Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Chris K

Chris K notices a dog watching him from just within the nearby treeline. It looks neither friendly nor scared; instead, its observation has a strange sense of purpose.

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

After dispatching the last walker, Chris clambers out the back of the truck, bringing his M4, cleans his knife on the a dead zed and walks round to the front to talk to the others.

"Well, that didn't go as well as hoped, but it worked. We'll need to get some spears or something for that to work better. Keep. looking. at. me. Over by the tree line is a dog watching us. I think it may belong to someone who is also watching us, so when we get out of the pickup, keep your eyes peeled ok." He waits for everyone to nod before continuing.

"Vivian, I think you should stay in the truck, and back it up like before.  If we need to bug out in a hurry everyone needs to get into the pickup bed. The rest of us are going to carefully check these zeds and vehicles for anything useful, before we clear the road. Watch yourself around the cars - check underneath them before closing up. Check the car before opening it. If there are any with zeds in we'll deal with them all togethor. Everyone happy with that?" Again waiting for nods, Chris goes round to the back of the truck, and opens the pickup tail gate, leaving it open, before starting work on the task of checking the zeds and vehicles. As the others come out, he talks to them asking them how they are doing, and reminding them to keep in sight of each other. He keeps a commentary on what he is doing going, and encourages them to do the same, so everyone can hear that everyone else is ok. He will also keep an eye on the dog, and see if he can spot anyone else in the treeline near it

Once the vehicles and zeds are checked, they will re group

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Chris K

The group gets to work scavenging their surroundings. Vivian busies herself with the corpses, giving each body a boot to the head as she approaches and then rifling through their bags and pockets. Rose approaches one body, but then visibly cringes in disgust as she comes close to touching it, turning instead to check the vehicles. Sid carries the jerry can and rubber tubing, but while Chris K notices she checks under vehicles for lurking walkers as per his instructions, she is the least diligent about staying in everyone else's line of sight.

Chris K's efforts are rewarded. Despite the distraction of watching his teammates and the dog, he is able to turn up some useful supplies.  When he checks the dog, he does not see its owner. He does see, however, several other dogs of various breeds - not just next to the dog, but here and there, spread out as if to form a semi-circle perimeter around the group.

Checking on the group again, he sees Rose peeking under a family sedan. Looking satisfied, she stands and looks through a window, cupping her hands to her face to block out the sunlight and its reflection on the glass. Chris K hears a thump of something hard on the window, and then Rose scream for a second as she falls back onto the road, revealing a walker's face pressed against the window.

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Chris heads over to Rose, and helps her up before checking the walker in the vehicle, making sure its alone.

"Your alright Rose, it can't easily get to you unless it breaks the glass. Which it will do eventually. So we'll deal with it. On my Count, you open the door hard and get back out of the way, I'll take it out."

do we need to sue SUs for fuel, or do we just assume Sid gets some?

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Chris K

Vivian and Sid arrive just after Chris K, but Rose is already waving Chris K's reassurances away.

"I - I know that," Rose says shakily, getting to her feet. "It just surprised me! After we killed all of them, I didn't think..."

She sighs, then takes up position next to the door. On Chris K's count, she pulls the door open and then backs up fast. The walker half-lunges, half-falls out of the vehicle, landing on the road in front of Chris K. It's as easy a target as he could ask for, and he dispatches it easily.

There does not seem to be any other danger within the vehicle.

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Now they are all togethor, CHris will talk to them "The dog I saw before? I am not sure it is with anyone, but it is part of a pack, which may be a danger to us. As we work now, we need to think of quick routes to cover. If your near a vehicle, check its clear inside, and if you can open the door, as we may need to take cover if the pack attacks. I am hoping they'll just scavenge the Zeds when we move on. Everyone ok with that?" He looks around at each member of the group, waiting for a nod, and then at the vehicles blocking the way, trying to work out which vehicles they'll need to move to get the pickup through.

ooc
Not sure what roll it would be to try and work out which vehicles will need to be moved, but the aim will be to just roll them out of the way - not bothered if they get ditched or similar.

Heres a roll, anyway

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Chris K

Chris K's warning changes everyone's behaviour regarding the dogs. Before, the group was paranoid of a sharpshooter's surprise attack but was making an effort not to rubberneck; now, they are more obviously watching the side of the road from which the dogs are approaching. If the dogs have noticed the group's attention, they give no sign of caution; they approach closer, the semicircle closing around the group.

It's easy to identify the best vehicles to move off the road, but some of their doors are locked. The group will have to break into them to set them to neutral and push them off the road. Enough of the cars are unlocked that they could also clear the road without breaking into any cars, but it would take longer.

As per Chris K's orders, no one runs. The dogs are clearly domestic breeds, however, and apparently read something in the humans' body language. A moment after they start moving, they break into a run almost simultaneously, charging the four.

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Chris K

Sid and Vivian react surprisingly quickly. Sid runs back to the truck, opening the door and sliding into the front seat. Vivian gets there at almost the same time, but defying Chris K's orders, she stops by the driver's side door, leveling her gun at the approaching dogs.

Rose breaks for the truck as well, but as she watches the approaching dogs, she fails to notice the corpses lying in the street. Tripping over a sprawled torso, she lands hard on the road and is set upon by the lead dogs. A Labrador retriever reaches her first; while she tries to kick it away, it bites down on her leg hard enough to draw blood. Meanwhile, Vivian jumps back to avoid an Irish setter, bringing her gun to bear.

