Re: Dark Eyes, Cold Hearts - Shattered Courtyard
Rael was breathing deeply, he had killed and he had done so with his own hand. He was shaking and that he had killed a demon was only a small comfort.

For one brief heartbeat he had a dreaded feeling that this was all some sort of illusion that they actually fought in the inn and were duped by the smoke to think the other tavern patrons were demons.

Fortunately, it proved to be what it was a cruel gauntlet to weed out the weak mercenaries for the job. That he survived to face their employers was a merit on how the gauntlet system did not work.

He moved to stood between Hraal and Viktor, two mountains of flesh and steel that made him feel more protected if not safe "Our employer I reckon, royalty of sort. Does any one of you know how to speak to royalties? in a way that would not get us hanged or worse?"

He hears the woman scream turning to look at Eclair... shock?, hysteria? he did not knew but she must calm down quickly or her weakness would endanger them all.

"Calm down woman..." he whispers at her "Our employer approaches."

Speaking loudly he adds "I will tend to any wounded who needs my skill as soon as we have time and a place to rest."

He did suggested himself as the apothecary of the group, he might as well make himself useful.

Khazim eyes the "jester" as he capers and prances towards the group. In his ears the jingling is an abomination. Having just vanquished the demons and now appearing in a new place he is not feeling particularly trusting.

Khazim moves off to the side slightly and nocks an arrow to his bowstring. He holds his bow in an easy position which still allows him to whip it up and release a shot quickly if necessary. He thinks to himself that communication is not his strongest suit so he will let others take the lead while remaining watchful over the area.

Re: Dark Eyes, Cold Hearts - Shattered Courtyard
Your eyes take in everything about you, from the swirling background, to the all to surreal visions in front of you. The 4'1" Jester prances forward and stops several feet shy of the wreckage of the tavern.

"Tisk, Tisk, Tisk, All the kings horses have fallen. Ohh joyus, Some have decided to stay and play." A glint from his beady eyes shine over a large hooked nose and snaggle-toothed grin. His voice cracking like a nasally prepubescent youth. "Now that the ride has finished please return yourselves to a full upright position and make sure that you have your boarding passes!" A giggle escapes his lips. "I am Astralgyx, your host and tour guide to the Shattered Courtyard, Home of my mistress!" He performs a deep bow, left arm extended, he swishes his hand an a grandiose gesture indicating the area you are in. The bells on his jesters cap tinkle and ring as they brush against the ground. He straightens, follows through with a backflip, landing one knee down, pointing open handed at the figure seated at the throne "The Great and Powerful Pollidemia."

He gets off of his bent knee, Straightens like a stuffy british butler, nose pointed high "She will see you now for your interview." He walks like he has a spear up his arse for several feet before losing his composure. Stopping to see if the beaten and battered group is following he resumes skipping, dancing, and twirling towards the figures seated so far away.

You all begin to gather the few things that you can find among the wreckage. Sadly it seems as if neither Corvus or Spooky had made it through the ordeal. Pieces of flooring, debris, and corpses of demons seem to have been the last gasp of their battered bodies.

She lookedd up at the man chastizing her and frownd blackly the. Looked down at her chest.[Language unknown:  "For for relaulec wa ac!?"] She tried to growl in her deepest voice but it squeaked with fear instead. She also noticed her instincual language skills did not match the word the others were using. She frowned as the problem focused her in a strange way. She was still in an alien place with alien things, but the language issue seemd so important.

She began oncollect herself and stood to inspect her state while her ight hand held he sword limply. She noted a scabard and fumbled with it to put the sword away before focusing first on the strange jester then his mistress beyond. She gazed around the courtyard and back down at the strange corpses with a deep frown. She also noted her injuries. Whatever this was, fever dream, madness, or nightmare, there was no reason to panic... much. She looked at her company and frowned; she assumed they knew her though they were strangers to her, [Language unknown:  "Niit elrich e wheoerthu hi wa? Hoacos loone n?"]

