Re: Apotheosis Drive X

Anyone here have this? I picked it up recently, looking for a Mecha fix. It's rough around the edges, a bit poorly organized and a little lighter in actual rule content than I was expecting, but there's some good, good stuff in here. A second read through (the background takes some piecing together, but is very cool) has me thinking about running a game...

Re: Apotheosis Drive X

I have seen a draft of ADX, but nothing that polished.

Love much of what I saw, scads of potential certainly.

Re: Apotheosis Drive X

I'm now running a solo ADX game for a pal here on RPOL. And wow -- loving Fate for mecha combat. Extremely cinematic. At one point, the heroine (in her space-born mecha) was being chased by a bunch of homing mines, and she declared that she was going to try and lose them by heading for an old derelict space station, cutting her way inside and taking cover there. We were able to model that just using Succeeding with Style -- she succeeded with style on the 'cut your way in' roll and simply created a 'take cover!' boost that she was able to tag when it came time to make her defense roll against the mines. Too cool.

Re: Apotheosis Drive X

That story packs a little more punch when you know that the Derelict Station was an enemy with Stress and Consequences of its own.  Otherwise someone just ends up thinking "Why didn't she just Create an Advantage?"

I am enjoying Apotheosis Drive X myself, but rough and unpolished certainly does apply.  In the copy I've got, none of the page references are actually filled in and there's some question as to what, exactly, buffing one's Weapon Systems actually does.  It plays pretty quick though, which is a boon since there's already plenty of crunchy mech games out there.

Also, not sure why the game abbreviates itself #ADX as though it were a Twitter hash tag.  It's unexplained, but consistent, throughout the book, on the playtest put on Youtube, and in the various interviews.

Re: Apotheosis Drive X

I've traded messages with the author, who says the bigger de-luxe version is coming, along with the companion I'm forgetting the name of. Hopefully the page references and whatnot will be address in that version.

I used to love crunch in my mecha games (Battletech, Heavy Gear, Jovian Chronicles, Mekton Z), but my entire gaming mindset has been firmly in the direction of 'simplify,' and it's getting stronger and I approach the great beyond. ADX (refuse to twitterify it) really does play faster than any other mecha game I've tried, at least so far. We'll know more as I continue to try and kill your character, Jack. =]

Re: Apotheosis Drive X

Yeah, I know the HD Edition is in the works, as well as Apotheosis of the "Rose: Princess Drive", I'm even looking forward to them.  Thing is, when someone slaps a price tag on something, I kinda expect a finished product.  At first blush, I really thought someone had messed up and given Drive Thru the preview materials for Kickstarter Backers or something.  That kind of thing tends to shake my confidence in a company ...

I do love my crunchy games, but I'll happilly admit that you need players who are as willing to engage with the crunch.  That said, this is a FATE sub-forum, so I'll leave the pros and cons of such systems to other venues.

In the name of generating some conversation, how terraformed do you think Mars is in setting?  They don't really talk about it very much beyond stating that it is colonized, but that could mean anything from linked arcologies to a blue, breathable atmosphere over a lifeless red wasteland, to even a primordial largely unsettled wilderness complete with geneengineered flora (converting the methane heavy atmosphere to something more nitrogen enriched) and fauna.

(Pft, doncha know Harry?.  Even in death, I still serve ...)

Re: Apotheosis Drive X

I don't know much about the author / company behind ADX, other than I *think* it's a small press husband & wife team. It was a Kickstarter project, and I think a fairly cash-strapped one though they got enough funding for a couple of stretch goals if I remember correctly. (Like many Kickstarters, it seems, I found it *after* the funding drive was done...)

Long story short, I'm not totally surprised by the rough edges, but it'll be disappointing if the other materials don't surface and the core book doesn't get another going over.

In my (our) particular version of the setting, I'm seeing Mars as a collection of domed cities / linked arcologies. For one thing, that limits the real estate available for settling, making it more significant that Mars offered up some of that space to the Commonwealth. (Again, in my alt history version.)
