The Smoke and Haze

It is one of the peculiarities of mortal fashion that the old should, for a time, become new again. Be it nostalgia, or reactionary politics, or a simple fascination with times of yore, people cannot seem to stop themselves from digging up the past and wearing it like a costume. One particularly odd version of this is the movement known as steampunk, which draws upon the aesthetics of Victorian England and ties it up with hyper-industrialism and the mad science of pulp horror, creating something strange and new.

The Smoke and Haze is built around this aesthetic, with the walls lined by copper pipes and steel gauges, occasionally spewing smoke from carefully placed cracks and valves. The tables are solid oak with curved legs, and the seats are patterned with golden floral print. The dance floor is marble, built for high traffic, and the sound system blares from massive brass horns. The lights are perpetually dimmed, and there are plenty of dark corners for ladies and gentlemen who wanted to get a bit more friendly than might be appropriate in the light.

And upon each table, a single crimson poppy flower sits, basking in electric candlelight.

Re: The Smoke and Haze
Not wanting to compromise Daniel's Bar, Michael walked back to his home and took his own car to the Smoke and Haze. If the cleaners didn't deal with Ward's car, he'd have to do it another time.

The young Mekhet walked into the establishment and took a look around, smirking at the unusual setting.

"Knock Knock?"

Re: The Smoke and Haze
Daniel was sitting in a booth, a glass of something red sitting in front of him. The lighting is dim, but Daniel's red suit sticks out amongst the brass and wood decor. "Welcome, Mr. Bennett," he says, swirling it around. "Feel free to take a seat, unless you wish to go now," he says, motioning to a seat across from him in the booth.

OOC: Do I just keep the same Vitae total from the previous scene?

Michael shakes his head, and takes a seat across from Daniel.

"No, I want to get to the bottom of this, but rushing it's probably going to get me killed. Besides, you may have information that I need. Dylan said you were there the night Tanya's sire disappeared?."

"I was, but I fear I cannot tell you all that much- when I wasn't distracted by some Ventrue's brainwashed ghouls, I was fleeing from the burning house in absolute terror. It's quite embarrassing, actually, as I had hoped to be able to help more, but once the bomb went off, the pooch was already good and well screwed."

"If you want, though the place was swarming with cops, last I checked. Also, I wouldn't be shocked if it were being watched by our foes; unless you can conceal yourself, staying away might be advisable." Daniels smiles. "And besides, Mr. Bennett, you've barely begun this interview. Aren't you curious how I knew the assailants were ghouls, or that their regnant was Ventrue? Don't you want to know about the bomb or our enemy's armaments? Or how about asking me why I was at the house in the first place?"

"I mean, really," he says, holding the glass in his hand and swirling it about, "I know I'm a charming fellow, but you ought to be a bit more suspicious of your Kindred." Daniel takes a sip of the red liquid, which, upon closer examination, appears to simply be a glass of wine. "Mmm, there are some pleasures of the flesh that I miss so. But it's worth the blood to have a taste of what we once had, isn't it?

Re: The Smoke and Haze
"Well, it all started in this little hamlet out in... oh, I suspect you want something more specific?" Daniel says, taking another sip.

"Here, let me make this easy for you: I am a primarily apolitical man who, due to the volatile political situation here in the city, has been forced to become an active member of the Carthian Movement. I was at the house because Councilor Morgan asked me to check in on them, and the bomb that destroyed the house was wired up to a brainwashed ghoul. Took out the bomber and six Carthian enforcers, the poor fools."

"These were not run of the mill ghouls, either. Each one was dressed in tactical gear, armed with assault rifles with custom wooden bayonets and some good old-fashioned Willy Pete. That's white phosphorous, in case you're not familiar with the lingo- burns white hot, and can do a number on a vampire who gets it on him. The conditioning done on them was rather thorough- they never spoke once, and their self-preservation was minimal. They were extremely tough- I suspect they'd been bestowed a measure of Resilience, on top of everything else. Hence, Ventrue."

"Now, investigator, do you have any actual questions, or am I going to keep interviewing myself?" he said, grinning like a fool.

Michael Chuckles.

"I'm a journalist, not a P.I. But if I were I'd maybe ask at what time did you arrive at the house? What was the situation like when you arrived. What kind of bomb was it? Who were the Carthians that were killed?'

Michael cracked his knuckles.

"What resources are necessary to produce or purchase Wiley pete?"

Daniel paused briefly before asking a final question.

"And how did you escape?"

Re: The Smoke and Haze
"A journalist is an investigator, boy, the difference is that the journalist has to go and brag about it." He chuckles.

