House Kellington

Lessor Vassals (Minor Houses)
House Kellington
House Kellington: is a noble house from the Stormlands. A small coastal House in the southeast Rainwood, House Kellington is sworn to House Estermont. Possessed of a small fleet of ships, House Kellington is perhaps best known for the quality of the parchment that comes out of Tomekeep, over half of which is purchased annually by the Citadel in Oldtown. Tomekeep is well-known for its massive library, the pride of House Kellington. Traditionally, the Kellingtons have also taken pride in the literacy of their sons and daughters, and though none in the current generation have forged a chain at the Citadel, House Kellington's history is filled with many renowed maesters and produced more than a few Archmaesters. They blazon their arms with a black book bound in bronze, locked, upon a pale blue field and their words are "Wise and Strong". Their unofficial motto, which is well known amoung the nobles is "Powerful Through Knowledge".

History

Who's Who of House Kellington
Maege Kellington
A daughter of House Kelmore who spent a great deal of time in Tomekeep's library. She was always aware of young Samwell's fascination with her, despite being six years older than he. When he was twelve, House Kellington approached their bannermen about marriage between the two, and they were betrothed for four years until he got his spurs. Maege is an excellent Kellington, clever and well-learned, calm and not given to emotional outbursts
Lady Maege Kellington
Emberlei Kellington
The middle daughter of House Kellington is, as expected from House Kellington, quite well-educated and literate. With the dark hair common to her family, Emberlei has a somewhat husky, smoky voice and isn't particularly tall. She is known to speak several languages, and to have studied the healing arts with Maester Lomas
Lady Emberlei of Tomekeep
Walter Mowbray
Walter is the Squire to Ser Baris Kellington from the Stormlands. He came to be Ser Baris's squire more through his family's financial influence than any other means. Youngest son to a wealthy merchant, Walter would most definitely not inherit the family business. The boy was often left to his own devices while growing up and so when he finally asked his father if he could travel the world and learn the ways of the sword, the old man quickly complied. Through a trade agreement only known between the boy's father and Ser Baris Kellington, Walter was transferred to the Ser's tutelage. As a parting gift, the merchant bestowed upon the Ser a chest to give the boy when the Ser deemed him ready. It has been several months since then and Walter has proved a most apt learner, quickly taking to the tasks set him by the knight.

House Kelmore of Oakenlance
House Kelmore: is a knightly House in service to House Kellington, House Kelmore has fallen far since their founding days. Generations of calamity have devastated their lands. Today, their domain, Deepingbole, is deserted of all smallfolk, and its old tower, Oakenlance, lies in ruins. The Kelmores maintain residence in Tomekeep, their liege lord's seat, in service to him, while holding firm to the dream of one day restoring their own holdings to strength again.

House Mertyns of The Stormlands
Dalaris of House Mertyns
The young Dalaris was to be the heir of House Mertyns, having seen a lifetime of tragedy. Though lovely to look at, she carries with her melancholy airs. She is a skilled singer and plays the harp beautifully.
Lady Dalaris
Lady Mary Mertyns
Known as 'Lady of Mistwood'. The Lady Mary is an older woman, with long lines etched into her face by years of grief and suffering. She is thin and grey, and almost seems a ghost occasionally glimpsed in the windows or haunting the battlements of Mistwood. She is quite reclusive, and rarely agrees to see anyone, preferring to let Septon Lewyn or Ser Mantarys tend to visitors.
Lady of Mistwood

Domains

History

Recent House Mertyns has been casted in deep tragedy, bourne of one misunderstanding and rash decision after another that has left the whole of the House very nearly wiped out entirely. With her husband Lord Tallis, Lady Mary Mertyns raised her children and ran her House as a good Lady and mother might be expected to. The Lord and Lady saw their daughter married to a noble of a good house - a marriage based in love that Lady Mary fought for until her husband permitted - and their son, Ser Allard, a great man who served at King's Landing, and now serves the Night's Watch. In short Ser Allard is the very joy of Lady Mary's life.

The trouble began, however, when Allard's mistress Dimesa was found in the gardens raped and murdered. In a rage, Allard accused Ser Percy of lusting after Dimesa from the day Allard brought her to King's Landing. Allard attacked Ser Percy, who was unarmed, and killed him, in front of his mother and sister. Lyessa fled to Mistwood. In a matter of days, she returned with knights, who investigated the matter and found the true murderer in short order - a stranger to the area. Lord of the knights brought Ser Allard to the King's court for justice, and they permitted him to take the Black. Losing his only heir broke Lord Tallis' heart, and he died less than a year after his son departed for the Wall. Lyessa has never returned home.

