Re: Combat: Post Combat

"Hold up," Darus called out. Standing in the road, amidst remains of the battle, Lady Jacqueline and Adwonus had a heated argument. From the bodies in the street, rebels hastily retrieved what weapons and armor they could; closer to the tower, others hulled crates of supplies inside from two low wagons. Several of the men took notice of the tense discussion while they worked. "Stop," Darus repeated. Adwonus glanced back him while beginning to walk away, clearly annoyed. Darus gave a sharp whistle, and a handful of rebels ran ahead, cutting off Adwonus. Holding swords and spears, three of them stood awaiting further command. Adwonus became much more irritated.

Darus spoke, "This woman," he nodded toward Jacqueline, "tells me you killed Larlben? Is that right?" Adwonus kept silent, his face stoic. "Well if it is, you have my thanks. Few despised him more than me." Herr Johannes looked between Adwonus and Darus, wondering exactly where this was going, and whether if he should interfere or not. About the same time, Dwalin and Taisiya returned from the South Tower, having helped carry the wounded inside. They were accompanied by an elf who towered over them in height, tall, slender, and graceful like a thin tree. Apparently, he'd told a crude joke for Dwalin burst out laughing while Taisiya had a look of disgust on her face. When both noticed the tension in the street, their expressions died away and turned serious.

"She also tells me," Darus went onto say, "that you aren't a Brother, but that you intend to work against us?" Two more rebels joined Darus at his side. "If that's the case, I must detain you and ask some questions." Lady Jacqueline spitefully thought, 'It's no more than he deserves.' "The girl too," Darus said suddenly. "What!?" Jacqueline cried as the two rebels near Darus moved to surround her, swords at the ready. As Jacqueline glanced around in a panic, she noticed Marcus returning. Her brother paused nearby and watched the proceedings with caution, deeply concerned. "You profess to support our cause, but you're apparently related to Larlben! Or so you whisper. . . and everyone knows Larlbens are only loyal to Larlbens. You must also be detained and questioned, until we reach the heart of the matter. Mikael, come by me." The elf near Dwalin and Taisiya ran to his side. "Both of you," he said to Jacqueline and Adwonus. "Lower your weapons and come peacefully."

[Private to Herr Johannes: "May I speak with you?" Johannes asked. Darus nodded. In secrecy, Johannes spoke his piece and handed Darus the note. Darus replied, "You also say the half-orc means us harm. I will NOT let enemies in our midst simply walk away. They will both be detained for the moment, though I assure you, they won't come to harm if they do so peacefully. On your other issue, Biff mind you was obsessed with Pirates. He had a feud with one in particular. And I assure you, we've taken many precautions against infiltrators and spies - we are not new to such attempts, as Larlben and Steyus have tried to do so for a long time."]

[Private to Marcus Larlben: Kris smiled, his two silver teeth standing out against the others. "It'll be easy. You'll see." He reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out an envelope, handing it to Marcus. "Take this. Now, all you 'ave to do is put that in the 'ands of Kelden Delcor. . . and the rest'll take care of itself." Marcus flipped over the envelope; it was plain and uninteresting, and a large folded up piece of paper could be felt on the inside. "What is it?" Marcus asked warily. "It ain't sealed. Go on mate, take a gander." Marcus opened the enveloped and slid out the heavily folded piece of paper; holding onto it by a corner, it fell open – a big map.

"Looks like blueprints," Marcus said. "Aye, blueprints of Castle 'errod. . ." After a moment, Marcus laughed, "You can get these anywhere. They've sold layouts of the Castle for years in the Clerk's Offices. . . And I'll bet you anything Kelden Delcor already has one." Kris grinned and poked the sheet with his long finger, "This one's special. This one's got the Castle's secret passages marked!" Looking closely, Marcus finally saw the out of place hallways etched in red. Anyone storming the Castle would love to have something like this. Kris continued, "Put that in the 'ands of Delcor. No doubt e'll trust you on the spot with a gift like that, even if 'e knows your Larlben's son. If 'e wasn't attacking ol' Steyus already, that'll do it! Then all you need to do is tag along for the ride. . ."

"And at the end, remember who your friends be!" Marcus folded up the blueprints and placed it back in the envelope, pocketing it. Marcus asked, "Isn't this just helping Delcor win?" Kris burst out laughing, "Come now. You really think that idiot could win anything?" Kris glanced down the street. The sounds of battle had finally faded. "Sounds like your pals are done mate. Best you be off." Marcus stepped away. "But don't forget. . ." Marcus looked behind; Kris' smile had vanished, his tone chilled. "We don't offer being friends lightly. If you ain't on the right team, I can't guarantee that mother of yours 'll stay safe. . . or your sister. . . Don't go being a fool, ya hear?" At that Kris turned and casually walked into the alleyway, whistling an upbeat tune as he stepped out of view. Marcus headed toward the guardpost – with a lot on his mind.

