Fate Training Grounds 1 - Setup & Discussion

Setting up a thread for OOC-type discussions with The Bane, to help show him/her the ropes in a few simple FAE scenes.

First up, let's get your character set up. I have a very simple scenario in mind, but may adjust it based on the type of character you're looking to play (sneaky vs. fighty, etc.).

You okay with generic fantasy to start? Think warrior / wizard / rogue / cleric type stuff. If so, I'm thinking you're in a human town on the north edge of civilization, a rough and tumble place where adventurers find work aplenty...

Re: Fate Training Grounds 1 - Setup & Discussion

Since we're looking at using FAE, character generation should be pretty quick. Not sure if you need help with this part of it, but really you're just looking to create your High Concept and Trouble aspects, a third aspect of your choosing, then your approaches (one at +3, two at +2, two at +1). Let's leave aspects 4 and 5 to be defined in play, and I can go either way with the stunt -- define it up front, or wait and define it while playing during an appropriately dramatic moment. Oh, and you need a name. =]

What else?

Possible format for your character sheet:

Name
High Concept Aspect:
Trouble Aspect:
Aspect 3:
Aspect 4: TBD in play
Aspect 5: TBD in play
Stunt: TBD

Approaches
Careful +
Clever +
Flashy +
Forceful +
Quick +
Sneaky +

Gear
Quick listing of armor, weapons, equipment, etc. Since this is FAE it won't really affect the die rolls, but it's good to know for color.

Current Status
Fate Points: 3
Refresh: 3
Stress: [ ] [ ] [ ]
Consequences:

Can I still get in on this? I am in Atmo's game, but a quick tutorial could not hurt.

Re: Fate Training Grounds 1 - Setup & Discussion

The Bane was looking for a solo or duo gig, so one more should be fine -- but only if you're okay with us going slow and kind of dissecting things. No stupid questions, that kind of thing.

Sound okay, Bane?

I must have misread, no worries. I can learn it well enough from reading it play out.

Re: Fate Training Grounds 1 - Setup & Discussion

Your call, Merevel -- but in re-reading my reply, I want to make sure my intent was clear. In writing, "No stupid questions," I meant "There ARE no stupid questions, we'll be talking about anything that comes up," *not* "I don't want any stupid questions!"

Just in case I came off as rude about that. :)

Re: Fate Training Grounds 1 - Setup & Discussion

Great! Glad to see this appear.

So, initially I was just gonna pop together a character so we could have at it. But I had a question even before I got that far.

Is it usually character creation then setting, or setting first? I mean I could make a character and then we could discuss setting, I guess that's feasible, but say I assumed a genre and make one of my Aspects contain a race. Without a setting I am saying this race is 'a thing' if I add it into an Aspect. Something to be compelled or invoked. But how or why?

Not that I think a GM/you would do it to me, but say I wanted to play using an Elf aspect - as an example - then I have imposed a Genre and a Race. I realize it is collaborative (narrative) storytelling but I don't know what the setting holds for Elves. The GM could say great, but be thinking, 'I hate dandelion eating Elves' or something similar. Then throw a Setting Attribute covering how Elves are despised throughout the lands. Now I have two Aspects that Compel against me and play is not how I envisioned playing an Elf would be...

Too, I realize I may have more flexibility here than elsewhere on the forums. Your tailoring it to fit my noob-ness, but 'Looking for Players' is full of threads wanting Players for a specific setting. So, long winded post aside, should we discuss setting first, or characters? How is it done FtF?

Dang, sorry, I probably am making this much harder than it needs to be, but figured I'd ask. If you want Character first, I can surely come up with something today...

Thoughts?

PS - Merevel, I really don't mind one more, and it might help figuring our how to lash Aspects to another PC, but as you can see from above - I have realized that FATE is a whole new way of thinking about RP, at least for me. So, I'm gonna probably be slower than dirt.

Re: Fate Training Grounds 1 - Setup & Discussion

Psh, slower then dirt? I am in 7 games, learning fate. Playing multiple games on my pc. As well as a job. And trying to watch some anime.

So yeah >.> call me Joe :-)

Anyhoots. Since it is ok with you. I will give you first dibs on character types.

And from what I can tell from other fate games I have tried to apply to: They generaly start with a concept for a character. Build the world, then refine the character. Correct me if I am wrong of course!
