Yes, you can throw a dagger.

As for interacting with others through initiative... well, it depends on what the interaction is. Conversation wouldn't normally be affected by initiative.

Nixon, of course, is not fighting the bugbear but the wraith in a different area...

Unless he really hit the wraith so hard that there was bleed through or trample damage.  ;)

Ahhh the bloody bugbear managed to nick me by 1 point, but hooo boy does it make me feel a live when I interpose and save some low hp party members. Although I do wonder what happened to my magic missile damage. Am I just missing the post that included it?

Short resting is a good plan.

Having a magical weapon (if it is indeed magical) v. potential other mundane-resistant foes seems well, well, well worth the time as well :)

Apparently Yondalla really likes it when people call on her for aid, even when they're only pretending to worship her...  Maybe I should actually start worshipping her.  Maybe that's what Yondalla was going for, playing the long con of, "They'll fake it until they make it."

I was going to get the shoes with the curved toes with a bell at the end but sadly they didn't carry my size.

There is a large, serious lawyer in our area that wears the leprechaun shoes.  So terribly hard to not chuckle.

I was keeping track of damage on a note pad, and as near as I can tell, Ezguar's Magic Missile spell was calculated into the damage on bugbear #3--the one Mithra was fighting.

I do remember taking it into account, as he named each Magic Missile! I just missed posting it up.


As for Mithra, she entered the mine down 11 points after her fight with the Orcs outside and after a rest to recover some.

She took two hits from the bugbears, each for 11 points of damage, so she's currently sitting at 3 hp. Is that how you've got it, Mithra?

DM, are we to presume ID'd materials are discussed/relayed in detail, or not?

I.e. - Should Nixon say, "Yup, gimme dat der magicked mace" or "Yo, Ero, f'snizzle m'nizzle - what's the dealio on the bugsquatters?" and post accordingly?

ahhh see I'm just used to games were it benefits my rolls to be private so gm can make rulings as they see fit without others being upset at rolls.

When I lie to you all or try to hide something, I usually roll for it and post those, so then you other players can figure out whether your character would care, or how they'd react, etc.
 I figure this game won't go long enough for me to try to keep something secret for a big reveal in a year, so I might as well put most cards on the table on, although I do have a big secret that I'll reveal if this game goes for a year... ;)

Vic, although I, as a player, would love to use a magicked weapon over mundane, it made more sense IC that he would yield it to Vic... also as new(er) guy in our group, it's a poor salutation to the existing party to swan in and take the only magical weapon.

Sadly the armour's a downgrade, and the spellbook's not going to help me either.

On the positive, it was a great couple rooms for you and Ero, so go team! :)

I do know that keeping the two groups in same thread has been distracting, especially since we are all not labelling our posts by group. I am still in and am sorting it but it is not easy.

It seems like the mace and the armor might better fit members of the other party, but at least the mace is a slight upgrade for me, and even more when facing undead.

Good point. Presumably, if one wizard is sending the Message to another wizard, the receiving wizard would know he can reply. I suppose, though, anyone with Knowledge (arcana) or Spellcraft would likely know that. Otherwise, it would be something included in the message.

Since Ezguar doesn't know Victor yet, he would have included something like 'I can hear a 3-second reply.'

The spell description doesn't put a limit on words, probably because it depends on how fast you speak and what language you are using. However, the duration is 1 round. So whatever you can say in 6 seconds... or 3 seconds if you want a reply.

That seems rather absurd. Admittedly, it's meant to be a short message, rather than an entire speech, but, still. Nor does it offer any guidelines for how long it can take the receiver to reply. I don't think it breaks the rules all that much if I expand the duration to two minutes for the original message and add in two minutes for the reply. Nor does it seem unreasonable if the receiver can feel the time ticking away while he tries to think of what he wants to reply.

So, to answer Victor's question, yes, he knows he can whisper a reply that the sender will receive, but he only has 12 seconds to respond.

Oof this has been a rough month for me... Sorry about my reply being as slow as it was but I have been keeping up and I'm glad we finally rejoined the other party!!!! Now things will get a bit more interesting and less complicated/split.

That's RL for you. Just when you think things have straightened out, another curve and another bump suddenly appear.