Now it is only Lady Mary in Mistwood, protected by their various retainers and the extended family of Mertyns. In recent years, Lady Mary has begun begrudgingly searching for a husband, waits for her beautiful young children, albeit one of melancholy airs. Lady Mary is mindful to find a good Lord Protector and has chosen for the domain Garse Mertyns who can rule until one of her children can produce a male heir to House Mertyns. Several of the young men around Mistwood would clearly love to play that role, though Ser Petyr Gamry and Ser Roryn compete the most to win Lady Dalaris attention.

House Mertyns of Mistwood is one of the most venerable noble lines of the Stormlands. To their distinguished ancestry and wide possessions, they have added the advantage of close alliance with their Baratheon liege lords; sealed in the marriage between Lord Baratheon and the current Lord Mertyns’s sister, Leyne. Despite this theoretical eminence, however, for some decades now the Lords of Mistwood have preferred to dwell in relative obscurity, far from the pitfalls of court and of warfare.

The Mertyns have always kept up a reputation for learning, though not necessarily of the kind offered by Citadel or Septry. Sons of Mistwood are bred to conform to a complex ideal; warriors, but with the sort of wisdom not always to be found in books. As for the Houses daughters, they are said to prize good counsel above beauty, and even riches. Many is the suitor to a Mertyns lady who has wracked his brow with despair at her enigmatic demands; and many a husband to a Mertyns lady has later blessed her shrewdness.

The present Lord of Mistwood, Garse, is as close and careful in his dealings as any of his ancestresses. During the Dance of the Dragons, still a boy, he watched his father navigate through a delicate policy, offering harbourage and homage, but naught else, to his Baratheon overlord, a supporter of Aegon II, while resisting the pressures of his siblings, Ser Conen Mertyns and Annis Massey, to declare for Rhaenyra.

The accession of King Daeron and the declaration of war upon Dorne found Lord Garse a perfectly hale man in his middle forties, but the cunning Mertyns pled a serious illness. In this, though, he did not command the allegiance of his whole family, and many Mertyns - younger branches, bastard cousins, and even Garse’s own younger son - fell in Dorne all the same.

Whether the House will always be so willing to wait and to watch is uncertain. The heir to the lordship, Ser Elys, is a notable fighter, and took the curious step of wedding Olyria Frey, though House Frey is not ancient, rich, or very well-reputed, and an alliance with a northern Riverlord seems of limited use in the Stormlands. Rumour also has it that for a peaceful House, the Mertyns employ a strangely numerous entourage of private soldiery. Perhaps the Owls merely await the hour to hunt.

Lord Medger Penrose: Lord of the House. X (51 years)

Ser Courtnay Penrose: Heir of the House, Castellan of Storm's End. Shaven-headed, with a spade-shaped red beard, Ser Courtnay is the Castellan of Storm's End and one of Lord Renly's most trusted retainers. He is a proud and stubborn man, although honorable and skilled at arms. He is also very well-read and prefers his ledgers to the tourney field, earning him the unflattering nickname of "Ser Ink-for-Blood" by his peers in Renly's court. (33 years)

Lady Rylene Penrose: Lord's Mother, Dowager Lady of the House. X (80 years)

Alannys Cafferen: Lord's Sister and Lady of House Cafferen. Married into House Cafferen (52 years)

Stonehelm: is a castle in the stormlands and is the ancient seat of House Swann. Its watchtowers are made of black and white stone. The castle is situated in the Red Watch region of the eastern Dornish Marches, on Cape Wrath along the coast of the Sea of Dorne. It was built to oversee the Slayne, a major river route in the stormlands.

Red Watch: is the region around Stonehelm in the southern Stormlands, where the Red Mountains meet Cape Wrath. It is part of the eastern Dornish Marches and is ruled by House Swann.

Cape Wrath: the western edge of the peninsula is mountainous and includes Stonehelm in the Red Watch.

History

House Swann is an old noble house, regarded as proud, powerful and cautious. They have governed these lands for as long as any can remember. They rule from Stonehelm, overseeing a major river route inland to the Stormlands, gaining them much wealth and power. They are probably the second most powerful and influential family in the Stormlands, after the Baratheons.

