Aboard the Passelande

Brun was at a loss for words.  He even forgot to shake the offered hand

Every instinct in him told him to decline the offer.  He was not worthy enough for such a position.  Discarded.  Scrounged back together, much like his Lady.  He had managed to rebuild a life and a purpose for himself...but he was not of the caliber of the Knights of Avaluna.  They were the greatest of the greats, after all.  John Arthur chose nothing less than the best.

Which is really the only thing that gave him pause.  If John Arthur himself was making this offer, then perhaps he saw some greater use in Brun than Brun saw in himself.  He started to ask if Arthur was /sure/ about making such an offer.  But who was he to question a king?

And besides.  Avaluna did have the best forges in the system.

Unsure whether to bow or not, Brun decided to maintain the informalness by which Arthur had approached him and simply nodded, "I am honored to serve, your majesty."  He glanced back up at the still broken Euryleia, "We would be honored."

Aboard the Passelande

A medbay on a battleship was not like a hospital room, and there was precious little space for visitors. Gwydion decided to let the Baron and Irina have the space closest to their family member, and he stayed off to the side, out of the way. Cleaned up, wearing the uniform of a common soldier rather than a Knight, he really could've looked like anyone else aboard the ship. Indeed he did, and had to tell more than one doctor that he wasn't supposed to be somewhere else. By the time Iliza stirred, he'd fallen into a doze. Not quite a nap, as he was still too shaken up to get in any real rest. He sat up immediately when she said his name, and quickly wound his way across the room of injured to her side.

"Iliza! I'm here." At the very least he kept his voice down to try and avoid bothering anyone else, but he knelt by the bed and smiled.

Aboard the Passelande

"I imagine that it will," King Arthur answered Meara's question honestly. "But it becomes a familiar weight. Like that of a sword, or a blaster worn on the hip. Like those things it is a badge of our office," he added solemnly.

The King's face lightened considerably and he chuckled as Meara dug into her food, "Eat your fill. The Passelande is well-provisioned." Meara noticed the King had a tray of his own though he ate at a more measured pace than she did.

Once they had finished their meal, the King rose to his feet, "I am afraid I must take my leave. If you need anything, Meara, don't hesitate to find me."

The King smiled brightly and clasped Sir Brun on the shoulder, "It is I who am honored, Sir Brun. As will be your fellow Knights of the Round Table."

"I am afraid it is also my honor to make my first request of you in service to Avaluna. I don't want to withdrawl the Warhost until I am sure than the danger to other Jovian settlments has passed for the time being. The data that our efforts have managed to recover regarding the attack paint a...less than ideal picture. It seems that Callisto Station's defense systems were disabled before the attack ever occured. We must know why. I know this will be difficult without the station's logs and with the survivors now on Avaluna, but I want you to find out what you can on the matter."

Iliza was visibly relieved to see the appearance of Gwydion and held firmly to his hand firmly in hers. After a tearful reunion with those present, she continued to ask about the state of her people and the station, but the Baron only put her off by assuring her that everything was fine and that she shouldn't worry. She should only concentrate on her own recovery.

Iliza gave him a heartfelt smile, and then turned to look Gwydion. She gave the prince's hand a gentle squeeze and looked deeply into his eyes, "Gwydion, the truth, please..."

Aboard the Passelande

The Prince's smile grew wider when she asked him. The answer came after a steadying breath. His voice was still slightly strained from the battle, and he looked as though he could use a proper night's sleep, but he stayed as reassuring as he could be.

"Your father has it right. The transports all made it safely to Avaluna, and we're now aboard the King's flagship picking up more survivors. The doctors say you'll be fine, but you need rest. We're all here and safe, you see? It's going to be okay." He wasn't actually sure how okay it was going to be. An army of robots had just destroyed the home of thousands of people, and taking in so many refugees was beyond the abilities of Avaluna. There was much work to be done to get these people back to something resembling stability. But they were alive. Most of them. It was a start, and not something she had to worry about so soon.

