I'm taking it a little slow getting into this game as I finish reading the book.

I'd prefer not having crossover stuff right out the gate; but I'd consider allowing you to create the Moros as a Krewe member (NPC/secondary character).

If things get going on this and we are in position to take on more stories than just the main one, you would be able to play the second character.

Is that a good compromise?

Yea, that sounds good!

She can be a newly Awakened, inexperienced Mage - maybe the Krewe were actually the first to find her after her Awakening, possibly even in the Underworld, so her first real experience with the supernatural was heavily influenced by the Krewe's mythology. Later she found Mage society proper (we can say that wherever the game is set doesn't have much of a Mage population, so as to not have to worry about Consilium politics on top of Krewe politics) and is currently apprenticing under another Mage, but decided to join the Krewe as well. That way she's fairly weak, magically, to start, and if we ever want to make her a PC that can happen once she's moved on past her apprenticeship.

I'll work more on my Sin-Eater in the mean-time. I definitely have my Geist more thought out than my PC, but I'm getting there...

Can you get behind the idea of being higher XP, and just arriving into the city?

I kind of like the idea of Cleveland being a supernatural no-man's land, even for the dead and Bound. I think being from Cleveland would require too much background and explanation on why and how the Krewe had survived all this time without learning too much of the mystery.

Since you are the gearhead, I figure the RV is your characters. If you want, we can spec it out as a Memento if you choose it. Make it your guys' Scooby Van?

Hmmm... I think an RV isn't really her style, she's more a sport-bike type. I was thinking of giving her a Memento motorcycle though.

OK then, Ghostrider much? lol.

Is her bike in tow then? Were you just thinking the same powers as the Hearse in the book or something else?

Lol, a mixture of that and these two things -

I was thinking similar to the hearse, yea - definitely the Chance key, and that power seems fair and useful for it.

I don't really know the meta-physics of this, but maybe the memento is something small, like a pair of driving gloves or an ignition key. Which would allow you to use the materialize manifestation on a 'Ghost Bike' that she summons from the Underworld.

This would allow her to basically summon the bike whenever she needs it. I would still link the Chance Key to it. Have to come up with a cool ghost story on how it came to be. Thinking 'Christine', if you know that book/movie.

I tossed the idea of the RV belonging to Frank and he jumped on it. Working to make it a cool idea. Hope everyone is cool with riding in the bum-wagon! lol.

That would be pretty cool... I'll have to think about it a bit since it's a trade off between how rad it would be to summon a ghostly motorcycle from nowhere when she wants to ride it, and her ability to have a bike to be constantly tinkering with during the story...

I'm working on getting my whole concept together, I'll post it later this afternoon probably with my thoughts on the Memento included.

If it makes any difference, Frank's "RV" is going to have the Hearse's ability to drive into the Underworld. Since it can hold the entire Krewe, it makes sense.

BTW.. the 'RV' is actually an old Ambulance, called the Meat Wagon. lol.

Lol, I love it. I imagine my character is the one who has to keep it running whenever it inevitably breaks down...

I'm just going to dump what I have so far in terms of character concept here, to see if you have any thoughts - I feel like I have a good grasp on her as a character, but I'm struggling a little bit with her backstory...

The basic sketch I've been working on is that she came from a large family of gearheads - her father and uncles owned a machine shop that did a lot of work on high-performance cars and bikes, and her sibling(s) and cousins were all in the "family business". On the other hand, she, despite having helped around the business all he life, was very ambitious. She wanted to change the world, and worked really hard to get into a top-ranked college, trying distance herself from her "working-class" past in order to be taken seriously (even though her family was probably very supportive of her).

The part I'm struggling the most with is her actual death and Bargain, and how exactly it leads her to becoming one of the Vengeful. I know what it needs to accomplish - before her Bargain, she had been convinced of a very high-minded, upper-class-progressive view of making the world a better place - fundraising, "awareness campaigns", working within the system, etc. But her death needs to both accomplish making her embrace her working-class roots, and demonstrate to her that sometimes you need to burn things down before you can build something better in its place... Maybe, like, her cousins or siblings got involved in opposing some local issue, and the company that was supporting it sent some thugs to rough them up, and she got caught up in it somehow? I dunno, I'm still working on that part, if you have any suggestions I'm open to them!