House Swann of Stonehelm
Gulian Swann
Lord of the House, a man in his early fifties, Lord Gulian was a warrior during The Conquest of Dorne. He has seen the deaths of two wives already, although rumor claims he is about to take a third. He is the son of the famous beauty of her day, Jeyne Swann, who was rescued by Ser Barristan Selmy in his youth.
Lord of Stonehelm
Ser Donnel Swann
Heir to the House. Though not quite the warrior his younger brother is, Ser Donnel is an astute politician. He is thinly muscled and handsome, with the chestnut hair of his family, and a close-shorn beard. He has recently returned to Stonehelm from being part of the Targaryen household at Dragonstone.
Heir to Stonehelm
Ser Balon Swann
The second son of Lord Gulian, Ser Balon is tall and broad-chested. Tremendously strong, he is good with the lance, better with the morningstar and exceptional with the bow. Balon is quiet, perceptive rather than sullen. He has recently departed to King's Landing, to join the Targaryen household.
2nd Son of Lord Gulian
Rickard Swann
Rickard is fond of drink and likes to think he is a great judge of good liquor. Fortunately, he is typically sober and can often be found hunting, although his passion is fighting people. He has an eye for the greater scheme of things, especially militarily, and is prone to forgetting the importance of finesse in politics. Still, he at least attempts to handle things as diplomatically as possible. Dark of hair and eyes, with a neatly trimmed beard.
Castellan of Stonehelm
Ser Sumner Storm
A bastard of a small Rainwood House, Ser Sumner has recently come into Lord Gulian's service after Lord Gulian saw him win a small tourney on Estermont. Ser Sumner has a squire of sixteen named Vayon, and he marks his arms with a dun chief with three seashells, above a field of sea-green.
Tourney Knight
Ser Warryn
Young and competitive, Ser Warryn is a thin man but quite skilled at arms. He has long dark hair, and a Dornish cast to his features. His arms are a field of crimson, with three white lilies.
Master-at-Arms
Ser Avery Grandison
A grandson of House Grandison, Ser Avery is a perfectly competent knight, though rarely stands out in any way. He has a squire of House Lohaq, and bears the arms of his House.
Captian of the Guards
Ser Quayle Velt
Silver-headed and blue-eyed, Quayle is the heir of Owlkeep. Recently knighted for a martial victory at Lord Swann's Wedding Tourney, Ser Quayle swore to enter service with House Swann as part of a deal that allowed his grandmother to take vows with the Silent Sisters instead of being executed for her treason. His service at Stonehelm has just begun, where his fellow knights have found him a prodigy with the bastard sword. The young man eagerly anticipates that day when Eclipse, the House's Valyrian steel blade, is his as lord.
Heir to House Velt

The small community there is built up around Marchwater Tower.

Marchwatch: these lands start far from Stonehelm in the northern region of Cap Wrath by Marchwater Tower near the source of the Slayne and it's also were the Marchwater Road starts. The Marchwatch and Marchwater Road ends at the busy ferry of on the edge of Red Watch of Stonehelm which is used to cross the mouth of the Slayne.

Slayne: to the east and northern reaches of this river is Marchwatch. Known for its waterfalls, and pools at its source of the Slayne, it flows south through the northeastern Red Mountains, down the west of Cape Wrath and ends at the Red Watch were the castle of Stonehelm rests, the seat of House Swann, which overlooks the Slayne, and the major river route of the stormlands.