Anyway... I was working on a map, but got busy, plus I don't have quite the right program to work on maps (particularly to fix existing ones), so it took longer than it should have or I thought it would.

So, the map should be up soon.

The blue areas are water.

The green areas are parts that the group has been through.

The sections in the upper left and in the center are speculation based on what you have seen and heard. It probably isn't completely accurate, but it's probably close enough.

Small question: I'm having a bit of a hard time keeping up with where everyone is. Is Victor and Thressa's group's conflict happening nearby Mithra and Vilderhardt, or is this a different section of the mine?

Everyone is together now. Vilderhardt and Mithra are checking the rooms in the bottom center of the map. Above them is a roughly diamond-shaped cave where most of the others are 'waiting'. Across from the cave is a passage that leads to a door to a room--that's where Victor and Thressa are.

I totally forgot about the 'Game Map' part of the RPol toolbar. So few games I've been in have used it. My bad, DM. Thanks for the clarification.

I wound up getting busier with Christmas than expected, and then just when I was getting over my burnout and starting to get caught up on my games, I lost internet connection for 4 days. Finally got caught up.

I think at this point since we have so many new players that only have a vague understanding of what is happening that either a leader of the group or the DM should post bringing us together so that we can sort things out. I honestly have no clue who is still here or not or what we are doing there beyond saving some Dwarves.

New players should only play based on what they know anyway ;) But yes, conclusion of movements from an authority would be nice. I'm in no rush, though.

Thressa, is your character suffering a 4th wall break or psychotic episode, or are you metagaming? Any of the three are concerning. People are going to spell/remember things wrong, it's a normal part of the game. You can assume the characters hear and pronounce your name properly unless they are being obviously derisive. And I think something like "Wildfire" or another more obvious play on her name would work better for that purpose. People in every facet of my life get "Prizzard" wrong, usually on purpose, and rhyme it with wizard, lizard, etc, or even call me "pizza". Character names don't get the respect real names do, and even real names aren't well-respected in other cultures. One guy I work with is referred to as "Sam Saladbowl" because these rednecks can't pronounce either part of his name.

Flamme is a spelling that indicates light from a fire source not the fire it self.
The name has never been Wildflame I have always spelled it Wildflamme on purpose. Everyone keeps misprouncing it.

I searched the word and only got: French. Translation: Flame. But that doesnt matter.

Please read my previous post again. But if you prefer a tl;dr version: People are going to screw up names, especially spelling them correctly. Assume this is not malicious. Your character cannot hear their spelling mistakes and as a player this should be one of the least-frustrating things you experience in D&D.

Also, I was waiting on the consensus RE: taking the dwarves home before further exploring. Three party members suggested getting them out of here first, then one began planning an assault on the Skull, then another said the vote was clear, and went straight into acting as if the vote went for heading straight after the skull.

As there are more of us yet to chime in, and I've seen no sign of the DM, I figured I should wait before posting. If no one objects within a timely manner, I see little reason not to proceed with Mithra's plan. But if anyone has dropped out in the meantime, we could just say they are escorting the dwarves home.

Lureene, Victor, and Cunaar seem to be authorities on a kind here and all seemed to prefer destroying the skull first, so it seemed the vote was clear on destroying it first. We don't exactly have to haul the dwarves into the fight, they could be guarded here, healed and left, whatever. As for Victors question I was also waiting on anybody else to answer.

I did word it a bit incorrectly at first, but then decided he hasn't seen enough of this group fighting to really knom better. Heinrik makes it pretty obvious though.

Perception, Arcana, and Investigation. Does any character practice these skills? PM me if so, there may be some RP to be had!

Nearly back in business. After consulting with the local computer repair store, the options were get a replacement screen for the newer laptop computer for $150-200, buy an external monitor + adapter for $75, replace the keyboard on the older laptop for $100, or buy an external keyboard for $25. The first option is almost the cost of a new computer. The only option I can afford at this time is the last one. So, now I've got a new keyboard. It's still a pain, as I need to use the touchpad on the laptop, and it'll take getting used to where the keys are on this one.

I'll probably order a new computer online via a credit program, in which case I'll be paying for it for the rest of my life. At least they're deferring payments until August.

