Destination: Efate

Although there was a minor skirmish in the outer reaches of the Efate system, it was a bit far removed from the Fifth Frontier War.

No one really understood what the point of the Zhodani incursion was since the Zhodani force had no chance against the Imperial Navy starforce that was stationed there. It was suggested that it was some sort of faint, but nothing else came of it.

Now that the war is over, things are back to normal on Efate.

The Frumious Bandersnatch makes the week-long trip without incident. The passengers are well-behaved and, in fact, a good time was had by all.

The passengers thank Luise for the passage and promise to put in a good word with TAS.

Because Efate is a significant industrial world, it has both a highport and a downport.

When you come out of jump, it takes only three seconds for the sensor buoys to pick up the ship's presence and transmit the standard hail. Since you have registered passengers whose state destination is Efate, you are automatically granted clearance to land at the downport and are given a vector (time, course and speed).

Not surprisingly, your ship sensors pick up the presence of nearly two dozen other ships in orbit or in transition.

From jump exit, it takes you about 6 hours to reach the atmosphere, and another 20 minutes to land at the designated bay at the starport.

Upon landing, Harry unbuckled himself and stretched from the six hour ride in 'G' space. Next he helped passengers with their luggage to clear customs. "Nice quiet trip, I wish they were all like that."

Then it it was time for the Downport cargo-master. Find buyer for all of their cargo, deliver the mail and such.

Before anyone leaves the ship, Luise calls everyone together and has a few words to say.

"Just wanted to give everyone a few things to think about," she says.

"The war is over, but, even so, we had decided to steer clear of the 'war zone'. So, it gets down to where do we want to go next."

"None of us have any vested interest in this region, so it's a wide open book for us. Look around, talk to people, check things out. Do we want to stick with going where the cargo and passenger winds take us, or do we want to come up with a more... focused plan."

"I have to admit, aimless wandering doesn't seem to be my style. I might be able to get used to it, but I'd still like a more specific purpose."

"To that end, see what you can drum up for... well, for lack of a better term... Adventure. Constant trading is fine as far as it goes, but it's starting to feel like... WORK."

"And last but by no means least... try to have some fun while we're here! That's an order!"

During the J-space journey, Arc had plenty of extra time to assess the ship's stores and complete an inventory, so, by the time they landed, he knew what the ship could use if not outright needed.

As expected, the starport at Efate had a Galaxy Outfitters store that you could order from online and have it delivered to... well, wherever, but, in this case, it was to the starship.

He spent about an hour placing the order and then headed out.

Staying inside a flying tin can really wasn't that bad, and if it had been on the ground, he probably could have stayed inside definitely. It was the 'not being able to leave' that generally constituted 'cabin fever'. So, like everyone else, he was eager to leave the ship and go have fun.

Just what was fun on Efate?

Guess he'd find out. Maybe.

Starports were never that busy in terms of ships landing and such--a real busy port could see 10 or 12 ships a day, but the number of people that worked at a starport to service those ships and their crews... now THAT is what made a starport bustle.

That, in turn, meant a lot of bars. Arc, as he was leaving the ship, decided he'd make a tour of all of them at the starport! That should be FUN. Or not.

He checked his comm unit and requested a list of starport bars, pubs and taverns. The online search engine merely looked for places that served alcohol. That was 27! Plus another dozen on the periphery.

The hard was decided where to start. He finally decided to start with the closest... something called Mos Eisley Barre & Grille, a name apparently derived from some old science fiction vid.

Apparently Arc had the same idea!

Yo! Arc! Wait up! Going to do another tour of the starport bars?" he finally asked when he caught up to Arc.

"Mind if I join you?"

"You know... I once had this idea that I was going to visit every bar in the galaxy! Well, Known Space, anyway, but I didn't rule out unexplored parts of the galaxy. I mean, what kind of bar would a race of intelligent octopi have? And what would they drink?"

"Every wonder what such a race would be like? I mean... would they somehow walk upright? Would they still live under water? If they were intelligent, wouldn't they evolve beyond the watery medium? Even if the ocean was vast or even the whole world, there is still the atmosphere, right? Maybe frozen polar regions. Maybe sargassos. And then there are all those stars up above. The sun. Moons maybe. An intelligent species would want to know about those things."

