Re: Revised Ship Specifications

On Monday my toddler son tested COVID +ve and today his twin sister, Nonna (granny to those without Italian heritage) who is staying with us and myself also did. So if I go off grid for a while that would be why. We're all pretty good - not too serious, but Nonna is late 70's and recovering from Pleurisy so shes suffering most at the moment

New Scientist Character

Hello all. Character Nathaniel "Nat" Harken, a 5 term Scholar (Scientist) is mostly ready to join the party (partying?). I need to fill in a few details for the existing contacts. Looking to see if can add a couple of the active characters as contacts associated with his career events.

He just finished up a term at Duncianae (1824) where he had a scientific breakthrough.
2 terms ago he was at Cassandra (1924) where took some advanced training for Robotics
3 terms ago he was at Drexilthar (1826) where he was involved is some research he was not comfortable with
4 terms ago he was at Ildrissar (2326) where he received a prestigious (at least in science circles) award
5 terms ago he was at Lavnia (2621) where he had an eccentric, brilliant mentor
6 terms ago he did remote university course work at Gaargir (2322) where he grew up.

Here is the background story I wrote up to go with his progress across career terms:

Nat bio:
Nathaniel was born, and grew up on Gaargir, the son of an administrator at the naval base, and an engineer scout. Through basic schooling, Nat was fairly average in most things. A bit brighter then most, but not that strong. He did participate in the group physical outings, when and where permitted by the Navy. The usable locations changed, or were shut down with little official notice. It was not talked about much, but everyone in his (small) peer group knew it was because of various 'operations' the Navy was conducting. Sometimes he was the first to know, because his mom would be more tired, and working longer hours just before the official notices were posted. He liked the stories dad told (when he was around) about the peoples he had seen on distance worlds, or passed from others from even further away.

At 18, he easily passed the university entrance qualifications. That was done mostly as remote computer learning, but the Navy did provide some (limited) access to workshop facilities and tutors at the base for the needed hands on lab work. So he did get to expand the group of people he interacted with. Following some of his fathers background, he studied basic engineering, with a focus on the manoeuvre drive. He spent more time though on learning how legal systems worked across wide ranges of space and governments. While her area was in administration, his mother had talked about problems related to differences in laws and legal systems. That had seemed a challenge to him, and he dived into the learning with enthusiasm.  Some of the laws that varied by system include gambling. He also encounter a group that met regular in one of the labs adjacent to the one he used for engineering. For poker night, and telling outrageous stories. From that, he started learning about gambling as a hobby.

He graduated from university, though not with as good of marks as the entrance qualification would have implied. University had tweaked his interest in learning, and moved into scholar, and the marks were good enough to help qualify for a Scholar career.  Lavnia was only a couple of weeks (plus layover time) away at jump 2. One of the feudal lords there had need of advocate skills, and an aptitude for science.

Everyone starting this career learned much the same skills. There were differences. He learned to drive hovercraft, where others worked with wheeled or tracked vehicles. He learned remote operations, while others did sensors or computers. This also when he was first exposed to Psionicology. That was something outside his experience, and he learned more than others about it. He decide on a scientist assignment.

Jumping into that, he learned to write reports that were both accurate and interesting to others. He considered a career as a journalist, or writer, but science was still a stronger draw. The person he was working for was eccentric, but brilliant. The reports on his research into intelligent beings was required reading for those in the field. He learned a lot while asking questions, and turning the research notes into something more consumable by a wider audience, although he did not advance to the next rank as a Scholar.

With a recommendation from his mentor, he got passage and work support an expedition on Ildrissar, where some Iltharan ruins where discovered. It was nearly 2 months travel time, which he spent improving his education. It was interesting work, that he did well, despite the higher gravity, pressure, and nuisance of filter masks anytime you need to go outside. Extending from what he had learned about Sphontology, and what he was learning about Archaeology and the Iltharan language produced results that were noted more widely. He was awarded the sector wide Humming prize for 'advancement of understanding of previous civilizations'. It definitely helped that his advocate training kept all of the arguments logical and related. It did not hurt that the reports were interesting to read, due to the writing skill picked up previously. It got his work in front of the eyes that choose the recipient.