When I typed up the previous post, I had no idea I was going to be able to solve the problem this quickly. I'll still need to pull the digital hard drive out of the old computer and add it to my stack of external hard drives. Must be a box or something I can put them all in.

Your local shop is an absolute ripoff. I could buy a cable and monitor locally for $10, laptop screens are often $50 or less and mihht take up to 30 minutes to replace, laptop keyboards vary more but run dirt cheap usually for older models and might take 10 minutes to replace. That markup/labor is ridiculous.

For us electronically challenged, I'm not so sure replacing the laptop screen is all that easy.

I suppose it would be possible to find a cheaper monitor if I looked around the area, but don't quite have that flexibility on top of the pandemic. Besides, it'd wind up being very awkward to hold it on my lap.. Anywhere else would have been a pain, as well.

A mixed up week.

So, my backup laptop is on the TV tray in front of my recliner, the external keyboard is on my lap, and the mouse and mouse pad on the cutting board is 'balanced' on the left arm of the recliner. I still keep trying to use the touchpad on the keyboard that isn't there.

Every time I have to get up, the mouse/pad gets moved to the arm of the adjacent sofa, and the keyboard gets stood on end next to the TV tray.

Pain in the arse juggling game. Plus, the old laptop is smaller and slower. Keyboard keys are all in the wrong places... AND it's too long, and I don't even use the right half of it.

Sometimes the cat decides he needs to sleep in my lap... and I just don't have the heart to chase him off.

I had to buy an adapter cable to connect up my friends 'extra' monitor to my newer laptop (with the bad screen) so I could get files out of it.

Was also a bit under the weather this week. Not CoVid-19... just a bit tired.

Victor is out of the long reach of the ogre, which is why the ogre didn't attack him and the others. He would have had to move to attack Victor, so, one way or the other, he would have to move to attack someone (unless they came to him), but he had to decide to attack either Victor's group or Ero's group. Since it was Ero's group that had attacked him, he chose to go after them. After all, Victor's group hadn't hurt him... yet.

So, the ogre is out of Victor's reach but Victor can move to engage the ogre.

FYI, I am not making a claim on the gauntlets (which I am guessing are gauntlets of ogre power) although I’m happy to have them!  I suspect our nice DM has a magic item in mind for each of us, looking at the haul we found.

Okay, I’m happy to claim the gauntlets and the mace (if nobody else wants it).

If nobody claims the horseshoes I will take them too. I assume we need to find a smith to affix them to a horse anyway, so for now they are redundant anyway. If one of you gets a horse and wants them then take them, otherwise I may well get them fitted to Draxus, though he is no warhorse.

Regarding the cash, are we just going to divvy up between us? If so then each player can decide what to do with their share. I’m happy to do the maths, how many active characters are there? I count 9 PCs and 1 NPC (Cunaar). What about Charoum? Is he with us?

From my perspective I am happy you having the horseshoes. If I ever get a mount it will either be a riding dog or a war ram type mount.

I am happy having the cape and hat. Being a rogue it defeats the purpose of having the chime, but happy to hang onto it and if no one wants it, next time in town maybe trade it for some other magical item.

As for gold, happy to divvy up

From what I can see, Ero and Lureene haven’t claimed anything... time to speak up guys or you’ll get nothing!!!

I'm not actually claiming the ring, I figure somebody more frontline-oriented would want that. An item per person seema fair and, if the party votes to try  we can search for the proper owner while using them. If we can't find the owner or don't bither, we can sell the leftover items and split that wealth among the party after we're all satisfied with our item of choice.. Yea, may as well mention everything I'm thinking here rather than acting it out slowly for the party. After splitting the items we can fast-track to a vote and then get moving.

Agree with that. In practical terms it is best to allocate items to those best suited to use them, then try to sell redundant items and split the proceeds. You will never be able to give everyone an exact share, but as long as it is reasonably fair them it is normally okay.

Happy to try to find the owners of the items, but I suspect their bones may be scattered around here somewhere...!

As Victor implied, I don't think we should worry too much about who gets what until we know what everything is.

No, you're not using too much OOC knowledge. If these item are 'standard' magic items, then tales of them have been told for centuries. For example, who hasn't heard of a magical Bag of Holding? All the evidence indicates that's what it is.

