NOTES

Summary

House & Lands

Work with your fellow players to pick a house. Not everyone is required to be from the same house but they do need to be able to work together. Houses at war with one another will not work and background will need to make sense if from a questionable house.

GROUP 1
Starting Region: Dorne
Game Type: Player house, with options for players from other houses and regions (somehow connected)
Starting Time Period: After the reign of Aegon III (when the last dragon died), but before Robert's Rebellion. this is to avoid events/characters from the books, and the prospect of dragons looming over the story.

Dorne has agreed to a marriage to join House Targaryen with House Martell. The Current player houses are experiencing trouble within their own land and also have to deal with the north as they prepare to become the Seventh Kingdom.

GROUP 2
Starting Region: The Reach
Game Type: Player house, with options for players from other houses and regions (somehow connected)
Starting Time Period: After the reign of Aegon III (when the last dragon died), but before Robert's Rebellion. this is to avoid events/characters from the books, and the prospect of dragons looming over the story.

The Reach has suffered a great loss of men and resources fighting the Dorne and now have to make peace at the command of their King. The player houses are dealing with the simple fact that they did not win by conquest and now must greet the Dorne with open arms.

GROUP 3
Starting Region: Iron Islands
Game Type: Player house, with options for players from other houses and regions (somehow connected)
Starting Time Period: After the reign of Aegon III (when the last dragon died), but before Robert's Rebellion. this is to avoid events/characters from the books, and the prospect of dragons looming over the story.
This Group Is Currently No-Longer Open To The Players As PCs.

GROUP 4
Starting Region: Stormlands
Game Type: Player house, with options for players from other houses and regions (somehow connected)
Starting Time Period: After the reign of Aegon III (when the last dragon died), but before Robert's Rebellion. this is to avoid events/characters from the books, and the prospect of dragons looming over the story.

Character Concept

You may pick your age - All player should write a background for each stage of their life. Example if starting at adulthood a back ground for youth, adolescent, and young adult should be created and written as part of their background.

When you determine your background - You must come up with at leat one important event that has shaped your life, subject to GM approval.

Determine your role - players should pick from one of the following any new roles or special roles will require GM approval.

Expert, Leader, Rogue, Schemer, Warrior

Determine a goal - This is pretty important as I will add and use this info to create an interesting adventure that hooks and ties everything together in the grand sceme of things. It's all about what your character wants?

Assign Abilities -

* see post msg #6 & msg #7 in this thread.

The rest of the steps for character creation will be posted later in this thread.

Houserule:

CURRENTLY THIS HOUSE RULE IS
in effect

The below House Rule: Players are to use the normal rules in the books for status. Please note the house rule that player's during house creation can not be the Lord, Lady or 1st heir relate to cannon houses. See 'Noble Houses & Vassals' threads for details on each region. The 1st post will have a list of houses that are open for player character creation.

GM has specified that no player is to play the heir of a House as their 1st character in the game.
Rarely - but a specific exception can be made only after the 1st character, subject to GM approval

Normally status is applied as follows;:

Lord status based on House Influence (No lower than 3)
Heir Status = Lord Status - 1 (No lower than 3)
Second Heir Status = Lord Status - 2 (No lower than 3)
Other siblings Status = Lord Status - 3 (No lower than 3)
House retainers Status: 3
Common folk status: 2

Character Creation Houserules

This Post is the current Houserules for Group 1, Group, 2, Group 3 & Group 4 and when posted here is finial. Because we are playing by post we may run into issues that the books do not handle well for our type of game. We will edit this tread and modify accordingly as we go.

Note 1:
Players must first buy their status as relevant to their standing. This is based on their position in the House.

example: For a powerful Minor House: The Lord has Status 6, his heir has status 5, second heir status 4 all other children status 3. Retainers would also have status 3 and commoners would have status 2.

In Dorne bastards are not received as badly as in other parts so would have a status of 3 not 2.

Note 2:
You may reduce ONE ability to 1 for the extra 50 exp. This MUST be worked into your backstory. There is an option to reduce a second ability to 1 but only with GM or CO-GM prior consent so that it doesn't leave your character gimped.

