Re: Destination: Foreven

"Nah, it's not a ship... unto itself," Steve replies. "It's a research station. Haven't found any reason for why it's here in the middle of nowhere or why it's hidden or how long it's been here. Not sure that info is in their data banks."

"For that matter, no indication of where the people went."

"The base is divided into two sections--the infrastructure/engineering which is the area where we entered... and the research and living quarters."

"I have no idea if they succeeded at creating a quantum invisibility, but I doubt it would be large enough to cloak this entire moon."

"So, the question now is... how much longer do we want to spend investigating all these labs? There might be something in one of them... or there might not."

"And nobody's yet stated an opinion on whether we hang around the Imperial fringe or continue on to Foreven. Well? Anyone?"

"Although I'm not one of your crew," Arlo responds, "going 'back' just means I resume my humdrum routine career as a Navy engineer. I have to say... that doesn't seem all that appealing at the moment."

"If you let me join  your crew, then I have no problem going with you to Foreven. I've only heard a few tales about it, but it sounds like it could be an interesting... experience."

"You spend too much time thinking about money," Arc responds to Roland. "You need to stop and smell the roses!"

"Yes, money's nice, but just remember, it can't buy you happiness."

"Me, I'm still looking for adventure. I think Foreven holds the best chance for that, so I say, 'press on'! Foreven or bust!"

Sitting back on the Frumious Bandersnatch, Forge scratched his chin in thought. "While I am not a scientist, the subjects that they were studying in the labs can be used for both a peaceful and a military purpose.  Take the FTL Communications lab on deck 4. If it can cover say 1 parsec a day, it will be faster than communications using jump capable ships, more so as a secure form of transmission. Major business and governments have always wanted information quicker than their competitors. If any of the information can be retrieved, we could be able to sell the research." he said.

"Did they wipe the memory before they left?" he asked the group

"No idea how far along the lab was able to research it.  Once the scientists can figure out a science, the engineers can start making it. I guess it depends on what they left us and the form of quantum invisibility. Is it invisible to sensors? Even if it only covers 10-20 meters, that could hide a missile." Forge suggested.

"Forge has the right of it," Steve responds. "There's no telling how far along their research went. We can download the data and study it. Who know? They might have been just one step away from implementing it."

"Even if we work out that last step, there's no way of telling whether we can apply it to our ship or what restrictions there might be. Or how long it'll take."

"On the other hand, what use would be have for making our ship invisible anyway? Anybody finds out we can do that, we're now a target for every pirate and government warship in space! I don't think we want to run around like gangbusters. We'll be better served by keeping a low profile... at least for awhile."

"Besides that, we're woefully short on science expertise, unless Arlo's got some hidden talents," adds Arc.

"If we want any of this advanced technology for ourselves, we can't sell it to any corporation... contract or not, they'll never share it with us."

"If all we're interested in is the money, that's fine."

"To throw a couple of cliches at you," Luise adds, "'better the devil you know than the one you don't' and 'out of the frying pan, into the fire'."

"We started out getting as far away from the latest frontier war as we could. The devil we know is back the way we came--that's also the frying pan. Continuing on to Foreven is the the devil we don't know and we could be jumping into the fire."

"That said, I'm still inclined to continue on. I think we should continue to work on this technological jumpstart we found. When we get to Foreven, we can sell the location of this facility to someone coming back this way and let them do with it what they want."

"My two credits. But the final decision is still up to you."

"We might want to start off researching those areas that are almost complete, such as Computers and Vision that are about 2/3rd's of the way there with Comms, Electronics, and Skill Pills half way there. The rest will have to be long term and I believe require a large number of scientists in order to complete them." Forge says.

Re: Destination: Foreven

"While it seems like all modern research requires an army of scientists, that's only for developing discoveries into useful and profitable products," Arc speaks up finally.

"Breakthroughs are usually done by an individual, sometimes by a small group working together."

"I'm under no delusions that one of us will make that breakthrough, but it could happen. Even if it does, we're still only talking a prototype. It'd be of benefit to us, but I wouldn't expect to see any significant profit for awhile."