In the case of the horseshoes, if they are Horseshoes of the Zephyr, they don't let a horse fly, they just let him run about 4" above the ground... or water. They can be affixed to any animal that has hooves, but don't have to be nailed on. They kind of stick like glue.

Also, the gauntlets are a reasonable guess.


And, no, the items aren't specifically targeted for certain characters, particularly since the list was made before two of the characters joined.

It is realistic that there might be items (msgic or not) that won't be used much or at all. The illusion based hat I assume is a hat if disguise, and though may be handy, when in a ruin not so much....but in town when spying or hiding, ooohhh, baby!

Likewise the chime people are assuming is a chime of opening. As a rogue coming in, I have skills for opening stuff so hopefully won't be needed, BUT may for circumstances.

For items not used, we may find a merchant that really wants it  or better yet, a church who will take it in trade for healing, etc.

Sounds about right. In my (hiatus'd) IRL game, my barbarian has the best perception score in the party, as his WIS is only second to the cleric's, and she's not proficient. Our Rogue (or his player) doesn't seem to know how to use Thieves' tools, either, so I'm in charge of traps and doors, as well!

To clarify, my character is called Willem. His title is Grey Willem, but it is not an honour like Sir or Lord. It is more of a cursed title. Friends and companions will call him Willem, members of his order will refer to him as Grey, and refuse to use his name.

Two things-

Identify - gauntlets, mace, horseshoes, in that order please, but no hurry on any of them.

Loot - there was some coins and treasure on the ogres, who took it? I think we can assume someone did. If so are there coins to be divvied up, or are we trusting someone to hold on to it all for now?

Nyssia has one pouch of coins, Krivcrath has the other, and Krivcrath is also carrying the bag of holding with the other three pouches.

The coins can be divided up in camp.

So, just to clarify, the basic coin is 6gp,11sp and 8cp EACH.

Jewelery, gem and statue worth in total 168gp (roughly).

And that's the non magical stuff.

So the jewelery roughly get 15gp worth each.

Reading the description of the Mace of Disruption, I assume that against normal enemies it is just a normal mace with no addition to attack/damage rolls, albeit a magic weapon that will hit creatures only affected by magic weapons. It only does extra damage against fiends and undead. Is that right?

Also, did Ero manage to get more info on my gauntlets?

Not this time. The two wizards could only identify 8 items. Since the gauntlets were probably Gauntlets of Ogre Power and therefore not particularly needed at this time, they were passed on for the other items. Same for the Bag of Holding.

On the subject of XP, I find it somewhat of a pain in the butt to try and keep track of XP for all the characters, even if the players do it themselves.

The premise of encounters is that one encounter is supposed to be an easy to moderate effort. And, depending on the track, it should take 3-5 encounters to progress a level. Rather than crunch numbers, if I'm doing it right, 3 major encounters should be the equivalent of a level. Also, I use 2 minor encounters equals one major encounter.

The ogres were only a minor encounter because of the large number of PCs--about twice what a normal party was. Additionally, a single ogre wouldn't have been a challenge for the Average Party Level.


Yes, only Willem and Prizzard have horses.

Just to let people know that I've made a few changes to Nyssia. While the sassy female gnome is basicly the same, there are some major differences.

The kick ass assain, poison wielding rogue is gone, and now she is a bard. This is for both personal reasons as well as the need formal mire supportive role over a damage dealing skill person.

Thanks yo starmaster for allowing it.

So now she still has the skills, able to open locks and pick, but can also inspire, cast some spells (not the calibre of sorcorer or wizards, but great supporting spells) and such.



On a side note, if no one has claimed the gloves of climbing and jumping or the chimenof opening, may I claim them (as enhancements for my skills)

As long as we figure out which ones are magical, its probably not worth carrying most of them around. Anything worth buying is usually so cheap you can expect to have found enough money to pay for it, or so expensive you'd need dozens of non-magical weapons to afford them. And that's assuming we even find anyone selling magic items (which we can't assume we will,) or top-tier armor. Sid you know, a suit of full plate takes 5 months (150 days) for a smith and his apprentice to craft, or twice that to craft alone? Its not something you'd find sitting around an armorer's shop, unless the person who it was made for died waiting for it to be finished (probably due to a lack of full plate.) D&D's economy has always been screwed-up, but in this edition, its practically non-existent!

