Re: Community Chat

Hey guys, welcome to the board.  I'm still getting familiar with the system, but it isn't overly complex compared to other rpgs.  I'm re-reading LOR at the moment and it is surprising how much the narrative of the text matches the mechanics of the game in terms of encumbrance, hope, skills and so forth.

One other thing that strikes me is how combat is handled, you definitely don't want to engage in it as often as you would in a hack and slash d&d dungeon crawl.

Re: Community Chat

Hi all just started reading the rules as I only got hold of the game recently. It looks really interesting and I'm happy that it makes you think before you jump into combat.

I loved the films but the battle scenes were just a little to grand standy for me. Yes the fellowship characters were trained to fight but to me the books expressed a need for stealth and cunning from the party and the fights all came as a last resort and not because they chose to fight. I think this is what the game needs to be about combat should be a last ditch decision for the party not the solution to everything.

From what you just said galadriel this seems to be the direction it goes which sounds great.... Now need to read the combat section

Re: Community Chat

Oh dang, I was hoping this was actually a game.  Oh well I guess it is a good place to get a line on one!  I have played two versions of this genre and both of them were horribly done, I hope this one is different.

Re: Community Chat

I've played the role master version and the decipher go at it but from the little I've heard and read so far this one looks to recreate the feel of the books better than the others

Well the good news is you can play around with the character creator to see what you like and you can hopefully find a GM/game here through other members as it gets larger in numbers :)

Re: Community Chat

I'm partial to bard type characters and rangers but the game is pretty flexible if you get to know how the distinctions, callings and virtues you can create just about anything you would find in dungeons and dragons for example.

The online character creator is great in that it lets you have all of those options available quickly to try on like a hat, if it doesn't fit you just put it back on the shelf and pick up another one until you get a good fit for what you envision.

Re: Community Chat

Here's a fun piece of the game, lore checks, when it comes to getting there, lore matters.  Failing a lore check adds a day to the journey for every fellowship member that fails a check!  Yikes!

When the Loremaster has determined the final length
of the journey in days and the number of tests required
to complete it, all players may check to see if their
characters know something about the lands they are
going to traverse:
All characters may attempt a Lore roll. The best roll, and
all failed rolls, are taken into consideration.
Best Successful Lore Roll
Depending on whether the best roll was a success, a
great success or an extraordinary success, the players
proceed to choose among the options presented below.
Players may choose one option on a success, two on a
great success, and all three on an extraordinary success
(note that the same option cannot be chosen more than
once).

Re: Community Chat

Jason wrote a comment about this in the templates section with regards to the fellowship each having a role to play in the success of the group.

The duty chosen for a character comes into play
when a failed Travel roll triggers a Hazard sequence.
For example, if the track disappears into a bog, the
company’s scout will be the first to stumble across it.
With the exception of the company’s guide, more than
one player-hero may be assigned the same role (i.e.
there may be more than one character acting as lookouts,
or more heroes going hunting regularly), but
normally no character may assume more than one role
at the same time (posing as the group’s huntsman AND
scout, for example). In time, players will probably assign
the various roles on a permanent basis as they discover
which character works best in each role.

Looking at the Fellowship of the Ring

Aragorn would fulfill the roll of scout (high explore) while Gandalf would be the guide (high travel) and Legolas would be the look out man (high awareness and keen sight), I think Aragon would also serve as the huntsmen because being a ranger he would have the best hunting skill of the 9.   Make sense?

Re: Community Chat

So did they drop the idea of a Loth Lorien book?  I cannot find mention of it on their website anymore?