Brun's eyes widened slowly as he processed the king's request.  He was amazed at himself.  Angry with himself.  Furious with himself.  How could he forget?  In all the running and the fighting and the battle raging across the stars....  He slammed his fist into his palm, "My deepest apologies, sire....  I already know how the defensive systems of Callisto Station were disabled.  The Lady Irina, and a technician called Rose, stumbled across it shile trying to get the stations systems back online during the attack."  Brun cast his eyes downward, bowing his head in penitence, "I had forgotten about till now...  It was House Hyle, sire.  They were the source of the code."

Re: Aboard the Passelande

Iliza looks relieved to hear those words from Gwydion and she nodded, but the weariness and worry did not entirely leave her face. Still, she lay back in her hospital bed, closed her eyes, and was soon asleep Gwydion's hand still clasped in hers.

The King's eyes widen in surprise, but only for a moment, "Sabotage. To what end?"  "Was House Hyle itself planning an attack on House Gehenmis that the Emergent capitalized on, or...could this be even more sinister?"

The King dismissed Brun's apologies with a curt shake of his head, "Nonsense. You have nothing for which to apologize. On the contrary, you have fufilled your duties even before being asked. You are either the most well-prepared knight in service to Avaluna or you have an incredible gift of foresight." The small smile playing at the King's lips made his attempt at levity apparent, but it was also not difficult for Brun to detect that the information he had given the King weighed heavily upon him.

"Since, you are indeed so efficient in carrying out your duties, Sir Brun, I have another request to make of you. Ensure that Baron Gehenmis, Lady Irina, Rose the technician, my niece and nephew, and yourself, of course, all report to the Bridge in one hour."

In a conference room attached to the Bridge you all gather. The survivors of Callisto Station present on the Passelande, plus King Arthur and MerLN via holoprojection.

"Thank you each for coming. Forgive me Baron, Lady Irina, for taking you away from the bedside of your loved one," his eyes meet the Baron's, then Irina's, and finally Gwydion's. "Know that I would not do so if I did not deem this matter of the utmost importance. Sir Brun has informed me that there is good reason to believe that the attack on Callisto Station is the direct result of Sabotage. Sir Brun, would you kindly explain the situation as you explained it to me for all those present?"

Irina corroborates Brun's story once he has finished. "It is just as Sir Brun has said, your majesty. The Central Core was running code which I had never seen before--code which disabled and even damaged critical systems on the station and which aggressively resisted attempts to prevent it running. I regret to say that I was outmatched by such code, and if Sir Brun had not managed to break the encryption...I do not exaggerate when I say that I do not believe any of us would be in this room now.”

Irina takes a moment to compose herself and then continues, “I had believed that the code must be some sort of Emergent invention, but when Sir Brun managed at last to break the encryption the cypher used was a holoimage of the Coat of Arms of House Hyle. I am not mistaken in this. It was House Hyle for certain.”

“Your Majesty,” Rose speaks, “What Lady Irina and Sir Brun have said is the truth of it. Though, I might be able to add a little more. I was on duty in the Central Core at the time of the attack and several hours beforehand. Everything was just as normal until right before the attack, then systems just began to react on their own. There was no warning. Twenty seconds at most between the moment the systems went out of control and what I later learned was an Emergent attack began.”

The King had listened intently the entire time, “And no clue as to how this strange code was integrated into your central computer core? There are fail safes against such occurrences. And all three of you saw the Coat of Arms of House Hyle, correct? If such an act was sabotage then why would they sign their name to the deed? Are they so brazen? Is it possible that such a thing was planted in order to sew dissent? You'll forgive me Baron, but the animosity between your House and House Hyle is something well know even on Avaluna. Could such evidence have been planted? Perhaps by the Emergent...”