"Okay, I know what you're thinking, and, no, I haven't started drinking yet. But I'm ready!"

They reached Mos Eisley just then. It was at the start of one of the concourses. Efate was one of those radial starports, with six concourses and stardocks on all sides. It made for a very large extraterritorial area. And security headaches, no doubt.

Slipping into the bar, Steve went up to the bar.

"I'll have a PGGB. What about you, Arc? Got a favorite drink? I always hit a new planet running... starting with a PGGB. Puts hair on your chest... and everywhere else, or so they say. I've always wondered where that expression came from. Do you really think there was some guy that drank a PGGB and really did grow hair on his chest?"

"You'd think growing  hair on your head would be a better selling point."

He looked around the bar to see what it had for entertainment while he waited for his drink.

"Oh, look... a holoband. What strange aliens. Of course, with a holoband, you can have anything you want, even species that don't really exist. That we know of."

"Wait! Is that... an octopus playing flute, trumpet and sax? That's something you don't see every day!"

Arc could handle a PGGB when he was feeling good, but tended to feel bad after drinking one. He wasn't feeling that good today... kind of the blahs rather than feeling sick. So he wanted something that was a pick-me-up.

"I think I'll have... a mudslide," he ordered. Although the alcohol was a depressant, the caffeine from the coffee should do the trick.

"A couple of guys I know... when we were on a hunting trip... we'd sit around the campfire at night and speculate on what kind of alien animals we might find... and how we'd hunt them," he answered Steve while they waited for their drinks.

"We were into the 'man vs. nature' scene, so, no drones, no smart weapons. Sometimes we'd consider using a bow, but no laser sights and no heat-seeking armor-piercing arrows. Where's the fun in that?"

"Yeah, sounds about right on the sapient octopus. Ha-ha! Nice image. Somebody was being creative! If you had 8 appendages, could you actually do 8 different tasks at the same time? Most humans have a hard time walking and chewing gum at the same time."

"But, no, I never had the idea, nor the desire, to tour the galaxy's bars. I'm content with just doing the rounds at a starport."

He'd spent most of the trip reading up on Efate. There were a few points of interest, but mostly he was interested in how the war had affected the planet.

He was looking around the subsector to see where cargo might be needed. Sometimes, you could always check outbound freight to see where stuff was needed, but that didn't always mean they needed (or wanted) what you hauled out to them. That was the point of speculative trade.

They certainly weren't in need of money, not after that deal about the alien ship.

So, it now got back to... what did they want to do? There was only so much trade you could do before it started to get repetitious... old... and just plain boring. Unless you were so inclined to that sort of life. He wasn't. He was still young enough to want adventure.

Of course, they could always go back to what they started out doing... skip-tracing... before the war interrupted them.

He decided to check with the new crew... see what they wanted to do.

He managed to corner Exler and Oen-kek in the mess hall before they left the ship.

"We used to do skip-tracing," he began. "In fact, that's how we got our first ship. The war disrupted that and we changed gears to trying a bit of speculative trade. I don't think that's our thing, though."

"So, what are two interested in doing?"

"Yes! Land is always good!" Exler agrees. "Well, territory... though that really translates as worlds."

"I don't really want to wind up having to run a colony. That's for the women. And once you get one going, you have to start a second one. Expand your territory."

"Those are long term projects, though. I'm not old enough to have the patience for that."

"I agree, though: trade was boring. I like Oen-kek's idea--exploration. To start a colony, we'd have to find some place to colonize anyway."

"Anyone know any place we can go exploring? I thought everything in this area was already explored and colonized. It'd be a long haul to an unexplored area of space."

"Well, it kind of depends on what kind of exploration you are talking about," Arc chimed in.

"There are two types and even those can be broken down into styles and levels. The first type is what the Scouts do--go out into the unknown and explore new worlds. Unfortunately, we're way far away from anywhere that can happen. It'd take us a year maybe to reach the edge of Known Space."

"The second type is detail exploring of an existing world. This covers mountains, valleys, jungles, deserts, wastelands, arctic regions and even underwater."

"By the time Jump drive was invented, we pretty much had developed sensors to the point where we knew where all the stars were and which ones had planets around them. Details about the planets were scarce at best, so that's where the Scouts came in."