In reply to DM Ryan (msg # 302):

The half orc stops dead still, muscles relaxed and ready to snap. There's a rage in his eyes. It takes everything he can muster to keep from splittling the woman's skull with his axe. He keeps his weapons in their holsters and shoots a death stare at the eyes of the men around him and then to the girl with the mouth. "Bet that didn't go how you planned. Next time I suggest keeping your little mouth shut and thinking for more than ten seconds." He turns to Darus. "I'd love to have  a chat with you. I actually think we can work some things out. No I ain't a brother. Yes I owe a debt to the big man you don't care too much for. And yes, this little brat is the adoptive daughter of Llarbin. The man who set fire to the bar the other day and the man I killed last night as he slept. If you want to talk, its gonna be me you and the walls. No guards. No ears. No weapons. You seem like a smart man, and I think we can even help each other and this city." He looks to lady Jacquline and whispers, "Keep your mouth buttoned up if you want to survive this. They will kill you like a sick dog if not use you as a captive. Let me talk to the man and we can both walk free. Try to sabotage me and send this south, I will make it my final mission to take your life."

Re: Combat: Post Combat

(That's.. not how I'd respond nor think of Adwonus, actually... but I'll go with it, I suppose. In her mind, yes, she's not happy with him, but that doesn't mean she wants ill will towards him by being detained by people who don't understand either side of our causes. She wants an explanation, no doubt, but not like this.)

"I apologize for the outburst," Lady Jacqueline states warmly, smiling gently as she disarmed herself and lay all her weaponry on the ground. "I was just surprised. I'll willingly answer questions you have for me. I was not officially adopted by Larlben; he married my mother, and I only met him the other day, but I am not a Larlben myself." She peacefully stretches her wrists forward, palms up. Her eyes were wide with fear, but more so determination to get to the heart of things, no matter what. "I'm not trying to sabatoge anyone. I'm hoping to bring light to areas that we need light upon. Clearly, none of us know enough information, and if this is the way to get it, then so be it." [Private to DM Ryan: Her eyes were moreso wide because she was mentally readying herself for someone to attack her.

10:50, Today: Secret Roll: Lady Jacqueline Raynelde rolled 25 using 1d20+5. Reflex Save.

(This is in case anyone decides to attack me. Natural 20 plus bonuses. ONLY IF someone attacks me. If I'm to be detained ONLY, then I'm not to respond with a reflex save since it doesn't call for it. If I'm to be detained and someone attempts to hurt me, I'll simply dodge in a non-hostile way. I don't want to be hurt, but I don't want to hurt anyone else right now. My intent is to gather information in the most honest way. Please understand?) DM Ryan - Yup!

Re: Combat: Post Combat

[Private to Darus the Prisoner: While Darus and I talked privately, I reply to his response.
     {At first I speak more to myself than anything else, thinking out loud.} "I suppose that was a risk Adwonus was willing to take, or perhaps a reward he is willing to abide, after his actions. (I would like him to remain as friendly as possible to us so he will talk)."
     {Directly to Darus:} "As you think best Darus. He ought to still talk if he is in our hold, if he is really so willing to prevent bloodshed as he says. I did not think of it that way. I think it is a reasonable thought, I would say (speaking of your action to detain him)."
]

