Re: Chapter 007 - Catacombs Below

Dungeon Master:
Tension mounts as long moments pass, and grips are shifted on weapons.  The party's ears strain to catch further sound in the darkness, but the stygian blackness beyond the reach of the torches' feeble flame yields up no further indication that any other presence is here.  Although no further sound can be heard, Albricht and the elves all notice a slight lowering of the temperature of the air in this room, too low for the others to have caught.

Re: Chapter 007 - Catacombs Below

Vsaati was wide-eyed, but wise enough to keep an eye swivelling between the foreboding corridor and the skeletons that surrounded them in the room.  The gods forbid that whatever was coming down the passageway might awaken those resting behind them.

Re: Chapter 007 - Catacombs Below

Glancing back to the others, Albricht pointed at Lanliss and nodded his affirmation of the elf's observation. He looked around the corner deep into the darkness, allowing his eyes to shift into the heat sensitive part of the spectrum.

If there's nothing showing up in his dwarven infra-vision, then the following:

He slipped into the passageway, hugging the north wall and crept up to the elbow in the passageway to again peek around and see if anything was approaching.

Re: Chapter 007 - Catacombs Below

Albricht's ancient eyes detect no heat (or the lack thereof) in the passage, although he really wouldn't be able to see an approaching skeleton or other undead, as they produce no body heat.  Still, he slips forward toward the jog in the passage, but sees nothing else from that vantage, except a slightly cooler entryway than he would have expected.

Re: Chapter 007 - Catacombs Below

The party carefully move back down the hall to the entry chamber, alert for any signs of undead creatures.  No movement can be seen, but as they enter the chamber again they see a light layer of frost covering all surfaces of the room.  The temperature is noticeably colder here, and strange scrape marks can been seen on the walls and floor.

Silverglade examines the scrape marks. Any clues as to what created them and/or how big it is?

Re: Chapter 007 - Catacombs Below

Albricht scratched a bit of the frost with the stud on the handle of his mace. It was unnatural for certain! Frost didn't happen this deeply underground. He joined in the others in searching for the source of where the marks might have come from. Perhaps they could find the direction from whence it emerged... and prepare themselves for the next time!

Vsaati had her sword in hand and scouted out to the edges of the light, trying her best to divine where the source of the cold had gone.  Her light tread left barely a trace on the frosted floor, as though she herself were a creature of winter.

Re: Chapter 007 - Catacombs Below

Silverglade examines the scrapes and determines that they seem to have been made by something small and pointed, bigger than the tip of a dagger, but smaller than the tip of a finger.  In addition, it would seem that several of them were used in each pass, as many of the scrapes are in parallel, although the number varies from two to six.

Albricht and Vsaati look about, but are unable to determine a direction from which the frost may have come.

Roak shrugs. "We should probably go back to the entry chamber and pick a different direction."

And if nobody argues, he leads the way.

Re: Chapter 007 - Catacombs Below

Albricht made one final observation to see if these odd frosty marks were present within the circle of stone benches or only outside of them before motioning to Roak to take the next passage to the southeast - dwarves having the uncanny ability to often feel directions underground much as elves claimed to do so in their realms above...

@Roak - The passage between where we came in and the one we just came back out of, sort of 4:30-ish on the map...

Re: Chapter 007 - Catacombs Below

For no discernible reason, Albricht cannot find any of the scrape marks within the circle of benches, although there is a thin layer of frost there as well.

<Roak:  You're already in the entry chamber.  Are you going to head down the southeast passage, as directed by Albricht?>

Re: Chapter 007 - Catacombs Below

Albricht rubbed at his nose, which - as dwarves often experience difficulty in taming facial hair and have odd stray flocks growing from such places as the ends of their noses - seemed a few stray hairs had begun to persistently tickle. This was accompanied by a distinct splaying of his wildly unkempt beard. The combination of such phenomena often indicated that something was amiss - or on infrequent occasions that someone had forgotten to pre-soak the beans - but the old delver couldn't quite put a finger on it.

"Odd there's not a scraping in the center... something to remember I suppose. I get the feeling that it might not be the... erm... undead, but some sort of trap perhaps, though we've found nothing yet to prove me right. Watch your step Roak, and you'd better keep your eyes open too Vsaati."

"Hrrrumph!"

Albricht glanced overhead as he made his way toward the indicated hall and shivered a bit in spite of himself.

OOC: I don't think anyone said they specifically looked at the ceiling...

A quick glance at the ceiling shows more of the scrape marks there, some of them fifteen or more feet up in the air.

Vsaati joined Roak at the vanguard of their little group, making sure not to venture beyond what Voran's light illuminated.  She added her sharp eyes and knowledge to the halfling's probing in the hopes that between the two of them they could avoid any unpleasantness the catacombs might have to offer.

Albricht scratched his head like an orchound going after a flea. "I'll be hrrrumph'ed if I know..." he admitted. "The cold has me confused as well. The stones shoulda absorbed the cold by now. I'll get it figured..." The old dwarf's voice trailed off in thought as he shuffled along behind the others.

Re: Chapter 007 - Catacombs Below

Roak continues to tap at the ground in front of him as he passes down the hall, eventually turning slightly to the left and finding that he is standing in front of a closed iron door.  The door is made of a single sheet of iron, an oversized keyhole directly in its center, with no obvious door pull or hinges.  No decoration or inscription interrupts the dull, smooth finish.
