Re: The Warehouse District
"Up and out?" said Xavier.  "I dunno.  You ever seen the outskirts of this town at night, away from the buildings and stuff?  It's actually really cool."

Re: The Warehouse District
He flew them out to see the moonlit Texas landscape, still and quiet, with the roads a distant sight.  A coyote was actually howling in the distance.

"It's a real change of pace from the city," said  Carapace.  "I mean, the city stuff is good, and all, but it's still good to have this."

"I guess I just haven't been out of the city that much," Spell Slinger said. "Except for that family vacation to Salem...don't ask, it's stupider than you think."

"We used to live out in the middle of nowhere," said Carapace.  "...Okay, secret lab facility, but it was still peaceful to look out at the moon sometimes.  It gets really beautiful, y'know?"

"Nah, it's cool," said Carapace.  "We liked it.  It just wasn't forever, you know?  So... hey, what happened in Salem?"

Re: The Warehouse District
Spell Slinger groaned.

"My parents don't use magic, and since we have ancestors from the area (none of which were accused of witchcraft during the trails), they thought it best that I get to experience my 'heritage'."

"Seriously?" said Xavier.  "They didn't try dunking you or whatever, did they?  I mean... no, they wouldn't do that, right?"

Re: The Warehouse District
"That's good," said Carapace.  "But that's still crazy.  How are you supposed to learn about your heritage from that?  It's not like the trials would have said anything..."

Re: The Warehouse District
"Well, I guess the effort was good," said Xavier.  "So do you know anything about that part of your heritage?  Did your teacher tell you or anything?"  He didn't know what being a wizard was like at all...

"So does every generation have someone with magic?" asked Xavier.  "Or is it pretty rare?"

"I'm not sure honestly," Spell Slinger said. "All I know is that every few generations, there's no pattern there I checked, someone in the family can use magic."

Re: The Warehouse District
"Huh," said Xavier.  "So maybe it's some recessive gene thing... or maybe it's just magic."

Magic, as far as he could tell, followed its own rules.

"Now, why don't you tell me more about yourself?"

Re: The Warehouse District
"Well, let's see," said Xavier.  "I told you the really crazy stuff already, right?  About how my old man made a bunch of us kids into things to survive a nuclear war?  Most of us didn't come out very stable, and most of us couldn't pass for human... but some of them could.  So... did I tell you that I'm not an only child?"

Re: The Warehouse District
"Nah, actually, it's mostly pretty cool," said Xavier.  "I mean... well, there was one bad incident.  But I was thinking of my little sisters.  Dad clearly hadn't settled on just one idea of how to survive a war, you know?  So my sisters aren't anything like me at all."

Re: The Warehouse District
"No, no, it's not something to feel bad about," said Xavier.  "My sisters are great.  I mean, okay, they've got some... rat things going on, but it's not a bad thing.  Tons of energy, always getting into everything, curious about everything.  They're always climbing all over everything, but they're a lot of fun."