Viktor seem to handle Eclair, Rael tried to recall if the woman had spoken before and if it was in tongue like now. It sounded like a language, alien true but still she was not babbling madly. It's been known to happen before, even strong stout warriors can have their mind shatter from the sight of demons... Rael guessed that what had happened to the woman.

Turning his attention to their royal employer. Taking a step forward he give a courteous bow, like the one he had seen his father make before, "Oh great and powerful Pollidemia we have heed thou summon."

Rael had little, well actually none, interaction with nobles and royalty were supposed to be the same be worse to handle. Think meek, think meek he kept reminding himself.

Feeling somewhat justifiably paranoid after everything that has already happened, Khazim does follow the "jester" to meet Pollidemia but does not shoulder his bow. He does however lower it and take tension off the string. Not having the greatest mastery of Low Speech he decides to let those who it is more native to do any negotiation while he keeps an eye on the surroundings. He definitely did not understand what Eclair was babbling and her current appearance is startling to say the least...

Re: Dark Eyes, Cold Hearts - Shattered Courtyard
By curiosity, Sirens call, or simply not knowing what else to do, you all eventually filter down the long pathway towards the throne. The closer you get, the more things define themselves on this only stable piece of land.

The woman lounging on the throne is wearing a partial mask, much like at a costume ball, with her long dark curly hair frameing out the rest of her face as it cascades down on her shoulders. Draped casually, just barely modestly, is a piece of filmy silk over her lounging form. The only other piece of clothing she wears is a large  royal blue and purple cape that drapes down the throne. As your eyes travel down the scene, you can see that the throne itself is exquisitely carved ivory made from a single huge piece all accented in gold.

Astralgyx prances up to the throne and positions himself to the left side opposite the tall hooded figure. [Private to Khazim: A tiny breeze kicks up. From the direction of the cloaked figure you get a whiff of a smell that reminds you of the Sulfur Flats deep in the wastes.] At the foot of the throne is a corpse, male, dead at least several days. It has become bloated with the skin showing a sickening translucent quality to it. Drawing closer you see that Pollidemia lounges on the throne with a single leg draped across one of the armrests, she lovingly strokes the head of the corpse propped at the foot of the throne, which opens is eyes and gazes upwards in sick adoration at it's mistress.

"Welcome, Astralgyx has just informed me that you have come in response to my offer." Her voice drifts across gap with a husky sensual quality to it. A smile drifts across her features. "I am pleased. It appears that as a whole you are mostly capable of handling some of my pets and therefore I feel that those of you who remain are suited for the task I need accomplished." You see he eyes drift towards the two remaining corpses back at the ruins of the tavern floor. "Fate has told me that you should be well suited for this task." She once again caresses the top of the corpses head. "As for payment, you can understand that I cannot give you payment in full right away, I can however offer part of the payment up front, and part on your return. Is this satisfactory enough? The task, yes, yes, of course. A dear servant of mine has been captured by a rival queen. I need you to simply get him back for me."

She turns and motions towards Astralgyx. "My servant will get you where you need to go and provide you with what information he has gathered. Means of return shall also be provided by him as well" Out of the corner of you eye you see Astralgyx slowly twirling two of the orbs that started the whole journey in his right hand. A sinister, yet jovial, look flashes through his eyes. [Private to Rael Gol: She has been overall honest about everything she has said to this point. There is an underlying sinister excitement about her mannerisms though.]

Re: Dark Eyes, Cold Hearts - Shattered Courtyard
Eclaire continued to try and clean the gunk off her armor. Her hands, when she paid no attention, seemed familiar with the care and maintenance of the metal plates. In her head, words in another language floated up and she mused through them as she cleaned. When she held the image of herself strongly enough, the words were stronger. She had never been good at languages, but this reminded her of trying to learn a language well. She signed and looked up as the woman continued to speak. Her mind, one of them, wanted to rebel at what she was seeing. Well, a part of her mind wanted to rebel more than the other. somehow, part of her was used to the stranger things, just not demons and such.

