Re: Arc 1, Session 3:  Cai Lu and the Mountain
I'll let the Craft wave be a Minor Action, actually.  You've got the Laughs.

Starving Cub attack:
10, 10, 9, 7, 6, 3 & 1
*Flowed Strike 39 + Strike 10 + AB 10 + IKF 10 = 69
*Break Free Barbarian Wave 20 + Stealth 15 + AB 10 = 45, Breaks
*Starving Cub Covers Ground to Shaft Walls

The Starving Cub launches itself at Cai Lu just as Cai Lu is distracted looking at the pile of bodies.  He sees the spot he needs to strike, alright, but he loses it when the Starving Cub grabs the burning torch and jams it into Cai Lu's eyes!  It scratches furiously with its other claw and then springs off of Cai Lu towards the wall, stubbing out the burning brand against the rock.  Cai Lu's momentarily taken aback, and now it's gotten too dark.  His eyes need to adjust.

Re: Arc 1, Session 3:  Cai Lu and the Mountain
The draugur may be able to annoy Cai Lu, momentarily blind him, and drive him back from his efforts to free the others. What it can't seem to manage is to significantly hurt the giant daoist. Fierce strikes meet a snapping staff and fail to do much more than graze his side. Too shallow to even draw blood.

(Defense: 10, 9, 8, 8, 8, 6, 5 & 1
1 wood, 2 normal, 5ESC: +15 Block
Strike: 69 - 38 = 31 - 10 = 21 - 15 = 6, 1 Ripple

Attack: null, assume he's out of range)

Starving Cub initiative:
9, 5, 5, 5, 3, 2 & 1
*2 Chi:  Continue stat-boosting technique
*Initiative 19 + Speed 15 + AB 10 + IKF 10 = 54
*Cover Ground to Shaft of Corpses 35 + "Footwork" 10 + AB 10 + IKF 10 = 65
*FoB with 13 for 1 Chi

The Starving Cub hisses, licking the shaved skin from its fingertips.  There's no blood but it seems quite happy for even such a meager offering from Cai Lu.

"Delicious!"  It whispers, then howls as it pounces off of the wall with its strong arms, tusked mouth opening wide.  "Such sweetness!"

Re: Arc 1, Session 3:  Cai Lu and the Mountain
Cai Lu lunges towards the pile of corpses, spending chi with reckless abandon as he uses his staff as a fulcrum and all but hurls the entire mass into the air for a moment, turning as he feels the creature's approach behind him to lash out with a series of long, wide swings that fill the space of the narrow shaft and gives few chances to withdraw from the punishing impact.

A massive foot rises up, planting itself on the relatively tiny creature and kicking it back towards the deeper recesses.

Re: Arc 1, Session 3:  Cai Lu and the Mountain
It says you spent 1 MalJoss on the dieroller- I'm assuming it's a Chiv for his/her roll.

Lesser Legends are freed, they'll engage next round.

Starving Cub Defense:
9, 6, 5, 3, 2, 2 & 1
*Defense vs Strike 22 + Footwork 10 + AB 10 + IKF 10 - Better Blocked 5 = 47 vs 66, takes Ripple + Roll
*Defense vs Knockback 19 + Stealth 15 + AB 10 = 44 vs 42, avoids

Ripple + Roll:
*13 + Damage 10 = 23 - Toughness 0 - Toughness IKF 10 - Chi Aura 10 (haha wow) = 3, a Trivial

Starving Cub Attack:
9, 8, 7, 6, 4, 3 & 1
*3 Chi:  Block is -10
*Strike 19 + Strike 10 + AB 10 + IKF 10 = 49, Better Dodged so Block -5, Block is -10

Cai Lu has first init.

The shaft isn't quite as narrow as Cai Lu would like- it's enough for him to make some wide strikes and definitely to free the two barbarians.  It squeals as his staff manages to find purchase, but as Cai Lu tries to kick it off it latches onto his foot and crawls up his leg!  Then it starts furiously raking at his chest with powerful reaching grabs of its arms, inside of his guard.

Re: Arc 1, Session 3:  Cai Lu and the Mountain
Tight confines were a mixed blessing for such a giant. He couldn't really move out of the way but at least his bulk limited the directions he could be attacked from. Slipping around to his side wasn't an option for anything larger than a mouse in these tunnels.

So he meets the creature directly, trusting in his innate toughness and compact blocks to stop the worst of the damage.

Cai Lu is playing for time; this thing is fast but can't take a beating from what his last staff blow had shown.

(Meant to spend an M.Joss but forgot to reset the roller from 9 after init. Switching to a C.Joss just seemed the fairest way to avoid rerolling or dropping a die.

Trivial: Bruised Left Ankle

Defense: 8, 6, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 & 1

Cai Lu, you can attack this sucker now.

The Starving Cub charges at Cai Lu again, moving faster than he can really get a handle on.  It twists and bites at his arms and chest before pushing off and clawing up the side of the wall.

"Cai Lu," Thankrad calls out, "Keep it nice and simple!  It's like me!"  He flings a brace of throwing daggers at it from a dark alcove, and while they're definitely not well-aimed it can't see them as well either.  One finds its arm and it howls.

Well, that's all great and all, but Cai Lu's never faced him!  Roza grabs a bundle of Thankrad's twigs, lighting it and putting it on an arrow.  Her sharp eyes immediately locate where the creature is and she fires an arrow at it. "Draugr hate light!"

Sure enough, the creature bats away the arrow and in so doing loses its handhold.  It scrabbles fiercely for purchase but fails, landing back into the shaft with Cai Lu.