After Darus and I return from speaking, I witness the events described.
     [Private to Lady Jacqueline Raynelde: I speak to Lady Jacqueline as I witness the events unfold before us. "Lady Jacqueline, do as he says. You should be out of this in no time, just remain calm.
     Pay no heed to Adwonus, Do not let him intimidate you. I have had enough of his deceit. I doubt he would do anything to help you out of this.
"
]
     After Adwonus speaks I insert my own reply. "I would very much like to sit in on that conversation. I want to hear what you have to say, you offered, I am still waiting to hear."
     I sigh, before replying to the latter statements made by Adwonus. NO longer able to keep my opinion to myself. Now INCREDULOUS of what I just heard, I speak.
     "It sounds like I will not only need to listen any longer but also correct these many new stories you concocted to make yourself look good. Some would call those lies. Or is this the truth you thought you knew?!"
     "My men will vouch with me," I reply to Darus. "Larlben did not kill those men. He wanted a truce with Kelden's forces. What makes sense about a man building trusting relations only to betray you before they begin? If he really wanted to betray you he would wait until you are close enough to hit where you are weak. If it is not clear before, there is another force at work here that would hate that truce. Is that not obvious. It would make no sense to see so many of your own men killed for such a purpose. (Why would Larlben attack while he had no tactical advantage? He lost about the same amount of people, did he not?!) Each side lost around the same amount of men? Why would Larlben act in such a strategically unsound manner. Your claims make no sense Adwonus, and seem to be only a ploy to make you look good in front of Darus. I already am beginning to doubt whatever you may say, after the amount of things you said here to merely save your own skin instead of pursue truth. You deceived us before? What is to say you are not doing it here, again, now?!" As my words proceed forth, my guisarme lowers with the rest of the soldiers toward Adwonus. I too, am at the ready.
     "What is your great need for speaking to Darus alone?! You plan to introduce him to your hidden blade? You said you would tell us the heart of the problem?! Well!, We are waiting! What is it?! IF you can tell him, you can tell us! FINE, Let us step to the tower, before we find ourselves in an exposed situation, then we will speak! I want the truth this time!"  Fire in my eyes, I hold my tongue for a moment until...
     I turn back and snap, my hands wringing on my guisarme in anger, "...and, You are in no place to intimidate Lady Jacqueline. Enough of your disrespect!"
     I lean over to Darus at my side and speak to him about what is happening. [Private to Darus the Prisoner: "Darus, he wants the conversation to be just between you, him and his hidden blade. I believe it is a boot knife and something else. Watch the hidden blade he keeps on him. That is why he wants to speak to you 'alone.' I do not think I can stand by while he tries to assassinate yet another person seeking the freedom of this city. That is why he wants you alone, he wants to plant his lies in your mind, or plant a hidden blade in your back. Do you see? He plays directly on your emotions -Biff, Larlben etc. He is lying to you about much of this, he did not help take the tower, he not only tries to deceive you now, he deceived us too. Do not let him make a fool of you, do not talk to him without guards or escort. I want to be there to hear his claims and be a third party for you to have clarity. He is trying to control you, with your emotion.
     Now, let us move to safety, lest this delay our efforts to prepare for the attack any longer. Let us not be exposed in the open here for some enemy to attack, like his partner."
]

I grip firmly the guisarme in my hands. The more we talk, the more I am filled with distaste. I am transfixed on the situation before me.

[Private to GM:
I would order people to do more things, but the lies I have heard demand my immediate response and attention. I want Dwalin and Taisiya here in case things get violent. I speak loud enough to Adwonus so Marcus can hear what I say.

02:29, Today: Secret Roll: Herr Johannes rolled 13 using 1d20+1. Spot Check, threat awareness; MQ.
}

If Adwonus goes to attack Lady Jacqueline, Darus, or my party I ready an action to attack him with the guisarme. Trip Attack, no AOO due to weapon use. Reach. If he goes to run, I will do the same.

Re: Combat: Post Combat

Lady Jacqueline gently set her bow on the ground, along with her other weapons. Adwonus, his face stoic, followed suit. Soon there was a pile of weapons at their feet. Darus glanced toward Herr Johannes, "You said he had a bootknife too?" He nodded. With a sharp whistle, one of the rebels crouched by Adwonus and plucked out the hidden knife.

Darus spoke to Johannes, "You say he lies about Larlben killing our men, but lo, I say he tells the truth! You are mistaken brother. Larlben did kill our men, taking advantage of our trust! I'd know; I was there. . ." His tone shook and shivered with latent fury. Darus managed to calm himself with a low chuckle, "Heh – you sound just like Elora." Taking a step forward, he resumed giving commands, "Take them to the South Tower." While other rebels gathered the weapons, Adwonus and Jacqueline were escorted to the South Tower, followed by the others. Marcus slipped back into the group as they passed, unnoticed, as though he belonged.

They entered the South Tower and were met by an unpleasant smell. Wounded men laid in rows across the floor, a dozen at least. Their bloodied limbs tinctured the air with a metallic, sickening scent. To the side was a large pile of crates, stacked taller than a man's height. One was opened, filled to the brim with foodstuffs, spare wood, and tools – supplies to hold out against any attack. The party continued up the tower steps which spiraled upward through the interior. Built like the North Tower, they climbed through a trap door at the top. Expectantly, a door to the parapet, leading to the other tower across the gate, hung open on one side, but this tower had one difference in that a third of the Upper Level was sectioned off into an additional room. Darus opened the door to the side room; it must've been the Sergeant's office, for in the center stood a polished desk, colorful rug, table with strong liquors, and stationary. "Take these things out."

Men hulled out the furniture, setting them in a corner of the Upper Level. When the room was bare, Adwonus and Jacqueline were directed inside. "Ugh, I have to be alone with the girl?" Adwonus muttered. Darus replied, "Seeing as we only have one room such as this, yes." Adwonus mumbled as they were herded inside. The door closed shut behind them, and locked with a click. [Private to Adwonus Swillman; Lady Jacqueline Raynelde:The room was empty with only an arrow slit for a window, but it was enough for light in the room. Adwonus and Jacqueline glanced at each other. "I guess it's just you and me for the moment."]

***

 Many of the rebel men returned downstairs to continue their work. Darus said, "Aidon, take these." Aidon, who was perhaps thirty years old and had a long black ponytail, accepted the key ring from Darus. "They're in you're charge. We're going to barricade the tower doors now, and no one will be able to go in or out through them. The only way out will be a rope from the parapet." Darus, Aidon, Mikael, and the full party crowded the Upper Level of the South Tower. Darus spoke to the others, "They won't be questioned until our preparations are finished. Feel free to help or explore until then. You may also split up in safety."

