Re: Arc 1, Session 4:  Zheng Tien Fong and Hero's Cross
The squinting commander fights two simultaneous, albeit somewhat warring urges — one bids him to slumber while the irritation from the dust he's inhaled irritates and triggers the nerve centers in his brain. Getting groggier by the second, Tien Fong finds his legendary patience pushed to the brink by his elusive foe.

"The path of chaos belongs to the Empire, Anguo. I intend to set upright again!"

Thinking quickly, he plants his foot down, tipping the long tea table upright and into his waiting grip. A grunting swing sends its extended length into the wall. Forget the windows. The rebel will make one of his own, and attempt to lock down the spry old man while he's at it.

As the table is smashed against the wall, the canny doctor finds a second threat rushing towards him — Tien Fong's chi-propelled saber! The commander simply had to get a step ahead of this old man, and by not telegraphing his weapon's approach he hopes to catch Anguo off-guard as he scrambles to escape the incoming furniture.

While the spry Mayor is quick to jump over Tien Fong's flashing saber, the sharp blade still penetrates ancient flesh and draws blood.  He sprawls to the ground, then flings several sharp needles at Tien Fong's chi meridians!

"Then show me the facts!  I see nothing, I only hear words coming from the mouth of a traitor!  How could I betray my country based on a few pious-sounding platitudes?"

"Then seize your hostilities, Anguo! Let me take you to see the lands and peoples laid waste by the Emperor's puppeteers!"

The Elder winces- he knows Tien Fong has a point.

"It is too late,"  The Elder says in a pained voice, "It's begun.  I won't live past this clash, Commander Tien Fong.  I must either seize my revenge now or let you prove your innocence with your saber.  Ask your corpulent friend when he comes to.  He'll understand."

The Elder is no cultivated warrior.  Tien Fong catches him with another long, shallow cut, driving him to the ground again.  His next attempts to fling needles at the commander is paltry, weak.  Whatever strange art is giving him the ability to even briefly compete with Tien Fong is falling short.

"This... wouldn't be half so bad,"  He rasps, "If you were most definitely an evil man."

"You confuse the path for the destination, Anguo. How we arrive matters just as much as where and when."

Tien Fong is standing now with just sheer force of will and adrenaline, pressing the attack as he feels the poison running through his system. Tien Fong kneels beside the battered old man, wobbly and woozy now that the adrenaline has dwindled.

"I pray your reunion your sister will be a joyful one, Elder Anguo," he mutters under his breath as he shutters the man's eyelids.

He feels the poison coursing through his veins, and he looks about for the elderly messenger that brought them here. it takes all the energy he can muster to bellow out, "The antidote! Where is it?"

He shoots a look at Elder Anguo's body.

"The sword, sir,"  He tells Tien Fong, bowing and scraping as he backs towards the door, "It is several hundred years old, after all, and his sister-"

He looks at his former mayor again.

"... I'm off to find Private Huang!  Don't die, your men will angrily kill me if you do!"

The condition doesn't worsen in the next hour, but it's supremely uncomfortable.  When Private Huang (not to be confused with Private Huan!) arrives, it's with Old Doctor Cat.  The ex-Phoenix clucks her teeth, looking at the tableau, then opens up her bags.

"Tell me what happened here,"  She remarks, "You're first priority so you're getting treated first.  The other two are alive so I'm sure they'll stay alive."

"Drugged...tea," he manages to stammer. He points to Anguo. "The Mayor Elder's...concoction."

She pries open his eye with two fingers, peering into his pupils.  "We're lucky you finished this.  I wouldn't want to see Ida on a rampage."  She lets go of his eye, "Good news and bad news.  The good news is I recognize the poison and can cure it.  I can tell by the way your pupil's dilated. The bad news is it'll have lingering effects for years."

She opens up her pack, fishing out a little stoppered gourd and a set of acupuncture needles.

"It'll be nothing in the long run, nothing very noticeable, I'll be bringing your body back into balance almost immediately.  Every so often you'll experience a little episode.  Your body will feel numb and slow and you might stumble.  It'll hopefully be rare.  You do not want to get another dose of Black Horned Snake Bile again, though."

Re: Arc 1, Session 4:  Zheng Tien Fong and Hero's Cross
Tien Fong's men take him seriously.  Very seriously.  The search begins to extend beyond the Elder Mayor's house; Sergeant Xi and the rest of the garrison- along with some of the more experienced barbarians- methodically get to work through Hero's Cross in an attempt to accrue some war funds.  By the time Old Doctor Cat is finished working with him they've begun the process of denuding the town of its valuables and food.  Tien Fong and Mayor Fat Boar are quick to put a stop to it, keeping the search entirely in the Mayor's home.  They find very little riches there, but Old Doctor Cat declares that some of his medicines are expensive enough that they could fetch a decent price... but "It may be more important we hold on to these."

Mayor Fat Boar then takes Tien Fong aside, leaning on the less-corpulent commander as they wander past the town.  "If it helps, he was dead the moment he fought you."  He says, "He knew an old kung fu technique, often taught to the uncultivated higher-ups in governmental positions... such as mayorships.  And then only if you hold on to the position long enough.  You exchange your life for chi.  I make up for it with my fat."  He taps his bulbous stomach, "Which is why I looked like a skeleton when Cai Lu saved me back in Hanging White Paper.  He was burning what years he had left for a chance at your head."

He looks over at Tien Fong, "The Zheng name... how far are you willing to take this, Commander?  How serious?  It may be advisable to pick a new name... and it may not hurt to make it suitably dynastic."

Re: Arc 1, Session 4:  Zheng Tien Fong and Hero's Cross
Dynastic?

Tien Fong looks at Fat Boar as a man with the weight of the world suddenly thrust upon his shoulders. The commander knew only of the certitude of their course of action within the framework of justice and setting Shen Zhou upright. The thought of what came after that —of a new regime that will not fall prey to the excesses and power-mongering of the one it overthrew, of legacies — that seemed a distant dream. And one that did not do him well to dwell upon in the demands of the moment. Such dreams, left unchecked, are the things that bring about the demise of empires before they even begin.

Speaking of legacies, the portly mayor did have a point. He had to give more thought to how the preconceived notions of his father will affect his campaign to swing others to his side. Will it always require that the truth be revealed only from the clash of blades?

He and Fat Boar walk in silence for a few yards before his thoughts on the matter settle.

"Changing my name may be wise, but I fear it will only complicate matters when the truth of my heritage is revealed. And I believe it shall be looked into anyway by anyone that is aware of my coming. An explanation will be demanded regardless of what name I put forth."

Re: Arc 1, Session 4:  Zheng Tien Fong and Hero's Cross
"They can learn the truth then.  I may not have been able to move there but I heard your argument with the Mayor Elder."  Fat Boar says after his own few moments of thought, "You are no longer your father's son.  Renounce your name, get a priest to cut yourself from the Zheng line.  Maybe that'll be enough and you can think of a new name later.  Take on a Jiang Hu title in the meantime if you have to."

He glances at Tien Fong,

"You must understand.  This is politics.  It's what I live and breathe.  Don't underestimate the impact of symbolic actions.  If given the choice between a man who clings to his name but hates his father and a man who has remade himself entirely to distance himself from the defiled name, I'd always take the latter.  The past will come to your door but at least you'll have a foundation of rock and not sand.  Ultimately it's your call.  It's not an easy one."  He pats Tien Fong's shoulder, "And if you ever need any advice you know where to find me.  Bring wine and a roast."