Unless you're a wizard. Adding new spells to your spellbook can get expensive. So let's make Ero and Cunaar figure out how to carry it all ;p

I think the issue for the bag may be more one of volume. A bag of holding takes up to 64cu.ft. Is that enough to dump everything in? GM call I guess.

It would really help if one or more of our wizards could help Detect Magic and Identify anything in the pile. HINT HINT!!! :)

I've actually read that essay :) I agree with you that the square footage (which the rules don't even state for each weapon,) might be the bigger issue. That, and if any of the swords lack sheathes, they might risk puncturing the bag from the inside, if I'm interpreting the description correctly.

Regarding the 'mwangana'... I couldn't find it on google either which means I spelled it wrong and meant to delete it. I've been trying to find it in my weapons books, but haven't had a chance to look! It's an African or Indian 'throwing dagger' that has 4 or 5 blades sticking out at different angles, the premise being that no matter how bad you throw it, one of the blades should stick! At least, that's my shaky memory.

Anyway, none of the items were magical, but once Seymour gave his story, it was determined that the dragonmarks on the ogres' chest were magical, but exactly what they did wasn't determinable.

The reason a bastard sword was called that was because it had a longer handle so that you could hold it/wield it with two hands. You could only wield it one handed if you had the proper strength.

5e probably thought is was an unnecessary complication and eliminated it, making the default long sword fulfill that function. Remember, 5e was meant to simplify the game. If you brought in a 3.5 character to a 5e game, he could still use his bastard sword the way he was used to.

Still looking up Bag of Holding. I kind of like the old style versions, though.

Here's the OFFICIAL rules for a Bag of Holding:

"A Bag of Holding has an interior space considerably larger than its outside dimensions, which are roughly 2 feet in diameter at the mouth and 4 feet deep. The bag can hold up to 500 pounds, not exceeding a volume of 64 cubic feet. The bag weighs 15 pounds, regardless of its contents. Retrieving an item from the bag requires an action. If the bag is overloaded, pierced, or torn, it ruptures and is destroyed, and its contents are scattered in the Astral Plane. If the bag is turned inside out, its contents spill forth, unharmed, but the bag must be put right before it can be used again. Breathing creatures inside the bag can survive up to a number of minutes equal to 10 divided by the number of creatures (minimum 1 minute), after which time they begin to suffocate. Placing a bag of holding inside an extradimensional space created by a Heward's Handy Haversack, Portable Hole, or similar item instantly destroys both items and opens a gate to the Astral Plane. The gate originates where the one item was placed inside the other. Any creature within 10 feet of the gate is sucked through it to a random location on the Astral Plane. The gate then closes. The gate is one-way only and can't be reopened."

I'm guessing that it was kept simple so that GMs could modify it to suit his own preferences, such as a bag that held twice as much.

The only part I disagree with is the part about how long breathing creatures can survive in it. We had so much fun with the original concept that anything put in the bag went into STASIS.

Additionally, it doesn't say anything about how big of an item will actually fit through the bag's opening. Assuming the weight and dimensions were met, could you put a horse in it?

We liked having a table set up with a banquet dinner, start to feed a corner of the table in, and the whole table got 'sucked' in. When you pulled it weeks/months later, the dinner was hot and edible like it was when you put it in.

We'd also stuff PCs in it, such as a injured, dying or even dead one, who can be pulled out later in the same condition he went in.

On the other hand, one of the versions of the game introduced the concept of magic items that get better with the more experience you gain. I'm thinking the bag might be one of those kind!

A proper bastard sword is an arming sword with a longer handle, offering the option of greater leverage. An arming sword is best-classified as a short sword. A long sword is always intended to be a 2-handed weapon, except in the case of fantasy games.

Okay. Found it. It's an African Throwing Knife, known as a Mambele or a Kpinga or a Hunga Munga.

The concept for D&D was that a long sword was wielded in one hand while a shield was wielded in the other. While, as Prizzard said, that was normally the 'knightly arming sword', in D&D, not every fighter had to be knight but still fight with a sword and shield.