Re: Combat: Post Combat

(Reverting to past-tense. It's been fun in present-tense, but I'll switch for a wee while.)

Lady Jacqueline folded her arms over her chest nervously and leaned against the wall closest to the window. Her lips were pursed for a while before she could think of something to say. She inhaled deeply, yet let out a short sigh. [Private to Adwonus Swillman: "I'm sorry," she stated suddenly. "I.. didn't mean to use the 'race card,' in a belittling way." She stared dolefully at the floor. "I new orc servants that accompanied trips on my biological father's ship... and they called me 'human' often enough, I just thought it to be customary, like a sign of boldness," she looks up at Adwonus sincerely, "not hurtful nor segregatory." Her lips pursed again and she looks out the window, simply awaiting their trial.]

Re: Combat: Post Combat

In reply to Lady Jacqueline Raynelde (msg # 309):

The half orc sits dead still in the cell.

[Private to Lady Jacqueline Raynelde: Don't worry about it. I get it. Sorry 'bout the threat. I've been real frustrated of late. Believe me I did not know the man was your 'father' before I got the assignment. I know you didn't know him, but I did what I did because I beleived it would keep yet another faction of people from the street today. I need your help. You seem more calm now. More rational. We need to not take sides in this fight in the way we have. If these groups fight, we all lose. My loyalty to Styus is more of a personal one, and I feel I can share with you why. When I was a boy, I lived far away from here on an island with my mother. It was warm and things were simple. It was just the two of us, cast out by another island tribe for my birth. I lived off the land and spoke to the trees until the sea rats came. They violated and killed my mother and chased me into the jungle. I spent years living alone. It was my island. I became one with the woods. Obad Hai(nature god) even spoke to me once. For years I lived alone, terrifying refugees and killing pirates that ventured too deep into the island. One day I was captured by Styus's, and brought to the city. There were stories of me on the island, rumors really. Styus had heard them, and meant me as I was a prisoner of his men. They were going to execute me like an animal, but Styus saw me as more than that. He saw the good. He asked if I wanted to make the world a better place, and I said yes. He  let me go free and gave me a job. I wasn't commissioned as a killer. I hunted down murderers, rapists, thieves, criminals. I tracked them so they could be captured. I helped keep order, and Styus treated me with respect. I still owe him for the life he spared. That is why I do what I do Jacquline. I need to reach him today before this gets worse. I have a proposition for him. He secretly funds an expedition for us, to meet the pirate threat in the background. If we can ruin their system, they will be unable to puppet the city. I fear if Delcor wins he will fall to their coercion the same way Styus did, and all the blood of the 'revolution' will be for nothing. Herrod obviously doesn't have the strength for a straight up fight with the pirates. If it did they wouldn't be ruling the roost right now. That's why we strike them quick and precise. But here is where I need your help. You can convince Herr to calm down. He trusts you. Suppress his rage. He doesn't think too straight when he's like that. We need him to direct that zeal to the pirates, not petty faction wars. I don't know about the others. I know the dwarf will follow Herr's decision. Your brother will definitely want in. I don't know about the white haired woman. She seems good willed. And powerful. I know magic when I see it." ]

Re: Combat: Post Combat

Mikael is standing tall near the edge of the room with his spear now on his back. Wearing elvish robes that seem like they could be used in court or combat, with a dark tan hue to them . His clothes almost too clean to have just been in combat, yet blood running down the spear claims otherwise. All of the elvish elegance he carries, his face shows a slightly harsher past than the normal elf. Behind the long and straight silver hair is  a scar trailing from his right ear following his jawline to his chin. After taking a moment to observe the group, he glides near the center with near silence. Facing the group with crossed arms he says, "Now that some of the tension has subsided, you should all know who I am. I'm Mikael Vaeltaja of Galia. Who might you all be?"

Re: Combat: Post Combat

Lady Jacqueline stares at the empty wall.

[Private to Adwonus Swillman: It took a while for her to come up with a simple response to such a complicated background. She respected and admired his opening up. It was her goal, after all. And done so in a peaceful way, no less. "Such a life," she said airily almost unable to swallow from its effect on her, "and yet I didn't know." She inhaled deeply and exhales slowly. "I didn't know all that much about Larlben. You probably knew more than I; I just knew he was wealthy and a man to be bargained with. I also knew I wasn't one to trust Steyus more easily than Larlben." Her hands sweat and her brow drew together in a saddened concern. "I can't shake that feeling about Steyus. I wish I could, but I just can't." She looked up from the blank wall to him. "But I do agree that we need to free the city from the grip of the pirates. That's for sure. I'm not sure if Steyus would be able to help with that part, funds or no funds." A half-hearted chuckle escaped her for a tiny moment. "Kelden Delcor's a lot smarter than people give him credit for--just so you know. I don't need to convince you just yet, but the time will come."