Her Geist, at least, I have a better grasp on - the Black Rider is a shade of Speed and Righteous Fury, who appears as a tall, gangly humanoid clad entirely in jet-black armor. The armor is reminiscent of a medieval knight, but is made up of a bizarre mish-mash of pieces and materials: his "helm" looks like a modern motorcycle helmet but with a visor off of a medieval great-helm, he has a black iron cuirass with chainmail beneath, but motorcycle gauntlets and boots, and he carries a battered greatsword and a clear polycarbonate riot shield. He communicates only through grunts and howls of fury, as well as generally simple emotions. In general, the two of them would get along, as the Rider would only really prod her to action when he sees innocents being somehow abused, either for someone's personal gain or being unnecessarily drawn into something that wasn't their fault. The two of them tend to agree on things, save for the fact that the Rider is always pushing her toward more and more direct (and often violent) solutions to such problems.

Her Memento, I'm thinking, is the motorcycle that once belonged to a local (to her hometown) street-racer known for being a daredevil, always pushing himself to more and more extreme feats, until he was finally killed in a horrible accident. The twist of fate would be that he didn't die while doing some incredible stunt - he was just riding his bike home from work one evening and was unlucky enough to end up in the middle of a multi-car pile-up. At some point in the past, she helped his restless spirit find its rest, and was given the bike as a reward.

Since the Ambulance is going to have the Avernian Gate ability, I think I will take something akin to the ability you said before. The Memento is both the bike and the key for the bike, a simple, heat-blackened metal key. By holding the key, she can summon or dismiss the bike from the Underworld. While summoned, she can choose whether or not it exists in both the physical world and the Twilight, or if it manifests only in the Twilight (since I'm taking the Shroud haunt, I want to be able to ride it while in spectral form without it being physical). She can also choose whether to have it arrive subtly, which takes a bit longer (for example, she could have it appear around the corner in an alleyway so that it's there when she arrives, if she doesn't want people to know it's supernatural in nature), or she can have it manifest obviously if she needs it immediately, in which case it would, like, do a sick wheely out of a Gate that would open for an instant in a nearby wall, or something. I can see the latter effect costing some extra Plasm or something to use.

For minor traits, I would just say that it doesn't require fuel to run, and can't actually be shut off - as long as its manifested, it's always at least running at a low idle. It would also be an actual motorcycle, despite being in the Underworld most of the time - which I mean in the sense that she could actually tinker with/customize it as she goes.

Or, another idea I just had for the Memento motorcycle: rather than being able to choose whether or not it's physical or just in the Twilight, say that, like most Mementos, it's always sold in both - but, the bike itself counts as something "worn or carried" by any Bound riding it for the purposes of Haunt effects?

So, for example, when she uses the Shroud Haunt while riding the bike, her Geist would surround her and the bike, and both could enter the Twilight? Or use it with The Rage to attack people with the bike (which wouldn't have any mechanical effect, it would just be cool fluff)

What did she go to school for? Maybe she was a law student or accounting and that's the capacity she was helping her family's business with. Perhaps the shop was located on a piece of land that was stopping some mega-corp from building a new development.

When her father asked her to take a look at the books/legal papers while home on break, she was in the company office when the mega-corp struck. She didn't see the men who had broken in to set the place on fire until too late. They struggled with her and ultimately killed her in some bloody way, before setting the shop on fire.

During the struggle one of the men told her, 'You people should have just sold' before killing her.

How does that sound?

As for Keys. You get 2 to start and 1 key associated with every Memento.

Your personal Innate Key: Blood (Pyre Flame?)

Your Geist's Innate Key: ?

I like the new idea for the Bike. Also, I don't mind you choosing the method of its Manifestation, though to summon it as a Reflexive Action would cost 2 Plasm.

Oh, yea, I like that!

Let's say that she'd finished her undergrad degree, and was on break in the summer before starting Law school in the fall, when she was spending some time at home helping out with the books. She probably didn't even know that the corp was putting pressure on her family's business - she'd been too busy focusing on school, and her dad didn't want to give her any additional stress on top of school, so it came as something of a surprise to her - and gave her a lot of guilt, that she'd spent so much time working toward the abstract goal of fixing things for everyone while completely missing the actual, real problems facing her own family.