The award got his name known in some of the right, and wrong, circles. Travelling to Drexilthar, he was asked to do work that left him quite uncomfortable, but his curiosity, and thirst for knowledge won out. They were looking for ways to selectively block different psionic abilities.  His advocate training stood him in good stead here, dealing with the omnipresent bureaucracy and convoluted laws. Even that would not have been enough, if his patron had not been easing the way. As it was, he made some enemies. One a fellow scientist that figured (possibly rightly) that he was taking the work too far. The other was almost accidental, when he 'proved' that with the existing laws, that a specific seizure of  equipment he needed was illegal. The responsible administrator lost face and position, and was forced to deal with her own lengthy legal process. It was never stated, but reading between the lines, he figured that someones' goal was to block things like telepathy and clairvoyance, while allowing telekinesis to work. With the aim of creating a 'safe' (controllable) telekinetic work force. The results were mixed, and inconsistent, usually with serious side-effects. The path they were trying was not going to work.  Still, he learned more about Sphontology and Psionicology. Promoted to rank 2, he also learn to work with computers effectively.

Shaking the legal tangles and other issues from his heals, he moved to Cassandra, where a corporation was doing some research with robotics and remote operations for mining the asteroids. He updated is skill with remote operation electronics, and got some advanced training for robotics, which he further improved on with the research. If they can work out the remaining glitches, and get the manufacturing costs and complexity down a bit, there might be a new line of semi automated mining robots on the market soon. That is all just engineering.

He gets an offer, and moves to Duncinae. It will be nice to be able to take a walk without needing to take special protective measures. He has not been able to really enjoy an afternoon stroll or outdoor swim since leaving home after university. A lot more people, but he has become used to, even comfortable with, the crowding. He picks up a bit more general Medic training, learns the Iltharan language better. Combining that with his previous skills and work produces enough of a breakthrough in the understanding of Iltharan society that he was promoted without the usual performance review interview process. Still, he is finding himself more tired lately. It is time to consider something new.

@Sam: Sorry to hear about your Covid woes.  Take care of yourself and your family.  Come back to us when you can.

And @Nathaniel:  Hi!  Looking forward to RPing with you.  Sharik is also from Gaargir (and the same/number of terms); so, it is quite possible that they might have known each of from primary or secondary school if you like (in when they were younger than 18, i.e. pre-Term 1).  She didn't go to university, but does has Scout Service contacts from Gaargir (her parents), as well as a few Naval contacts, though her time in the IN was less rosy, due to being conscripted/drafted her second term.  And has travelled for the last 12 years more or less freelancing and doing odd jobs.  So, it is possible that she might have bumped into you at any of those times if you so desire.  Feel free to post here or in a PM if you wish to discuss further.

Psionicology: The study of psionic powers and phenomena.
page 71 of MGT2

Nat has Science (Robotics) 1, but that is "The study of robot construction and use", not specifically repair. Repair would seem to need Mechanic, since there is nothing `directly` apparent under Electronics or Engineer. Nat has Mechanic/0. Possibly Engineer (m-drive) and Engineer (power) also apply, since both could be needed for robots.  Even Electronics (comms), (computers), (sensors) will overlap. You could think of robots as miniature space ships, without jump drive or life support. Assuming they include grav-drive. Walkers would not need the drive, but would be more on the Mechanic side.

With GM approval, Nat could get a bonus on repair from the science skill. He can definitely make 'helpful' suggestions for repairs. I am thinking that (in some situations) that "and use" could get a bonus for remote ops.

Re: TAMI moving to modern systems

Traveller skills are painted with really broad strokes, so Science (robotics) that deals with construction of robots also covers repairing robots. Depending on the robot's systems that have been damaged, other skills might work better or aid in repairs. Generally, I'd think Mechanics would apply to the robot's movement system. Likewise, Sensors would apply to the artificial eyes.

THREAD TITLE REDACTED

In reply to Nathaniel Harken (msg # 960):

Looking for Connections, huh?

Vonon spent 5 Career Terms in the Cassandra System Space Patrol (Vonon only went thru 5 Terms, total).  Vonon spent his entire life in the Cassandra System, until he resigned/retired and left Cassandra to "go see an Ocean" ...  (Planet Grendel -- remember, guys? ^_^ )

So, Nate, your 5th Term -- spent in Cassandra System -- would coincide with Vonon's 4th Term in the CSP, where we could have met.  Vonon did have an Event that Nate might have seen in local news -- and where we could have encountered one another...