Still try as she might, when she spoke she could not make her tongue obey her, [Language unknown:  "Ver, Er artarecom herthiiou p u wheionint, me Ei?"] She looked around for denial or confirmation. Maybe, in that she was having this nightmare, she had agreed to this whacked out job offer.

Rael cast a pale worried gaze at Viktor but the huge Pan Tangian kept it cool and was speaking admirably.

Rael was worried, this queen had a predatory glee to her to their suffering and death. She was callous enough to kill some of them just to prove who was worthy. She was a terrible employer to be tied with, yet here they were.

Bowing again with hand spread wide he adds "Your highness offer is very generous and we accept part of the payment now and the rest once we get back." He glance again at Viktor, he asked the important questions so Rael waited for the reply.

Khazim, while cool on the outside, is in turmoil on the inside. He does not like this at all, this lady who commands death. However, being that the group is stuck here he makes a decision based on pragmatism; "Very well, my spear and my bow are available for these tasks you set before us."

Re: Dark Eyes, Cold Hearts - Shattered Courtyard
Pollidemia slides her long exposed leg down over the armrest and plants both of her feet on the floor taking a more attentive position. She slowly raises the back of her hand to her forehead. "It did pain me so to sacrifice those who did not pass the test, however only the strong and resourceful would be able to defeat such an opponent as Media." letting her hand drop he stands and begins to descend the few steps towards the assembled group. "Now, I did mention that Media is an extremely worthy adversary, in addition I mentioned that partial payment would be given up front. How fortunate for you, my payment will be in the form of power to help you!"

She raises her hands into the air and begins to chant in a strangely familiar, yet unidentifiable language. "Quixoram dubois, Allentat sicorum, Bealtant d chansom, Quortorat nominous" You feel the hairs on your forearms begin to rise as the air becomes charged with power. The giant statues that line the courtyard act like giant lightning rods as great blue and purple lightning bolts of power leap between them. Slowly you see the great stone eyelids open and shining black orbs gaze down on you. Slowly an understanding screams in the back of your head They are alive!. Their gaze locks you in spot, as strong as any chain would, silently you struggle to do anything other than have your mind scream in warning.

"Kaloram detat, Kynn K'tal, Quixoram dubetait, Kynn K'Tal..." [Private to Hraal: One of those words, strikes a memory from your youth. You remember reading about a demon breed named Kynn K'Tal. Sadly it was only a footnote along with a Chaos Lord Gashoram.] The rest of her musical chanting drifts off though you can still see her mouth moving. Points of light form over the breast of each of the statues that line the courtyard. Blue-white swirling light slowly forms into an intense image of a heart. The glowing, pulsing, organs begin moving across the space from each statue towards each of you. Slowly, inevitably, the hearts reach your own chest and coldly slide through your armor, flesh, and ribs. A deathly cold spreads from the place where the hearts penetrated.

Pain, sharp intense pain, spreads outwards from your chest as you feel the spectral heart take it's position over your own. The pain slowly subsides, as you feel your own heartbeats slow ... slower ... till it stops.

For a brief second, you are dead.

THUMP, THUMP, THUMP Kettle drums pound your ears and temples as a great coldness sweeps through your body. You feel your heart beating again, but it is not your heart. With sick revulsion you know that the spectral heart has taken over your own. The eyes of the statues slowly close, as they do the grip they held on you is released. Your body sinks to it's knees of it's own accord.

Her body slick with perspiration, Pollidemia lowers her arms, breathing heavily she laughs near demonic laugh of sensual excitement. "How does it feel to have the heart of a supernatural being? Does the power that now flows through you feed your desires!" She calmly takes a step back and sit back on her throne. "I, and only I, can remove those hearts without killing you. Return to me with my subject and the demon hearts will be removed. My servant Astralgyx will take over from here. Farewell and Good journey!"