"Jump-2 pretty much assured that we could reach any place that was close enough to be practical. The problem with Jump-6, though, was that you could expand beyond your ability to conquer and control the area. If it takes a year to get there and a year to get back, a lot can happen in the two years you've been gone! Another year to get back... and the world might not even be there any more."

"It's why the Imperium keeps collapsing--it expands beyond its ability to control."

"Anyway, those types of worlds aren't around this deep into Known Space. So, that leaves the Type 2 exploration--details. The same kind of expansion issues leave glaring gaps in the exploration of new worlds. Take Earth history: it took 10,000 years of civilization and technological development before the entire planet was fully explored. Even then, there can be pockets that escape notice."

"Now we get down to style. Sensor sweeps, aerial reconnaissance, fly-bys, or feet on the ground? Mostly, it'll depend on what we are looking for. Feet on the ground also covers all-terrain vehicles. Sensor sweeps are primarily orbital."

"I've been checking the star maps for the local subsector. Efate isn't a good place for that sort of endeavor. There are only two planets within our reach that we might consider exploring. Alell is an Amber Zone. Somewhat of an urbanized paradise, lots of resorts, ruled by a king and complex bureaucracy... it has an extreme law level. Tourists go to the resorts but are cautioned not to go anywhere else. There are some unexplored regions of the planet."

The second world is better... and worse. It's a Red Zone... interdicted but no one knows why. Strong Scout presence around the planet. It has no starport, no known population, no known hazards. Speculation has it as a secret military installation, but it may also have an emerging civilization that no one wants to interfere with. I'm starting to wonder if it may not have some Ancient ruins there."

OK, we should avoid the red Zone and pick up cargo to take to yje amber zone planet.  From there we ould see what planets look best for detailed exploration.  We should concentrate looking for useful etal/mineral deposits.  Doing sensor sweeps first then if we discover a good site then do a foot on the ground search todetermin how easy it would be to access the site with the detreminating factor of wether or not it was located already or not.  If not then we could sell the information either to the local government or an appropriate mega corp.

She had no idea what awaited them in the Foreven Sector, but there were no reports of anything unusual, strange or dangerous. Didn't mean there wasn't.

There was a problem with going that far away from the Imperium. They wouldn't be able to make the monthly mortgage payments... at least, not in a timely manner. Having wound up on the Dust Runner because it was being skip-traced, she was well aware how tenacious and resourceful skip-tracers could be. She definitely didn't want to wind up in that position.

It was possible, though, that she could work something out with the bank. Well, a bank. The data was on the ship's transponder... part of its ID. It got downloaded automatically at every starport where the ship came in contact with the Air-Space Traffic Control net.

After checking the local web, she decided to start with TranStellar Banq. There were a few other possibilities, but that seemed to be the best choice.

As she headed out of the ship, she stopped to see stopped to see Harry.

"You might want to see about getting a few spare fuel bladders or maybe even drop tanks," she told him. "Never know what we're going to run into."

Ten minutes later she was sitting across the desk from De'Vante Hollister, the financial director for the bank.

She began explaining the current situation and where the ship was heading.

There was some commotion at the entrance to the TranStellar Banq branch office. A tall and very sharp dressed man exchanged a couple of words with one of the bank's security guards, who seemed to turn pale, then nodded. The man spoke something into a communicator, then the doors opened again. A smaller figure walked in, wearing a hooded cloak, with the hood drawn over the face. The figure was clearly female, and a few strands of long blonde hair were reaching out from under the hood. Then another man entered, dressed just as sharp as the first one.

The group of three was heading for the bank manager, who turned just as pale as his security guard before. The two men kept the smaller woman in the middle and sent glances out to everyone around, warning not to approach.

"Oh my goodness.", the bank manager gasped. "I'm so sorry, dear baroness, but would you mind terribly to wait a little while? I have to take this customer immediately."

Before Luise could respond, the group reached the desk. The small figure under the cloak paused, looked at Luise and then said: "Luise? What are you doing here?" She removed her hood, revealing the face of Siyeon, one of the most prolific singers in recent history. She was blonde now, maybe as a disguise, but once her hood was removed, she was easy to recognize. She smiled at Luise, a quizzical look on her face.

"I'm working on some financial issues. I have a ship now, and we're planning on heading out to the Foreven Sector to do some exploring. Probably won't be able to make the mortgage payments for awhile, so just trying to make sure we don't have any skip-tracers sent after us."

