The West Wing - Netherworld Campaign Thread

Antonio's face is a visage of shock and horror when the truth be told about what Hammerforge Delverdeep was offering.

Sputtering he says, "I'm pretty sure my father wouldn't aspire to use your services, sir!"

John looks puzzled. "Whyever not? Don't all the smiths here take pride in working steel, adamantine, and mithril?"

"But, but, to use someones soul?" Antonio gasps.

"Why sure, we are willing to work any type of metal; even work magic properties into it, but to infuse some beings soul into the steel sounds ghastly."

(Not all smiths do every kind of forging nor do they know about every type of forging. He is ignorant to this process, and in his ignorance, he's shocked at what he thinks it means.)

Ham agrees and drinks of the ale now. "Oh, I agree with you young master. My Grand Great Uncle insists on tapping the heat of the world itself though. He says he hears Moradin in the flow of the Molten rock. And that it works into a fine filigree that is perfect for the sigils he scatters through the dark.  I was down there once as a young'un; long before I was on his cut crew. They seemed worried at their home, confused me as a child. I learned later they had liberated the space from those brain robbin freaks." he wiggles his fingers through his beard, pantomiming a Mind Flayer.  "But the forge they found on the edge of the glowing pool of rock was clearly Dwarven. They feel obliged to defend it any way they can."

If you want to craft something, tell me your process, make some rolls, and we'll see how it turns out.

To determine how much time and money it takes to make an item, follow these steps.

Find the item’s price. Put the price in silver pieces (1 gp = 10 sp).
Find the DC from the table below.
Pay one-third of the item’s price for the cost of raw materials.

Make an appropriate Craft check representing one week’s work. If the check succeeds, multiply your check result by the DC. If the result × the DC equals the price of the item in sp, then you have completed the item. (If the result × the DC equals double or triple the price of the item in silver pieces, then you’ve completed the task in one-half or one-third of the time. Other multiples of the DC reduce the time in the same manner.) If the result × the DC doesn’t equal the price, then it represents the progress you’ve made this week. Record the result and make a new Craft check for the next week. Each week, you make more progress until your total reaches the price of the item in silver pieces.

Ham continues with the silly grin and is agreeable with everything the other's say. finally he makes eye contact with Antonio. All I really need to do is  fix my armor and say some words while I'm at it. but alas, I've got no coins to trade for the time. Maybe I can make something for your store to sell?

Antonio obliges, and when the older man takes a break, he introduces you to his father, Petrajolo Negroli.

"Father, I'd like to introduce you to Hammerforge Delverdeep. He wishes to use our forge to repair his armor, and in payment for the use, he says he'll make something to pay us for the use of it."

"Greetings, and well met, Hammerforge Delverdeep!" Petrajolo says warmly as he wipes sweat from his red face with a sopping wet dirty rag.

"And to you Forge Master. I serve humbly but offer much in return for the honor of working along side ya." Ham says with a wry smile, not at all grinning like a fool as he did with the younger Negroli."I am steeped in ancestral and religious lore of Dwarven smithing. I've worked my great granduncle's #10 production forge, so I know how to work and stay out of the way. "

Ham shrugs and holds his palms out, he's trying to feel humble, or at least appear that way. "There are hundreds of aspiring Dwarves for every  bit of Anvil space in any Dwarven community. Every clan has a forge or two that we learn on. My clan has four inclding two production facilities. " he says and can't contain his pride when speaking of his clan. "It's a cuthroat climb to working any commercial forge in Dwarven lands, even for Dwarves. I'm in the overflow, the reserves. We work the mines to keep strong until we are needed. "  he admits, pride falling away. "I've toiled in the depths, mucking and cutting, chasing veins only dwarves can detect. Always pale like a cave worm under the grime of ore dust.  "

A man clad in plate comes to the forgemaster. He says "I have some red dragonhide here for sale. It's enough for several man-sized suits of armor and shields which would be fire resistant. What can you give me for it?"

Using his own knowledge of armors and the value of special materials, John makes an estimate of the Red Dragonhide in his possession.

09:19, Today: John D'oh rolled 14 using 1d20+4.  Appraise value.

LOL, hahaha, hehehe... The whole point of the counter was to indirectly ask you what you thought it was worth. When I posted the info I found, you thought the value was too little. You never did say what you thought it should be worth. If you leave it up to me, I'll go by what the RAW rules were. So, give me an idea of what you think they should be worth, and I'll think it over.

And as I never got an answer to MY question about the SIZE of the carcass (i.e. Large, Huge, Enormous, etc), I am having trouble assigning a value based on how much raw materials for armors it provides. 32 feet diameter iseither Gargantuan or Colossal, not sure which.

John says "hmmmm, were I to work with it, I could fashion half-plate for a gnome or halfling, and a heavy shield as well. Market for that is about 620 gold, so materials clocks in at 207. The material makes it Masterwork, so add another 50 gold. Add to that a natural fireproofing that doesn't require an enchantment(Resist Fire 10?). I'm thinking it's worth about 9250 gold."

Yikes...

Dragonhide, Red: Red dragonhide is a deep scarlet tone with a dull, smooth finish. Armor made from treated red dragonhide grants fire resistance 2.

Specially treated red dragonhide weighs the same as steel, has hardness 20, and has 40 hit points per inch of thickness.

Market Price Modifier: +2,000 gp.

These are the prices for this item when made with specific materials https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD: Dragonhide_Armor ... equals only 330 gp.

So, with all that and a lot of time spent asking other DM's, I'm going to stick with about 1500 gp

Petrajolo looks over the items, screws up his nose at the sword and shield knowing he'd have to work on them to bring them back to their full potential, and offers 20 gp for the sword, and only 3 gp for the light steel shield. He'll offer you 100 gp for the chain shirt or 1,100 gp for it if it's been identified.
