Re: Out of Character
Can I call a mulligan for my last response? I definitely did not convey my ideas well as I should have. It should have sounded more like this.

Cain trying to steer the conversation away from what they found and why they need the items because how do you make it sound like you do not belong in an insane asylum after talking about a shining silver circle that teleports you to the wild west. Cain response to Lt Weller, "Thank you Lt Weller your information, please show us the way to the post office so we can speak to Marion."

And the fast talk skill is to influence the Lt to hopefully not ask about the items or what they found and just being them to the post office.

Short sword should be Small Sword...a fencing weapon. Saber is fine as well. The Physician skill is wise, but it's a 12 year course... even back then it was years of training ... with no previous medical training it just can't be accomplished. Even an SF medic gets about two years or so of training! You can have First Aid at both TLs (5 and 9+) and put a 4 points in them. If you pull Cain out for a bit and run another character, the he could get trained more completely.

Re: Out of Character
It's certainly allowable... but you might want to get some information on them...
Not exactly a ladies weapon or one you can conceal easily... also uses pin-fire cartridges... look those up too ;-)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeMat_Revolver

The originals were Cartridge revolvers, but the cartridge had no rim and each fired case has to be manually knocked out with a rod. The originals were 9 mm and 10 mm (36 and 41 cal) with a 20 ga shot barrel which was NOT cartridge loaded.

Loaded it's around 4 Lbs, about 10" long overall ... my 2 ... there are better choices ;-) although not as snazzy.

Also interesting information here....  https://www.gunandgame.com/thr...e-conversion.109360/

Ok here are the skills given for 19th century life
- appliances (Gaslights, Oil Lanterns, stoves and pot belly stoves etc.)
- horseback riding
- coach use and harnessing
- manners (especially for the ladies, since un-mannered women may suffer unduly) and games as well as anything else that they feel a normal person would know call it Savoir-Faire - Middle Class TL 5

- saber or smallsword
- Black powder firearms (pistol & rifle)
- Period English usage and colloquialisms
- History
- Medicine and Science as known back then
- Morse code

10 Points + 4 free
(essentially 1 point of skill in each of the above, plus 4 points that may be freely spent in any of those areas to excel).

I will also consider other skills with some justification.

All looks good except that the 1849 Colt uses powder and ball, not cartridges... HOWEVER, by the later 18650's or 1860, there were conversions to allow rimfire cartridges... these still require the cylinder to be removed and disassembles to reload. the earlier cap and ball pistols were often reloaded with a spare cylinder or two...

Re: Out of Character
In reply to Tiffany Chase (msg # 102):

Good find on that web page... lets use it...
Note that .41 short is less powerful than .32 short ;-) get a SW Model 2.
It actually shoot a pointed disk ... a fellow shot a telephone book about 10 years ago and had the bullet bounce back and hit him at a range of around 8 feet... his opinion of that cartridge was not high.

All ... the .44 Army is a large and powerful weapon ... close to a foot long and 3 Lbs anyway... a good firearm, but not something you'll hide easily. 30 rounds means 30 round ball, a box of caps (assume 30 or so), a couple of ounces of grease and around a 1/4 Lb of powder. The powder is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) so must be kept dry and is weakened by being shaken or jostled over time, causing the grains to turn to powder dust, thus not burning as well.

Where possible, cartridge weapons have many advantages, even if getting ammo may be more difficult.

Gm, you said the aliens are different then humans. Are any of the differentness noticeable, like they bleed green? Or are they more like their appendix works?

What about a Whitney Navy (.36 Cap and Ball)?

In reply to Tiffany Chase (msg # 104):

As to how different and what those are ... guess that is for you to find out!

The Whitney is a good weapon, smaller than the .44 by a good bit. But for concealed carry, the SW #2 is probably best for you. Ladies just don't go around carrying weapons openly. Calamity Jane was a Circus performer... not a regular citizen.

The others will have to make some decisions on what to carry... You just don't know what will be ignored and what will cause an issue.

Actually, you need to look her up, she was far more then a circus performer.  She worked as a scout for Custer and the army.

As far as concealing the 36, there is always my hand bag. :)

That's some handbag... "Colt 1851 Navy Revolver. .36 cal Mfg by Pietta. Blued steel frame. Walnut Grips. Octagonal barrel. Engraved naval scene on the cylinder. 7 1/2" barrel, 13 1/3" overall."