Event: Foil Attempted Crime
Recently promoted to Sublieutenant, Vonon is transferred to the Cassandra Space Patrol Cruiser Watchdog, as the Asst. Signals & Detection Officer.
While cataloguing evidence after the apprehension of a Claim-Jumping Gang, Vonon notes that a sidearm found on a Perp is Patrol Issue.  Thinking to return the weapon to the Patrolman (or the family of) that the weapon belonged to, Vonon ran the serial number ... and discovered that an outdated sidearm with that serial number had been removed from service three years prior and was destroyed.  Only, a weapon with that serial number -- the weapon in his hand -- was almost brand new and not even the same model as the weapon reported destroyed.
Vonon brings this to his Captain's attention, and over a period of a few months, Sublieutenant Ronkunu's investigation discovers a Patrol Quartermaster Officer was swapping out newer and better Patrol equipment and weapons for older and out-of-date stuff that was supposed to have been destroyed.  Sending the older gear out to Patrol ships in need of re-supply, the Quartermaster Officer was then selling the new and good stuff for high profit.
While Sublieutenant Ronkunu's investigation did expose the operation, the ringleader -- Patrol Captain Kenwith Saldaryn -- was able to escape. Patrol sources determined that Captain Saldaryn had escaped with the assistance of a local criminal syndicate known to have association with Dakaar Corporation.
[Gain an Enemy]

Vonon and Nate could have encountered each other, when...

Maybe those Claim-Jumpers raided/stole from the facility where Nate was doing his Mining Drone research, Vonon & Nate met and struck up a friendship, keeping in touch for the few years that Nate was in-system...

Vonon's "investigation" was about Supply Chain issues--the Watchdog could have encountered/inspected supply ships heading to the facility where Nate was or stopped to investigate supply drops to/from the facility.  Again, for whatever reason, Vonon and Nate strike up a friendship...

Having encountered each other Professionally (part of a Signals & Detection Officer's job is launching & operating Survey and Observation Drones/Probes), Vonon and Nate could have bumped into each other Socially, at Rockport, and become friends...

Or the relationship has nothing to do with Vonon's event.  Maybe you just dated one of Vonon's Littermates ... if Nate is into that kinda thing ... ^_^

Similarly, I've only ever detailed 1 of Vonon's siblings -- so maybe, instead of dating one of them, you worked with one of them, on your Mining Drone project...

Or any other idea you might have ^_^

Note, if Nat drops Sharik's name (since Shar and Nat are connected previous to Nat's fifth term), Vonon (which is connected to Shar as well - from, well before Vo's fourth term, let's just say) will likely generate some recognition there.  Hopefully, positive, but recognition no matter what.

Just sayin'.

Nathaniel and Voonon history

In reply to Vonon Ronkunu (msg # 962):

In addition to the things mentioned, Nate's event while at Cassandra was being sent for advanced education: Science (Robotics). His initial training that term was Electronics (remote ops) 1, and for the new rank on advancement Investigate 1. He already had Advocate 2. So lots of things to hook to your story.

The official MGT2 piece is the advanced training event (Since it is Nathaniel looking to gain the contact), so the best place to start seems to be the Survey and Observation Drones/Probes. The advanced training included interaction with the CSP systems. Voonon demonstrated the real life usage in conjunction with the more theoretical aspects of the training. Which lead to Nate asking questions, which continued after 'class', and over drinks. Captain Kenwith Saldaryn and the Appropriation of patrol resources was in the news, so was something else to talk about. Linking both to Nat's Advocate skill, and him learning Investigate 1 that term.

Sharik suggested bringing up her name in the conversation, since it was (apparently) the previous term that Voonon met her, while Nat has known her since childhood. I do not see a need to do that. There is no obvious reason to mention her here, unless grav-bikes get talked about, and her racing. An "oh, you two know each other?" IG works fine.

Want to expand on that any?

Nathaniel and Vonon history

In reply to Nathaniel Harken (msg # 964):

Yeah, the concept of how Vonon & Nate met, "back then", sounds good to me -- CSP Watchdog could have participated in several "field tests" of Nate's research.  Nate could have come aboard a few times, while the Watchdog demonstrated some tricks for scanning asteroids, observed field operation tests of the drones, etc., and Vonon, as AS&D Officer would have been his onboard liaison -- similarly, Vonon could have been called over, on occasion, to wherever Nate and Co. were doing their tech work to either observe tests, or offer suggestions on improvements.  Over the course of the Term, this professional association becomes a more social one.  Nate's side-interest in Law and Admin crosses into Vonon's family being involved in the Cassandra's Belt Judicial & Administrative organizations.  Vonon's side-interest in Drones crosses into Nate's involvement with Drone Design (it was Vonon who named all the drones aboard Longshot, he even talks to them...)
     It all jives.