Another chuckle. "I'm not sure what their goal was, putting us in the same room. It's almost like they're expecting us to quarrel in here. I'll have none of it." She shook her head slowly and shrugged. "But we'll need to answer questions that we're given."

In reply to Lady Jacqueline Raynelde (msg # 312):

[Private to Lady Jacqueline Raynelde: The half orc looks at her and sighs. "Sure Styus isn't clean. Very few are, and most politicians can't be trusted. But I tell ya he doesn't want the pirates controlling him. That's why I think he would secretly support us. My problem is this little war. Way I see it, we got two options. We difuse it and unify the people here without violence, or we go on the expedition and hope that we cripple the pirates before they can mobolize to take on the shattered remnants of Herrod. Regardless of who wins this fight it will give the city time to heal and recover. Even if Styus is the wrong man for the job, I still think we could use him to get to the sea rats... I don't know much about Delcor, other than he wants to rule. Weather its by birth right or not doesn't matter. Noble blood is a joke. Those who are fit to lead should lead, regardless of creed or 'divine' right. I'm going to answer Darus. Hell I wanna tell him my silly little plan. I never intended to kill him as Herr implied. That would be stupid. How would I get away?" He chuckles to himself. "That Paladin... doesn't have a lotta room for me does he. Oh well. I just want to let him loose on the sea rats. He'll thank me then. Before this goes down, I need to know that you are not gonna try to get me killed by these Rebs. I'm not trying to convert you or the party to Styus's cause, I'm trying to get you guys to see what I see. To use these sides to get to what the real problem is. Not get caught up in the conflict. This fight here and now... is meaningless. Those lives lost today. Those people, the guards, the boys in the street, died for NOTHING. Unless we deal with the real problem. In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if the pirates are behind both sides secretly. The weaker the city gets, the easier it is for them to exploit it. Will you help me?" The half orc looks at her with serious eyes. She can see that he is tired. He's been tired for years, and his face has aged more than it should be, even for a creature so short lived. There is confidence in his voice, but in his heart the Half-blood knows that the chances of him surviving the end of all this are slim and none. He waits for her response.]

Re: Combat: Post Combat

In reply to Adwonus Swillman (msg # 313):

[Private to Adwonus Swillman: Lady Jacqueline smirked-- no, smiled and chuckled. "Killed? I considered it once. But I don't kill without questioning first. It would be considered murder if the person didn't have a chance to defend their cause first." She stopped suddenly, physically struggling blocking out thoughts about Larlben. She winced, and sighed. "No, I'm convinced that if you're just honest with them like you were with me, you have every bit to bargain for your campaign of getting the grip of the pirates off of the city. That, you and I share in common: freedom from those scum pirates. Mine for a bit more of a personal level than you could think." The words were bitten harshly through her teeth. "I should expect we'll both be on surveillance after this."

She gazed at the half-orc for a long moment before gently stating, "No more secrets, Adwonus. I want to be able to trust you enough to not have to go through this--" she gestures to the blank walls around them, "--nonsense. I didn't want to have to do it, but I felt I had no choice, if I was to learn what information you had at all. And I didn't want anyone left out, in case it left Kelden in danger." She inhales slowly and deeply. "I need you to reassure me that you do not have intentions on killing Kelden. I will have to have Johannes' help to tell you everything that happened back in the Inn, since he may have a slightly different perspective-- but one thing's for sure: Biff really was going to attempt a truce with Larlben. It looked as though it was in the process of being accomplished, but contact was cut short right after the fire...I stole a parchment from.." pausing, she blinks, remembering the short man and the taller one with weapons, threatening her. "There were two pirates in the Inn, and I think they have something to do with Biff's death. I can't tell, though... And they were trying to stop the truce between Larlben and Kelden." She winces at the image of Biff's sudden death upon their presence. "I don't know how much more time we have to talk, though..."

Re: Combat: Post Combat

I ponder to myself...
[Private to GM:

{A frustrated look is upon my face as I find Darus so unwilling to recognize the truth. Blinded by emotion, blinded by hatred, I can see it. I know what it is like, I would. The hatred can become all you see... One must hold onto reason, lest emotion consumes their entire being in reasonless outburst. Hmm... No, one must not hold onto reason, one must look to Christ, for it is only he who can deliver us from this prison of sin from which we are now in. The hate festers and burns, the one who holds it, like a hot iron. You clutch it, like it is your lifeblood, like it is your own soul. It deceives you into thinking it is your soul, as it sears itself to your heart. It is unfair, you being the one injured, are then tricked again to hold on to all you are convinced you have left... hatred, revenge, fury. The only scrap left of a once beautiful life. For some reason it hurts the holder more than the aggressor, the one who was taken advantage of is left with a false message. 'If only you hold me tight, I will protect you, I will not let you be hurt anymore, I will take care of you, we will steal their life to repay them for stealing ours...' It sooths you at first, until it does not let you go. It pretends to be part of you, suggesting false hopes, until it takes you and twists your soul. With its hooks in place it takes hold of you to make its slave. Veiled with the form of righteousness, it covers the pain inside. It seeks to live with your heart, eventually plunging itself into the heart of the thief...