“Unlikely,” suggested MerLN. “If the MerGN-A possessed the means to remotely disable a human settlement, rest assured she would not waste the opportunity by using it on, forgive me, an inconsequential Jovian station. No, she would be at Avaluna's throat in an instant. I am not inclined to believe that the station's sabotage is the direct work of MerGN-A's forces. Although, I also do not believe that this was an ordinary attack either. The Emergent forces arrayed here displayed behaviors inconsistent with their usual modus operandi. It is my belief that they had in mind a goal in addition to the destruction of the station. What that goal is or was I am unable to conclude at his time.

Thus, we have a pair of mysteries on our hands; One: Who sabotaged the station and what was their purpose for doing so? Two: What did the Emergent want with this station and was their goal in any way aligned with the first mystery?”

OOC: I went ahead and skipped ahead to the meeting, because I thought it would save the most time. If there's anything you want to do in the next hour though, feel free to squeeze it into your posts.

Re: Aboard the Passelande

Brun listened quietly to the exchange of information after he he explained all he knew. He was still trying to convince himself he should even be in this room.  It wasn't that he hadn't done anything to earn a place, just that he was still uncomfortable with being actively involved in something greater than scrounging or fighting.  Pirate meetings just felt different somehow.

Clearing his throat politely, Brun spoke after the questions were posed, "If I may?  The image was used in the encryption of the code which disabled the station, as well as communicating with the Emergent forces.  It could be they never considered that someone might think to check for this type of encryption...."  He glanced at Rose for a moment, but decided no to delve into just why /he/ knew to check.  Then back to the group more entirely, "With no further clue, perhaps the systems of House Hyle might contain evidence useful in answering the first question.  To the second mystery.  As..."  He paused, looking to the hologram and suddenly realizing he had no idea how to address MerLN.  He made a decision and went for it, "As our distinguished ally mentioned, the Emergent forces behaved in many ways differently than Emergent forces I have faced before.  Which lends weight to the idea that, perhaps, they were being influenced by an intelligence other than MerGN-A.  Perhaps, a human intelligence has maaged to take control of at least some portion of them?  Using them as a weapon?"

Re: Aboard the Passelande

Gwydion waited for the information to be sorted out, thinking and trying to piece things together. There was a lot going on, and none of it made sense using what they expected. He nodded in response to Brun's assessment.

"There's one more thing as well. We never would have gotten a chance to fight back if Dame Scipii and Brun's team hadn't done something incredible. The Saturnine Knight accessed the communications array and programmed some kind of command into a code burst that put the Emergent into a temporary sleep mode. It's not much, but proof that humans can control the Emergent to some extent. I think Brun is right, and there are humans directing Emergent.

If it's House Hyle doing it, then putting their seal into the code may have been a way of protecting themselves from their thralls. Or, as MerLN said, it could be a way to keep us from uniting against them. There are many reasons why this could be the work of MerGN-A, but many more why that wouldn't make sense."

As the meeting moved on and those present kept looking at ways to learn more, Gwydion remembered something. He reached a hand into a pocket and pulled out the datachip, staring down at it in his palm until he realized that the room had quieted again, eyes on him.

"Oh. Um. L-Lady Iliza handed this to me as she...when the medics arrived to help. I....don't know what's on it, but it seemed very important to her that it stay safe."

Re: Aboard the Passelande

The King is quiet for a moment, "That is a disturbing notion, but one that bears more scrutiny. If there are people behind this Emergent attack whether through collusion or through some form of control, we must put an end to it. MerLN, could control of the Emergent by an outside force be possible?"

MerLN's voice took on a fanciful tone as if he himself was considering the idea as he spoke, "I am loathe to say, your majesty. Such a thing could, theoretically, be possible, but it would require the convergence of a great many factors. It is one thing to stun a man in a brawl, and another entirely to puppet him to your will. I agree this theory merits further exploration..."

The Baron's eyes go wide in surprise when Gwydion revealed the chip.

"What? How did Iliza get that," the Baron wondered aloud. "It's an old data chip of some sort. It's encrypted and we were never able to break the encryption, likely because the data has been corrupted. It was found aboard a heavily damaged pre-emergent era shuttle craft adrift in the Wreck. One of my knights, Sir..."