Note 3:
At character creation you may take up to an additional 3 drawbacks to gain 3 additional destiny points. You my invest these in qualities at the start of the game if you like but we recommend holding on to at least 1 at all times so you can pull it out to avoid a grisly death!

Note 4:
No single ability may start higher than 5 without express permission (GM or CO-GM approval). You have the whole game to train it up past there but it may severely gimp your character early on to start with it.

Note 5:
You should attempt to spread your specialties out if you can. More than 2 or 3 additional bonus dice on a specialty begin to produce diminishing improvements on results. Unless you have a specific benefit from stacking a specialty higher, you may be spreading yourself too thin.

Note 6:
Languages are HARD. This is a period in time when literacy in your own language was a big deal. If you want to learn other languages you need to invest in them. There is a reason for qualities such as Polyglot.

Note 7:
There are currently no rules to back up magic as the game was set in a time where it didn't exist anymore in Westeros. The GM and or CO-GM may build some homebrew rules for this if it fits the setting, though given the last magic died in Westeros when Aegon III killed his last dragon I think it will be unlikely that player characters will use magic.

Note 8:
Currently the Quality Massive, and the Cohort can not be taken at character creation.

Character Creation Note

Here on RPOL, ....

This post is some information on starting and filling out the information needed to begin play.

First, and most important you should read all the treads marked Group 0, and if interested ICs Marked Group 0, 'closed' to get a feel for the game and its players.

Starting with your Character Details:

Under Character Information you have 4 links; Change Biography, View or Edit Description, Select a Portrait.

Biography lines are for your position in the house, title if you have a special designation, and or your home land if different from the house you serve.

Description should have a physical description of the character and some information that many people know about the character. Also recommended is listing their Motivations, Goals, Virtues, any Vice and Mannerisms, keep in mind that everything you list is considered common knowledge and will be used opening by the GM during story tell and maybe use to drive story plots.

Portrait is completely player preference, but should match as best possible the character's physical description.

Second, Your Character Sheet will be posted by the GM and players may add their stats and info to the sheets as needed. Co-GMs and GM will review and spot check the sheets from time to time. If we notice any issues we will make changes and alert the player.

The very top of the sheet can be use for any info that may be missing from the formatted sheet we have provided.

The very bottom can have added pictures/art if you like and any background or story related information the player wishes to include.

Please note that Character Sheets will be 'closed' once completed and opened at the end of each adventure for updating.

Character Creation - * Abilities

Abilities define how the characters interact with the world. They describe those areas in which a character excels and those in which he could use a bit of help. A character’s abilities also provide a glimpse of style, possibly motivation, and strategy in surviving the game of thrones or the battlefield. Of course, to the untrained eye, abilities look very much like a collection of numbers, but these numbers have meaning and in them is where lives your character.

Ability Rank

A character’s rating in an ability is measured by rank, a number listed after the ability, like “Athletics 2” or “Fighting 4”. The greater your rank, the better you are at using that ability. Rank says a lot about your character and knowing what it means can help you translate the numbers into useful descriptions. Abilities are ranked from 1 (the lowest) to 7 (the highest), as follows:

Rank 1 Deficient

This rank in an ability means you’re deficient. Routine tasks are a challenge. Generally, an ability at this rank is the result of some other physical or mental deficiency.

Rank 2 Average

Most folks in Westeros have abilities at this rank. Having rank 2 in an ability means you can handle routine tasks and manage challenging things given enough time. Certain things, however, are beyond your ability. Abilities start out at rank 2 by default.

Rank 3 Talented

A cut above the average, having rank 3 in an ability means you have a special knack or a minimum amount of training, such as a few hours put in with a practice sword or having ridden a horse a few times in your life.

Rank 4 Trained

At this rank, you combine your natural talents with extensive training. Your skill exceeds that of the average individual. You can confidently tackle challenging tasks without trouble and, with a little luck, can pull off some pretty impressive stunts.

Rank 5 Accomplished

Intensive training coupled with natural talent places you far above the common man. In fact, people with rank 5 are often the best at what they do in an area, having surpassed their peers in their craft.

Rank 6 Master

You are considered one of the best in the world at the ability. People use you as an example, seek you out to learn and improve their training, or simply to meet you.