Perhaps I will have to speak more with this Elora, she sounds more reasonable...}
]

Frustrated by Darus' unwillingness to listen to my observations and reason, I follow the guards upstairs.

[Private to Lady Jacqueline Raynelde: I whisper to Lady Jacqueline once more as we move upstairs and she is put into a cell, "Don't worry, everything shall be fine. The Lord watch over you. Knock once on the door if you have everything under control. Knock 3 times for help.  We will be near the door at least for a little while." I glare at Adwonus as I mention the last thing, he does not see me though, being his back is turned.]

[Private to GM: I listen while I am in the room still for a knock on the door. I listen closer if I can hear what they are saying.

{01:56, Today: Secret Roll: Herr Johannes rolled 14 using 1d20+1. Listen Check, for Knock, MQ.}
]

Upon seeing Lady Jacqueline and Adwonus put away, I begrudgingly put my weapon onto my pack. Exchanging it for my quarterstaff.

[Private to Dwalin Grayhammer; Marcus Larlben; Mikael Vaeltaja; Taisiya Northwood:
Upon the address from Mikael, my demeanor relaxes a bit. I turn to speak to him face to face and reach out my hand in a friendly fashion to shake hands. "I am Herr Johannes, and I am pleased to make your acquaintance." My german accent is still apparent even though I am well spoken. I look directly into Mikael's eyes as I give him a firm handshake and slight nod. I stand before him clad in my red tunic, simple design, yet fine quality. Trimmed with gold colored fabric and thread. A cross is apparent in the embroidered color. A short beard and mustache graces my strong chin. Blonde hair now shows from removing my leather helm, {which I do}. I wear polished studded leather armour in good condition. A large shield is slung on my back. Emblazoned upon it is a large red cross,

[Private to Dwalin Grayhammer; Marcus Larlben; Mikael Vaeltaja; Taisiya Northwood:
A sword hangs at my left hip, while belts with pouches cover my waist. Everything I own and wear appear to be well kept, organized, and in place, even the way I stand and move. Sloppy is the exact opposite of my appearance.

"I am not from this island originally either, it looks like you come from elsewhere as well?
I see you are helping out the cause of Kelden as well?
You look like a warrior, please to meet a fellow man-at-arms! That is quite a scar you have there, probably have a great story to go with it. If it is one you like to share...

I begin to make conversation and ask Mikael some questions. {Out of Character (OOC): Mikael: Due to the nature of forum conversation, we often ask a barrage of questions in one post, unlike in real conversation where it would be fully back and forth...}

"Perhaps we should all walk to the other tower while we speak, my things are there and Dwalin and I have some loot to acquire before they lock up that tower too."

Re: Combat: Post Combat

Wind whistled through an arrowslit, stirring the air in the room. The sound of hammers at work echoed through the trapdoor from the floor below as rebels nailed and barred the tower doors. This place had become a rebel fortress in the midst of enemy territory. Darus glanced outside at the sun, "Agh! I must be going!" He tightened his leather belt and sheathe, ensuring everything was in place. Herr Johannes broke from his conversation with the elf, "Wait, you're leaving now? What about our companions?" "They'll have to wait until the 'morrow. I must make haste," Darus hurriedly said, stepping outside the door to the parapet.

"Tomorrow!?" Johannes exclaimed. He followed Darus onto the parapet, from where he could see far down both streets of the city. The roads were barren, though Johannes still caught a glimpse of several people hastily running across from one house to another, the neighbors letting them inside. "Darus, we don't have until tomorrow!" A coil of rope had already been fastened to one of the battlements, long enough to reach the ground below. Darus reached down and cast it over the edge. "I'm sorry Brother, but priorities must be done. I have tactical information that must be delivered, necessary for tomorrow's assault to be victorious. I shall see you on the battlefield!"

Putting one leg over the side, Darus dropped off the edge and slid down the rope. His feet landed comfortably on the road, and he cautiously searched around him for dangers. Darus then sprinted into a nearby alley and out of view. Undoubtedly, he was experienced at getting around the city undetected. Johannes leaned on the battlement, gazing over the empty street when his parrot flew down from above. Red with brilliant yellow and blue wings, the parrot had spent the better part of the day hunting for a meal, shying away from the battle; it landed on Johannes' shoulder, talons harmlessly scraping against his armor. "Hey bud, welcome back," Johannes said, heading back into the South Tower.