"Alon Sawyer, my brother," Rose finished. "He found it on patrol a few weeks before he was killed. He never told anyone else this, but he..." Rose glanced around the room cautiously before she continued. "It sounds crazy, but he claimed that a ghost led him to it."

The Baron seems surprised by this revelation too, "However, he found it, Sir Alon investigated the shuttle and found no one aboard. He was soon set upon by Emergent, however, and was forced to flee. He managed to salvage that data chip before he did so. We tried for weeks to access the data stored on the chip, but we were never able to do so. Sir Alon and a few other knights returned to the Wreck in hopes of retrieving the shuttle, but they were ambushed and killed. The chip has since been secured in the station vault. I do not know how my daughter came to be in possession of the chip, nor why she believes it to be important."

"Hmmm...most interesting...most interesting. Perhaps, I might take a look, my lord Baron?" the wizened hologram that serves as MerLN's avatar asks.

Baron Gehenmis nods, "Be my guest, MerLN, perhaps you will have better fortune."

MerLN wastes no time in getting to work, while the others await the results. His hologram suddenly goes deathly still, unmoving, frozen.

"MerLN," the King asks cautiously.

"Sire, I recommend you clear the room immediately," MerLN says suddenly.

"What is the danger," the King asks with no hint of fear in his voice.

"It's not that, Sire," MerLN responds quickly. "I believe we have located the map to the G.R.A.I.L"

As upset as she is about the whole thing, especially the implication that this attack was caused by people instead of MerGN-A, Meara remains impressively silent.  Not due to a lack of contributions inside her head (of which there are many, and most of them impolite and ultimately unhelpful), but because this is the part of being a noble that she absolutely hates.

Talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk intrigue backstabbing talk talk talk talk your shoes are newer than mine therefore I hate you and must cause your downfall regardless of how many people get hurt talk talk plot plot backstab backstab moustache twirl talk talk talk.

The fact that the people in the room aren't the ones plotting dickish things for the most minor of personal gains (or perceived gains that actually don't do anyone any good at all) doesn't matter.

In fact, she looks like she's completely zoned out from the conversation by the time the chip is presented and Rose mentions its origins.  That certainly gets Meara's attention, and she sits up attentively, leaning forward to get a better look.

When MerLN goes still and quiet, she starts to feel nervous.

When he mentions the G.R.A.I.L., however... she gets confused.

"What is so important about a map to a cup?"

Behind Meara, Freyr buries her face in her hands in a mixture of embarrassment and shame.

Re: Aboard the Passelande

Brun nodded gratefully to Gwydion as the prince offered his support of the Edge Knight's admittedly outlandish notion.  The very idea that somone had managed to take control of the Emergent was, somehow, even worse than the normal threat of the Emergent.  When the King agreed to the idea's possibility, the weight of it increased again.

But when the MerLN intelligence admitted it.  It became almost fact.  Disturbing, real, awful, fact.

He was as surprised as the rest at the appearance of the chip.  He listened with rapt attention as the history of the chip was revealed...until the mention of Rose's brother.  A twinge of guilt distracted him.  He was positive he had not been involved with the death of the knight out on the Edge, but Brun had been a part of the crews that most likely did have a hand in it.

Any positive pride he might have gleaned from his apt suggestion was crushed beneatht the weight of that sympathetic guilt.  So, for now, he kept quiet again.  Dwelling in the past.

Re: Aboard the Passelande

Gwydion hadn't heard about Rose's brother before. He actually didn't know anything about her, except that she was with Brun during the station's power crisis. The chip had a strange story behind it, and Gwydion's childish imagination drew him toward the mention of a ghost. That was being filed away in his head for later, as they had more important things to deal with first.

Even knowing they had to deal with the problems at hand, his head wouldn't entirely let it go until MerLN finally spoke up with his findings. The prince was shocked into a brief silence for a moment, then glanced to Meara before pulling himself together and speaking up again, this time in something of a hush.