Roland looks into getting drop tanks and collapsible fuel tanks (aka fuel bladders). The former is expensive at 3.6MCr but the latter are only 36,000 for 2.

Delivery of the bladders (empty) can be done within the hour. For an extra 10,000Cr the drop tanks can be delivered and attached/installed overnight.

No problem empty, but once full of fuel, a lot of calculations will have to be redone.

There's several hours yet for Luise to decide whether they want to fill them up here or wait for somewhere down the line.

Harry can't find any cargo going to Foreven. Half the people he talks to don't even know where it is. It's not so much that 8 weeks is too long to wait but that the distance is sketchy at best.

"No, not a concert.", Siyeon answered with a smile. "I'm just looking to move some funds around, this bank manages one of my accounts."

She seemed to have a thought then, pausing. "You have a ship? Would you mind taking on a passenger? I need to get away for a while, the fans are relentless." She had been thinking of travelling somewhere far away for a while now, a vacation of sorts.

"I love them, certainly, but sometimes they love me back a little too much. I can cover the payments. I'll be your investor if you'll have me. Under the condition that I can come with you."

"I hope you have enough storage capacity.", she said with an impish smile. "I don't travel very light."

"If you want to get away from your fans for awhile," Luise replies, "you can't get much farther away than where we're going. Of course, I'm not talking about actual distance as much as social and cultural distance. At least, as far as I know."

"You certainly could have become a passenger on the Frumious Banersnatch without any strings attached, but if you feel comfortable covering our payments for the next two-plus years, that's more than acceptable to me!"

"And it's a pretty large ship, so there's plenty of room for your... stuff. Ha-ha. Are you sure you're going to be comfortable in small quarters? We don't really have any VIP or luxury space. You're welcome to convert some area of the ship into your personal quarters, though."

"Our current itinerary was a departure sometime tomorrow. I'm sure you could get something done by then! Not sure I could, but you could do it."

Luise wasn't really sure what was going to happen, but Siyeon's amazingly generous offer solved her biggest problem. She hadn't bothered calculating what eight jump-3 trips would come out to for a passenger because, frankly, she hadn't expected to be taking on any passengers.

This could work out well... very well, indeed.

When it was finally agreed by about half the crew that going exploring out in the Foreven Sector was what they wanted to do, those who were interested in continuing with the Trade Mission decided that maybe it was time to leave the ship and seek adventure elsewhere.

Kraig, IM and Exler all decided to do that as there was another far trader in the port looking for some 'less adventurous' crew.

Kraig had calculated out their shares and Luise approved them, so that much of the funds was dispersed to the departing crew members.

That was certainly unexpected! He'd joined Steve and Kraig and Gahler back on Lanth at the start of the war. A bit of urban warfare against the occupying Sword Worlders, a desperate flight out to the ship the others had been skip-tracing, the insane confluence of people and events out at the ship, the mad dash out of the system... he hadn't thought about it that way at the time, but those had been Fun Days!

Then Sky Rig 1, exploring Ancient ruins on Victoria, salvaging the alien ship... just what constituted 'alien' these days? Then trading the Dust Runner for the Frumious Bandersnatch, which hadn't been called that, was 200 years old and had been stranded on the planet as a restaurant.

He couldn't actually say that he'd gotten close to the others over those 3 years of events, but he still called them friends and felt like they family. Of course, that's what a ship's crew did after a couple of jumps.

So he was sad to see Kraig and IM leave, even the morose Aslan, Exler.

"Okay, then. Foreven it is," he informed the others as he saw them. "Don't know what we're going to find out there, so I think maybe I should see about getting another biobed and stocking up on extra supplies."

Day looked up at the departures board with a still expression. Scanning the lines again and again. However, there continued to be only a single convincing possibility among any of them. It may not be good, but she was out of options. Left high and dry, well beyond the reach of anything she could call useful. Better to take what was available than to wait for some better option that might never come along. At least, this way, she'd be making progress.

Shouldering her pack, Day started toward the Bandersnatch's dock. Fortune favors the bold.

"So you are expecting to be away for two years? How are the chances that it is going to be longer?", she asked, knowing that she might need to increase her reserve of a certain drug.

