As it turned out, the Baron had all of his belongings already in storage in cargo containers in anticipation of departing Regina soon. He and his family had been staying at the Grand Carlton hotel.

The cargo containers are loaded into the ship quickly and the Baron and family show up three hours before launch.

The ship lifts off on schedule.

Harry helped secure the baron's belongings in the hold of the FB. Between regular cargo and his stuff, they were pretty full. Harry took great care and pride knowing NOTHING would shift in the hold, all was secure. He saw to that.

The Frumious Bandersnatch was ready to launch now, all was secure and everything tested and diagnosed. No problems being found by Harry in what he took care of. He waited for the countdown and the launch command.

He checked to see if there was anything Joe, Ex or Oen or any of the other crew needed before launch, and took care to check with Luise, he wanted it to be a perfect first flight and thought maybe he should check on training a bit to help the steward in a pinch in the near future.

Everybody was aboard by the scheduled liftoff time. Nothing changed during the wait time--no news on additional military issues, no change in any of the trade routes, no change in the status of the ship or the baron.

Although the ship's instrumentation was very exacting, there was always the possibility of minor glitches, so the ship went out to 101 planetary diameters as a precaution before making the transition to Jump-space.

N-space trip and transition went off without a hitch.

This is probably the first time all of the crew gets to see the Baron and his entourage: wife, 5 kids (including 2 rugrats), sister, butler, amanuensis, man-servant, 2 ladies in waiting, nanny, and Woofie the dog.

Arc thought it was a presumptuous of him to require the Baron and his family to get a medical exam, so he relied on the medical records that were already on file. Plus, he did his best to observe the Baron and his family as discretely as possible... in lieu of a personal exam. Not that he expected to see anything obvious... if there were any obvious problems, someone would have said something by now. It was the unseen ones that tended to concern him.

The Baron had brought a lot of people. Arc hadn't quite expected that, but, in retrospect, it made sense of course.

Ex made himself useful wherever he could.

Often this was simply entertaining the barons young children, who called him "Fuzzy Man" and reminded him of his own cub, and doing odd jobs around the ship.

Sometimes it meant backing up Arc in the MedBay where he proved to be well qualified.

Sometimes it was cleaning checking and servicing weapons, armor, and vacc suits in the armory and ships locker. It was at this job that he showed himself to be a wizard.

Between those jobs he found time to train in a skill that he did not feel he was quite skilled enough in.

After a week in jump space, Harry was ready for Roup and the refuel for Feri. Harry checked the astrogation formula for the jump to Feri.

It would be a while, as long as a day or two before the actual jump, time to start calculations.

Although Roup is only an Amber Zone, Luise decides to refuel at one of the gas giants. It has a High Port, but it's not very big. It's mainly the laws on Roup that make it a Amber Zone... that, and the fact that it's a major water world. If you like prairies and forests and mountains, you would probably freak out on Roup. The laws were passed to protect polluting the waters. Some say they are too harsh and strict, and you can get arrested just looking at the ocean wrong.

While the fuel at the High Port is bound to be pure, it'll also cost a lot more.

Skimming the gas giant might be the cheaper option since there was no freight or passengers going to Roup.

As you approach the nearest gas giant, the ship picks up a transponder code, which the computer quickly identifies as a refueling station in orbit around the planet. Apparently, this is because there's a Scout base on the planet, and as long as the system is classified as an Amber Zone, it's marginally profitable.

Harry calculated the jump to Feri when the fuel was finished refining for the drives and the ship maneuvered to the jump coordinates. The flight had so far been uneventful, the only sounds coming from Ex playing with the children like a living toy for them. simply adorable.

The trip so far has been uneventful. The Baron's kids are reasonably well behaved, and the nanny keeps them in place.

As Luise is aware, the Baron expects a formal dinner every day, alternately hosted by the Baron and the Captain (a Baron in her own right).

Luise could insist on inviting everyone of the crew to dinner, but there really isn't room, so, instead, she invites one crewman per day to dinner to meet the Baron and his family.

While the Baron is aware that his title is inherited, he doesn't think that makes him better than those without a title, but he has a position to maintain.

At Roup, the ship refuels at the orbital refueling station. They have skilled professionals there to do the work so there is nothing that the crew needs to get involved in, other than to just monitor the progress.

In short order, the ship is refueled, credits are transferred, and the ship departs.

Harry needs to make an Astrogation roll for the jump to Feri. This includes the departure vector from the gas giant.

The jump from Roup to Feri goes without a hitch. Things can happen during jumps, though not usually while in jump, but those sorts of events are few and far between.

The route from Regina to Roup to Feri is an X-boat route, making it a standard space lane, so the jump destination is calculated to 100.01 diameters from Feri. This is just a precaution for any space traffic in the area or any space debris.

Harry's calculation is spot on and the Frumious Bandersnatch exits jump space at exactly the 100.01 diameters out from Feri. The ship is 842,784km out. There's about a 3 second time lag with communication with the planet, but Feri's sensor grid is far enough out that it only takes a second for it to register the ship's presence and send the typical identification request.

Everything seems to be in order. The landing request has already been entered into the computer/transponder so unless there's a change, it's automatically transmitted to the planet.

Since the Baron is moving to Feri, the request for a landing is planetside, and it is granted.

Harry would need to make a Broker roll... one for each of the categories he's interested in:

Mail (depends on where the ship goes next)
Passengers (may determine where the ship goes next)
Freight (hauling it for someone else; may also determine where the ship goes next)
Cargo (speculative cargo; you buy it outright and hope to sell for a profit)

Expenses for the ship are 500Cr for a week's berthing and 86,400Cr for fuel.