Vonon and Sharik met early in Vonon's career -- we bonded over knife-fighting.  As a Martial Art.  Sharik was petite and lightning quick -- Vonon had greater reach & mass plus sharper senses ... and whiskers!  We were pretty evenly matched.  Vonon's nickname for her is "Sha'rr" [pronounced SHAH-err], which means, in the Ovaghoun dialect of the Vargr language, "Slim Blade" (i.e., a Stiletto).  The first time Vonon heard one of her (Human) friends call her "Shar" -- like you do -- he thought they were saying "Sha'rr".  He found it funny.
The span of time between when Vonon met Sharik and when he met Nate would be a couple of Terms, so it might be better to set it up that, while we both know Nate, we don't know that the other also knows Nate.  That sets us up for the always-fun "Wait-- You know Nate, Too?!!" scenario ^_^

Re: Revised Ship Specifications

It is fine with me, if the two connections don't overlap until play,

Even if is a little unlikely given the population on Gaargir (7000 total) is so sparse and there aren't that many 'Shariks' or 'Nathaniels' on the planet.  Unlike Earth where if you someone says, 'Oh, you're from Sol, do you know the Blarg family ...', if you find out that someone is from Gaargir, saying 'Oh, you're from Gaargir, do you know the Kaagira/Harken family' is likely to solicit a 'Yes!' (unless they lie) since their kids all probably went to the same schools/activities, or are employed in similar/related Imperial Naval or Scout service sectors, &c ...

Still, there is something to be said for willful ignorance (and/or compartmentalization).  And/or the sparseness could lead to isolation (though it wasn't in this case, since Shar and Nat are connected... :D).

Re: Revised Ship Specifications

In reply to Vonon Ronkunu (msg # 965):

How's this look:

Nathaniel and Vonon:
While doing research at Cassandra, more specifically Cassandra's Belt, Nathaniel had the opportunity to take some advanced training on robot construction and use. That involved interaction with the local patrol. CSP Watchdog and her crew were some of the resources used. Nat assumed they were getting early looks at the research, which made them more cooperative about running demonstrations, and answering questions about real life requirements and limitations, as well as help field test some of the research experiments. The liason was an AS&D officer name Vonon. The questions and comparing of notes continued 'after hours', and over the course of the term (and drinks, and dinners), Nat also learned about the Ronkunu family, bits about criminal investigation, administration and legal aspects of the local bureaucracy, and that Vonon wanted to see an ocean sometime. As well as robotics. In turn, he share bits about the previous research he had been involved in, where and who had worked with. The quirky mentor and feudal lord on Lavnia, the Iltharan dig on Ildrissar, the bureaucracy and legal hassles of Drexilthar.

One thing Nat and Vonon never happened to talk about was exactly where he was from. Nat never considered it important. He talked about the projects worked on during various terms, and even that his university education was mostly 'distance learning', but never happened to mention Gaargir. There are lots of other 'interesting' things to discuss. Gaargir is just a place.

OOG: I do that real life. I grew up in a small community, but even when talking about what happened there, I seldom mention the name of the place. It is just 'where I grew up', or 'where I went to school'. The assumption is that this far away, since it is so small, people will not know it, or care either.

Well ... except for this one time ...

I was in Boulder, Colorado, talking with this guy, and he asks where I'm from.  I respond with "Little town called Greenfield, Massachusetts.", and then inwardly cringe, waiting for him to mention Boston ...

Only ... he gives me this assessing look, then says "Huh.  You don't sound like a Kennedy ..."

I was floored!  I started laughing and explained that nobody sounds like the Kennedy's, except The Kennedy's -- it's a Family accent, not a Regional one.  (Well, okay, there's a little bit of Gloucester in there, but still...)

Let me make this clear, I do not have that "traditional Boston accent" -- I'm "...from the other side of Worcester..." (Western Mass) and have a fairly 'neutral' accent.  Ay'yup...