When the baroness mentioned the living space on board, Siyeon laughed. "No worries, I welcome the change. You can only be in so many top hotels before they get boring. And I have not always been this well off as I am now, it will be good to get back to my roots for a while." It sounded a bit strange to hear someone looking so young talk like that.

"Tomorrow it is then." And to the bank manager: "Take care of it. You heard us. I trust you will be discreet of course."

When you spend a week in J-space with every jump, you find that time has less meaning in the long run."

"On the one hand, we could find something that takes us farther away and therefore will take longer to return, or the ship could sustain damage and require extensive time to repair. Another possibility is if the ship is reduced to only Jump-1, it could take over a year just to get back by a J-1 route... if there is such a route."

"Hey! Here's an idea! We have a secondary cargo hold. What if we set up a recording studio in there for you? We can get the equipment before we go and then our engineer could set it up during our first jump? If there's anything you want to send back, that'd be easy enough to do for our first few jumps."

"Interesting data about your career, Siyeon," Luise replies to the singer as they leave the bank.

"Well, assuming you don't have a backlog of songs that you've wanted to record, there's always the possibility of running across new material along the way. In particular, you might find material that this sector has never heard."

"While we don't have any musicians on board that I'm aware of, can you use a computer program to generate the music you would need? It may not be the same as live people, but you put it on different channels and can change it when you get back."

"Not trying to push you into this, just thinking that 2-3 years might be a long time for you to stop singing... well, recording, at any rate. If you're okay with that, then so am I."

She made a mental note to buy the necessary recording equipment and keep it in storage... just in case Siyeon changed her mind in a year. And, who knew, maybe they could wind up selling it in Foreven for a profit.

Once back at the ship, she showed Siyeon around and made sure she was okay with the small quarters.

There were enough staterooms that her luggage could be put into one of the other rooms.

"You have a point there.", Siyeon replied, thinking about the possibilities of finding new music. "Yes, I can use a computer to arrange and create, it won't be top notch sound-wise, but it will do until I can work with real musicians. I'll have my people bring the necessary equipment on board. No need to stress yourself." She grinned, fighting against the urge to correct Luise that it's tracks, not channels.

She also had to contain herself when she saw the quarters. It seemed that that ship didn't have any state rooms, but that was okay. Siyeon wanted a change from her lifestyle, and if she wanted to keep living in luxury, she just had to stay and sing some national anthems for some sports events. But that was not what she wanted to do.

"The quarters are... charming.", she said and giggled. Her shoe closet was bigger, but she was here to rough it after all. "So, what about the crew?", she asked. "As I said, I might be able to fill a role if you need me to, I just need to know before we depart."

Re: Destination: Efate

The first thing Luise did once she was back aboard ship was finish plotting out a course for Foreven. So little was known about this sector that it was hard to know where to go. However, it seemed like a good idea to avoid Zhodani space if they could. Avoiding the Zhodani completely probably wasn't possible, considering how long they'd been in that area, but asking them for information did not seem reasonable. Despite their powers of the mind, she had no reason to distrust them, but she also had no reason to think that they'd be either forthcoming or truthful. For all she knew, it could be the height of Zhodani humor to send a non-Zhodani ship to a planet overrun with dinosaurs. While that could be interesting at some level, that really wasn't what they were trying to accomplish.

No, better to avoid them as much as possible.

After figuring out a route to take, she then tried to work out a return route using only Jump-1s, but that turned out to be more than she could deal with at the moment.

Finally, she posted the projected route for the crew to examine.

Once that was done, she turned her attention to a revised roster--who could fill what ship positions and how well.

PROJECTED ROUTE TO FOREVEN
LEGFROM... TO...NOTES
STEP 1:Efate to GrantJump-3; interdicted world; gas giant refuel
STEP 2:Grant to 871-438Jump-3; gas giant refuel
STEP 3:871-438 to Tremous DexJump-2; should be safe
STEP 4:Tremous Dex to EdininaJump-3; Amber Zone; gas giant refuel
STEP 5:Edinina to QuareJump-3; should be safe
STEP 6:Quare to ThanbarJump-3; should be safe
STEP 7:Thanbar to FaisalJump-2; might be a problem; no gas giant
STEP 8:Faisal to BaelJump-3; gas giant refuel
STEP 9:Bael to… 3217 or 3119Jump-2 or 3 depending on intel we pick up

Then she made arrangements with her Steward, to take care of her estate while she was away. Everyone working for her would stay on the payroll if they wanted, just with lesser responsibilities for the time being. She also ordered her luggage to be delivered to the ship, including her PortaStudioTM, which she had used when she was touring. Finally, she went to purchase some more software for her Neurojack, to be able to be of use during the journey.

