Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
You have no problem making your way back to the 'bridge' of the ship. Once there, you place the hexagonal disk into the indentation in the back wall, and once again undergo 'translation' to another location.

You are now standing out in the open on a planetary surface. In front of you is an obelisk with the disk in it. You can see that you are standing on some sort of stone platform. It is hexagonal, about 2 meters high, with three sets of stairs leading off of it down to the ground.

The ground is a purplish-green grass, part of a rolling plain all around you. Off in the distance you can see hills that give way to a range of low forested mountains.

There is a breathable atmosphere, with a faint hint of flowery scent. The light is not very bright, and you can see that the sun is a very small circle in the sky.

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
Kraig will take the disk and step away from the obelisk just a bit.  He'll take pictures as well.  "With the dim light I'd guess the plant color is shifted to something more optimal than a brighter green." He stepped cautiously down to the last step and kneels to examine the grass without stepping off of the platform.

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
At the first movement, a beam of light shines out from near the top of the obelisk and washes over everyone before it vanishes a few seconds later.

Just as Kraig steps onto the bottom step, a small structure seems to grow out of the grass... as it turns into a multi-wheeled conveyance, you realize that it rose up out of the ground rather than having grown.

The grass appears to be real organic grass.

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
IM stands on the platform looking around "Now where are we?" He starts flipping through the database on his handheld when the flash of light distracts him. "You know if we weren't in the middle of all this I'd be making snide remarks about the cheesy trivid."

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
Kraig blinks and peers up at the source of the light.  He then turns back to the grass as the object rises up out of the ground.  Kraig stepped over to examine the conveyance.  "Now what the hell is this?  It seems we're being prepared for a trip."

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
"Perhaps," Hans responds to Kraig's suggestion.

"I'm thinking rather that we were scanned so the machines here would know what species we were and create or produce a vehicle suitable for us."

"There's probably no reason we can't walk... but I don't see anything in sight that seems like a reasonable destination. I think our vehicle is the equivalent of a taxi."

"The question is: do we want to continue exploring this world? I'm not that good at astronomy, but based on the size of the solar disk, might we not be on the phantom Sixth Planet?"

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
Kraig considers Hans' suggestion.  "I'd agree that there is no real destination in sight so we'd have to take the conveyance if we want to go anywhere.  That assumes that it moves off automatically"  He looks about; "The sixth planet isn't a bad guess Hans." Addressing himself to the others he call out.  "I'd say we pass on the vehicle and continue cycling through the options on the Gate."

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
You've gone through all six sides of the crystal disk/key. If you want to try the metal disks, it would be smarter to do so from the main control room.

The marks that Kraig put on the disk are still there.

The side you designated as '1' was the locker room.
#2 (clockwise around the disk) was the power station.
#3 was the last place you were... 6th planet, open field.
#4 was the ship (after rotating it back counter-clockwise).
#5 was the garden with the underground chamber.
#6 was the main control room.

So now you are back in the main control room again.

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
The two metal disks didn't appear to be iron... not heavy enough by far, but was some light material, probably a titanium alloy.

They were the exact same size and design as the crystal disk, only made of metal. Both top and bottom were flat and smooth, and the edge was beveled in only one direction. It appeared as if the smaller diameter was the top. You never tried inserting the crystal disk in any other way, although that may have been because the indentations were only about half the thickness of the disk, and therefore putting it in 'upside down' wouldn't have been a tight fit.

When they return to the control room Kraig examines the metal disks and turns to the others.  "Should we try the metal disks as well?  There must be a whole network of these portals.  Who knows what we could find.  Or should we quit while we are ahead?"

IM "I agree with Gahler. We are gambling that one of the locations won't drop us into deep vacuum. I think we need to gather our information and sample and turn it over to an exploration team with the gear. We need to check in and see what's happening with our shipmates."

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
"I have no idea whether the ancients had the same sort of value system that we do," Hans offers, "but I would think that the metal disks are less... valuable? Important? ...than the crystal one."

"On the other hand, the metal might be incredibly valuable while the crystal is just ordinary dross... grown by the millions in chemical baths."

"But, without further evidence to suggest one or the other, I'd opt for the crystal to be more valuable. Therefore, it should be a master key, relegating the metal disks to mere workers. At least, that's the way I'd have done it."

"What that should mean is that the metal ones will either take us to different locations altogether or to a specific place. Probably just one of the places we visited."

"On the other other hand, I could just be blowing smoke out of my arse."

"So, if we're not going to tamper with anything, then I'm with the rest of you. Time to get back to the ship. Once there, we can see what's been happening while we were gone, and then maybe reassess our options."

"It's not like this place is going anywhere soon. If it's been here for a thousand years, another month or two or even a year shouldn't make any difference."

"The only question now is: do we take the disks with us?"

Kraig listened to the others and nodded.  "Let's go then.  We'd best not push our luck.  I say we leave the disks back in the first room where they can be found again if and when we return."

"Do you mean the first room when we entered this mess?" Hans asks. "Cause they could easily be found there. Here in the control room where we found them would be a lot harder for others to find. It was a very convoluted path we took to get here."

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
So the hex-disks are put back on the shelf where they were found, and the group begins to thread their way back to the opening where the air raft is, hopefully, still waiting.

Between IM's recordings and Hans's memory (however shaky it might be), it's no problem retracing their steps. Someone had even marked the walls when there was a choice of direction, and those marks are still there.

On the way back, you spot three more of the hexagonal indentations. One you'd spotted on the way in, but had no idea that it was anything other than decoration.

So the intrepid party of Steve, Kraig, Gahler, IM, Hans and Roland made it back to the air raft in considerably less time than going in. This time, they knew where they were going.

The air raft was still there, as was Arc.

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
"Well, it's about time!" Arc greets the group as they reappear out of the whole they climbed into hours ago.

"Hey! Wait! Where are the dancing alien girls?"

"I hope you brought me something back anyway. I was down to my last granola bar. Another hour, I'd have headed back to the ship to resupply."

"Luise is having a fit! She's even more paranoid than you guys... worried about the patrol coming back and catching us on the planet. I tried to calm her down... told her wars don't start and end that quickly. Definitely not on the scale we've seen. Even if the landings on Lanth were just some sort of gambit in interstellar politics, it would take the diplomats at least a month to work out the withdrawal terms."

"So, still no sign of anyone."

OOC: Gahler had recorded stuff too. Noted in initial posts.
IC: "We are back and safe. Got some interesting stuff to show you back on ship. Lets go." Gahler replied to Arc.

Re: Exploring the Ancient Site
OOC: I think a lot of us took photos and such; Kraig did as well.

Kraig noted the locations of the other depressions for later use and then followed the others back to the air raft.  "I'm glad to see you Arc.  No dancing girls but we found their control station and a teleportal system.  It'll be worth selling after the War.  Now we need to figure a way out of the system and to safety."