This is slightly smaller -
Colt 1862 Pocket Police, .36 cal. Handy little revolver with a round barrel similar to the colt 1860. Blued steel with a color case hardened frame. Half fluted cylinder is very attractive. 5 1/4" barrel and 10 1/2" overall. Designed for discriminating use with its' compact design. Could be carried in a pocket or holster. Yeah... but hardly a petite weapon... some later versions had the barrel further shortened with some loss in power/velocity/accuracy.

Lets give Tiffany a Beaumont Adams 6 shot revolver in .36 cap lock [1D+2 pi] ... it's a bit shorter and is also double action. See page 94 of High Tech (page 93 has a write up on it). Common enough in 1856 or so...

What dam does the Colt 1862 Pocket Police, .36 cal do?  I mean really, when woman traveled, like we are, they carried guns.

Re: Out of Character
In reply to Tiffany Chase (msg # 110):

True, but not that sort... a 10 inch long 3 Lb pistol is not something a lady drug along. Most carried .22, .31 or the .32 S&W #2 when it came out. Note the .32 S&W does 1D+1 pi while your .36 does 1D+2! ... also much smaller and faster to load. Rimfire was a big improvement.

A for going through a woman's purse...yes, what a mess of papers, and junk, keys, cards and flyers.

I offered you an equivalent .36 Cal with double action (you can just pull the trigger to fire, or cock the hammer) ... the Colt is single action only.

Note that most folks used the .31 Cap and Ball as a concealed weapon. It's around 7" and around a pound and a half.

OK, that's fine. What kind of gear are they willing to let me take deeper into the Western World?  I would think I need a good radio of some kind that is also small.  Maybe a small digital camera. Not sure what she could take to look at the pictures. Also a solar battery generator. The uzi and some ammo though she would also use a local pistol as she can get ammo for it.

Re: Out of Character
They will put a reasonably powerful HF Radio in the attic of Prudence's house.  You'll get a small R/T set to carry, with a small battery and the solar generator.
They find you a small .38 cal revolver, made by Chart Arms that can pass for a period piece, but shoots the 9 mm and is double action.. They are not happy about you taking the Uzi, both for weight and because it is obviously not of the period. The finally settle on a MAC-10 in 9 mm which isn't period, but is smaller a bit lighter and a bit easier for you to control. It is semi and full auto selectively, although you have to pull the wire stock out to control it on full auto.

No, but they can make a viewer that has the camera built in... the viewer is like a 2 power square telescope for seeing distant objects. Very low tech, but appropriate. The Camera has it's own 4X zoom.

OK, Maps for Group 3, 4 and 5 are crappy jpgs that you can hopefully read... that's the essence of the Book(s) on Texas.

True... Families did...  but young singles of standing did no such thing. You aren't in a prairie hick village, you are in New Orleans, staying at a prestigious hotel. You represented yourself as Brother and Sister ... just saying.
Now if you choose to represent yourselves as Husband and wife, there would be no questions.

I will point out that Birth Control wasn't included in your support pack and no one listed it in their things .... current tech is still animal intestines for condoms.

If it is a good hotel, does the hotel have rooms with 2 rooms? Higher quality ones often did, and still do, have more than one rooms.

Of course, Trevor never mentions the relationship...he leaves that up to Tiffany.

Re: Out of Character
If you look at your character sheets, you will see that I have added Magery 0 for 15 points.... this is where you start... you first spells are learned at IQ+Magery level times 20 hours per point learned.
When your magery level goes up due to training, you learn faster. each level will allow a reduction in training time... Magery 1 reduces your training time by 40 hours. Magery 2 will allow an additional 30 hour reduction and each level grants a shorter learning time... however spells get more complex, so the amount saved is less at each level. By the time you get to magery 4, yo will be saving about 100 hours off each spell or point expended.

An apprentice works to master 10 spells plus the staff spell, which is used by every mage. It takes a slow but steady enchantment, to generate the 30 points needed. Every mage learns this spell, and several other neutral spells before they can be considered journeymen, and go out in the world to prove themselves.
Magery 0 is any untrained person or an apprentice (note that a wise woman may have awareness, but never have been trained). Apprentices may know any number of spells short of what and Adept knows.
Magery 1 is an Adept, who knows 12 spells (not including STAFF) and at least 8 spells at IQ+0 or better. He pays 5 experience points and is recognized as an Adept.
Magery 2 is an Journeyman, who knows 15 spells (not including STAFF) and at least 10 spells at IQ+1or better. He pays 10 experience points and is recognized as a Journeyman.
Magery 3 is a Master, who knows 20 spells (not including STAFF) and at least 15 spells at  IQ+2 or better. He pays 20 experience points and is recognized as a Master, who can then train Apprentices and Adepts.
Magery 4 is an Arch Mage, who knows at least 30 spells (not including STAFF) and at least 20 spells at IQ+3 or better. He pays 40 experience points and is recognized as an Arch Mage, who can then train others of any level.