Whether Gygax and Arneson were trying to be historically accurate or were 'mix-and-matching' ideas to conform to their concept of a fantasy game, who knows now.

In any case, the terms got historically scrambled anyway. What was a 'longsword' in France wasn't the same in England or Germany.

Throw into the mix rapiers, cutlasses, sabres, etc. and you have this image of wielding a sword in one hand. When trying to fit the various types and definitions into what they wanted the game to be, you wound up with the 'concealable' short sword, the 'typical' longsword, the 'exotic' bastard sword and the 'great' (two-handed) sword.

And there have been a dozen variations on those ideas since.

So... what was the question again?

My view is that the current list of weapons tries to simplify swords, as there could be dozens if you’re not careful. So, you end up with:

- Dagger: any kind of single or double bladed knife.
- Shortsword: a sword with a blade less than 2ft.
- Longsword: a sword with a longer, heavier blade and long handle that can be used with 1 or 2 hands.
- Rapier: a long thin sword with one cutting edge and needle point, useable with only one hand.
- Greatsword: a big, heavy weapon that relies on force more than sharpness to do damage, and needs 2 hands to wield effectively.
- Scimitar: a 1h sword with curved blade and one cutting edge.

The rules for Adventures in Middle Earth also add the broadsword, which I view as a wider blade and shorter handle for 1h, mainly used for slashing not stabbing.

I think most exotic blades could fall into a generic category listed above.

I'm just going off the categorization of historians. There are hundreds of subcategories, types, and subtypes, and many of those blur the lines of the given categories, especially if you go by blade length or overall length. Handle, wielding style, and center of percussiin are used rather than blade length in most cases when determining which broad category a weapon fit in.

And yea, honestly, there's far too much variation to be historically accurate with a rpg like this, especially if you take into account how effective full plate really is against swords and hiw well you can move in a properly-fitted suit (which I hope to be wearing this time next year!!)

I did the maths and it worked out the equivalent of a total of 36,838 copper pieces. We have 11 PCs and NPCs, so that is 3348.9cp each, in whatever denomination you want (rather than arguing about specific coins).

For the gear, I suggest you take what you want, as I have done so, and leave the rest behind.

Prizzard sees Victor and Mithra as party leaders so far, obviously not the rather new Grey or himself.

Yes, that's the way it is, but neither Mithra nor Victor see themselves as leaders of the group. They just take the lead when the situation calls for it, mostly with combat.

I kind of assumed Willem wanted to be the one to talk to the guy, since he's the one that called out to him. Normally Victor is quick to make introductions. He's a friendly guy, even if his Charisma score is nothing special.

Aye, we saw that Willem made the first move to initiate. Definitely seems like the take-charge type. We just have yet to take note of his leadership skills. Nothing against Willem, there just hasn't been time. And while Prizzard is a minor noble, he isn't oblivious or haughty enough to assume leadership for himself.

Later on Nyssia can step up....as a bard it would suit her, but for now she's more in tbe rogue mode of scouting, etc

Specifically, you know that Thay is like halfway across the continent, so Sarkathion is quite a ways from home.

Thay is country of magic and wizards.

They use tattoos for identification, magic, and rune-casting.

They are generally considered to be 'not nice', although not necessarily evil.

Anything else is up to you.

Well, using Edwin's portrait didn't hurt.

Have no idea who Edwin is. It was the first picture I ran across that had a red robe and looked suitably intimidating.

He's a Red Wizard of Thay from the PC games Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II (and one of the most popular party members. He's both the most powerful wizard who can join you, and has some of the best lines, esp. among the possible evil party members.) That portrait in particular comes from II. Victor's portrait comes from the same game, btw, a Paladin named Keldorn.

Edit: My mistake, Sarkathion's portrait comes from the first Baldur's Gate.

My name is Willem. My title is Grey, but it is not an honorific to be proud of. To earn it you must have done something bad, and be trying to atone for your sin.

So, calling me Willem is fine. Really, only a member of my Order would call me Grey, as something of a formal insult.

My order, The Holy Protectors of Torm, would be well enough known. Typically they wear black tabards, but mine is grey which will obviously look a bit odd.

No PC has yet asked why I wear the grey...