Re: Dark Eyes, Cold Hearts - Shattered Courtyard
Rael did not had the chance to eat something at the Blunt blade inn and it was fortunate because otherwise he would have spilled the content of his belly on the broken tile floor.

Slowly he picked himself up from the floor not daring to look at the sorceress queen until he would reign his feeling. He knew people like her, his father was just like her using people and tossing them aside when they were no longer useful to him. No doubt their payment would be the removal of the abomination that was now beating in his chest.

"Thank you for your kind gift your highness..." he said keeping his voice low and gaze even lower. "I would like some time to tend to the wounds of my compatriots and to deal with our dead." like it or not the five of them were linked by spell and misfortune.

Re: Dark Eyes, Cold Hearts - Shattered Courtyard
Eclair was just calming, just starting to worry at and think about the situation as it was. Okay, s'a dream and I am sleeping or, or in a coma. Those lights. I was in an accident. Al... Then her thoughts were rather brutally interrupted by the queen freak talking in tongues and she frowned at the woman as her hand went instinctively to her sword hilt, [Language unknown:  "Con, sta p pa moday ev, latsanrat, eve?"]

Her question never warranted and answer as the freaky talk ended and suddenly she was surrounded by black-eyed, giant, stone monsters. Was there no fucking end to her freaky imagination. She watched in paralyzed horrow as some freaky manifestation approached her and penetrated her chest. It was so cold, cold as winter and then some. Was this dying? Was she dreaming of dying. How fucked was that.

THUMP, THUMP, THUMP!

Her chest jumped and jerked and she doubled over and felt a paired creeping sensation flow through her. She wasn't dreaming; she only wished she was dead. Utter horror crept theough her momds as she realized that a monstrous power beat in her chest and a horrow crept through her soul. She had a soul. She groaned and aank to her knees. It was cold and wrong and hot and poweful.

She looked up at the queen and smiled slowly, "Oh? Eclair climbed to her feet and looked at the mad jester blankly, "So?"

Unsure of how the jester moves as he does, you hear him calling from behind you near the ruins of the tavern. "ALL ABOARD FOR ILDARON! Please take your positions and keep all hands and feet inside the smoke at all times as we all know what that can do!" When you turn to look you see that he is wearing an odd shaped dark blue cap. Nearly matching the length of his nose, a stiff brim pokes out under a short cylindrical crown. At the mention of "arms and legs" you can see his pointy jester boots shuffling aside the lost limbs of the unfortunate patrons.

"No tickets needed for the return trip. We depart as soon as your ready!" He pulls a circular medallion attached to a long length of chain out of some hidden pocket in his outfit. The medallion flips apart into two circular halves and he looks down at the divided face. You see the pointed jester shoes quivering impatiently with each impact on the ground as he taps his left foot.

Khazim says not a word but moves towards the destination. The horror he feels at this black magic done upon him is unexpressable. All he can do is try to see this task through to its end and hope that the black magic worked upon him can be reversed. He doesn't know what sort of "power" these demon hearts grant to the group but worries that the price exceeds the benefit, most black magic does.

Rael steel himself as he glance at the bodies of the fallen but first he needed to deal with the living.
Turning to his compatriots he asks "Are any of you hurt? do you need me to tend to your wounds? even a slight cut may be infected with demonic taint that could poison your blood, wither your limbs and have you die in agony." a bit late for that now that they all had demonic hearts...

He glance at the dead "Does anyone of you is willing to help me tend to the dead?" he asks.

Re: Dark Eyes, Cold Hearts - Shattered Courtyard
At the mention of being hurt, a few "facts" have dawned on you. First is that you are feeling better than you have in a long time. Old aches and pains are simply not there. Next you see that all that remains of the fight process you were just in, is a series of scars and a few tender bruises. All in all whatever those hearts did as they took over your body, they healed up as much as they could.
All HP have been reset to full, and beyond a bit of tenderness you are healthy

Both the bodies of Corvus and the masked individual known as "spooky" still lay amongst the wreckage. Their shattered corpses are the only evidence that the demons even existed. During the fight items were scattered about the place. You see "Spooky's" strange scope and rod, a large book, a handheld mirror, several odd cylinders about 2" long with a brass end to them, a Strange black "U" shaped item with tiny bits of glass on each end of the "U", a hand sized silver "t", Around Corvus's neck is a necklace with a tiny conch shell on it. As for weapons you see 2 knives, a Broadsword, and a Quarterstaff.

