"Doc" Woods - Chapter 2: The Needle & The Damage Done
Five days pass with little incident.  You've been in and out of consciousness for part of it as one or two of your herd were a little more juiced up than you would have liked, but, such is the nature of heroin.  Funny, you've had friends die from that evil drug, and yet, you kept right on using.  You've seen the conditions that people who use the drug live in because they spend all of their money on it, but you kept right on sticking needles in your arm.  You've seen people who were friends since childhood, fight and kill each other over the last hit, yet you kept right on suckling at the teat of your self-poisoning habit.  Not even unlife, with it's supernatural stamina and fortitude could stop you from your true love.

Sometimes, you wonder, "Am I that worthless?  How can one person be so smart, and yet, so stupid all at the same time?"  How did that damned pop song from when you were in college?  There she goes.  There she goes again.  Racing through my veins and I just can't contain the feeling that remains.   Yeah, that's about right.  She's a hell of a lover, but she's one hell of a bitch at the same time.  Duality.  That's what it's about.  Being two things at once.  That's it's nature.  Wanting one thing and not being able to resist another.  Freedom is tempting, but it's draw is nowhere near as strong as that hellish nightmare that people willingly start using just so they can get hooked after just a few uses.  "It'll never happen to me."  Isn't that what they all say?  Did you?  You can't remember, but the shame you feel in the depths of your soul tells you that, at one time, you probably did.  That's what everybody says...

One night, one of those nights when you're actually sober that is, you go to check your messages under the dumpster and, lo and behold, there is one that night.  In a blank envelope marked "Doc" is a message from Gray...

"Maalouf says to tell you that the regular city-wide meeting will be tomorrow night, whatever that shit is supposed to mean.  I swear to Jesus, I didn't say nothing about you to him.  It's like he already knew.  Peace."

You assume this is supposed to mean city Conclave, but in the drug-addled mind of kine, it could mean anything.

Meanwhile, the usual sounds of the city slums echo in your pointed ears...

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 2: The Needle & The Damage Done
I know full well why I use the heroin, why I started wrecking my mind and body with various poisons, culminating in the nastiest one I could find. Do you know what it's like to be so smart that every single other person you talk to comes across like the guy from Sling Blade? Do you know what it's like to have no friends because nobody can possibly relate to you? I do. I have all my life. When the juice kicks in, it puts me on a more level playing field. I can barely think, I am just like everybody else then, just a regular guy that stumbles through life, barely able to grasp anything he sees or does. I don't like to think about this! Why are the voices in my head bothering me again, trying to make me feel worthless! Just because I chose not to use my skills, not to elevate myself above all the morons...SO WHAT! It's better, better to just be one of the masses, the ignorant stupid masses. No pressures, no responsibilities beyond finding the next fix.....easy, simple.

GAH, enough self reflection. This is why I calm my mind in the first place, to avoid all this damn thinking!

I'll make ready to go to the council, but why is the Brujah primogen the one telling ME about the meeting rather than my own? Christ, he must suspect something. Oh well, not going would only be worse.

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 2: The Needle & The Damage Done
You make your way, however you wish, to the Sands Hotel, the location Prince Travers uses for official business.  Once, you get there, you proceed around to a back alley and enter the sewer access that leads under and into the hotel.

You see a few faces that you recognize as people file in and the meeting starts.  Most of them, you don't know well, but you know their names.  As you settle into your seat, you see Maalouf in his at the dais.  He doesn't even look in your direction.  He's more entrenched with glaring at the Prince.

All of the city's movers and shakers are present tonight.  At the dais, you can see all the Primogen, the Prince, and the Giovanni counsel, Brunella, that most kindred still wonder why she has any influence here.  It's rumored that the Prince is in league with them and their dealings, both financial and ones of a darker nature.

As Prince Eli stands, the crowd quiets down.  He has an aura to him.  Not in the "emotional color" sense, but in the "air of awe" sense.  He steps to the podium, loosens his tie just enough to give the illusion of commonality, and begins his opening speech.  His manner of speech reminds you of the old Foghorn Leghorn cartoons that you watched on Saturday mornings as a child, if they had a bent for evangelism.  He speaks with a defined, yet not over-pronounced countrified accent.