History

Sigmund Swann
Sigmund is the second highest military rank under Lord Gulian. He is the brother-in-law of Lord Borros 'the younger' Baratheon. Sigmund Swann has proven his worth during the Conquest of Dorne, attacking The Tor in the Dornish Marches in 151 AL alongside his liege, Corwen Baratheon and the other Stormlords and their Eastern Reach allies. For his achievements in battle, Sigmund was awarded the title Commander and Chief Bannerman of the Stormlands. He is known as a rather tall and handsome male, respected for his educated mind. He has a charismatic attitude and is renowned for his martial abilities throughout Stormlands and Westeros. He is unquestionably loyal to the house of Baratheon.
Maerwynne Baratheon
Maerwynne of House Baratheon is reclusive, and very cautious. She loves 'her children' very much. Nicknamed the Black Swan for having mourned her late father for so long, she now lives a secretive life, hardly ever leaving Stonehelm. She believes her father was killed by a poisoned Dornish blade so is very wary of what she eats and drinks. Her children are the only remaining family in the world, and she has developed a very close bond with Elena and Rolland.
Elena Swann
Elena is very serious, adventurous and concerned about preserving the family. Raised as any normal noble lady would be until age 15. She has involved herself in the house affairs whilst her brother grew up in knighthood, this resulted in her learning the basics of economics and diplomacy until he marries. She grew up to be beautiful and tall though her fathers’ doting has made her vain. Her relationship with her brother can be as rocky as Shipbreakers bay at times yet the calm always return and the loyalty to ones family is the primary virtue emphasized among the members of House Swann. She understands that her older brother will eventually seek to find her a match but the two have discussed the issue in the past and he is content to delay her wedding for as long as possible letting her enjoy the freedoms of youth as she blossoms into an ever more beautiful woman. She knows however that it is unlikely that she will marry for love considering how precarious her family's situation is right now.
Rolland Swann
Rolland is proud, cunning and cautious yet easily swayed by lust, with some martial skill, essentially raised by Stonehelm’s Master at Arms and its’ maester for many years. Rolland became a man well before his sixteenth name day, and ike his father Rolland is a fine warrior who has proved himself against bandits and other squires alike. Although still a squire it is expected that Rolland shall be knighted his eighteenth nameday as all knew his father had intended. For now he is heir to one of House Swann's largest estate with extensive lands. Although lordship is not coming easily to Rolland, Maester Wex taught him much about money handling and the theory of warfare whilst Stonehelms' master of arms honed his muscles, taught him to fight with both Sword, mace and Longbow.  Aware of his youth an inexperience Rolland did not cast off his teachers as he grew up realizing that they yet had much to teach him about his duties.

Domains

Balgair Hall: is a coastal settlement halfway between a small castle and a town, that offers Southern Westerosi merchants an alternative to the perils of Shipbreakers Bay. Portside Harbor is a port town, that is built simultaneously on the coast as well as on little islets arranged in a triangular fashion where the homes of well to do merchants are as well as the principal markets. In addition House Swann's castle home is located on the east of the same region.

Slayne: is a river in the stormlands. Known for its pools, and waterfalls, the Slayne flows north to south in the northeastern Red Mountains, west of Cape Wrath. The Halls of House Balgair rest on the banks of the river, and overlooks the Slayne, a major river route in the stormlands.

History

Sigmund ascended as Lord of the Balgair House when Gulian was sixteen at the time and known as a rebellious soul. The moment Sigmund was made his superior, Gulian threw a fit and was thrown out of the ceremony. The young sixteen year old at the time was not a genius at all. He inherited no good trait of his father and only his good looks from his mother; a weak and lesser minded character of the Swann family. He sought to undermine his father, who let it happen, only for the enjoyment. Sigmund decided to keep his brother away from Balgair Hall and appointed him Master of Portside Harbor by request to his brother-in-law. Gulian would prove to be well-loved in Stonehelm and took up a liking for combat and reading. Though surrounded by loyalists to Sigmund Swann, Gulian has learned from his mistakes and amended ties with his bannermen.

Sigmund Balgair takes usual strolls and speaks with the people. He also throws plays that were created by him which are renowned throughout House Swann and the Stormlands as great performances. He is a slightly fat character with great smile and personality, but is weak-willed and lesser minded when it comes to politics and military, relying upon those appointed by Gulian for guidance. He enjoys a happy marriage with Bethany, a former huntress and a capable woman of his court who has used his connections to be the power behind the seat in Balgair Hall. Though she holds no ill-will to the Swanns nor Stormlands, she manipulates her husband to ensure that nobody can try to usurps his power.
Robert Storm
A bastard, but a well looked after one. Whoever his father is, he took care of Robert's mother (one of the Balgair servants) and Robert. He is a large, powerfully built man with dark hair and a darker temper (various people call him Black Rob although rarely to his face). He likes to drink and fight and loves to combine the two. He's bitten several men's ears off in tavern brawls. Aside from his presumably important father, he's an exceptional archer so Lord Balgair is often glad of his presence.
Bastard of Balgair Hall
Rufus Rofessa
A young man, and third son of a minor mercantile house. Rufus was on board a ship caught bringing in smuggled goods. He was taken and made a ward to House Balgair in an effort to curb his house and their activities. As a ward, his family can still operate, but under House Belgair close supervision. Rufus was brought up and is known to use underhanded tactics.
Ward of House Balgair
