Act 5-C: The Violet Hour
Chris K
"Yeah," Sid whispers guiltily.
Though the convenience store is decently sized, the shopping area accessible to customers still consists of only one room. The front entrance is the only way in or out without entering the employee-only areas. The shelves are tall and numerous enough that there are blind spots within the room, and that Chris K cannot see the others from some points in the store, but it is small enough that they can probably track his location by the sound of his movements unless he makes a deliberate effort to be quiet.
Even then, moving about this place quietly would be a challenge. The contents of most shelves have been spilled on the floor and then spread out haphazardly. The chaotic, directionless nature of the mess suggests that it was probably the walkers that spilled and scattered everything, by accident.
The good news is that there is plenty of merchandise left in the store. The bad news is that it is of questionable value. Anything that could spoil, has spoiled; the smell of rot, already intense throughout the store, gets so strong near the glass doors of the long-depowered drink displays that he wants to gag. Mold is visible spreading across cartons of milk, and glass juice bottles contain separated liquids of strange and disgusting colours. Several packages of candy have been torn open by blindly plodding feet, but Chris K can find some intact ones if he looks; however, their nutritional value beyond simple calories is questionable. Simple reading material such as newspapers and magazines are similarly damaged, but again, he can find intact ones if he looks. With some creativity, he could probably get genuine use out of some products like disposable lighters and so on, but the convenience store did not seem to sell medical supplies.