"Um. Uncle? Should we...give you and MerLN a moment?" As much as he wanted to stay in the room, the AI had just asked to clear the room, and Gwydion didn't have the strength to argue after something like that.

MerLN's revelation stunned John Arthur, though he did his best not to let his astonishment show. He holds up a hand to indicate they all those present stay where they are for the moment. "MerLN, are you sure," he asks the Emergent Intelligence calmly.

"Yes, sire. There is no mistake." MerLN replies confidently.

The King gives a solemn nod and then asks, "Could this explain the Emergent's aberrant behavior? Could they have somehow known what was aboard Callisto station and have tried to claim it?"

MerLN's holographic avatar seems to ponder the question, "It is certainly within the realm of possibility. If MerGN-A knows the G.R.A.I.L still exists, then I have no doubt she would stop at nothing to possess it. I do not have to tell you, Sire, how much recovering the G.R.A.I.L could do for Humanity's survival."

"No, MerLN, you do not," the King replies. "We must secure the G.R.A.I.L. Do you have it's location, MerLN?"

"I do not," MerLN replies. "It is a map to the G.R.A.I.L, but I am afraid that deciphering it is...puzzling."

"More Encryption," the King asks.

MerLN speaks slowly trying to find the write words. His usual pedantic tone is replaced by an uncertain one. "No, Sire. Not exactly. It is...interpretive. When I decrypted the file, I...I believe I had a dream."

Re: Aboard the Passelande

This was a lot to take in, and seeing Meara's confusion, Gwydion took a few steps around to her and kept his voice down. These were serious discussions, and he felt awkward having to explain, but his cousin wasn't always the most...informed.

"My parents used to tell me bedtime stories before..." That was a bad turn, and after shaking off the gloom, he began again.

"...well, one of them was about the G.R.A.I.L.. It was a wellspring of life, a sacred artifact that could bring immortality. Many fought over it, and it was lost. I mean that's the fairy tale it became. It was a terraformer, the technology that allows lifeless worlds to grow plants and support humanity. It made Avaluna and Mars possible. If we could find such a thing, it could create enough space for all of humanity to live in peace. If it still exists, it's a treasure worth our greatest efforts." Gwydion was an endless barrel of exposition!

Gwydion's exposition spurs something in Brun.  He heard those stories as a princeling as well.  The sort of stories that pushed one to take up arms and look to the stars.  Quests.    And here was a real one.  And he was a true Knight now.

He stepped forward suddenly, "Tell us the dream?  We could..."  He got a bit nervous, glancing between royalty and the MERLN intelligence, but decided to keep going, "We could, perhaps, interpret it better.  Humans do have more experience with dreams?  And..."  He tried to stand straighter, trying to own his place here, "I'm quite good with puzzles."  The Edge Knight looked between all the participants looking either for approval of his forwardness or the signal to step back to his place.

Meara was never really one for her studies, unless the studies involved combat somehow.  This showed greatly as her eyes seemed to widen in realization when Gwydion so very helpfully explained what the G.R.A.I.L. was.  What he did not explain, however, was what it was an acronym for.

Instead of trying to contribute to the conversation in a meaningful manner, or be in as much awe as the rest of the gathered individuals at the idea that the G.R.A.I.L. still existed, she furrowed her brow and went deep in thought.  Forcing the poor, tired gerbils that power the gears in her brain for non-fighty things into exhaustion, the princess went through every combination of words she could in order to figure it out.

She was pretty sure Gerbils Raging Against Idiotic Lemurs wasn't it, though.

MerLN nodded, "Correct, young prince. Geoscape Reformation to Accomodate Inhabiting Life, a suggestive if highly unimaginative name, was the technology by which Humanity terraformed locations within the Solar System to be able to support Human life. Avaluna, Venus, Mars--all of these were reshaped by the technology. What records remain indicate that there were several more locations slated to be terraformed, but the Emergence occurred instead. In the ensuing Chaos not only was the G.R.A.I.L itself lost, but the records of its creation and how it managed to accomplish such herculean tasks were lost as well. Only it's name and the products of its work remain. It is impossible to say whether the G.R.A.I.L is itself a physical piece of technology or the name of a series of distinct but interrelated processes."

