Dust Runner Galley

Luise is the first one to arrive in the galley after Gahler's announcement. There were a lot of people on the ship right now; it was going to get crowded.

Re: Dust Runner Galley

Arc was pretty useless around the ship, so when Gahler called for a meeting in the galley, it was a no-brainer to head there right away. As it was, he still wasn't first. He guessed the others had simply been closer.

He'd also noticed that they'd made the transition to jump space, meaning they'd gotten out of the system successfully. There was still no guarantee that they wouldn't be jumping into the fire. He supposed that was what the meeting was about.

"So we've jumped," he commented. "Is there any way for the Swordies to know where we went?"

He'd never paid much attention to the workings of interstellar travel as it had always been someone else's responsibility.

Along with Kraig and Roland, Randy files into the room, too.

Shortly afterward, Mara, Kara, and Jyro file in. The room is officially crowded now.

They are followed by Vermeer and Nate.

That puts 17 people in the galley... standing room only!

OOC:Next trick question(s)...

Did the ship record any onworld comms, local news networks...etc...something to give a better idea of what's going on in the "big picture"...and Imperial ships, with broadcasts... I realize this is all a bit slow on the 8 ball thinking, but, I've sat by and watched how our "nominal leaders" dealt with things...this isn't criticism, just something to think about...

Since the Swordies made mistakes, we're not the only clever ones...and opposition wasn't wiped out immediately, there would have been transmissions, code packets...something...

Before replying to Gahler..what does he find? (Note: not sure of modifiers?)

Kraig looked up from his hand comp as he read about the system.  "The main world looks like it was fragged with asteroids during the Ancients War.  It's habitable but covered with huge craters from the strikes.  The system is old and the planet is metal poor and the atmosphere is tainted.  Locals live on what are called Mesas and get around in hand powered dirigibles.  The Navy and Scouts have the planet interdicted to protect the natives from interference.  There is a gas giant so we could refuel there if we could scoop.  Otherwise we might plead for help from the Navy or Scouts since we are fleeing the Swordies."

Arc was listening to the others discuss where they were going with only one ear. He didn't know enough about the local space to have a clue himself. But it did strike him as odd. He'd had similiar discussions with fellow hunters about where they were going to hunt, but the first issue had always been 'what were they looking for?'

Here, they seemed to have skipped over that. They made it sound like they were a rabbit in blind panic mode; it never knew where it was going, it just want to get there in a hurry.

"This all sounds interesting," he suggested, "but shouldn't we decide what we're going to do before we decide where we're going to do it?"

"Most of us have a share of the ship now, thanks to the Baroness, but what are we going to do with it? Are we going to become traders? Explorers? Knockabouts?"

"Steve, how much of your other ship did you own? What do you think the chances are of getting it back any time soon? Will it be commandeered? Will it be looted?"

"I guess what I'm really wondering... are we in this bucket for the short term... or the long haul?"

Still in coldsleep are: Jyro, Marashi, Nathaniel, Randy, Shamus, Shunu, Beth, Stez, and Vermeer. That leaves only one free coldsleep chamber.

Kraig filled Luise and Arc on on what they had found before they started discussing their next steps.  "We need to refuel ASAP.  It will be unrefined so we'll want to take extra care in our Jump calculations and engine tuning.  I say we head to Ghandi.  There is a naval base so we can likely find transport for our supernumaries.  A lot of us might get reactivated and pulled into the service.  The ship is ours but we'll have to hope for dismountable tanks of fuel bladders or a ride on a Jump tug to get back to Imperial lines.  Heading rimward through Sonthert and D'Ganzio requires heading along the Swordie frontier for Jump 2 or a ride out of D'Ganzio on a high Jump ship or tug.  I think D'Ganzio is more likely than Ghandi to be under Swordie attack."

"Third, you picked up some non-paying guests on Sky Rig. There were people in the medical bay that were in life-support chambers. We brought them aboard because it looked like the refueling station might get destroyed in the storm."

"They were put in the life-support chambers because the medic thought they had contracted some sort of plague and he couldn't find a cure. As long as they are in the pods, they... and we... are safe."

"It looked like one of them was starting to revive, but I put him back under, since we weren't set up for any quarantine. Those life-support pods aren't meant for long-term use. Re: Dust Runner Galley

Luise had been listening in silence. She knew that her crew would do the right thing. She only had to wait till they had decided on what the right thing was. As a child, her father had given her The Little Prince to read and she had found the king's advice very useful:

Accepted authority rests first of all on reason. If you ordered your people to go and throw themselves into the sea, they would rise up in revolution. I have the right to require obedience because my orders are reasonable.

Personally, she hoped to get rid of the cold ones, but that was probably because she had been babysitting them.

Finally, she spoke, her voice quiet and clear:

"Gentlemen, this is all well. Roland, Graig has mentioned Ghandi, is that what you are suggesting, as well? Ignatius, the only one Parsec Jump from here is Sonthert, D-class airport, zoned yellow. Gahler, if we're staying away from naval bases, which system would you choose?