A mage who lives long enough to achieve master in each of the colleges is granted White Mage status by the last college he masters. He is a Grand Master of magic, and if this should happen during your lifetime, you will see all the masters of all the magical guilds attend his robing. White Mages are exceptionally rare, and often as not, there are none known to be alive. The most known alive at one time was three, and all of them were rumored to be several hundred years old. There is a reason why Elves and Dragons seem to be the most powerful magic users.

The known Convocations (Colleges) are:
1) Growth & Decay, includes Herbalists, healing and body control as well as some Necromancy
2) Water (in all forms) , dark and cold and slow
3) Knowledge and Mind Control
4) Air - Light, Movement and Illusion Spells
5) Fire and Haste
6) Artifice & Enchantments, includes Alchemy
7) Neutral and common spells that all convocations know.

OK, sorry... got pulled away to make dinner...

Tiffany gets a +2 to her IQ in the Artifacts Convocation for the Crit roll...
Trover and Tiffany are both at 0 for their  primes convocations, Knowledge for Trevor and Plants, animals etc for Tiffany.

Trevor is at -2 for the two convocations beside his main one (Air and Water).

Once you reach Adept  this minus goes away...

Re: Out of Character
Not sure I posted this...

All Magic users start out with Thaumatology  0 (apprentices); persons who have been noted to have Magical talent. A few Mages go on to create many new spells and grow the base of knowledge to such an extent that the Guild proposes them to be granted Arch-Mage status.  Archmages are normally those with Magery 4+. To be clear, you raise your Thaumatology skill, which raises your magery level.

I will add Thaumatology  0  to your skill sets.

Also, it follows obviously that those spells you passed during testing are going to be easier to learn, as you have done them and just need to refine them...new ones may be harder... but you may pick 3 or 4 you'd like to learn first and we'll work on those.

Oh...the staff can be a wand, rod or staff.... so a music baton could be used, or a cane, umbrella or walking stick... what precisely you use is open to discussion, except that ferrous metals may not be included in a staff. so the Umbrella above will be all wood and brass for instance.

Re: Out of Character
Basd on folks not maintaining Character Sheet s in Legends, I figured I had better check here... and sure enough, you aren't maintaining them here either. Both of you should have a spell entry and notes from the follow posting.

Trevor- You successfully cast the spell Measurement.
Air:
Air spells that create wind effects (no rain, clouds etc.), movement spells that allow flight, manipulate the sense of sight. Lightning spells, Illusion spells, but none that create actual, physical items. Light spells that affect vision with the application of light (i.e. no darkness spells) and sound spells.  Spells that create air and allow one to breath in irregular circumstances belong here.

Knowledge:
Communication and Empathy, Knowledge, Mind Control, Protect/Warning. All Communication and Empathy spells. All Knowledge and Mind Control spells.  Necromantic spells that involve spirits.

Water:
Elemental spells that concern water, ice and darkness. All Darkness and Water spells. Spells that are used to cool and spells that grant protection against cold and fire though counter heating spells. Weather spells that cause cooling, rain/snow, fog or "gloom" effects and Breath Water. Movement spells that cause slowing.

Tiffany- Who has cast Move Earth & Wither Plant ...

Artifice or mineral and enchantment:
Elemental spells that concern stone, minerals, or gems. All Weapon and Armor Enchantment spells. All Making and Breaking spells affecting inanimate (even organic) objects. Earth (as in the soft ground and soil).

Growth and Decay College:
Elemental Spells, Healing, Animal, Plant, Body Control spells, Body Control Elemental spells. All Animal Control, Plant and Food spells. Necromantic spells that affect the physical state of living/dead creatures (Zombies and the undead).

Re: Out of Character
Well in this case it would be a book of how to cast certain spells... A notebook with your notes would eventually be a spell book too.
Some of these are printed books, often with little bits left out so the untrained can't go casting spells. Less commonly, you'll buy one with notes in it, which makes it more useful. Actual spell books are frequently coded to keep the mages spells and knowledge secret.

