Arc 1, Session 5:  Fearsome Stone Jin Goes to Jiang Kang
"So's dying," Jin observed, "Which matters, victory or principle?"

He nodded towards the attack.

"For myself, it is certainly principle. Why would I seek victory over the aethetics of a beautiful game?"

"Because in the real world, a beautiful death still means it ends."  The Young General points out, starting the end of the game; "As far as the principle of the thing- it does matter to a general.  Using barbarians against barbarians just... trains them.  Makes you more dependent on the next group, if any.  That's how the Jin won."

"The Jin won?" Jin asked calmly, "We sit here in a camp layout older than their great-grandfathers, playing a game older than any field they have harvested with their own hands, subject to a bureaucracy only slightly younger than Heaven. The throne matters, of course, but it is Shen Zhou's throne. Even the barbarians have never been able to change that."

"So we think." The general throws another log on the fire.  Jin's wife mercifully has left them alone but Jin can see his student edging closer, clearing his throat and psyching himself up to interject.  "I worry about these.  I worry about all of this.  This time it feels different.  But I'm young and my father is in prison."

"The guards have left," His student tells him.

August General Cha blinks in the firelight.  "What?"

"All the outriders are gone."

Cha looks at Jin and frowns.  "A trap."

"Two traps," Jin corrected mildly as he stood, "If I were to guess, perhaps three minutes. They'll try to be swift but such is the nature of chains of command. Decide who is best given orders in those three minutes swiftly, General."

"Two?" Three Virtues looks confused.

"Three,"  Cha corrects Jin.  "If we stay and fight, we're traitors.  If we stay and don't fight, we die anyway.  If we run, we're deserters."  He grimaces, "I wonder why now?"

"I think... that might be Feathered Princess's fault.  I haven't seen her."

"Two. We become traitors or we die," Jin corrected before he turned to face his student fully, "Do not think it will be just her. When did you last set eyes on my wife?"

"About three... minutes..." His student trails off, "Damn, both of them?  Why?"

"It's best not to wonder why at this point and just do." General Cha bows to Jin, "We will have to discuss your intentions at a later date, I think."

He gave his student a look.

"Of course I do," Jin said as he closed his eyes and searched for that tell tale tang of Earth Chi. It felt like a storm approaching, like trouble. He was something of a connoisseur of such circumstances.

There's more than one feeling of Earth Chi on the horizon; there's three, two of which are rather close to each other on the camp's border.

Of course, Jin silently cursed to himself, this is the problem with deviant chi cultivation!

He ran towards the two, picking a path across the top of tents with light foot as he moved.

Jin is fast.  He's not fast enough to stop his wife from standing in front of three guards, one of which is bristling with Earth chi, and berating them.

He catches a snippet of 'disgrace to the Empire' before one of the guards charges her with a sword.  She slices his throat with his open weapon with just a flick of the hand.

The other, a black-garbed man who doesn't look to be dressed in anything approaching imperial armor, just gives her a wry smile.  "Ah.  And here's your husband."

"Withdraw in the face of blatant betrayal?  I think not," The man in black answers him, giving him a mocking bow, "Your wife decided she was going to leave, despite orders not to do so."

"If I wanted to leave I wouldn't be here,"
The wife spits back at him.

"You can suggest all you want, but-"

The man in black flicks his wrist and a sharp razor wire snakes out from his arm, lashing out at Jin.  The action is snake-quick, dirty and mean, slashing through the air with an evil hiss.

"Fearsome Stone Jin, we've heard some things about you,"
The Man in Black states, "and we're here to take you into custody for your association with the Pirate King."

"Yes, yes. Politics. I know," Jin says with contempt as he draws his jian and tangles up the wire with a sequence of rotating gestures that wrap it around the blade.

He gave an almost approving nod as the wires worked free.

"The old ways are worth respect, but your gambit's solution was found some nine centuries ago."

Jin's strikes are compact and complicated, unnatural movement refined over the long generations of swordsmen to form the most efficient responses possible. The high strike towards the man in black's face transitioning smoothly to a cut at his legs.

"And your style is old and well documented,"  The Man in Black retorts; though the cut to his face meets only air, the cut to his leg slices through black robes and hits the solid flesh underneath without drawing blood.

The scent of the Corrupt fills the air.

Jin's darling wife looks around as she hears the shouts and screams of soldiers.  She lets out an exhalation of frustration and flits away to engage someone else.

After which he wants to move away from immediate range with his opponent. He'll try and step outside the boundaries, and is looking for hostile mooks.

"Certainly the weight of my martial ancestors' discoveries is great," Jin said as he slipped along the side of the Man in Black with a sudden burst of speed.

His jian left a blue arc of reflected light along the corkscrew upwards path it took, borrowing from his momentum before almost unnaturally returning to the scabbard as the Alliance member found himself truly outside the camp proper.

"Still, my studies may have yield some small novelties of note."

Jin is now outside the camp proper.  He has first init. There are a crowd of Rank 4 soldiers after you.

Once again Jin's sword meets flesh hard as steel and he rushes back, getting outside of the camp.  He finds himself surrounded by black-armored Imperial soldiers- no doubt the personal armies of some of the eunuchs.

"Novelties are novelties," He sneers as he flings his razor-wire at Jin with irritatingly perfect dexterity.  The wire zips around him, trying to wrap around his body and hamper his movements.

"Novelty is only possible with mastery of the fundamentals," Jin replied, his sword dancing rapidly through the air as it batted away the wires. His blood was up and the defense was one of the strongest offered in the Heaven Sword Alliance, exhausting but thorough.