Rank 7 Paragon

As high as any can hope to achieve. So rare is this rank, people with this level of ability are considered legends, once in a generation,

Character Creation - * Abilities

Ability Descriptions

The following are brief descriptions of the abilities and what they do. The SIFRP rulebook, naturally, provides much more detailed descriptions and guidelines for the various abilities.

It's worth noting that, because of the way SIFRP assigns ability ranks, characters in the game possess all of these abilities, but you generally only need to note those deviating from the "average" rank of 2, whether deficient or above average. If a character has no given rank in an ability, you can assume a rank of 2.

Agility:
Agility measures dexterity, nimbleness, reflexes, and flexibility. In some ways, it describes how comfortable you are in your body, how well you master your movement, and how well you react to your surroundings.

Animal Handling:
Animal Handling encompasses various skills and techniques used to train, work, and care for animals. Whenever you would regain control over a panicked mount, train a dog to serve as a guardian, or breed falcons for hunting, you test this ability.

Athletics:
Athletics describes the degree of training, the application of physical fitness, coordination, training, and raw muscle. Athletics is an important ability in that it determines how far you can jump, how fast you run, how quickly you move, and how strong you are.

Awareness:
Awareness measures your senses, how quickly you can respond to changes in your environment and your ability to see through double-talk and feints to arrive at the truth of the matter. Whenever you perceive your surroundings or assess another person, use Awareness.

Cunning:
Cunning encapsulates intelligence, intellect, and the application of all your collected knowledge. Typically, Cunning comes into play whenever you might recall an important detail or instruction, work through a puzzle, or solve some other problem such as researching and deciphering codes.

Deception:
Deception measures your gift at duplicity, your ability to lie and deceive. You use Deception to mask your intentions and hide your agenda. You also use Deception to pretend to be someone other than who you really are, to affect a different accent, and pull off a disguise.

Endurance:
Endurance measures your physical well-being, your health and hardiness. Your Endurance determines how much punishment you can take as well as how quickly you recover from injury.

Fighting:
Fighting describes your skill at arms, your ability to wield weapons effectively in combat. Whenever you would attack unarmed or using a hand-held weapon you test fighting.

Healing:
Healing represents skill with and understanding of the accumulated medical knowledge throughout the world. Rank in this ability reflects an understanding of health and recovery, with the highest ranks representing talents held only by the greatest of maesters.

Knowledge:
Knowledge describes your general understanding and awareness of the world in which you live. It represents a broad spectrum of subjects, including history, agriculture, economics, politics, and numerous other subjects.

Language:
Language is the ability to communicate in a tongue, usually through speech, but among the best educated, also through the written word. The starting rank you have in this ability applies to your knowledge of the Common Tongue spoken throughout Westeros. When you improve this ability, you may improve your ability with the Common Tongue or choose to speak other languages.

Marksmanship:
Marksmanship represents your skill with ranged weapons, to use them appropriately and accurately in combat. Whenever you would make an attack using a ranged weapon, you test Marksmanship.

Persuasion:
Persuasion is the ability to manipulate the emotions and beliefs of others. With this ability, you can modify how others see you, shape their attitudes towards others, convince them of things they might not otherwise agree to, and more.

Status:
Status describes the circumstances of your birth and the knowledge those circumstances grant you. The higher your rank, the more likely you will be able to recognize heraldry, the better your reputation, and the stronger your knowledge of managing people and lands.

Stealth: Stealth represents your ability to creep about unseen and unheard. Whenever you would move without being noticed, you test Stealth.

Survival:
Survival is the ability to get by in the wild, to hunt, to forage, to avoid getting lost, and to follow tracks. The Survival skill is important for a variety of people in that hunting remains an important method of providing food for one's family, especially in the more remote corners of Westeros.

Thievery:
Thievery is a catchall ability for any skill involving larcenous activities. Examples include picking locks, hand tricks, and general robbery.

Warfare:
Warfare describes a character's talents at managing the battlefield, ranging from the ability to issue commands, strategic knowledge for maneuvering armies, and tactical knowledge for dealing with small engagements.

Will:
Will is your mental fortitude, reflecting the state of your mind's health and endurance. It represents your ability to withstand fear in the face of appalling violence or supernatural phenomena, and also serves as the foundation for your ability to resist being manipulated by others.