"Ladies and gentlemen of our beloved city of Las Vegas, I welcome you all to another glorious moment for all of us to come together and discuss matters of great import.  And we do indeed have some matters of great import to discuss tonight, do we not, ladies and gentlemen?"

"The situation, in our city has deteriorated to a level that I, for one, am more than slightly disgusted with.  We agreed long ago when I took over this position as the voice of the kindred of Las Vegas that we would all work together to rid this fine city of all those things that live up to the sad stereotypes of sin, distrust, greed, and lust that our city has had to endure since the early 1940's.  Those of you that were here then...  You remember what our city was in those days.  Rife with Sabbat influence around every corner.  Anarchs at our backdoor, begging for handouts to our faces and then attempting to poison our kine, and in turn our brothers and sisters, with their hideous drugs."

"We overcame those things!  We drove out the monsters that tried to consume us!  We...  did...  that!  And I assure you, my brothers, my sisters, that we will overcome this trial that the outsiders, the non-believers in our cause, have brought upon us.  Even now, as Sheriff Afshar has informed me," He motions to the Sheriff as he mentions him, who stands almost at the end of stage left, "we have been besieged by a warren of Wererats in our sewers and flood tunnels.  We have taken measures to relieve the problem, but, of course, any and all help would be appreciated.  Any of you kind folks that would like to volunteer for this task may report to the good Sheriff himself for further details."

"Now, my blessed friends and family, as per our usual plans for an evening such as this, I open the floor to you, my fellows.  Please, step forward in an orderly fashion and we, your council of guides, will try to assist you in the most expedient manner possible."

He motions to the small crowd of 50 or so with a sweeping gesture...

I'm certainly not going to step forward into the spotlight, but will pay rapt attention to any who do. The rhetoric against drugs certainly alarms me.

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 2: The Needle & The Damage Done
A scrawny-looking woman stands and speaks.  She has literally dirty blonde hair that stands at attention in numerous directions as if by it's own decision and her what was once white dress, heavily stained with various fluids from the look of it, is tattered and threadbare in spots.  When she speaks, her voice has the quality of a rusty nail that's been smoking cigars for the last 3 or 4 decades...

"I am called Belle.  I speak for clan Gangrel.  We want to know what is being done about about the strip mining outside of town in Providence that is threatening our city's beloved wildlife?"  The 'our' is so riddled with disdain that if it were a dagger, it's poison would kill with but a simple prick.  "They have suffered long enough at the hands of the kine and their lust for golden treasures.  This city is rife with it and you, our guiding council do nothing but wallow in it.  We want something done or we will have no choice but to take matters into our own clawed hands."

The Ventrue Primogen stands and approaches the podium.  Tonight, he is dressed in a black suit with matching cowboy boots and hat.  Around his neck is a gaudy bolo tie.  It's clasp is a reclining nude form of a woman, sort of like you would see on a mudflap.  His voice has a rich, yet nasally, hint of a southern twang.

"Pardon me, Coach Eli, but can I field this one?  I think this hits me harder than it does you, if you'll excuse my impudence..."

Travers nods and steps back.  He sits.

"Now, Ms. Belle," he begins, "if you'll look all around this great city that all these fine kindred in the room, some of which have been here long before even myself; you look at all of those kine that roam our Strip and grasp at the straw of a better life, and you will see plenty of folks that are just pleased as punch that we have all this greed in this town.  All of that greed keeps us in one of the most rich feeding grounds in all of the US of A.  I think that's a good thing, if you ask me.  And I think most everyone here would agree to that.  Wouldn't you?"  He looks out and motions to the crowd.  A few emphatic hollers come forth.  "You see, Ms. Belle.  Now, if you want to take matters into your own hands on this mining operation over in Providence, then I suggest you do it through the proper channels.  I'd hate to think what would happen if we got word that that place exploded or something else like that..."  He glares at her.