Re: Arc 1, Session 3:  Cai Lu and the Mountain
Cai Lu wastes no breath on the draugur, bulling forward, shoulder down and staff to the side, taking up as much space in the shaft as possible. He tries to hit the creature around it's tiny waist, size and momentum knocking his lighter opponent deeper into the depth.

Cai Lu tries to bull into it, trampling the creature.  It pushes itself away from him, using Cai Lu's own momentum to throw it deep into the side shaft.  But that disorients it, leaving it woozily swaying in the tunnel.

And giving Cai Lu and the others some breathing room.

"Roza, catch. It's just getting in my way down here!" Cai Lu says, tossing his staff to Roza, "Get up the stairs, I'm bringing up the rear."

Hopefully this can be a slow, measured withdrawal. Once they're in sight of the exit, well, then a more durable solution will have to be found.

Roza catches the staff and they all head up the stairs.  Thankrad uses the last of his burning brands to light the way, then starts flinging knives behind them to try to dissuade it.  It starts catching up, clambering up the walls after them but they do have a head start.  Eventually they make it to the entrance, the Starving Cub in hot pursuit.

The broken door lies on the ground in front of them.

The echoes of their feet hitting the ground sound like "Woe!  Woe!".

"I'm going to have to destroy the supports," Cai Lu tells the barbarians, rolling his shoulder, "Stay close for a moment to help distract it; but when it starts to fall, run. If I'm stuck with it someone has to report back."

Re: Arc 1, Session 3:  Cai Lu and the Mountain
Difficulty is 40 by Might, 30 by Craft.  Tunnels like this are meant to be kept intact but that means that it's fairly obvious on how to break them.

Roll init, she'll try to do the same.  Ideally you should win a Shaping Wave as well as Covering Ground away from there.  I'll allow the CG to occur after the Shaping Wave.

"Right,"  Roza furrows her brows, "We have the sun to our backs.  It'll go slower!"

"Nothing too heroic, Cai Lu.  Smash it and get back.  I'm the disposable one if need be."  Thankrad tells him, "Here it comes!"

The Starving Cub's mouth is flecked with froth and blood.  It starts charging down the tunnel with its long arms, flinching as the light of the setting sun hits it.

Re: Arc 1, Session 3:  Cai Lu and the Mountain
Cai Lu doesn't answer, instead grabbing the exposed supports and twisting. He couldn't pull them clear, instead trying to shift them and let the tons of weight each held finish the job of pushing things down. There's not artistry to it, or even time for more than a quick bellow at the effort, before he's racing towards the light.

The Starving Cub starts charging forward, but Thankrad and Roza keep it at bay with dozens of projectiles.  That slows it down just enough for Cai Lu to effectively entomb it and run away.

Well, except for the air hole.

"Well.  We survived,"  Thankrad sounds surprised but doesn't otherwise show it.  "Good work, Cai Lu."

"But it's not dead,"  Roza looks at the pile of rubble that stops up the mine, "I feel we should've killed it.  Nothing good can come of this."

He gives the two of them a nod and sets off with as much speed as he can managed. Luckily, they'd all passed through so recently that there was a fresh trail to follow in addition to his own memories.

Cai Lu's thoughts drift to Joss Sticks and curses as he lightfoots.

Re: Arc 1, Session 3:  Cai Lu and the Mountain
"Here me you divine ministers and directors of the motion of the mountains. I am Cai Lu, seventh degree adept of the Heavenly Masters, who bears the rank of Abbot and carries the Diamond Star Lu," the giant begins rumbling, drawing upon heavenly authority and his own chi to bolster the formula, "By the rights granted me as one who has walked the Celestial Ox's path and been anointed in the slow waters of the third heavenly river of stars do I empower the curse upon this place. What was frayed, I mend, and set it to holding the creature in the mine from the surface."

He slams his staff into the ground around the opening eight times, tracing a circle around it, then another as he adds more lines, until a rough trigram emerges. He wipes the other seven away when he's done, leaving three broken lines. Pure yin. Water.

"I separate you from the bright sky and the dark clouds. I separate you from the moon and stars. Go back, the open sky is no longer your home!"

Restore Curse: 9, 9, 5, 5, 5, 1, 1 & 1

Starving Cub tries to deal with the curse:
9, 7, 4, 4, 4, 3 & 2
*Dealing 34 + Wu Wei 5 = 39 vs 65 - 15 (Cai Lu doesn't have the techniques needed to properly reinstate it!).  We can set it at Recovery 40 and then have the Inflame actions bring it to 50.

The Starving Cub hisses at the sound of Cai Lu's voice.  He can hear it trying to climb!  Normally Cai Lu wouldn't quite be able to do this, but the pieces of the curse were all still technically in place; all he had to do was to put them back together.  When it falls into place he can hear the Starving Cub's claws slide back down stone, and then an unearthly wail.

"Noooo!  Hungry... feed me babaaaaaa-"

Then it sobs and seems to withdraw further into the mine.

It wouldn't hold forever but, with luck, it might last for a week or two. Enough time to come up with a more permanent solution. Given the abundance of corpses in there with it, starvation seemed unlikely.

Cai Lu uses his staff to stay upright as he hears the scratching and babble fade, wiping his forehead on his sleeve. After ten minutes of quiet he moves to rejoin the barbarians.

Their fire's died down and Thankrad's just ventured beyond it to grab more sticks when he comes back.  They're sweating from the heat but are otherwise unscathed.

"Did it work?  What did you do?"  Thankrad asks him.

"I wish we'd gotten to kill it, but it's too strong.  It'd take a real hero to probably kill it for good," Roza says morosely. "I'm going to have nightmares about it for weeks."
