"It's Doc Woods. I'm out of detox and I see that things are upside down. I was hoping to talk to you as you're one of the only people I have trust in. I was hoping to get your assessment of the current lay of the land."

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 3: Of Rats and Men
"Yes of course".

I'll take the hint and not try to push my luck. I'll try again the next night. Sounds like I may as well take a rest for the night. I need to think of my next moves, as I've really been thrust unprepared into a new landscape. I'm clean and focused, but have nothing yet to be focused on. I really want no part of a war, and the men at the mine are far too much to deal with. I must think. Perhaps after I talk to West tomorrow I will have a better idea of what to do.

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 3: Of Rats and Men
Shortly after you get back to your place (I assume the house as it's the closest to the hospital), you get a call from West.

"Sorry to brush you off like that, but I had two of those damned Giovanni bastards in here when you called.  They're all over this place.  Brunella is pissed and she's looking for you.  What in the hell did you do, man?"

"Anyway, tomorrow night, meet me at Nanay Gloria's around 10.  It's at 2810 S Maryland Parkway.  We'll talk about it there.  Shit.  Gotta go, they're coming back."

He abruptly hangs up.

I'll be sure to go there. I'll take the gun loaded with regular, but keep a speedloader of silver in my pocket. I'll leave the blade, it's too big for a public place. I'll go early, about an hour, and scout the place out.

It's a Filipino buffet place.  Looks quiet other than patrons...

Alright. I'll look presentable to the public, and wait outside for West. I'll remain hidden until after he goes inside. I'll wait a few minutes to watch for tails on him, and if all is clear, I will go in.

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 3: Of Rats and Men
All quiet.  You head in and see him browsing through the market half of the establishment.

"Hey, glad you could make it.  Yeah, I know a restaurant...  I might not be able to eat any of it, but damned if I don't love the smell.  I used to eat here back in my breathing days, you know.  Great adobo."

"So, anyway, Brunella's got the hospital crawling with goombas.  Every entrance is covered and a few roam the halls.  I don't know what you did, but they're looking for you.  They keep coming by the morgue every half hour or so.  It's getting annoying as fuck just trying to get a moment's peace around there.  I had to get out.  Besides, now that Eli's not blackmailing me, I can come and go as I want.  Brunella's too busy and no one else but you knows who I am.  It's nice to be free again."
  He smiles.

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 3: Of Rats and Men
"Sorry for the hassle. I'll level with you, you deserve that. You remember me asking you about a kindred female? Well if you didn't figure it out since, that was the new Prince. I just wanted to know who the hell I stumbled across, and the first person that actually knew her was Faraz. So they loaded her up, and I guess she took her city back. I can't be held accountable for what happened. I mean, I can but I shouldn't. I could have just as easily asked Travers, and he would have probably killed her, it was dumb luck either way. As far as where I've been, like I said Travers helped me detox, so I was in a locked room for a damn month. I came out to find all...this has happened.

Not to mention there's like a damn dragon in the mines. So I don't know what to do. I didn't want part in a war."

"Dragon?  What the fuck have you been smoking, man?  I'll level with you.  I trust you and I believe most of what you tell me, but this is a little over the top.  Where did you hear that?"

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 3: Of Rats and Men
"Well, I say dragon because that's the closest thing I can think to call it. I didn't hear it anywhere, I stood 30 feet from the damn thing. So I have no idea what's going on with that, but it sure looks like Brunella is going to use it as a weapon or something. I didn't want Travers dead, I mean the guy helped me out big time. Things got out of control real fast. So you said free...is whoever was threatening you leaving you alone now? If so, maybe it was Travers all along. If you have a number for Brunella, I'll probably call her, try to explain things...from nice and far away."

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 3: Of Rats and Men
"Yeah, it was Eli blackmailing me the whole time...  Wait, you said you saw it?  Damn, you're braver than I am.  From what I hear, there's more goons at the mine than there are at Summerlin.  Jeez, you must have huge balls.  As for Madame Giovanni, yeah.  Here's her card."  He holds out a gold embossed business card.  "Keep it, I don't need it.  Tell you the truth, I'm thinking of getting out of the hospital business.  I figure with my," he clears his throat, "talents maybe I should go into body mod work or something."

Re: "Doc" Woods - Chapter 3: Of Rats and Men
"Well if it was Travers then I don't feel so bad about his death. It's not really balls by the way. The goons were spread outside and aren't Kindred, no way they were gonna see me. If that ....thing, hadn't been asleep, I never would have gotten that close. Well, whatever you do by all means stay in touch. You're as close to a friend as a Kindred is allowed to have, so I'm always willing to help out if I can. Might not be around that long if Brunella is gunning for me though, have to see about that. Let me make sure I have a personal number for you."

When we are done, I'll go elsewhere and call from a payphone to Brunella.

He gives you his number with a final warning, "Keep in mind, Doc, some of those goons are Kindred.  Not many of them, mind you, but there's a few made men who were made a long time ago..."

Then, you call Brunella...

"Ah, Mr. Woods.  How nice to hear your voice.  Yes, I have indeed been searching for you.  You see, I'm not very pleased with your performance lately.  Eli Travers was a dear friend of mine and business associate and due to your actions in recovering our newly returned Prince, I am in dire straits.  Perhaps we could arrange a meeting in a more face to face setting?  I'll give you a chance, but only if you come to see me.  If you refuse, I assure you, we will still have our meeting, but it will not be under friendly circumstances."

"Blaming me for all this is completely off base. I was sent to pick up an unrelated box, and she just happens to be in there. I had no idea who she was so I asked around. The fact I was sent there proves someone already knew she was there, and knew I'd find her."

"Now, see, this is why I wanted to find you, Mr. Woods.  This is information that I did not have.  If you'll tell me who it was that sent you on this errand, I would be more than happy to double check the information and, if it proves true, focus my efforts on a more appropriate target."

"Yeah no problem. I would have told you way before but I was locked up. Maalouf is the one that handed me the address, right down to the crate number. I got no loyalty to him, I don't appreciate being set up like this and getting put in a tight spot over what I was told was just making a pick up. He's vanished though so that's another oddity."

"Even more odd...  Why would he let you find the one person he help conspire to get rid of?  And why didn't he do his job and have her put out of our misery?  thank you, Mr. Woods.  Unless you have something more to add, you must excuse me.  I have pressing matters to attend to with this new information."

"Yeah well one more thing, though I don't expect you to confide but I'll ask anyway. What on earth are you doing at the strip mine? At the risk of pissing you off, it seems like you're messing with shit that should be destroyed."

"Originally, it was just business, but with in the light of these new developments...  Well, honestly, I don't see where it's of any importance to a neonate such as yourself.  Just keep in mind that the Giovanni have things well in hand.  That is all you need to know.  I'm not going to ask on this.  I'm telling you...  Stay away from the mine.  If you persist in this investigation, you'll have no safety anywhere in this city."

I'll choke down the retort I had in mind that while clever and biting, would only add more problems to my plate.

"Loud and clear". I'll hang up.