She storms off from the Conclave.  4 or 5 others who were sitting around her get up and leave when she does.  One of them says something to the effect of this not being the last of it.

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 2: The Needle & The Damage Done
The Prince motions to the crowd to continue...  A grey-suited man with slicked back black hair steps up.  His attire is immaculate.

"I am Grayson Meneo.  I am here on the behalf of myself and a group of my friends.  We want to know what can be done about the problems we've been having with a group of roughs.  We're being systematically harassed by this group of Brujah punks!  They constantly attack and kill our retainers.  They have planted a bomb in my car which luckily I discovered in time..."

The Prince cuts him off from his chair.  "Now, son, I have told you countless times that this is not the appropriate forum for personal grudges.  I do appreciate your situation, but if you will concert your efforts and concerns to Sheriff Afshar, I'm sure that he can help you in some way.  Now, if there's no other business, we will adjourn.  I'm sure you all have active unlives and things to do this fine night in our beautiful city.  I bid you all that Lady Luck be with you all tonight in whatever it is that you do."

No one else steps forward.  You can see that another Nosferatu is making his way to the Sheriff along with a few others, probably to lend their service to the Ratkin problem.  A few others remain seated, talking to each other.  Still more gather outside the exit to catch up or just converse about the weather.  Most everyone else files out of the building and back onto the streets.

If this ratkin thing is real, and affects my beloved sewers I should at least probably see what is going on with it. I will head over there to hear what is being said.

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 2: The Needle & The Damage Done
You make your way over to the Sheriff's area.  When you get there, you see that a group of three others have gathered with him.  One is another Nosferau, wearing a roughly stitched, leather mask.  It is populated by sparse, short, grey to black hair.  Of the other two, one is a woman dressed in a green flannel shirt, jeans, and combat boots.  Her hair is close cropped on the sides and long, blue, and sprayed to stand straight up.  The last one is a short man, nearly a midget, in slacks and a white polo shirt.  His head is shaved.

"Seriously, rat people?" the short one starts the conversation, "Eh, fuck it, I'm in."

"The Prince called them 'Wererats'," asks the punk rock girl, "izzat like werewolves?  Does that mean we need to bring silver bullets or something?"

A few more general questions come from the three of them about the nature of the mission that they may undertake.

"Ehhh, excuse me but where exactly are these things? I mean I've never seen one. Where about in the sewers are they supposed to be?"

The Sheriff answers your question and the others.  He has a middle eastern accent encased in a rich, booming voice.  It sounds Persian possibly.  He is dressed in a flowing robe with a sword sheathed on his left hip.

"The Ratkin can be fierce warriors when cornered.  They are quite good at stealth and can sneak up on some of even the most vigilant.  Legend tells that they can transport themselves through another realm and appear out of nowhere to attack.  As I am told, silver works as well against them as it does a werewolf."  He looks at you.  "As for your question, as far as we can tell, they stay mostly in the west side of the city, but reports of them sighted in the western most parts of Paradise and Southfork.  Now, those of you who wish to volunteer should meet me in Sermon's Park in Spring Valley in two days time.  Bring whatever equipment that you feel necessary."

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 2: The Needle & The Damage Done
Doc wanders away from the gathering, glad others are on the task. In the light of this new revelation that the Prince is anti-drug, and knowing from Gray that Maalouf is a big mover and shaker, I will see if there is an opportunity to talk to him alone. If not, I will wait till later and simply call him. I would also welcome a moment with the Prince if it looks like he is approachable and willing.

You can speak to either of them at your leisure as long as it doesn't take too long with either.  Maalouf is still sitting at his seat.  He appears to be reading a book.  The Prince is talking to Brunella Giovanni.

I'm thinking I'll just call Maalouf. I don't really want to risk being seen or heard talking about things the Prince just condemned. I will approach the Prince then, and politely wait till he acknowledges me so as to not interrupt his talk.

When he addresses me: "My Prince.(bow) I will not take up your time, but for sake of the traditions and not wanting to violate another's territory, might I ask if you could tell me who if anyone holds sway over the hospitals?