Arc, Exler, Joe and Oen-kek find themselves at a Spacer's bar called Holy Klono's Bells. Joe can probably get any information on planetary rules and regulations from the spacers in there as well as check the internet for it.

Steve joins you a few minutes later.

There are five possible destinations that passengers could want to go to that the Frumious Bandersnatch: Uakye, Efate, Boughene, Pixie and Enope. There are other worlds within reach, but they aren't particularly desirable destinations.

PASSENGERS

There's an archaeological group of 6 wanting to go to Enope (Jump-2). Interested only in Middle Passage, so that would be 54,000Cr.

There are 5 passengers looking for passage to Efate (Jump-3), middle passage, for 75,000Cr.

There are 8 passengers going to Boughene (Jump-2), middle passage, for 72,000Cr.

And there are 2 passengers wanting to go to Pixie (Jump-3), high passage, for 40,000Cr.

MAIL

There's almost always mail going to significant planets; Efate, Boughene and Pixie all fall into that category. Although the ship doesn't have a history yet, the crew does have a positive reputation, so the ship will be trusted to handle mail.

6 containers for Efate for 150,000Cr.
3 containers for Boughene for 75,000Cr.
4 containers for Pixie for 100,000Cr.

FREIGHT

There are 29 major freight lots.
1,2,5 lots going to Efate.
3,5,5 lots going to Boughene.
3,2,3 lots going to Pixie.

There are 39 incidental freight lots.
5,6,1,5 lots going to Efate.
2,6,5,6 lots going to Boughene
1,2 lots going to Pixie.

SPECULATIVE CARGO

Harry finds a supplier in FTI (Feri Trans Industrials).

Basic Electronics, 70 tons @ 20,000Cr per ton.
Basic Machine Parts, 90 tons @ 10,000Cr per ton.
Basic Manufactured Goods, 40 tons @ 20,000Cr per ton.
Basic Raw Materials, 120 tons @ 5,000Cr per ton.
Basic Vehicles, 160 tons @ 500Cr per ton.
Basic Ore, 180 tons @ 1,000Cr per ton.

Robots, 25 tons @ 400,000Cr per ton.
Petrochemicals, 60 tons @ 10,000Cr per ton.
Uncommon Raw Materials, 30 tons @ 20,000Cr per ton.
Advanced Vehicles, 20 tons @ 180,000Cr per ton.

Harry pays for the cargo and sets up delivery to the ship. He then heads to the bar again and orders a round of drinks. "We're going to Efate next. Ready to fly again soon? We'll have passengers too!"

Ex smiled wistfully showing his own inch long fangs.

"But it's the Aileih, The Claw of Love, that put's off most Human and Vargr from rolling about with Aslan females. It is analagous to the human female Clitoris but it is usually slightly larger than a human male's penis."

"Ironically human and vargr females seem quite fond of it. I have been put out of the bed chamber when my own, equipment was felt to be too large only to be replaced by one of my own wives! Can you believe it! Ha Ha Ha Ha!"

Ex roared with laughter.

Arc listened to the conversation around him. He'd covered a bunch of the material in his medical training, but the books were always so dry. It was also good to get a first-hand perspective.

"Is the cargo loaded yet, Harry?" he asked.

"Has the ship been refueled yet?"

"Did Luise give a lift-off time yet? I suppose we'll get beeped when it's time to report back to the ship."

"Although, now that I think of it, I don't think she's ever used the recall alert. One beep is a general recall, generally meaning lift-off in about 3 hours. Two beeps are fast recall, lift-off in 30 minutes. Three beeps... well, if you aren't already on the ship, it probably left without you."

"In the case of one beep, you're expected to reply with a single beep acknowledging receipt and compliance. If you don't reply, she won't leave unless you are on board or she knows that you aren't coming... quit, dead, arrested, etc. She'll send crew out to find you, otherwise."

He felt like an Old Timer explaining the information to the newcomers. They probably already knew it, but sometimes, in the midst of Crazy, minor details like that tended to get overlooked.

Ex was up early the next morning. He went through a ridiculously difficult morning workout as soon as he rolled out of bed, taking time only to put on shorts.

He then wrote and sent off a long communication to his mates and hoped that it would arrive in a timely manner. As he sometimes did he regretted that parental culture with his race wasn't more like humans. He would very much have liked to spend more time with his son.

Around local dawn, or when the lights came on in the starport, he had set up his autochef in the galley and had his Domestic Servant robot bringing trays of food to everyone on board. The autochef was rated at Gourmet level but he set it to produce standard human "country breakfast".

Harry tried to stay out of Ex'es way when he did his personal time with his family and his Kata's. He went into the galley and had coffee then went down to load the ship and stow all of the cargo securely. It would take most of the day he was sure. Luise was getting scarcer and scarcer, he didn't know how long this would all last. The crew numbers seemed to be thinning too, IM had left.

Passengers haven't boarded yet. There's no reason for them to board a ship that may not depart for a week or more. Plus, there are always emergencies that crop up. And the ship's captain may decide to change destinations at the last minute. It's not like a starliner than has a standard run.

Cargo is loaded, passengers have all been vetted, check in and boarded, so unless there is any last minute thing someone wants to do, the ship is ready for departure.

Luise gets the standard departure from Air/Space Control: lift-off in 15 minutes.

Next stop (hopefully): Efate.

Arc didn't really have any function when it came to ship operations. He assisted with Steward as needed, but just kind of kept out of everyone else's way.

He had no last minute requests. There wasn't anything he couldn't do without for a week until they reached Efate.

So, he just settled in for the lift-off and transit to jump.