Mages are about 6 pages in the city directory... most sound like sleight of hand artists.
There are quite a few shops that claim to sell magical items ... You note that in the area near Gerhardt Kennemann seems to have 3-4 other 'mages' who seem more legitimate and there are two "magic" stores in that area as well.

Tech wise... yes, street lights, police on the corner, streetcars... some places even have a telegraph repeater! There is a field in Lakehurst, New Jersey for landing Zepplins!

Re: Out of Character
No, the Zeppelin's are used for long flights, trans-atlantic mostly. There are some smaller lighter than air craft that offer rides, but their safety and reliability are suspect. Most don't show enough profit to keep up with maintenance. The few who do, soon move into longer trips and higher costs. A Trans Atlantic Zeppelin Flight (New York to Berlin) is around $600-800 for one person.

In the big city, a dollar a day is poverty... $1.50 a day is poor ... rents and costs are high and travel from outside the city is expensive relatively speaking. As usual, having a bit more money allows one to shop and save.

Re: Out of Character
The US pushes the 15% and 20% for exceptional service... I was using that standard. The tip gets split between waiter, bus boy, Maitrie De and perhaps some others, so 10% isn't so much in that light. Many years ago, the bus boy got 15-20% of the tips, The Maitre De got something similar and the waiter got the remainder ... frequently today,  the Restaurant also wants a cut too.

For this period (and the fact that you were there for perhaps two hours or so, as well as getting exceptional service), I'd say 20%

Most times 10-15% is quite adequate, depending on service.  Rather than make a fuss, let's just say you gave him $22 and everyone was all smiles.

Trevor will be looking for attics or other out of the way places that people may not have thought of.

Re: Out of Character
In reply to Trevor Strohkirch (msg # 512):

There are attics, stuffy and dusty, but with no windows and any attempt to make a holes to shoot through would drop slates on the ground, further more, there aren't many ways to get a good rest for the bipod and escape would be slow and awkward. You do note that other have been up here, but you can't tell whether it was Prussians or the servants.

And on the roof itself? If they got repelling gear, escape might be quick, if obvious...

If you look at the roof, you can see it is very steep. A dangerous place to go without special equipment and one little favoring the use of such a weapon.

So there are no flat roofs? We westerners are use to that :)

Some of the other buildings would seem to have less steep roofs...  but it would be an exposed and obvious location.

So at least roofs can be ruled out. So we need to figure a close window with a good field of fire.

Did we get any police badges, in case we want to look in a room?

In reply to Kate Fischer (msg # 539):

She needs to introduce you to Inspector Manley, which will cause some questions to be sure, as he thinks the three of them are just American tourists.  If you've read the Pursuing Prussians, I think you have the immediate knowledge, perhaps minus a thing or two. Trevor and Lucretia will answer questions, provide back ground and fill you in if need be.

I am not sure he does, He thinks they are from a different place and does suspect them due to the technology they know, which is not of his time... Can't remember if they ever explained that ... Trevor? Do you remember?

Re: Out of Character
I'm talking about this exchange:

Trevor Strohkirch:
In reply to Tiffany Chase (msg # 42):

"No dear, though the Prussians seem to be doing pretty well at it. After all, how did they open these portals?"

Lucretia Willinghams:
Perhaps through the same dumb luck you seemed to have ... or because they found another place like the one near Prudence's town.

Inspector Robert Q. Manly:
Excuse me, but I am confused. What are we talking about now?

Tiffany Chase:
"Oh the magical gates that these Prussians probably went though and got the machine gun. But unless we can show it to you, you will not believe it I suppose, like magic."

Inspector Robert Q. Manly:
Harumpf... The Gates likely have a perfectly understandable scientific explanation, just like those charlatans o the street corners do ... no magic involved. I cannot comprehend how you can be educated and still believe in this hogwash.

Trevor Strohkirch:
In reply to Inspector Robert Q. Manly (msg # 47):

"Any science, if sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic. We come from a high tech world: it is in our interest to encourage such beliefs."

Manly appears to know about the gates, and they discuss being from another world in front of him, as if it's something he already knows.

Re: Out of Character
There's also this, clearly talking about being from another time:

Tiffany Chase:
"Well, its not like I can tell even. To me they are all Germanic. In our time, Germany is one country"

Inspector Robert Q. Manly:
And would be here if Prussia has it's way, but so far they have not, despite every effort on their part.

And again, he appears to already know and accept it.

LoL... and he seems to not be very accepting...  but OK, I'll grant he should know....
He denies Magic, although it has been used discreetly around him. Lets leave him in denial ... it's all just smoke and mirrors.