Marcus took note, "Hey, since when did you have a parrot?" Johannes replied, "What do you mean? I've always had a parrot!" "Are you sure?" Marcus insisted. "I don't remember-" "I've had him for awhile now. Don't worry about it, he seems fairly trained." The parrot mockingly squawked, "Seems. Seems. Seems." Dwalin whispered to Taisiya, "Could you explain this to me?" "It's a Side Quest thing," she promptly whispered back. "Ah." The parrot comfortably rested on its human perch, beady eyes darting from person to person.

"So guys, we have a problem," Johannes finally announced. They looked at him, already knowing what he was going to say. "We definitely don't have until tomorrow. . ."

[Private to Adwonus Swillman; Lady Jacqueline Raynelde: Muffled voices from the others permeated through the door, but they could only make out the jist of what they were saying. Jacqueline leaned against the wall by the arrowslit, looking up at the blue sky. It made for a poor window, but at least she could see the clouds drifting overhead. The black plumes of smokes from the South had mostly disappeared, reduced to thins wisps of corrupted cloud.  Adwonus sat down, back against the wall. His legs were tired; he'd been standing most the day. They felt more at ease after talking – not perfectly, but simply moreso. "So how long til we're allowed to leave you think?" Adwonus muttered. Jacqueline continued watching the sky as she replied, "Probably depends on how well Johannes can talk us out to be be honest. Not long I hope." Adwonus shifted his legs; he was uncomfortable, though it had nothing to down with how he sat. He had hoped to never be a prisoner again.]

[Private to Herr Johannes: No knock yet. Johannes stood near the door, but he wasn't worried – he simply had to give her more time. He heard muffled speech through the wood, unable to make out the words. The most he could tell is they were speaking to each other, but the tones were calm and collect. Whatever fire was between them appeared to have been exhausted outside. This eased Johannes' concerns a bit.]

[Private to Adwonus Swillman: "Are you.." she turned to Adwonus and bit her lip, "..against trying to unlock the door? I think someone that holds the key to our interrogation--as well as our freedom-- just left." She frowned and folded her arms over her chest. I can try to pick it with my hairpins... She thought, gazing at it and studying it. DM Ryan - Aidon has the keys now. He is still present.]

Focusing solely on Herr Johannes, but still keeping a confident stance.
"It is good to see I am not the only stranger to these lands! I am from the great capitol of Galia."
"Have you ever been? It is quite the sight to behold, a city thousands of years old is quite a marvel."
"Yes I do find myself on the side of Kelden and it is quite relaxing to find myself in the company of fellow supporters."
"As for this,"
He says giving a clearer view of his scar, "It is from a slight... misunderstanding I had with someone who thought their cunning was above my own. However, it is a tale over half a century old. I will tell it in full when we might not be so pressed for time as we are."

"I agree with Dwalin. It would be best to know what he has to say now, rather than later. We have time to pick up the loot in the other tower. I'm sure there will be a way of getting in." Taisiya spoke up. "Unless you really want someone to retrieve it now, I'm sure one person could be filled in, or visa versa." She thought out loud.

Re: Combat: Post Combat

Before Darus departed I continue speaking with Mikael:

I respond to Mikael's introduction.
     "Wait, you are that elvin fellow who helped us (Lady Jaqueline and I rescue that merchant's daughter?! How have you been!? {He is in our side quest, which occurs before this, so I am weaving him in}
     "Galia?! Is not that the capital of the elven isle to the southwest? I would be interested to hear how you came to this land sometime. Perhaps while we help make preparations today you could tell me the story?

     [Private to Mikael Vaeltaja: I lean in to speak more quietly to Mikael, "I am also glad to finally find Kelden's forces to support them more directly as well, and finally make a difference for good. It was quite a journey getting here. Perhaps, I will tell you about that while make preparations, or at least the part you do not know already..." I say with a smile, chuckling to myself, making light that I just earlier asked him to speak as well. "But I must warn you, that half orc, is cunning and dangerous. Be very cautious of what he says. there are others I do not fully trust, but now is not the time... Lady Jacqueline, however, I trust. She helped us take the tower! She was willing to risk her life for the cause. You know already her worth and steel in the face of evil." {From the Side quest ;)}]

     "Sounds like a great story about the scar, you will have to tell that one as well while we work.
     So, you will have to tell me, are you a soldier? A man of war of some sort? What style do you prefer? Where did you learn? How best do you ply your trade? Even if it is things I know already, speak for the benefit of our fellow team members.
" {I am asking here again, more in-depth than the side quest and for everyone else's benefit.}
     Oh! Actually you should meet them! Here, This is Taisiya, and Dwalin you just met, Lady Jaqueline you already know... Oh, I should let her know you are here!"
     I give a loud single rap on the door of the makeshift cell. "Lady Jaqueline, guess who I met out here, I did not recognize him at first with his hood on, if is Mikael! who helped us with the merchant's daughter!"

