Re: University, by Day or night

In reply to The Uncaring Night (msg # 9):
Arriving at her study group, Sadie is beginning to feel momentarily like an adult again. The shadows are different in the library this time of night, and the lights shine out of the large windows brightly into the darkness. The dark itself has taken on an oppressive character due to the feeling of being observed during her walk, and her nerves had carried over. The black seemed to press against the windows coldly and thickly. She admonishes herself inwardly; only children are afaid of the dark. Which Sadie has no way of knowing is simply not true. For the next 3 hours at least, she turns her attention to the four older students and discussions of groups of various molecules and compounds. The last hour they spend prompting each other to recite compound names and brushing up on valence electrons for the first 50 elements. Anything beyond the metals was exotic enough that an undergraduate would not be dealing with them anyway.

Sadie walks toward the large automatic glass doors in the front of the library. Two of the group members had come the same way; a blond girl Jen, and skater looking guy Ryan. Sadie likes Jen. She is gentle-hearted and willing to hold friendly conversation with a girl 4 years younger. Though Sadie did not always understand every reference or comment, Jen was always kind about it.

The glass doors slide open at their approach, admitting the evening chill. Sadie is suddenly very glad she doesn't have to walk alone. Jen turns to Sadie saying "oh, I forgot! I have to drop my lit paper in my professor's box. The deadline is tonight." Sadie pales a little, but does her best not to appear nervous. She will have to walk alone. Ryan is already gone. She thinks about calling campus security, but quickly dismisses the idea. It's just the dark, she is being such a baby! If she's lucky, maybe Jen didn't notice. "I'll see you at the dorm later" she says, sounding very much like a scared child.

After a minute of walking the lights of the library have faded. Sadie remembers something in the school paper about students requesting better lighting on several areas of campus. Tonight she whole heartedly agrees with the motion.

Her hair rustles a bit, and and her clothes shake a bit under a strange wind... she feels something sinister is near, and lurking in the shadows, for a second she can see two pinpricks of Yellow, seeming to gleam like Malicious eyes, yet if she shines a flashlight at it, she'll find no one nearbye.

Re: University, by Day or night

Every real and imagined fear runs through Sadie's mind. Her heart seems to thud against her ribs, and a cold sweat covers her forehead. With every step her body screams at her to run. Her pride keeps it to as fast a pace as she can walk. She turns her head away from the the watching eyes; she doesn't want to see them. If she ignores them they are not real; they couldn't be real anyway.

After an eternity of walking she sees the light of her dorm building. Her nerve shatters, and she runs the last hundred yards to the safety of the dorm porch. She rests her head against the concrete with her gaze directed upward at the beautiful, bright enterance light. The cool breeze seems to holds no menace anymore, and she sits bathed in the artificial light to catch her breath. It was past her bedtime, and she has a 7am class.

Sadie pulls her covers up, relieved to be warm and safe. She had set her cellphone alarm to 6am. She doesn't need much time to get ready in the morning, as she doesn't wear makeup and breakfast is usually a simple bowl of oatmeal.

As she tries to drift off to sleep, the image of yellow unfriendly eyes burns behind her eyelids. The feelings of unease and fear tonight will not soon be forgotten.

Re: University, by Day or night

In reply to The Uncaring Night (msg # 15):

Despite trouble getting to sleep last night, Sadie was asleep before Jen made it in. She had dressed quietly, knowing Jen didn't have class until 10am. Jen was not a morning person. She made her bed, placing her pink plush stuffed rabbit near her pillow. She had disguarded all her stuffed animals, dismissing them as too childish. She simply could not bring herself to leave behind her favorite however. She slept with it every night.

The walk to Sadie's 7am history class was short. It seemed too short on a morning as lovely as this. The grass was still wet with dew, and the air felt especially crisp. The sun was warm enough to banish the chill, as well as last night's memories. She smooths out her vest. She had grown so used to wearing a vest and tie in private schools that she felt silly in anything else. However, she wore them now with skinny jeans instead of a pleated skirt. On her small, thin body the thickness of the tie and vest made her look like a doll dressed up for some scholastic themed collection.

