000- Bern Asheye (introduction)
Bern was in pain, he thought his shoulder bone was broken, and he was unable to move his right arm for sure.
He had heard of these old ruins from the Beornings at the Old Ford, who had told him that they could be seen when one moved up into the Misty Mountains.  So Bern had come here to seek some old, lost treasures.
He had arrived in the evening, and discovered the place:  ancient walls and ruined arches. Most being hardly more than two or
three stones still piled on each other, but it is clear from marks in the ground and the old lines of the path that a town once stood here.
Things had gone wrong as he rested that night:  a shadow had reached out to grab his heart, and, although he was from Dale, a place that bred bold men...  he had fled into the night, falling over rocks, smashing his collar bone.
Now he was moving back down towards the Old Ford, furious at being unable to explore these ruins, ashamed at having fled some stupid nightmare...

Re: 000- Bern Asheye (introduction)
Bern was still resting at the Old Ford when a Hobbit caravan had come through in the late Spring, and it was a fun sight:  all these little people setting out to trade or whatever in the East.
Now, as Summer was here, and though his arm was healed, Bern's purse was empty - having had to pay for lodging and food and healing, since he was unable to hunt and such - he heard the news of the Inn the Hobbits were building up to the North East, and that they needed helping hands.
He thought that it would be a good move to check it out:  working there would mean good food and getting his monies back up to a nice level, but, especially, a new Inn would attract people, and he could learn more about places to explore, and, especially, about those mountain ruins.
That is why Bern Asheye came to help in the building of the Easterly Inn and spend the end of the year there.

Re: 000- Bern Asheye (introduction)
It was a frustrating time recuperating at the old Ford, it was not just that he had to watch his resources slowly trickle away nor the long bed rest and lack of physical activity that was forced upon him. It was  not even the shadow of cowardice that plagued him, like it or not Bern knew he was no king Bard nor was he an elven lord of old he had came to term with his action they were wise if not of valor. No, what really gnawed at Bern core was the fact that there was a ruining with hidden secret waiting to be explored and he was in capable of explore it.

When the Hobbit caravan he watched it with wonder, like all people of Dale he had heard many tales and boasting of the Hobbit hero Bilbo and to see a full caravan of them was a sight of wonder. No less was the reputation of legendary burglary skills all hobbit had mastered at early age.

He had approached the caravan and offered his skills, soon he had learned that they have came here to set an inn and he was once more happy on his father insistence he would learn the family trade of shaping woods. He had assist them in setting the inn and even curved figures of merry bearing and decent art, if he may admit so for his own meager skill, to decorate the inn and make it a homely place.

So it was, in the Summer of 2945, that you joined this group of traveling Hobbits - the Brandybuck brothers and family, Milo Roper, and Andwise Rumble, and moved North with them to where they were to build their Inn.
You left the darkness behind you, that Shadow you felt in the ruins of the old man-town...  though you vowed to go back one day.  And you went to a warmer place, full of Hope, of building a new Inn and attracting a village around it.

Re: 000- Bern Asheye (personal)
I will use this thread for personal / side-exchanges.

During the night, though resting well, a dream came to you.
You felt it was not a simple dream, but probably one of those where people told you many times that while sleeping your pale ash-colored eyes suddenly open, though you do not wake.
Getting up in the morning, before going down to share breakfast, you remember this:  up and up you went, to a place high and cold, but suddenly the world closed in around you, trying to constrict you somehow, and you then dove deep down into the darkness.

OOC:  back to your personal thread, for some IC events after the first adventure.

As others in the Fellowship, Bern Asheye felt strengthened by the events on the road to the Ring-fort and the Battle up high in the Mountains.  The meeting with the Night-wight had made him Wiser in that he knew better how to be wary of the Shadow, and he was braver and better with his Great Bow, having tested his mettle in the fight against Orcs and Goblins.

Re: 000- Bern Asheye (personal)
Traveling East, after Shalronel left the small group of Fellows returning home to spend the winter, Bern and the two Dwarves arrived in Dale, where Brandoin and Bés were only going to spend a day or two, before moving on to Erebor, leaving Bern with his folk.
However, Bés surprised all by requesting a meeting with one of King Bard's close advisors, in order to pass on a splendid Sapphire brooch of Dwarven make from Erebor for Bard himself, on behalf of Bern, telling of Bern's gallant behavior facing Denizens of the Night and Orc bands.
Thus Bern Asheye attracted the King's attention, and was offered a position - he had long dreamt of but never believed he would ever get - as one of the "King's Men", becoming one of the Elite archer-guards sworn to defend Dale as Bard had against even a dragon!
Thus he trained hard, non stop, all through the Fall and through the Winter, happy to have become a Respectable Citizen of Dale, being one of the King's Men!
Thus he perfected his use of the Spear and Great Bow but also started learning the art of the more noble Long Sword.
Now, this increase in his mastery of the martial art made him a lot more assured, and confident, and he felt it was easier now for him to strike awe in people he met…  and it was also easier for him to read them, for his travels had taught him to be more wary.
Becoming an official guard of Dale, King Bard's Treasurer gifted Bern with a nice sum of silver coins, which, added to the pay from the Hobbits, made a small hoard of his own to leave at home.