Chris K's position in the truck bed puts him far enough from the dogs to delay his attacking him by a few seconds. One of the lead dogs, a pit bull, leaps up into the truck bed, seemingly with its eyes on him.

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Chris K

Chris K fires his rifle into the charging bull, hitting it in the shoulder. The dog stumbles, but doesn't fall, and charges forward to clamp its powerful jaws down on his calf.

Ahead of the truck, Rose kicks at the Labrador retriever with her free foot, but can't connect a solid blow. Ignoring the setter at her side, Vivian levels her pistol and fires, catching the retriever. It makes a pained yelping sound, but the sound is muffled as it continues to gnaw at her leg. A moment after Vivian fires, the Irish setter leaps onto her back and bites at her neck, but catches her shoulder instead, tearing at her jacket and the flesh beneath.

Sid leans out from the truck's driver's side door, stabbing at the dog with her Swiss army knife, but the dog drops away from Vivian's back before Sid can get in a solid blow. Meanwhile, more dogs close in on the group, including some from the opposite side, towards the gas station.  As they do, however, the door to the gas station slams open as a walker stumbles out into the morning sun, followed by another close behind.

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Chris K

With the pit bull clamped on his leg, it's relatively easy - if someone nerve-wracking - for Chris K to fire the rifle down into its body. This second dose of hydrostatic shock seems too much for the already wounded, and the dog jerks before collapsing to the truck bed's floor, whining in pain. Its legs kick feebly as Chris K turns his attention to the others.

Rose tries to kick at the Labrador retriever again, but the dog jerks her leg to the side, spinning her in a slow circle and causing her foot to go wide. Vivian levels her pistol, but the Irish setter clamps its legs down on her left arm, drawing blood and jerking her off balance. Her pistol fires uselessly into the air as the retriever releases Rose's leg and jumps up onto her, biting down at her face and throat. It's all she can do it fend it off, blood spilling down the retriever's jaws as it tears into her forearms instead. Meanwhile, another dog - a beagle with dried blood in its scruffy fur - rushes into the fray, hoping to capitalize on the prone, wounded human.

Sid tries to stab the Irish setter, but her movements lack confidence, unable to land a hit on the dog with her tiny Swiss army knife. Meanwhile, the walkers continue to shamble towards the truck. It's unclear whether they're aiming for the living humans or the dogs sandwiched between them and the truck, but if it's the dogs, the interest is one-way - the canines show no desire to attack the shambling ghouls.

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Chris K

Chris K aims down at the Irish setter and fires, catching it in the hindquarters. It's not a kill shot, but the dog yelps in pain and jumps back, releasing Vivian. Vivian pushes forward, stepping away from the truck and firing her gun at the dogs attacking Rose. The Labrador retriever jerks and steps back, turning its head towards either Vivian or Chris K - it's not clear which - and then the approaching walkers.

"Viv, wait!" Sid calls out as Vivian steps towards Rose. She sticks a leg out of the truck, but hesitates, anxiously watching the dogs. Meanwhile, the beagle snaps at Rose, biting down onto her shoulder. Rose tries to hold it back, but is overpowered, groping uselessly at its head and shoulders with fading strength.

Ok I have a plan, but not sure on how were set up. If we drive the vehicle next to Rose, can we put it between her and the walkers? And how far out are they now?

The idea is to get Vivian to drive, Chris will try and deal with the dogs on Rose, then the walkers, while Sid gets Rose into the flat bed, and then we take off slowly.

Also what time is it?

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Chris K

Chris K's shot hits true. He sees the beagle stumble as the round hits it in the upper torso, jumping away from Rose with a howl of pain. With the dog having released her, Chris K can see blood pumping from a wound on Rose's shoulder where it meets her neck. She weakly puts a hand on the injury to stop the bleeding, but even that simple action she does slowly and clumsily.

Vivian, already halfway to Rose, either does not hear or refuses to acknowledge Chris K's orders and runs forward. The Labrador retriever and the beagle put on a meager show of growling at her, but are clearly not willing to defend their meal - partially because they are already wounded, but more due to the approaching walkers, which clearly intimidate them.

Vivian puts a hand under Rose's free arm and tries to pull her, but she is much smaller than the injured woman and can barely budge her. After a few seconds of futile tugging, she drops her arm and steps over her, leveling her pistol at the approaching walkers.

"Get her in the truck!" she shouts, glancing back at Sid and Chris K. "I'll hold them off!"

Act 5-C: The Violet Hour

Chris K

Sid slides into the passenger seat as Chris K jumps in, reflexively fidgeting with the seat belt for a moment before releasing it as Chris K shifts the car into reverse. Fortunately, the dogs give no sign of pressing the attack; between the casualties they've already taken and the walkers looming over their meal, they seem unwilling to come any closer. They do not, however, leave.

As Chris K reverses the truck, he sees Vivian fire her pistol in the rear-view mirror. One walker's jaw shatters, individual teeth scattering with a spray of brackish blood, but the walker itself is not killed and continues forward without flinching. Meanwhile, the slide on Vivian's pistol locks back, her magazine empty. She glances at it, brow furrowed, as the truck stops next to Rose.