MerLN's avatar looked to Brun, "The dream? I am not certain I can adequately convey the experience, but I will try. I was adrift on a silver river, but the river wasn't a liquid. It was...a sound. A smooth sonorous tone that went on without end, but came from nowhere. It was a sound that I am unable to identify. The sensation stretched on for quite a long while it seemed. Longer than the scant few seconds that my chronometer indicates. An altogether disorientating occurrence."

Brun considered the wizened program's attempt to describe a dream for a moment.  His brow knitted in concentration and he began to pace slowly, "Immersed in a river of sound... But came from no where...  That's the trouble with dreams.  So so conflicting and strange.  You felt it was like a river, which is something that has both a beginning and an end.  You could have described it as a sea or something, but you didn't.  And, if you were immersed in something it would seem like it was coming from everywhere... So...  Concentrating on the river aspect for a moment...  A river would lead somewhere... But where?" He paced a few more steps, "Do you think that you could recreate the sound?  The tone?  Perhaps it might mean something to our experience..."

"An excellent suggestion, Sir Brun," MerLN acknowledged. "But one that may prove futile. Replicating the sound would produce something well outside the range of human hearing. I will instead begin analyzing the properties of the theoretical sound wave mathematically. Curious. Sire, I believe I have a set of Coordinates...but no idea to what they may correspond. Hmmm...most curious indeed...A puzzle without all the pieces. It is going to take some time to cross reference these coordinates with all potential systems of reference."

"Keep working on it, MerLN. In the meantime we continue with our rescue efforts. We don't leave until we're certain we've saved every life left to be saved and salvaged anything crucial to our war effort. I trust you all understand not one word must be uttered about what transpired in this room?"

Meara hadn't planned on on telling anyone what was going on because it was mostly going over her head, but she'd picked up enough to know two things.

1) It was information that could potentially save humanity.
2) She'd heard enough terms and such to know that even if she wasn't quite aware how important the information was, someone else would.

She'd have to talk to Freyr later about this.

Wait, he just said I can't talk to anyone about this.  SHIT, she thinks with a suddenly worried expression.

Re: Aboard the Passelande

Distracted by the mention of coordinates at the heart of sonic riddle, Brun almost missed the king's request for secrecy.  His affirmative nod was a little too quick as he tried to catch back up with everyone else.  He then offered, "I will, of course, be glad to assist with rescue and salvage efforts, sire.  In whatever capacity might be found for me..." Brun glanced off to the hologram, adding uncertainly, "Unless I might be of any assistance to you?"

Re: Aboard the Passelande

"I would graciously accept the help, Sir Brun," MerLN admits. It was rare for the immensely intelligent Emergent advisor to ask for help. The fact that he did so spoke immediately to his opinion of John Arthur's newest knight. MerLN and Brun, pooled their knowledge together to make some semblance of sense regarding the coordinates. They tried every method, every system, that either of them could imagine. They questioned whether the coordinates were coordinates at all. Hour after hour poured into the problem only brought frustration, despite the keen intelligence of both present. They consulted Lady Irina who, too, was at a loss.

The King finally decides to withdrawl from Jovian space once it is determined that there is no chance for potential survivors to be found any longer and the remnants of Callisto Station have degraded so badly that their collison with the moon is imminent. The terminus of the station comes with far less spectacle than one would imagine, a fittingly solemn end for the lives that were lost.

Only twenty-three lives had been saved in the rescue efforts that followed the arrival of the Warhost. The rest of the surviors were either aboard the transport ships that had been escorted to safety or were themselves the escorts. The Emergent had performed their muderous task with exactly the sort of effciency that one would expect. The death toll had yet to be officially tallied.

The Warhost returned to Avaluna with Brun and MerLN no closer to solving the puzzle of the G.R.A.I.L's Location.
