Destination: Efate

Once Day reached the docking bay where the Frumious Bandersnatch was docked, she discovers a lot of activity going on.

One of the people that seems to be in charge spots her, and moves over towards her.

"Excuse me, ma'am," he says to her. "Can I help you? My name is Roland Steen. I'm the chief engineer for the ship. We're scheduled to depart tomorrow, so everyone is rather busy."

"Are you looking for passage?"

Taking the time to get some items for himself, including a high tech stunner, Forge joined the two as they made their way to a local watering hole "A drink works for me." he said. "Harry? I take it that the Captain allows drinking aboard the ship? I had one that did not allow it at all. One of the engineers made a killing when they created a still."

In reply to Siyeon Lee (msg # 53):

"Since we are going exploring into the Unknown," Luise replies to Siyeon, "and we don't know what we'll find or run into, I'd say it's at least a fifty-fifty chance that we could be gone longer than two years. When you spend a week in J-space with every jump, you find that time has less meaning in the long run."

"On the one hand, we could find something that takes us farther away and therefore will take longer to return, or the ship could sustain damage and require extensive time to repair. Another possibility is if the ship is reduced to only Jump-1, it could take over a year just to get back by a J-1 route... if there is such a route."

"Hey! Here's an idea! We have a secondary cargo hold. What if we set up a recording studio in there for you? We can get the equipment before we go and then our engineer could set it up during our first jump? If there's anything you want to send back, that'd be easy enough to do for our first few jumps."

"New stunner Forge, SWEET! Maybe we can check it out later on a passenger" he giggles. "Just kidding. As far as drinking, 'A' drink is fine, no drunkenness though, that would be frowned on."

They got back to the ship then, "Is the captain back, Roland? We have a recruit we found orphaned on the doorstep. Looks like you found one too. Hello. Harry says to Day'loiepr.

"Passage and work," Day answers. "I happen to be a little short on credits at the moment. But the registry board said you were looking for crew. I'm willing to work, and we're heading in the same direction." Day presents herself, keeping herself straight and tall. Shoulders squared, a respectable position.

Harry tried not to interrupt further so he let the dusky girl speak for herself with Roland. He nodded at what she said, admiring her dark beauty.

"I hope not but I got use to using one to keep unruly passengers in line on a few of my trips. Had to stun a few drunks, once had a fare that woke up from low only to try going a few rounds with the medic. The medic ended up drinking his food through a tube for a while." he said with a frown.

"Makes me glad to be behind the controls and not dealing with the customers," Grohlson said after Forge recounted his unruly passenger stories.  Gahler had done his 'playing nice' with the customers and had the steward ticket and trauma to prove it.  He'd rather deal with brutal crosswinds during a gas giant refueling or threading the needle of asteroid field fly-though, than have to kowtow to one more duke, count, baron, or sIr-such-and-such as he did when he was with Al Morai.  Thankfully, since he'd signed on with Harry, Kraig, Steve, Luise, and the other, those days were behind him.

"Yeah, we're looking for a few additional crew," Roland replies to Day.

"We're heading out into the Great Unknown. Some of our crew aren't interest in exploring, so if that's your cup of tea, welcome aboard. Well, not officially; Captain has the final say on that matter."

"We could start, though, by asking what positions you are able to fill. Pilot? Astrogator? Comms? Sensors? Gunner? Steward? Purser? Medic? Engineer? It never hurts to have more than one engineer. Even I can't stay awake forever."

"So if we aren't ready to go by tomorrow, then who wants to go into town and see the Ancients site?" Gahler asked after looking his handcomp's PlanetAdvisor app and noticed that the #1 thing to do on Efate was visiting the archeological site with Ancient artifacts.  From his data entry, the site was discovered in 354 and was maintained by the IISS.

In reply to Luise Wechsler (msg # 65):

Siyeon nodded while she gave the banker a thumb print to make sure the financial stuff was taken care off. Her accountant wouldn't like it, but she was paying him, not the other way round.

"I will make sure to stock up then.", she said. "But there isn't going to be a need for a recording studio. I'm not writing the songs, you know. And the only instrument I play is my voice. On the other hand, is there any job on the ship that you are lacking? I can get some basic knowledge in that if you need."