Impatiently waiting, Astralgyx begins to nudge the toe of his shoes among the items scattered about.

Re: Dark Eyes, Cold Hearts - Shattered Courtyard
This shit was still so fucking far from okay. Despite her momentary realization that she was not dreaming or on drugs, it was still hard for Eclair to accept this world. Her minds felt like it was shaking while her body moved with confidence and grace. She had spotted items that she knew. Well, it was strange in that like a part of her knew what to do with a sword, part of her knew those items there, though they looked strange still.

She strode to where one of her erstwhile companions was apparently attempting to deal with the dead men but she had no interest. They were not nor had ever been her compatriots. The men surrounding her were little more than people stuck in the same problem with her. She crouched down and nudged the silver "t" with a finger before nodding and picking it up. A sense of something comfortable and familiar flowed through her and she glanced at the book as well. She picked it up and flipped through some pages before shoving it in her pack, she grabbed a knife, the u-shaped black thing, the cylinders, and the cloth-wrapped tube on the masked man's backpack then moved toward Rael, "And, what, do, you... want to do with them? Tear up a flagstone and bury them? Say a few words?" The words were clumsy and hesitant like she had only recently learned the language she spoke and she eyed the corpses. "They are dead. They do not care and neither do I."

That said she turned and frowned at the corpse in bodyarmor with a deep frown then touched her forehead, chest, right shoulder, then left shoulder and mumbled a few polite words before looking at the jester, "I do not suppose that a mended set of armor is in the offing?"

Rael shakes his head at both Viktor and Eclair rush to take loot. He ignored Viktor attempt at gruesome humor, Rael has practice healing for a living he saw far worse.

Kneeling next to Corvus he shut the man eyes whispering a silent pray and apologies for the dead. He takes the the remaining knife and stuck them in his own belt "I am sorry friend but I'll need this more than you." he place a copper coin under the man tongue and after a thought he takes the necklace from Corvus neck, if he will find Corvus kin he would return it to them. After a second thought he also pick the mirror as well, it could be useful.

He moves to Spooky mutilated body, lifting the mask from his face to place a coin under his tongue.

Re: Dark Eyes, Cold Hearts - Shattered Courtyard
Seeing all the fuss and preparation that Rael is going through Astralgyx moes over to Rael's side. A gnarly leather skinned hand pulls out and pats him on the shoulder. Somehow the jester outfit had faded to a deep black. Around Astralgyx neck, near the enlarged adam's apple, is a tiny strip of white. "I understand my son. Their presence will be sorely missed. Have no fear however as all of the lords creatures have a place at our mistress's side, for all eternity." He shuffles slowly back to his place. The sentiment would have seemed sincere, if it were not for the jester bells that tinkled with every step and motion. He stops, his beady eyes sparkle, and somersaults a few feet away.

ALL ABOARD, last call for Ildaron! He produces a tiny tin whistle and shrilly blows it. Waiting till the party has once again gathered near the ruins of the tavern floor, Astralgyx chuckles a bit as he produces a familiar looking glass orb from some deep pocket. "Any last words?" he sneers, obviously to low for Pollidemia to hear. Raising the orb high in his hand, he enthusiastically hurls it at the ground causing the orb to shatter releasing the sulfurous yellow fog that quickly engulfs the area.

The familiar feeling of vertigo and rapid motion set your stomachs flipping as you are whisked away on a second trip

This ends Chapter 1. Any X's next to skills that have been gained in the short bit, go ahead and roll for. Anything you want to to special give me a heads up. I'll get the next chapter started in a bit.
