes, shoes and personal items, infact there was easily enough space to hold eight times what she has. Adriannah headed to the galley for something to eat.

Adriannah floated listlessly across her cabin,  a trail of blood dropplets seeping from a slight cut on her temple, floating along after her.  When the backup gravity generator kicked in, Adriannah dropped unceremoniously to the deck with a slightly muffled thud. She landed partially on her bunk, the rest of her body spilling over it, striking the floor heavily.

While he had a basic understanding of first aid, it was far better to leave it to those medically trained, especially that type of injury. Arc was doing his own head count, though doing a bit more than just noting that they were there. Sometimes a little head trauma could take awhile to manifest.

When Harry's comm sounded, Arc hurried to Adriannah's quarters.

The door was already open and Forge was inside with Adriannah on the floor. A quick sweep with his medical scanner showed that she was just unconscious from a bump on the head.

"She's okay," he told Harry and Forge. "Just a bump. I could rouse her, but it's better if she recovers on her own... as long as she's not immediately needed."

"Help me put her back in her bunk."

With the help of the others, he settles Adriannah into the bed. He then gets a cold wet cloth from the fresher sink and applies it to the bump as a compress.

As far as anyone knows, there's no such thing as Darrian program-0.

Arc had been going over some medical reports, updating the crew's files, the usual paperwork when you hit a new starport.

He sat back from the computer terminal, stretched and then went looking for the crew, only to find that most of them had left the ship in search of FOOD, and, no doubt, drink, too.

He saw that Adriannah hadn't gone with them, though, so he swung by her quarters.

"Yo, Adriannah," he called out through the door as he rapped on it. "Sure you wouldn't like to step out a bit, grab some grub and a drink or two, maybe get into some mischief?"

"It's illegal to be single on Slint. If your spouse dies, you have 24 hours to either marry someone else, usually some other single person in prison, or else leave the planet. It has something to do with the available resources."

"Well, while the others are exploring, the three of us that remained on board can do some brainstorming," Luise says to Adriannah and Gahler.

"How old do you think this facility is? If it turns out to be an alien base, rather than just some really esoteric human culture, any suggestions on where they came from? Do either of you know of any alien races in this neck of the woods? Foreven seems a likely candidate."

"Without knowing their technology limitations, we don't really know how far they may have come to mine this moon. It might help if we knew what they were mining."

"Anyway, amid all the speculation and wild guesses, we should try to figure out a way to get the salvaged equipment onto the ship. Carrying it halfway through the moon seems way too inconvenient and time consuming. Assuming they find an airlock out into the crevasse, is there some way we can put that junk in a cargo net and haul it up to the ship in one fell swoop? We have a cargo crane. The real question may be: do we have enough chain or cable or strapping?"

"Really? You got a ship's boat in your pocket?"

He pauses for a few seconds to let his words sink in before continuing.

"Why didn't we think of that when we were trying to get down the crevasse?!"

"Oh, that's right... because we don't have a ship's boat."

"Unfortunately, I don't have a better idea. In this lesser gravity, the cargo crane should easily haul up a cargo net full of loot. Probably be helpful if it was in containers, though."

"And you're right about the length of cable. This ship wasn't designed or equipped for that kind of operation. Maybe they can find a cable down there, since it was a mining operation. They must have had some need for a crane now and then."

"Then again, they are alien. We think. I can't think of any species that has long thin fingers that could be inserted into those holes that passed for key openings. Of course, they may have just used a tool like Arlo is doing."

"It isn't that I haven't considered it, or that it hasn't been brought up before," Luise replies, "but the question has always been what to get and where to put if we do get it."

"We already got the cargo module fastened to the bottom of the ship, so slinging it underneath is mostly out of the question. Putting it dorsally has its own problems... mainly, access. If we got an auxiliary craft and custom modified it to accept the ship's lift up through the bottom, that would be practical. The alternative would be to relocate the lift off to the port or starboard and it pops up within its own airlock to access the airlock of the auxiliary craft."

"That would make the ship a bit less maneuverable, and we might need to reinforce the landing gear."

"The other alternative was to put it in the cargo hold. Regardless of which one we put it in, it'll reduce our cargo capacity."

"Have you got any suggestions for either what to get or where to store it?"

"If the computer announces the ship will destruct in 10 seconds and you know you can't get far enough away in time, then you have to disarm the self-destruct fast."

"If your ship gets caught in the gravity well of a black hole, you have to figure a way out or be sucked in and squashed to the size of an atom."

Re: Frumious Bandersnatch Quarters

Although the crevasse is over a mile away, it's a simple operation, so Bill has no problem maneuvering the ship back to it. Luise doesn't object, and Gahler lets you do it, though he's standing by just in case.

