Chapter 003 - Pyramid Tier 4 - Part II
Albricht set his warhammer and shield aside, rolled up the sleeves of the tattered robes that covered his chainmail, and began to heft rubble out of the way.
"The trick is..." he said with a grunt, "is not to sweat. Work steady, lift efficiently and ye'll not lose too much water." He lectured the others and gave tips and techniques on how to move the stone without over exerting themselves.
"Before the Great Fires, the dwarves of the desert... well, it wasn't desert back then. We were forced below ground to survive, and that's when we learned the importance of water. The green things never returned up there. Oh sure, there's a few places where water comes to the surface or collects when a rare rain comes through, but there's a sea of sand up there that used to be somewhat desolate, but at least produced life."
"Downward we delved lads, deeper and deeper, chasing the path of water. Where there was water, there was life... mushrooms, creatures, moss and the like... enough to live on, and for us to survive. Over time we grew shorter, better able to navigate small tunnels, our eyes adapted to see in darkness, and we learned to work the stone, the bones of the earth as we call it. A few clans remained near the surface, and we even ventured out to try and develop oases. The search for water has become more important than the search for gold and silver and precious gems."
And so it went while he worked, sharing the somewhat warped history as his sun-addled mind remembered it, but he spoke of it all in a way which seemed to indicate he'd been there... which to the long-lived elves seemed impossible of course, but it did make one wonder...