"Along those lines, the Skill Pills seem like the most promising line of research. It sounds like they already have a working prototype... at least for some. I mean, really... distilling... or whatever process they use... the neurological patterns into a pill that someone can then swallow and gain that skill... It's already mindboggling! Kind of like having an autopilot--a mechanic or doctor in your pocket."

"I can see how and when it'd be useful... but I'm not seeing great profit. Why become a doctor  when anyone can just become a doctor by swallowing a pill?"

Anyway, that's my vote for our first research project... just to see if we know what we're talking about. Of course, we can do more than one at a time."

"Since the plan was to go to Foreven, I say keep going!  Unless someone objects."

If you're focussing on skill development wouldn't the processing of Computer functions serve better for this. It also has the advantage of no personal side effects that may be present in biological outcomes.

Re: Destination: Foreven

With no real consensus about whether to stay or go, where to go, or what to  research first, Captain Wechsler opts to continue with the last 'plan'--on to Foreven.

This far out from the main planet/habitat, there really wasn't any reason to deal with a flight plan, but Luise did it anyway... mainly to file Arlo's official resignation--they just made him a better offer.

After double checking everything to make sure all was secure, it took about 3 hours to reach the moon's jump limit and then it was back into J-Space.

During the week in J-Space heading to Thanber, research is begun in three areas: Insta-pills, computers and quantum invisibility. Who works on what is left up to you to determine. Here's what the week of research gives you:

INSTA-PILLS:

You are able to learn that the process does involve creating an artificial organic neural net and then writing specific engrams into it. Correctly built, the net attaches itself to your own brain in the proper place to make use of it.

STATUS: It'll take about a week to extract, verify and overwrite the 'skill' onto the new net. Stability was an issue, which is why there was a duration.

COMPUTERS:

Directly tied into the Electronics research, it delved into 'molecutronics' and 'positronics'. While the former is intriguing, it would require inventing a whole new set of tools to use. There was still disagreement on whether the latter would be an improvement. It would be faster and have more memory (?) but 3D processing would probably lead to more self-aware machines.

STATUS: Dubbed 'Cloud Nine', you have a working prototype among the devices recovered.

QUANTUM INVISIBILITY:

Apparently the basis for this is someone's peculiar theoretical concept of being able to 'grab a handful of space-time and pulling it over you' to become invisible to the rest of the universe.

STATUS: No one outright discounted the theory, but neither could it be confirmed as a possibility. Of course, the actual process really didn't match the analogy anyway.

The local protocols (Technocrat's Paranoia) has J-Space exit at least 1.5 planetary diameters out from the planet. That puts approach time up to 7.7 hours.

The e-shake (transponder ID exchange) produces no problems, and you are given an approach vector and docking bay assignment. However, it is accompanied by a few warnings: law level is strictly enforced and the prices of everything--including fuel and docking fees--are doubled.

Although there aren't many ships currently in system--only 7, three of them are warships. The entire population lives in the three orbital space stations: Hub, (Big) Wheel, and Spinner.

There's no Downport only a Highport because the planet below is uninhabitable. Some 'crop-dusting' is done for the bio-chemicals that produce Rejuve, starspice and SIN (recreational drug).

Re: Destination: Foreven

Most of it was way over his head, particularly the science, but he did have a toe into biology, which is why he opted to help with the Insta-pills.

He quickly discovered that they could impart knowledge but not actual skill. It'd give you knowledge about shooting a weapon, it couldn't actually give you the coordination to do so.

Only one pill could be taken at a time because the artificial neural nets interfered with each other. Those were problems that the researchers had been working on.

At Luise's suggestion, Steve and Arc focus on developing an 'engineering' pill since the crew is a bit lean in that department.

"Let's start with M-drive," Arc says. "Not sure one day will be enough, but as I understand these notes, you never quite lose it all."

"I don't like the looks of that law level," Luise announces on the way into the Highport. "Although it looks like their focus is probably on drug smuggling, there's no way we want to tangle with one of those warships... let alone 7!"

"I think we should keep this alien stuff under wraps here at Thanber."

"Next stop, Faisal, isn't much better, but law level is lower. We might be able to sell a few choice items to the landowners."