Adriannah was surprised by the similarities in Harries mix of languages to that of hers. Surmising this to be a standard selection offered by the various training facilities. Re: Destination: Efate

While Harry was talking into his comm, two men in expensive suits showed up. They were carrying a lot of suitcases, bags and boxes, and their suits showed the typical bulge that you see when someone is carrying a gun under it. Both men seemed slightly exhausted and more than slightly irritated. They dropped all the stuff at Harry's feet.

"Where do you want this?", one of them asked without further explanation.

Before the situation could escalate any further, a smaller, clearly female figure appeared behind the men, a hood covering her face, long strands of blond hair shooting out from under it. She kept walking and bumped into one of the two men.

"Oops, sorry.", Siyeon said, raising her head. She was wearing data shades. "I was just watching a new release. What's the hold up?" She took the shades off.

"We don't know where we're going, Singnie.", the first man said, his voice almost whiny.

"And we're really not porters. We're highly trained professionals.", the second man added, sending an irritated look to the first man.

"It's not far. Come on, I'll show you.", Siyeon said, stepping into the ship. "Hey, Harry.", she added as she passed him. The men grabbed all the stuff again and followed her as she led them into the ship.

'That's a fine how do you do.' Adraiannah thought, as if the airlock wasn't crowded enough, with Harry and her discussing her suitably as a perspective addition to the crew. Two Weightlifter types just stepped into the passage. Casting a 'What the!' glance at them, then the small hooded woman who appeared to be their boss. Harry's reaction to the trio's arrival was momentarily puzzling, then an mental image of a B&W archive clip sprang to mind. It involved a small passage crowded by people packed into it like Anchovies in a tin can. Noting the similarities between it and this situation Adriannah also began to chuckle.

Re: Destination: Efate

The PM was fine, though you probably didn't take into account that the man was a professional bodyguard. Also, since he was carrying a lot of baggage, it was more likely an errant suitcase that struck Adriannah's private area.

The man that Adriannah thought had groped her didn't seem to be bothered by the knee to his groin nearly as much as he should have, and even as he dropped the four suitcases he was carrying, his hand instinctively went for his gun in the shoulder holster under his jacket.

Before things could get out of hand, however, Luise made an appearance at the inner opening of the airlock along with Steve.

"Unless these men are paying passengers and have been vetted," she informed Siyeon, "they can't come onto the ship... without clearance from me or the watch." With that last, she nodded at Steve.

"So, just set the baggage down and we'll see it gets to where it needs to go."

She then turned to Adriannah.

"Hello. Welcome to the Frumious Bandersnatch. I'm Captain Baroness Luise Welcher. I understand you are interested in a crew position on my ship."

"If you don't feel you have any skills at the various standard crew positions, that doesn't mean you won't be welcome. On this ship, at least, crew positions are rather fluid. We always have a need for a physical presence on watch for 3 shifts, and it never hurts to have a back-up in many areas. Do you have a resume?"

Siyeon checked on her bodyguard before she said anything. Thankfully, he was okay, his armor took the blow. "What did you do?", she asked in a stern tone.

"Nothing, Singnie, I swear!", he insisted.

Space in the airlock was tight. Siyeon knew her people, and it was highly unlikely he would do something like what he had been accused of. Instead, it was much more likely that he bumped into the woman by accident, just like Siyeon had bumped into him before.

"I apologize.", she said to everyone. "I should have realized that my men need to be allowed on board first. I would vouch for both of them gladly, they have been with me for years."

"More than a decade, actually.", the bigger man muttered under his breath, watching his feet intently.

Siyeon gave him a look, then she continued: "Alright, more than a decade. Still, you two need to get out, I'll comm you later. And you, miss.", she looked at Adriannah, "Please accept my apology as well. I hope you did not get hurt?"

She watched as Harry picked up part of the luggage. "I believe you know where to go?", she asked.

After visiting the medical supply center in the starport and selecting another biobed as well as the supplies he thought might be needed... and arranging to have them all delivered to the ship, Arc headed back to the ship himself.