All things equal, I'd prefer a system with a gas giant, although I am aware that desperate times require desperate measures - like buying fuel".

A touch of humor - never amiss when leading people.

"We could head for Calit, or Ficat, or Tavonni. Even Arba, for that matter. It all depends on where we want to go after that."

"Calit and Ficat are unimportant targets, off the beaten path. Swordies shouldn't have any interest in them."

"Ghandi and D'Ganzo are trade routes and prime targets. If we jump to either of them, we could be in the thick of a space battle."

"Arba is likely to be a staging area for the Swordies. I'm not feeling particularly foolhardy today, so I'd rather not test my luck."

"Calit moves us away from the war, unless the Swordies have made a thrust as far as Denotam. Otherwise, it gives us the option of heading coreward... go to Phlume or Rangent from there."

Kraig shook his head.  "If the Swordies attacked Lanth you have to figure that the Zhos are across the border in strength.  The dogs of the Sword Worlds would not dare to attack without their masters."  He took a deep breath, obviously angered by the sudden attack.  "If we go to Calit we could find ourselves in a system under attack or under siege by the Zho.  I say we use our fuel and range to make a series of Jumps to Quopist.  It has a gas giant and is away from the front.  It's unlikely that any foe have made it there.  We can drop off our passengers there or continue on with them."

Re: Dust Runner Galley

Arc scanned through the computer as all these worlds were mentioned. He wasn't familiar with any of them. Hell, he hadn't even heard of most of them!

"Quopist looks to be rather dangerous all on its own," he chimed in. "Small world, thin atmosphere, little water, poor world. Tech is at a premium... expensive. Law level is high, but not extreme. Run by a Knight."

As he says that, he glances at Luise.

"It sounds like he runs a strict world. Probably has to... to keep it running. We start tossing around data about the Ancients, he's going to see credit signs. The Baroness here may be all that we have to keep him in check."

"So what do you think, Captain? Can you handle this Knight? He's going to see us as an Opportunity. If he's desperate, he might not like you standing in his way."

He gave her a moment to think about this before adding, "It's your call, Captain."

Luise weighs the options:
"Calit is a jump towards the edge of human space, Quopist is zoned yellow and although I believe I could talk my way past the local potentate it is a risk - but the general direction is towards the Imperium. And then there is Ghandi..."

"I think it is time we take a vote on this. Ghandi and then the scout base at Dinomn is my personal preference, but this matter is too mportant to disregard your preferences. So, gentlemen?"

"Welllll... it's not the way I'd go, but you are right, IM, about keeping it from getting across the border," Arc chimes in. "If the Swordies or the Zhodani learn about that translation device, they'd be here in a flash with full force!"

"As it is, I doubt if the Scouts will believe us. Either way, they'll file it away in a secure  folder and send it on down the pipeline... or would that be up the pipeline? ...to some higher authority. It's not like anyone's going to be able to make instant use of the data to stop the war."

"So, Ghandi it is. You've already got a majority vote. It doesn't look like anyone else seriously objects."

He glances at Gahler, Steve and Hans.

"I never said I objected to Ghandi as a destination," Steve says with a glare at Arc. "I was just pointing out a likely problem."

"We still don't know how extensive this 'war' is... or even what it's purpose is. And we only think the Zho are involved. We haven't seen any signs of them and don't have any proof."

"Okay, so Ghandi it is. But I reserve the right to say 'I told you so' if the excrement hits the rotary air oscillator when we get there!"

That wasn't what he would have normally said... among the crew, but he acknowledged that there was a woman/lady/baroness present, even if he didn't like her.

He had no opinion one way or another, as he had little knowledge of the area. But he also had no reason to go against the others.

He actually understood Arc's skewed perception of not considering himself as a significant vote. He'd said there was already a majority, but there hadn't been until he voted for going to Ghandi.

"I suppose it's as good a destination as any in these uncertain times," he opined. "I'm guessing Ghandi has a gas giant in the system, so maybe we should jump as close to one of them as possible, scan the system, and then head inward if it's safe."

'That figures' Adriannah thought; her search being as helpful as polishing the equipment. Especially since she'd spent the last eight hours doing so and learnt nothing, despite the numerous questions she'd asked. Giving a nod Adriannah decided she wasn't about to repeat the process, and Roland could polish away at his engines to his hearts content.

Re: Dust Runner Galley

Wax on, wax off...

On the bright side, Adriannah is now a kick-ass karate expert...

There wasn't a whole lot Roland could tell her that didn't involve tearing the engines apart and rebuilding them... which was not recommended while in space, J- or N-.

He managed to explain the basic concepts to her, but did mention a lot of things that he didn't explain, like a feedback loop on the oscillator.

In the end, Adriannah realized that Roland didn't know that much about the Darrian systems other than the basics. If he had to repair the engines without a manual, for instance, it'd probably take him 10 times as long as he worked out what unfamiliar parts did.

Adrianna finished her coffee, cleaned up the utensils then headed back to her cabin. This certainly wasn't what she'd expected; despite the profit on the cargo and successful acquisitions she assessed the crews persona to be reclusive, boardering on excessive.