Then, it wouldn't be much of a jump for her, after she finished getting revenge against the thugs, then the corp, to move on to seeking out other powerful groups preying on people (or ghosts) weaker than them, especially under the guidance of her Geist...

I think I've got a name for her now too - Kathrine "Kat" DeMarco.

For keys - hers is Pyre-Flame (appropriate for her manner of death), her Geist's is Blood, and her bike Memento has Chance.

Yea, only her mom calls her Kathrine anyway.

A mechanical question - the Rage pretty much uses your "Unarmed Attack" as the base for rolls to attack with it. That would generally mean Strength+Brawl, though it also includes the ability (which I plan to use) to use your dots in the Rage instead of Brawl for making attacks using it.

Would you allow me, if I took a Brawl specialty in "The Rage", to take the Fighting Finesse merit to allow me to make attacks using the Rage using Dex instead of Strength?

For sure, that's a perfect use of that Merit.

I'd also allow you to use your dots in Rage as a substitute for Brawl for any Fighting Style Merits that use Brawl as a prerequisite. Only while using the Rage Haunt though.

Alright, I think I've got her about finished except for my Aspirations and a Touchstone for my Geist... Still thinking about those, might wait until we have the group stuff better finished before I fill those in.

You said you had suggestions for things that would fit with the opening scenario you had in mind, I'm open to them if so.

Here are some short or long term aspiration ideas.

Since Kat is a gearhead, she might want to seek out a local motorcycle shop or biker club to mingle with.

Every city has a bad stretch of highway and Cleveland is no exception. I'm sure there would be interesting ghosts hanging near 'Dead Man's Curve'.

Perhaps she will want to seek out the local street racing scene and the ghost's that follow the circuit.

Maybe she used to have a certain position  or responsibility in her old Krewe, which she plans to carry on here in a new city.

Yea, wanting to get involved in racing, especially underground stuff, should definitely be a short-term for her. I did take 1 dot of Fame (Racers) with the intent that she's already made a name for herself in that world elsewhere, so some people in Cleveland have probably heard of her already (or her family name, since good mod shops tend to be well-known over a pretty wide area, especially if they specialize in something specific).

I also think it could be interesting to have her Geist have some connection to Cleveland/whatever mystery is going on there? To tie into her Burden Aspiration and her second Touchstone, like her Geist pushed her to travel here for some reason and she wants to find out why?

The basic premise is that Samantha's (AK) character had the tie back to Cleveland and enlisted you guys to help her find a lost loved one.

This doesn't preclude your Geist from having a connection to Cleveland, but it would be a pretty big coincidence. On the other hand, perhaps your Geist has a connection with a certain organization that has a larger than normal presence in the city. That could have been the push that you are looking for.

We can design the organization; maybe a Hunter faction that was involved with your Geist's death or made things bad for it while it was a normal ghost?

Hey, sorry for the radio silence for the past week-ish, IRL's been kicking my ass lately...

I definitely like the idea of her Geist having a connection to some other organization with a presence in the city. I was already thinking that the Black Rider is probably not as old as his knightly theme might suggest - he probably died in the early-mid 20th century.

Maybe he originally died in WWI or II, and his ghost traveled back to his hometown only to be captured somehow by a Hunter group - maybe a Cheiron Group division is active in Cleveland, and was using its connections in the military to collect the anchors of the ghosts of servicemen who's bodies and possessions were being sent back home, so that they could try and capture and experiment on them? The experiments likely failed, but their failure destroyed his anchors and forced him into the Underworld. The anger toward what he would see as continued betrayal and injustice on him and others by those more powerful (he was an idealist when he joined the army, thinking he was going overseas to defend the innocent from injustice, but the horrors of war wore him down until he was finally killed, and then even in death, his body and spirit were treated like a mere tool to use, and his ghost was denied any chance to seek resolution).

I can get behind that. No guarantees that your Geist's enemies are still in the city or even their organization; but that wouldn't stop your Geist from pushing you to go along to find out.