He was on his way to the medical bay to make sure there was room for everything... or as much as he felt he could cram into the space; the rest would have to go in the cargo bay.

He passed one of the new crew... Forge Harris.

"Oh, hey. Did you ever get an answer about investing in the ship?" he said to Forge.

"If you haven't, it's probably because it hasn't been worked out yet. All the crew are equal partners in the ship... at least, they were when we got it. Now that three of those partners have left the ship, we're still figuring out what we're going to do."

"I suppose the easiest thing would be if you just bought up one of those 'empty' shares now. Is that what you were interested in?"

Arc Tangent:
He passed one of the new crew... Forge Harris.

"Oh, hey. Did you ever get an answer about investing in the ship?" he said to Forge.

"If you haven't, it's probably because it hasn't been worked out yet. All the crew are equal partners in the ship... at least, they were when we got it. Now that three of those partners have left the ship, we're still figuring out what we're going to do."

"I suppose the easiest thing would be if you just bought up one of those 'empty' shares now. Is that what you were interested in?"

"Not a bad idea. Someone that is use to dealing with paperwork can take care of it." Forge said. "I would not mind getting some kind of return for working all these years."

Siyeon waited a beat for any sign of acknowledgement from the woman she just apologized to, but nothing was coming her way. It was kind of weird for her to be ignored like that, she really wasn't used to that. But it was different, and different was welcome. She shrugged and grinned at nobody in particular, then she went to find her room to see if Harry had any issue with her luggage.

As she passed through the common room, she found them sitting with a vargr close by. She nodded at the alien and introduced herself. "Hi, I'm Siyeon. I will be coming with you on this trip. And if you don't have a proper engineer, I will be working on the engines. At least that's how I understand it."

Once out of the confines of the entry dock, Adriannah glanced back at the Shorter Oriental affording her a friendly smile and a grateful nod. Adriannah hoped the woman would understand her embarrassment at the situation. Adriannah was attempting to afford her perspective employer the due respect and attention warranted by this unplanned interview; this was compounded by the presence of the surprising number of people and their luggage in such a small area.

Standing near the table Adriannah Waited expectantly for further progression of the interview and glimpsed Siyeon stroll further into the ship, returning shortly later to greet Mr Oen-kek.

"There's no formal induction ceremony for joining the ship," she informs Siyeon and Adriannah, as well as Forge when he makes an appearance for some java.

"However, you do need to be cleared by our medic, Arc, before we lift off. Your medical records are all up to date, so that part's not a problem. But, between the last time that was done and you boarding the ship, any number of problems could have arisen. Oh, it's not likely, and some captains don't enforce it that much, but it's one of the few rules I stick to... for everyone's safety."

"Anyway... welcome aboard. I won't claim it's going to be a grand adventure, but I'm hoping it is! If you weren't looking for adventure, then you are on the wrong ship!"

Roland shakes her hand, "welcome aboard!" He nods to Siy in greetings as well.

Re: Destination: Efate

Harry drinks his coffee and listens to the back and forth of the crew getting to know each other. Time to figure out how they all fit together.

In reply to Roland Steel (msg # 197):

Siyeon smiled back to the big man. "So what kind of help is needed in Engineering? Can you give me a tour of the engines some time?"

Adriannah welcomed the opportunity for a tour of the Engines; she was a little curious to learn what method Roland utilised for ESP1 a 4; 8 or 12lb.

Giving Siyeon a cheeky smile. Mind if I tag along?

"I heard that the best engineers were Aslans since they can take catnaps, at least according to Chief Lewkowski." Forge said.

"Not at all!", Siyeon said and took Adriannah's arm as they were following Roland.

Siyeon chuckled at the joke. "We are making engineering jokes already?", she asked with a grin. "Do you know the joke starting with: One man and two women went to engineering?"

Adriannah giggled at both Forge's and Siyeon's comments. She tried to think of something to add to but found it difficult, which was one of her pet peeves, no matter how many one liners she'd heard and found funny she couldn't recall any when an opportunity presented itself.

Forge looked at the woman and paused for a moment, "There are many versions from what I heard, dealing with their skill or lack of skill in that department. Others are best left for telling if you have a good idea on how your target audience will react. I will pass as I have just meet you Miss." he said.
