The Oprid

Name: Oplides

Population: 2.059 billion

Atmosphere and Climate:
     Primary Composition: Nitrogen/Oxygen.
     Atmospheric Mass: 0.9 Earths
     Atmospheric Pressure: 0.692 atm (Thin)
     Average temperature: 82F or 301K.
Winds: Strong seasonal hurricanes make landfall in the warm parts of the year, depending on the hemisphere.
Humidity: High humidity throughout the year.
Precipitation:  Heavy rainfall during colder months.

World Size:
Density: 1.05 Earths (large iron core, active magnetosphere)
     Diameter: 7,047 miles (0.89 Earths)
     Surface Gravity: 0.935 G's

Rotation and Orbital Periods:
     Orbital period: 303 days
     Rotation: 21.4 hours
Length of year measured in local days: 339.8 days
     Axial tilt: 4

Hydrographic Coverage: 63% water.  One large ocean holds most of the surface water.  Other inland lakes and seas account for about 2% of the total water.  Small seasonal ice cap located at the north pole.

Land Coverage: 37%.  Dominated by one supercontinent, named Oplid.  Northern point is located at about 61 north of the equator.  Land mass stretches down to the south pole.

The Oprid evolved on the great plains located near the northern edge and in the center of the continent.  These cover a vast area of land in the north as well as in the south.  An equatorial desert also runs across the continent.  Rainforests dot some of the area above and below the equatorial deserts.  Arboreal forests and some tundra cover all of the south pole.

Biological and Psychological Traits
The Oprid are a race of carnivores native to the planet Oplides.  They evolved on a plains habitat and were very good a chasing down prey.  Thin scales cover their body, about the same thickness as human skin.  The color of the scales is usually brown or dark green.  Individuals may also be recognized by the pattern of colors on their scales.  Each Oprid also has unique spines and ridges starting on the head and traveling down to the lower back.  Other identifying features include eye color (green, yellow, blue, or grey).  The most prominent feature of the face is the long and thin snout.  The mouth is full of sharp teeth.  Eyes are set near the start of the snout pointing forward to give them excellent sight.

At some point, they evolved into bipedalism, but kept their digitigrade hind limbs.  Their two legs are still suited to running very quickly and the retractable claws help them gain traction on many types of ground.  Their arms have adapted to provide some level of use as manipulators.  Each hand possesses four fingers and also has retractable claws.

An individual can live for up to 160 years (about 132 Earth years) with current technology, but their lifespan before medicine was around 75 years.  At age 50, couples produce a litter of offspring containing 1 to 6 children.  A couple only produces one litter of children per lifetime and couples are mated for life.  Children reach maturity at age 30 but are usually mated at about age 15 and no later than age 20.  When they find a mate, they leave their parents.

The Oprid are unique for a carnivorous species.  Many other intelligent carnivores have an aggressive disposition, but this is notably reduced in the Oprid.  In their encounters with new species across the galaxy, they fearlessly embrace them into their society.  They prefer the company of others instead of themselves and they can work well in groups.  They also seem to have a strong empathy toward others, and will even go so far as to sacrifice their time, wealth, and even lives to people who are important to them or important to others they care about.

Like all life, they come with their own set of quirks.  As a species, the Oprid see themselves as the best fit to control the direction of galactic society, hence the closest translation for the name of empire is the "Ascendancy."  Coupled with an innate curiosity (some would call it nosiness), they have their hands in everything under their control.  They aren't especially imaginative, however.  Their cultural evolution and discovery of the sciences was very slow.  In modern times, most scientific progress is completed by commission from the Ascendancy and the Oprid are heavily reliant on this cooperation.  Unlike humans, they lack the ability to dream during sleep, and some humans postulate that this is perhaps one of the reasons why they are lacking in imagination.

History and Culture
Opridian history has taken a slow course through the millennia.  Much of their history is similar to human history, extended a much longer period of time.  A notable difference is that they never invented agriculture until well after the creation of cities and city-states.  The Oprid were evolved to chase prey on the prairies, which required a lot energy.  One inventive clan developed techniques to domesticate their most common prey.  This meant less time spent on tracking and chasing prey and more time for other pursuits, such as forming more bonds with different clans and the establishment of roaming villages.  There society remained pastoral for thousands of years until large-scale herding was developed.

The most basic structure in Opridian culture is the clan.  This consists of the parents and a litter of offspring.  The parents control the family until the children are old enough to mate with another and leave.  Historically, litters were born to parents whenever they felt ready for children and generations were a mix of individuals of every age.  In this age, the time of birth has been regulated so there is a new generation every 25 years born to parents of 50 years of age.  In this way, there is always 6 or 7 generations of Oprid living at the same time.  Generations are named according to the current rulers of the Ascendancy.

The Oprid believe in something that translates to "The Greater Good."  They believe they have been entrusted with the safety of the galaxy by a higher force.  It is their responsibility to forge an empire to protect those that need protection.  The concept of the Greater Good arose several centuries before the Oprid first discovered a wormhole in their system.  It gained momentum over the centuries and eventually led to the construction of the generation ships that first led them away from their homeplanet, Oplides.

For centuries, the Oprid traveled the galaxy is these ships, slowly but surely colonizing planets near their wormholes.  During their travels, they saw many new forms of life, but it wasn't until they met the Umuhni that they realized they may not be the only intelligent life in the galaxy.  The Umuhni, being a primitive race, agreed to join the Ascendancy.  Several more centuries passed until they met the Epsians and discovered their construction of a hyperdrive.  From that point, the Oprid have been expanding outward at a faster pace.