"My background is contract negotiation. Recently retired," Day says, giving a quick look around at the assorted crew. "If you're going somewhere new, and need someone talked to or a deal made, I'm the one your after. I also have a bit of background in law enforcement. I can handle myself, and one or two others besides, in a scrap."

"But exploration sounds like just what I'm in for. I recently found myself with fewer obligations than I'd intended. I might as well put it to use."

Re: Destination: Efate

"Interesting data about your career, Siyeon," Luise replies to the singer as they leave the bank.

"Well, assuming you don't have a backlog of songs that you've wanted to record, there's always the possibility of running across new material along the way. In particular, you might find material that this sector has never heard."

"While we don't have any musicians on board that I'm aware of, can you use a computer program to generate the music you would need? It may not be the same as live people, but you put it on different channels and can change it when you get back."

"Not trying to push you into this, just thinking that 2-3 years might be a long time for you to stop singing... well, recording, at any rate. If you're okay with that, then so am I."

She made a mental note to buy the necessary recording equipment and keep it in storage... just in case Siyeon changed her mind in a year. And, who knew, maybe they could wind up selling it in Foreven for a profit.

Once back at the ship, she showed Siyeon around and made sure she was okay with the small quarters.

There were enough staterooms that her luggage could be put into one of the other rooms.

Re: Destination: Efate

"You have a point there.", Siyeon replied, thinking about the possibilities of finding new music. "Yes, I can use a computer to arrange and create, it won't be top notch sound-wise, but it will do until I can work with real musicians. I'll have my people bring the necessary equipment on board. No need to stress yourself." She grinned, fighting against the urge to correct Luise that it's tracks, not channels.

She also had to contain herself when she saw the quarters. It seemed that that ship didn't have any state rooms, but that was okay. Siyeon wanted a change from her lifestyle, and if she wanted to keep living in luxury, she just had to stay and sing some national anthems for some sports events. But that was not what she wanted to do.

"The quarters are... charming.", she said and giggled. Her shoe closet was bigger, but she was here to rough it after all. "So, what about the crew?", she asked. "As I said, I might be able to fill a role if you need me to, I just need to know before we depart."

Harry rounded the corner without looking, he heard the captain and another voice. He stopped with a start face to face with Siyeon. "Oh sorry, Siy, is that you? . . . .Long time no see" he says softly, with flushed cheeks.

Re: Destination: Efate

"So, you two know each other? That's interesting," Luise interjects.

"In that case, Harry, maybe you can see what crew position she can fill. She wants it to be a working passage, so to speak. With all those coming and going, I haven't had a chance to go over the new assignments yet.

"Siyeon gets the corner room, and her luggage gets the opposite corner room."

"Also, she's going to have a bunch of recording equipment brought on board. See that it gets stowed or set up in the upper cargo bay."

"So, Siyeon, I'll leave the details to you and Harry as I've got other fish to fry."

The Captain then turns and heads for the bridge.

Re: Destination: Efate

When the man nearly ran into her, and clearly knew her, Siyeon's mind was racing.

Yes, of course. That night. What was his name again? Something sounding royal, with an H... Herbert? Harold? Harrison? No, Henry!

Luckily, Luise said his name before Siyeon could make a fool of herself. So she could say with confidence: "Harry! Nice to see you! How have you been?" She pulled off her hood fully, revealing her current haircolor of choice, which was blonde. "Nothing happened, I just want to get away from it all for a while.", she answered his question. "I'm willing to help with the day to day of the ship, what positions are you short on?"

"I know a bit about Comms, although I am better with computers.", she said. "But I'm not sure if you felt it in the back of my head when we had fun together that night, I have a little port there for my neurojack. I just need to run the right program to be able to work as if I was trained, but not quite like a real pro. So I would need to get the right program to be able to help with engineering for example."

She smiled right back at him, winked and said with a mischievous glint in her eyes: "I know."

Wanting to change the subject, she continued: "Let's cross our t's and dot our i's though. Is there anything missing except engineering? And when do I meet the rest of the crew?"
