Re: Icarus Ship
Ardens is much more mellow this time round, having thoughtfully covered himself with tranquillizer patches, so even if the hallucinations persisted, they're at least much more entertaining.

"I could probably walk the rest of the way myself," the engineer smiles happily, looking at the pretty pictures on the screens.

The scouts  can have this crazy bucket of bolts." Rutger muttered." I never  thought that waking up with a case of freezer burn would be and ATTRACTIVE option...but i'd rather take a ride in an emergency berth than this thing."

Analysis of the computer winds down.  She doesn't announce any findings but anytime someone refers to the computer as an AI or as if it is a person that has rights she is adamant about it only being an alien computer.

Dina is eager to see where they arrived and has numerous pre composed messages to send when possible.

Re: Icarus Ship
Once the patches wear off, Ardens alternates between watching the drive diagnostics like a hawk (a particularly chary hawk) and frantically interrogating the AI Hephaestus for specifications on any advanced tech that he can download onto his hand comp ... on the basis that maybe the it won't be confiscated confiscate.

Admittedly this is either a) taking optimism to new unscaled heights, b) revealing a very poor opinion of those who will be the proud recipients of this remarkable vessel and/or c) demonstrating amazing and enterprising foresight.

Re: Icarus Ship
The Icarus exited jump. It was not in interstellar space. A beautiful blue/white globe filled the forward viewer. A blue glow engulfed the ships interior.

Chris stared.

"Abandon ship! There's re-entry kits in the gear pile and we're hitting in minutes. MOVE!"

Oddly no sign of Dina, priestess or the Marines, just the original crew.

Steve grabbed his gauss rifle and ran to the cargo pile looking for the bright red escape kit crate.

Tearing it open he passes them out.

"Get inside. roll out rear hatch. Hit inflate and you'll land safely and automatically."

Chris felt ill, like his insides were dissolving in acid.

Too sick to search the ship Chris crawled into the re-entry pod and rolled out the rear hatch after Rutger.

Richard scrambles from his bunk, his face ashen at the alarm.  He grabs his biological kit and hand comp and races aft.  He looked about as he climbed into the emergency reentry kit.  "Hephastus, can you eject your core memories so that they can be recovered.

Re: Icarus Ship
Although he's exhausted the supply of tranquilizer patches and is making this jump unmedicated, this time nobody hears Ardens scream ... mostly because of the warning bells and klaxons drowning out most speech and even conscious thought.

The engineer sits stupidly before his terminal, quiet at last as he stares unbelieving at what he sees before him, responding slowly when Rutger springs into action, then much more quickly, pulling away from the ex-scout for just a second to grab his hand comp with who-knows-what-if-anything downloaded on it (with his luck, maybe he's been saddled with the specs for this suicidal jump system !) then staggers after Rutger towards the escape kits, climbing in and following the directions given.

"You've done this before ?!!!" is his second last incredulous question as he prepares to roll out of the rear hatch and pound that inflate button.

"Where's everyone goooooooone !!!!"  And out.  <THUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMP>

Re: Icarus Ship
My leg hurts.  Hard to concentrate on that when the universe is tumbling by outside, but Ardens manages to look down.  Hole in the suit.  Blood.  Heart is already beating fit to burst, but I've been shot ?!! sends a new thrill coursing through his veins. Ignore the rest of it, concentrate on that. Apply patch. He fumbles in a pocket of the Vacc Suit, fingers clumsy, but managing to get hold of a patch and slap it on his thigh. Can't do anything about it while in the suit, frak it ... apply pressure !  That'll have to do.  The engineer squirms around in the cramped space, unclipping a strap and winding it around his leg tightly before tying it off. Breathe. Pray that'll hold it. And hang ooooonnnnnn !!!!

Richard barely makes it off the ship alive as They swarm over it.  He ejects but the struggle with the endless tide of Them is terrifying.  The re-entry pack deploys properly but it seems that four of Them have made it off the ship and are riding down with him.  He can see that they are a tentacle beast, black shadow beast, amoeba beast, harpoon beast.  All are frightening and laden with menace.

Re: Icarus Ship
Rutgerwaited for everyone else to exit the ship counting them off in his head, then once he was sure the crew was away he exited the ship. The gut wrenching sensation of free fall was a rush, the fact he  was jumping out of a starship well above the sane limit of a sky dive was enough to make him clench half expecting to be roasted to dust in seconds.

He'd heard of lunatics that did orbital high dives for fun, and truth be told, after the initial fear spike, the sensation was incredible. Then the pain happened

for a moment his mind went into a half remembered fever  dream he'd had on the ship, gunshots, yelling, branches hitting him in the face...then a sharp burning pain he knew way too well, a bullet his his  side, a sharp slap, then heat.

the escape unit functioned perfectly  and soon he was hanging from his grav chute and the ground came up way too fast to enjoy the view.

Re: Icarus Ship
Eventually Ardens realises that the disturbing feeling of falling has been replaced with a disturbing feeling of bobbing up and down.  Against his better judgment he opens his eyes.  No.  Still in a frakkin' survival capsule and his leg still frakkin' hurts !  Stifling his groans of pain, he presses his helmet up against the viewport, peering outside, the rise and fall of the waves having an unfortunate effect on his inner ear ...

Re: Icarus Ship
When the pod hit the water Rutger breathed a sigh of relief and then concerned himself with the obvious question of the pain in his side He opened his suit, after activating his rescue transponder and tried to  see how he had gotten injured.

It felt like a gunshot, but he was in a bubble, in space, with no one shooting at him. Unless someone on the ship had flipped and opened fire. but there was no sign the bubble, or his suit had been holed.

Re: Icarus Ship
For a moment Robert hopes that the sudden jerk as the parachutes opened would dislodge the creatures but they were too strong.  He noted on teh simple controls that they were coming up on a surface fast.  A look through the mirror downward showed that they were headed to what looked like ocean.  Now he would be trapped in a bobbing escape pod with these things clawing at the window trying to get in.  He tightened his straps and set the safety on his pistol though it was tightly gripped.

Re: Icarus Ship
No wait ... it's not the waves that's making him feel sick.  The engineer pants for breath, feeling like he's burning up, though the capsule seems to have survived re-entry intact (and besides, had it had even a minor malfunction he'd certainly have been feeling a lot worse, but for a much shorter time).  And his hands hurt, as if he had open wounds all over them.

They were real !!

" Any ship, any station, this is Rutger chief engineer of the Scout services vessel Isokaze, Mayday, mayday. Suffered catastrophic damage. one survivor confirmed, others possible. Medical assistance required.Current position unknown, adrift in emergency escape apparatus."

Rutger keyed his radio and recorded a message loop transmitting it in the clear, and on as many channels as his unit could manage. he swiched to a general channel and began to call for any other survivors." Any crew Isokaze, reply. This is Rutger, down and safe. please respond."

Not knowing where he was, Snowy fumbled for a light source on his belt. Hearing Rutger call vibrate from the com unit, "Snowy here and down."
"Where are we and what happened to the ship?"
"Oh bugger, I must have a concussion too."

Getting the light working, he trolled through the capsule looking for a release.

" alright, snowy..stay put we don't know where we are, and whats in this water." Rutger responded looking out trying to figure out where they were. He listened to the radio, hoping to hear other voices or commercial radio traffic that might tell him if they had arrived where they were supposed to be.
