"Track him. Bingwen and I can make a bit of trouble and see how he responds," Cai Lu decides at length.

"Understood." Thankrad stands up and leaves the building.  Within moments the barbarian seems to have disappeared.

"Some peace,"  Bingwen says into his tea, "Are his kind always so... restless?  Striving?  If anyone is in need of the Way, it is that man.  A good friend of mine would have advocated beating it in to him."

"The Way is not always peace and their path here has had more waterfalls than canals," Cai Lu observes, although he ducks his head in concession to the point, "So, which fight would you like to pick?"

"I wouldn't." The Soldier remarks, "I think we're thinking of this wrong.  Mere fights to get the attention of a grocer-turned-slaver?  This is a man interested in money and flesh and food.  It's shrewder than most."  He leans back in his chair, "A deeply pragmatic, shrewd man like this wouldn't be amused by mere fights.  We also must understand that he'll do everything in his power to claim our charges as chattel."

"True, and we only have one charge that such things might work with," Cai Lu agrees, frowning, "That is now off to watch another piece of the game without the benefit of knowing the culture or cultivation."

"Yes, which may turn out in our favor.  Is he particularly talented?" Bingwen asks, "Because while I doubt he's talented enough to evade everyone here, he might be interesting enough if someone notices.  It may be best to get him back if you have some special plan for him."

"He's skilled but, I think, less used to cities. Fortunately a barbarian in Six Devils is less noticeable than most cities," Cai Lu says, drinking terribly over brewed tea, "We'll make our way out in a few minutes. Let him run a bit, they don't take to waiting."

"Sounds proper." The soldier doles out the rest of the rice to Cai Lu, "Eat up.  You're bigger than an ox and you need the strength.  I've heard of your appetite, even before we clashed at the Pass.  The Giant Priest with the Broken Lu... I never thought I'd meet you, let alone share blows and then rice."

"My thanks for the rice but I must correct a small point. My lu is complete and powerful. That, rather than any flaw in it, is the problem," Cai Lu says as he eats the rice, "It's also made me something of a bad priest. My works tend to pull too hard in one direction or another."

"The Way can be a still pool but it can also be a raging river,"  Bingwen points out, "Your kung fu is more yin, your secret arts more yang.  Together you can find a balance." He raises his cup of tea, "Have you heard anything of the Black Soil Vizier?"

"No, I have not," Cai Lu tells him, putting down the empty rice bowl, "But the name is ominous in implications."

"He was a friend of mine.  One of your number, from what I understand.  He's who told me of you.  Last I heard he was one of a small team that were to act as a reserve force as needed,"  The soldier remarks, "But I haven't gotten any letters from him since the start of all this mess."

"Few have call to know of me, in truth. Aside from a clerical error of cosmic proportions I'm little different from any village priest," Cai Lu tells Bingwen, smiling slightly, "The dog tells me the battle lines are not purely drawn among humans."

"The what?" Bingwen blinks watery black eyes in confusion, "I'm afraid I don't quite understand.  I do understand that the battle lines are as muddled as possible for this sort of thing."

They hear shouting from outside.  A crowd's beginning to form at the door and windows.

Re: Arc 1, Session 4:  Cai Lu and the Way of the Devils
"Aren't Delegates supposed to kill the dog they raise at a young age?  Some sort of barbaric induction ritual?"  He asks.

The two move through the crowds to see two xia sparring.  One is a short little dwarf with a long heavy stick, the other a reject from the Imperial Army with what look like bladed hammers on chains with holes in them.  Honestly, it's no surprise to anyone when the dwarf takes down the reject in an instant, the spinning whistling blade-maces were hardly as effective as a simple heavy staff.

The crowd cheers and Thankrad, bound up in rope, is pushed towards the dwarf.  The dwarf takes the lead and starts walking for the city gates.

"Well, I suppose it's time to become the rocks in someone else's journey," Cai Lu tells Bengwin, raising his voice, "Just because Heaven stole your height is no excuse to become a thief!"

"Heaven didn't steal my height, you dog!"  The dwarf responds, turning towards Cai Lu. "I stole my shortness from Heaven!  After all, wasn't the Monkey King a short one?  So you could say I was already a thief before I met you!"

This gets a few laughs from the nearby spectators.

"Even so, I didn't thieve this one, I won him from his new master fairly." The dwarf gestures at Thankrad, who looks cowed and servile but otherwise fine.  "He doesn't speak very well but he's hale enough for a long-time slave."

"Monkeys can't own slaves, even falsely claimed ones," Cai Lu retorts, cracking his knuckles, "And his so called former master can claim to be a stick up the Buddha's ass so far as I care."

"I don't care about Buddha's sticks, asses, ears or slaves, if you have a problem then kick the unconscious man back there!"  The dwarf gestures at the now-snoozing xia lying in the dust, "What's it to you anyway?  Have you run out of men who'll clean your filthy underthings?  It's hard finding men who'll willingly clean cow dung out of a shipsail's worth of cloth!  Every time you wash your underclothes the river must run mud-brown for a year!"

"Earth chi," Bingwen observes in a low whisper, "I think.  He's a strange one.  We'll have to be careful."

"Hm," Cai Lu says, reaching down to lift the fallen warrior by his shirt with all the effort of a man moving his chair, "This one sold something that wasn't his. That's his crime, not yours, but we have an interest in not letting you walk off with our property."

"And I have an interest in telling you to go screw yourself, then!"  He gives Cai Lu an obscene gesture, "The Rice Gouger will pay handsomely for this one, and that'll be the money I can put down for a wife.  So if you have a problem with it, buy him back from the Devil!"

"He's as likely to take both of you as exotics to sell to his more debauched clientele as keep his word. Last offer to settle this as civilized men," Cai Lu tells him, "The barbarian doesn't need lessons in how to behave."

"Then I suppose the three of us have a meeting with the Devil," Cai Lu replies, walking towards the short man, "And you're already late for that appointment."