Darus suddenly steps in, after looking out at the sun, and announces he must be leaving so soon...

quote:
"Agh!

"I'm sorry Brother, but priorities must be done. I have tactical information that must be delivered, necessary for tomorrow's assault to be victorious. I shall see you on the battlefield!"

A parrot then lands on my shoulder...

"Oh, and did you hear the news! I got a parrot." I say with a big grin. He is quite a clever little guy as I feed him a little morsel from my pouch.

I then snap back to what just happened...
     "Arg! This frustrates me, there is no need to have Lady Jacqueline locked up all this time while she could be helping. Darus must have let someone in charge who we can talk to."

     "We definitely need to not forget to pick up the loot, sooner than later. Perhaps we should ask a guard if it is possible to talk to them before tomorrow morning, like could we all enter and then talk while they are all in the room still? Letting them out could start another fight and breed even further distrust to Darus.
     Mikael, I would think you overheard all this. Do you know who is in authority here, with Darus' absence? Do you think it is possible to go in and speak with them?"

     [Private to Dwalin Grayhammer; Marcus Larlben; Mikael Vaeltaja; Taisiya Northwood: "Besides, I do not think we should let Adwonus out while Darus is out and about right now. I do not trust Adwonus."]

     "Perhaps, we should finish the looting, and look for the one in charge, then work this all out with them? Or perhaps it would be best to do it first while we are all here?" I look for a guard nearby who is in authority here. [Private to GM: I also loot the bodies if I have time before we decide to converse, but not at the cost of missing part of the conversation about the secrets, or talking with Lady Jaqueline and Adwonus.]

Re: Combat: Post Combat

Aidon climbed up through the trapdoor, "Hey, what are you guys still doing here? Come on. There's much to do." He was followed by a couple rebels carrying crates. Hulling boxes of supplies, they set them against one side of the wall. There was still furniture in the room that had been moved out of Adwonus and Jacqueline's current cell. Aidon, his black hair tied in a tied ponytail, walked over to the counter with liquors and drink, "Not bad stuff here! Maybe for later. . ." He meandered over to the Sergeant's old desk and fingered through the papers.

Lastly, he opened the drawers and held up a few sheets from them. He examined them with considerable interest, "There's notifications here. Some are pretty interesting. Listen to this:'

quote:
03:17. Fire in Lower District. Tavern called Boar's Tusk Inn. Some damage to surrounding buildings. Apparent skirmish between rebels and Larlben supporters.

19:40. Rebels attacked known Larlben property and businesses. Suspected aftermath of previous skirmish.

06:21. Celus Larlben dead. Lawfully killed by agent of the state. Expect rebels to become emboldened; all guardposts reinforce their defenses. Hire sellswords if necessary.

Aidon flipped the sheet over. There were other notifications, but they concerned only common matters of the day, local crime and the like. He tossed the papers back on the desk. Suddenly, another rebel burst through the trapdoor, looking fairly panicked. "Aidon! Aidon!" "What is it?" He continued, "You really need to see this. We found it off the body of their leader, the Sergeant here." The rebel scrambled across the room and hastily placed the note in Aidon's hands. As he read, his eyes widened. "Listen to this:'

quote:
Sergeant Dugwin, We've received a tip off as to the location of the rebel leader, Kelden Delcor. Tomorrow at dawn, we will be assaulting his compound. If you have any men to spare, send them my way, though I'm aware most of the City Guard is stretched thin. The army officers have been infuriatingly slow to mobilize; I suspect they're doing it on purpose. Even if they were to move now, the provincial army wouldn't arrive for another several days, and I doubt we have that long. But at dawn, the rebel leader shall be slain or in custody. ~ Ulin Morris, Captain of the Guard.

Slowly lowering the paper, Aidon spoke, "This is before our attack tomorrow, and this could be devastating. Someone needs to warn Kelden!" "Send a rider!" Herr Johannes said. "Or perhaps a messenger bird," added Marcus. The rebels glanced at each other with odd looks, confused at their suggestions. Then Aidon realized they didn't know. "Only one problem," he said, facing the adventurers. "We don't know where Kelden Delcor is."

[Private to Adwonus Swillman; Lady Jacqueline Raynelde: Lady Jacqueline tinkered with the lock a moment. Her hairpins jingled around the tumblers, a skill she'd practice for a long time. Then, there was a sudden click. The door was now unlocked. She turned to Adwonus with a grin, "It's open."]

[Private to Herr Johannes: Johannes examined the elf. His spear was fairly unique, an unusual length and light-colored wood. Undoubtedly a kind of eleven weapon. Johannes also remembered that Galia is the name of a powerful elven isle (not a city!). Mikael wore studded leather armor and seemed light on his feet; he was not particularly muscled, but his movements were fluid, graceful and swift. Certainly, he was a kind of light-armored fighter.]