Bern did hear about the Council of the North, and saw his companions, who had come through Dale, and he heard a bit about what transpired.

However, it was a lot later, just before Spring, that this Council impacted Bern.  For he was summoned one evening by his Guard-officer…  and was surprised to meet King Bard himself, waiting for him in the Guard-house.

"Guard of Dale, friend Bern",  Bard said, smiling at Bern, "I have come in secret to ask you whether you would take it upon yourself to leave Dale once again, and serve your city by traveling?"

As Bern, thought of what to answer, he gripped his good old spear hard.
Though the haft was well-worn and smoothed by use, the head was shiny and seemed new:  Bern's good friend Brandoin had reforged the spear at the forges of Dale, making the blade heavier and stronger, being thrice-forged and of thicker iron.
Bern knew it would rend his foes with more strength, wounding them more.

Re: 000- Bern Asheye (personal)
Its been a long Fall and Winter, with the help of his friends Bern was able to reforge the tip of his spear, a trice forged dwarven spear head that would leave jagged marks on its prey rending grievous wounds. He named his spear Stone-bane for it had felled a great stone troll.

The announcement that he would become one of the kings men caught hi off guard, he had never consider himself wise or brave enough nor was had thought he would be of worthy skill to be part of Dale elite protectors.

He was determined to be worthy of the commission he got and threw himself deep into the training. He trained night and day and his skills with the bow were rapidly growing, he even began practicing with a long sword, a noble weapon and while he was not content with his progress, his instructors noted that he mastered the sword fast.

When the summon came to Bern in the practice yard he was after a long session of training with wooden blades with Osgar, the veteran scarred weapon trainer. Bern was bruised and hurting as Osgar was tough as leather and despite his years moved like viper striking at unprotected arms and shines.

Thus sweaty and bruised Bern made his way to meet his commander only to find the king himself, the same king Bern had summoned when he fought the shadow. Slightly embarrassed on his dishevel appearance, Bern bowed and lowered his head "Sire, I am at thee command."

The king offer came at a good time for Bern, he had started to feel the itch once more, the need for the road and the chance to find more treasure. "It will be my honor to serve my king and city sire, where will I be traveling?"

Re: 000- Bern Asheye (personal)
King Bard took no notice of Bern's disheveled appearance, he himself was dressed simply, in the garb of the Guard.
"Friend Bern, as you may know, a Council was held here, after our celebrations for the five anniversary of the Battle.  However, we we of Dale and the Esgaroth were the only Men present, no one came from the West of Mirkwood."
He shakes his head, sadly.
"I would rejoice to have at least civil dealings and exchange of information with our Kin from the Woods as well as with the proud Beornings.  Would I that you see about meeting the Council of the Woodmen, and with Beorn, and seeing if they would accept to open parlay with us, and maybe see about who I could send, or if they would travel to Dale."
Then he smiles:  "Beorn is a dour fellow, and it might be good if you were able to render some service for him or his folk before even asking to meet with him!".

"My liege, in my travels I have met and befriend one of Beorn man, a honorable soul and a mighty warriors that I trust like my own blood." Bern says as he consider the kings word "If it pleases my lord, send with me a pair of missives one to Beorn and to the council of Woodmen and I will make sure they arrive."

Bard hands you two small leather flat-cases, with no markings:  "These contain the missives.  Travel well, faithful Bern, and further the cause of the Free Peoples.  As we of Dale know well, it is not by standing alone that one can weather the Enemy's assaults, so I hope the Men of the Anduin Vales and West-Mirkwood will join the Council of the North."

He then takes a bow in hand, and smiles to all present, speaking loud and clear to his Guards:  "Let us train!".

As Bern prepared for his journey West in this early Spring, gathering equipment and bidding good-bye to his fellow Men of the King, he got news that two Dwarves had come looking for him.

OOC:  please feel free to react here, and then we can move to 003- TA2946, end of year (1st Fellowship Phase) for the trip West.

Bern take the leather cases and places them carefully in his trunk "That I shell..." he says fighting the urge to leave now.

When the king offered to train Bern face was flushed with excitement, it was a rare honor to be allowed to train with the legendary king Bard Dragon slayer. Picking his own bow he went to the yard with the king to learn from the best of Dale archers.