The crevasse isn't wide enough for the ship to fit down in it in any direction, which is why you'd originally considered climbing down using cargo nets.

Now that you know there's something else there to be seen, not just the window side, you can look around better. Unfortunately, the angle isn't great. There's a rocky overhang on the 'mural side' of the crevasses, so you can't look direction down. Only by placing the ship in the right spot can the external lights and camera aim down at the mural.

And the cameras register the image... apparently a 3D image so that you're looking down on the 'scene' from above.

That would seem to indicate that is is, indeed, a holographic projection.

This is confirmed by the Away Team when they open the next living quarters door and look out the window--the ship's lights shine right through it and wash it out.

Re: Frumious Bandersnatch Quarters

"It's not like a painting that you can just take down off the wall," Luise replies to Roland over the open comms.

"If the hologram is static, then there won't really be a processor... just some controls to adjust brightness and ratio."

"On the other hand, if the image is adjustable, the processor could hold some informative data. We've probably got the technology to do such a thing, just no one has ever wanted to do it."

"I'm guessing the processor and the projector are integrated... even if there are more than one projector. As a unit, it would have value. Piecemeal...  not so much."

The only way to determine that is to physically check it out.

Re: Frumious Bandersnatch Quarters

"And we still don't know if it's a single projector, several little ones or a hundred tiny ones," Arc said.

"That image is 5-stories high and a little over that wide! It isn't that we don't have the technology to do that ourselves, just that no one has had a reason to do anything on that scale. We have other ways of doing it, maybe not better but easier for us."

"Which is why I've been thinking things over as we went. There's a certain feeling of alieness to this place, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was."

"So, here's what I've come up with."

"First of all, these aliens are/were humanoid. I've got two reasons for saying that. First, form follows function. Why don't we have narrow hallways or low ceilings or cramped living quarters? Mostly that's because we don't need them any more. We've become the dominant life form on our world. By developing intelligence, we've been able to bend our environment to our needs, rather than having to scavenge for what we need."

"This hallway is wide enough to let two of us stand side by side... or pass each other going in different directions. That holds true for the aliens. This is confirmed by the width of the doorways. No need to be that wide if they were small burrowing creatures. No need for them to be so high... same reason."

"The second reason is practicality. Why build a bunch of boxes all stuck together? Mainly, I think that's because it's easier to make a flat sheet of metal or plastic or whatever these walls are than it is to make them curved or rippled or whatever."

"It looks like they either found a large cave or overhang in this area and simply built it out. Remember, too, that technological development is almost never straight across the board. They may not have had the ability to spray gunnite or equivalent over a mesh framework. For that matter, maybe there was a reason they couldn't set up such a framework. After all, they'd be working in a low gravity vacuum."

"Based on the furniture, their anatomy might be a little different, but I'm guessing they walk upright, have two legs and two arms, and are about the same height as we are. The labs tell us that. We don't have to reach up to the tables or bend down to use them."

"Next reason is style or ascetics. There's a reason we like symmetry. We have two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, two arms, two legs, two lungs, two kidneys, etc. Things that are symmetrical to us are pleasing. It takes special... ummm, education to appreciate asymmetrical items."

"When we first observed those outside windows, we had no idea if each window represented a separate compartment or they were all in the same big room. Now that we're inside, we know the answer to that. But! I point out that those windows are not stacked one above the other. They are staggered. That might be because they are trying to disguise the appearance from the outside."

"Now, take a look at the mural again. It's all forests and trees and bushes and flowers. Doesn't it seem like that would be a reminder of home? But why no mountain, why no hills and plains, no rivers and lakes? It makes me think these aliens might have been bird people. They once lived in those trees but they've lost the power of flight."

"That leaves mental make-up. The way these rooms have been left suggests they are a meticulous species. Absolutely nothing of a personal nature has been left behind. No small knickknacks, nothing to indicate that anyone had actually lived in these quarters."

"And that just doesn't make any sense, since clearly the labs had been used. While I could say that they wanted separation between home and work, I just don't see someone from a lower level coming up here to work in these labs."

"The hidden storage room doors are another indicator. It wasn't done for secrecy... it was done for aesthetics. They didn't want the 'closet' intruding into  their work space."

"So, let's try to keep a more open mind. Don't make humanocentric assumptions about what we'll find."

Alternately sending a small hover drone to retrieve a projector should provide an easier retrieval method.

"There's no atmosphere, so it'd have to be a grav drone," Gahler says as he continues to keep an eye on the sensors. "I don't think we have any of those."

"Besides, the projectors might not be outside. They may be inside on a lower level and operate through a window. It also depends on how big the projector is. It might even be embedded in the wall and require significant excavation to get it out."

"We still have too many questions and insufficient answers."