"It was only an hour or two after dusk, so... 8 PM or so? And when I arrived, the situation was tense, but still relatively calm. Mr. Devitis and his childe were holed up in this bunker they had in the basement- converted from an old fallout shelter, I think. There were two other cars there- one belonged to Ms. Morgan, I think, and the other was the van where the bomber came from."

"I went to go warn Mr. Devitis, and perhaps try to attract the attention of the enemy myself, but I was unable to stop the bomber. He came out of the back of his van carrying two large duffel bags, and his face was concealed by one of those hockey masks- he didn't respond to me and he was barely slowed down when I tried to wrestle him to the ground. I noticed he had a wire going from one of the bags up his sleeve- a dead man's switch, I suspect. We were surrounded by six young Kindred who were acting as guads- I fear I do not know their identities, as I have only been in the city a month, and had not the time to meet them- who were all sadly slain when the bomb went off. We were just outside of the Devitis residence, and it destroyed a significant portion of the front of the house. I would have died, too, if my old self-preservation instincts hadn't gotten me away in time."

"I do not know what 'kind' of bomb it was- I am not an expert in demolitions or EOD, so all I can tell you is that it was powerful enough to tear through the front of the house like tissue paper. As for the WP, I can't really tell you much, except that it burns bright and hot and makes a lot of smoke- it was first used back in the Great War in grenades, but I think it's restricted in combat use under some international treaty or another. I'm not sure how common it is, but I'm sure it's not outside the realm of possibility for a particularly connected Kindred to outfit his allies with WP rounds."

"As for how I escaped? I am ashamed to say it was the old-fashioned way. The explosion set the house ablaze, and I was not able to maintain control of my Beast after the fire got strong enough. So I ran until I couldn't see the fire anymore." He shrugged. "Sorry I don't have some daring escape plan involved- sometimes, it's just one's own two feet that act as savior."

In reply to Daniel Flanders (msg # 12):

Michael sat quietly while listening to Daniel's story.

"So, we've got two missing Carhians, six dead ones... or were the guards Carthian?, and one who went berserk on Dylan at Widdershins. Someone skilled at Dominate is involved, most likely a Ventrue because of the resilience of the ghouls. They're wealthy and well-connected enough to get a hold of explosives and Wily Pete. Does anyone in the Domain fit that description?"

"I did mention I've only been here a month, yes? I've barely met a fraction of the vampires in the city, but- wait, did you say Dylan was attacked at Widdershins?" Daniel groaned. "I swear, couldn't we have a phone chain of some kind or something so I can keep in the loop about this."

"Also, a bit of a tip: don't say Willy Pete so seriously, you've not got the accent for it. White phosphorus or WP will suffice."

Re: The Smoke and Haze
"You're a funny guy, Daniel. And just because you've only been here a month, doesn't mean you don't know anyone."

Michael smirks a bit.

"It sounds like either Carthians are being either specifically targeted in whatever's going on, or are being used... or both. Ward attacked Dylan in Widdershins in response to an attempt from Dylan to dominate him. And then he was killed and turned into some sort of tentacle monster. It was pretty gross."

Michael bit his thumb for a bit as he thought.

"Do you know if the Devitis household explosion was covered up in an way, or were the police allowed to handle it normally? I may be able to get some info from them if they haven't had their minds wiped or reports tampered with."

"If they haven't been tampered with already, I'd be shocked," Daniel says. "Unless the people in charge of this city are complete blithering incompetents, they've already got a story going about a gas leak or radical militia or some such things."

Daniel raises an eyebrow. "Now... what was that you were saying about a tentacle monster? Because frankly, that's far more worrying than a few Dominated ghouls."

Re: The Smoke and Haze
"If that's the case, then the best option would be to go to the house, but it's not the safest. I could also talk to this Tanya person."

"As for the tentacle... thing, I don't know. Ward died, and a tentacle appeared out of his neck-hole. And when they killed THAT, he exploded and his blood burned everyone around... fortunately, I had gotten away from the area by then."

Daniel is silent for a moment. "I must say, in my hundred or so years on this Earth, I have never heard a story quite like that. It sounds, however, like we're dealing with far more than just a few rebel vampires."

"And you are correct, the best possible option right now is to find Ms. Tanya. If nothing else, her connection to her sire may give us an edge in finding him."

Re: The Smoke and Haze
Daniel shrugged. "You're seriously overestimating my connections to this city, Mr. Bennett. I have maybe a handful of phone numbers for other Kindred in the city, and Ms. Tanya's is not one of them. Her residence is, obviously, not going to be helpful either."

He thinks for a moment. "Last I saw her, Ward was trying to drag her off somewhere. The man was positively obsessed with her sire, for reasons beyond my understanding. If one of the other people you were with do not know where she is, perhaps Mr. Ryke will? If not him, then Ms. Morgan likely knows how to get in touch with her, as she was the one who originally directed me to the Devitis household."
