Skills Study and Training Program

This is a place to record and keep track of any training you are doing.

Unless and until someone comes up with a better system, I'm going with the following:

You can study or train for two skills at a time, provided one is physically-oriented, and one is mentally oriented. It takes one week of study and training per skill rank you are training for to progress to that next rank. Treat Rank-0 as Rank-1, but you still have to train to go from Rank-0 to Rank-1.

This is assuming you are doing your training during downtime, whether that is during jump transits or taking a vacation on a planet. Otherwise, it takes two weeks of training to equal one week of downtime training.

In other words, you aren't 'busy' 24 hours a day. Without going into details about how and when you train (study while sitting in the loo taking care of your other business), you can always manage to fit in a few minutes here and there to study, exercise, and do related training (practice field stripping a gun, isometrics, etc.).

Social Standing is the one trait you cannot improve by this method.

Likewise, Jack-of-All-Trades cannot be improved by training; it can only be improved during initial character generation.

A better astrogation skill would be helpful as well as boosting strength

GM's notes: so 2 weeks for Astrogation-2, and 7 weeks for Strength-7.

Steve needs to improve his Endurance, and feels he'd be most useful on Recon, so studying that.

GM's notes: so 2 weeks for Recon-2 and 6 weeks for Endurance-6.

Hey, Kraig... you've got a partner in the Strength training.

Arc will also study Science/Biology. He can't quite see anything else that he'd be good at, not without stepping on everyone's toes. Just how many pilots DO we need?

GM's notes: so 1 week to go to Science/Biology-1, and 6 weeks for Strength-6.

StarMaster:

I do not quite follow why not just stick to the suggestion in MGT RAW.
With the ruling in place it's incredibly easy to acquire new skills.
Compare with your career terms.
If you rolled really lucky you get perhaps one skill per year (1 for Service, 1 for Advancement, 1 based on Events, 1 based on Mustering Out).

MGT RAW states (and actually fumbles the example ^^):
([current skill rank] + [new skill rank]) weeks

Also, it states that Jack Of All Trades cannot be learned

Further, there's the delicate matter of what is actually downtime.
It's not quite as if there is absolutely nothing to do during a jump, certainly not for a Steward who needs to pamper the passengers.
So, I would rather suggest to count a jump week as half a week of possible Training.

Just my 50 pence ^^

Physical Training
Strength 3->4
4 weeks (or 7 weeks per my suggestion)

Intellectual Studies
Streetwise 2->3
3 weeks (or 5 weeks per my suggestion)