History was not her favorite subject, but she excelled in it, like everything else. Now she reviewed her notes, waiting for Jen to come to breakfast before their next classes. Jen sits down already nursing a large mug of coffee. Sadie gets her customery bowl of oatmeal, no coffee. She just didn't like the taste. Jen perks up with coffee, and both girls chat casually over their breakfasts. Sadie doesn't mention anything about last night. In the light of day she is sure it must have been her imagination. A stay cat and her own childish feel of the dark maybe. Such is her mindset when Jen brings up a student event off campus. A mile north of campus a small party was to be held that night. Jen normally would not invite Sadie to a party off campus, knowing her unique situation. This is suppose to be a tame party with plenty of first year students however. Jen figures if Sadie is to have any chance at a social life, she would have to try reguardless of her age. Though well meaning, Jen is perhaps not the most responsible of friends.

Sadie hesitates for a moment. She is not only a minor with a cerfew, but also forbidden to go anywhere with drugs and alcohol present. A sensation of fear spikes in her stomach. Wait, she always follows the rules; every rule. She did more than what was asked of her in everything. She is a model student and exceptional jewel of youth. She went to bed on time, ate well and maintained a clean appearance. Hadn't she earned it? She was so tired of being perfect. She was so angry at being perfect. Is she suppose to live this dull prefectly ordered routine the rest of her life? The thought made breathing difficult.

With a boldness fueled by insolence, Sadie agrees to meet Jen and two other friends to attend.

On the way to the Party she gets the impresson once again that she is being watched and can see just for a secon an Owl that seems made of shadow    in her periphreal vision but when she focuses on it it it isnt there... and a bird made of shadow... things like that cant exist right?

The partys fun enough people are drinking and discussing their futures.

Re: University, by Day or night

In reply to The Uncaring Night (msg # 17):

Sadie sticks close to the handful of girls she arrived with. She was relieved to get out of the dark again, to her embarassment. She just could not shake the feeling of eyes on her, and she kept seeing things the darkness and her mind were twisting into menacing fantasies.

She is painfully shy at first, feeling vastly out of her element. Jen and the two girls Marie and Tiffany all have drinks in their hands. Never before has she felt more like an outsider. Nobody offers her a drink, but she walks by the table set up with a variety of alcohols, beer and assorted snacks. With the same resolution and rebellion that inspired her earlier, she grabs a red plastic cup and fills it with orange juice and vodka. She isn't really sure how much to add of either, but does her best to pretend like she does.

Though she probably looks doe-eyed, she returns to her small circle, sipping her drink. The orange juice does a good job of masking the vodka, but she tries not to make a face as she drinks. Nobody comments on her drink, aside from Jen clinking plastic cups with her.

After an hour Sadie is having trouble following the conversation. The room feels hot and stuffy, so she decides to step outside. Her head feels fuzzy, but she is surprisingly happy. The porch is well lit, and a few people are littered around it, talking and smoking and sipping drinks. The smoke smells heavy, and Sadie wanders out a little further into the large back yard. No lights or fenses mark the end of the yard and the beginning of another one, and after a moment she realizes the yard is back up against an empty field. She spys an old rusted swing set another 50 yards on. It was likely forgotten years ago, before the current residents moved in. Her fear of the dark is completely abscent, she walks out to it and lowers into a seat. Her cheek are flushed and hot, and the breeze feels good on them as she swings.

Inside Jen wonders where Sadie has gotten to. She had taken it as a personal mission to watch her tonight. Probably just in the bathroom. She will look for her in another couple minutes. This party is pretty chill, but you never know what drunk college boys will do.

Re: University, by Day or night

In reply to The Uncaring Night (msg # 19):

Excitedly Sadie jumps off the swing, heading back into the stuffy house to tell Jen about her meeting tomorrow. She stumbles a little on the landing, but she is young and nimble and recovers quickly. The cold air has sobered her up a little. She can't believe her good fortune.

Jen heartily congradulates her with a ferver only a few drinks can induce. Jen insists on one more round of drinks before heading back to the dorms. After all, she can't keep Sadie out to late. Thanks to the last round, Sadie feels no unease or watchers on the walk back. Whether they are there or not, the last drink and company of chatty girls solidly keeps them from imposing on her.

After a noisy enterance, Sadie and Jen curl into their beds. Sadie drifts off pleased with herself. She has done something not only illegal tonight, but more wild than she has ever done. Why is she not mortified?

Sadie's eyes crack open at the sound of her phone's alarm. It is time to get ready for her 7am class. She feels as if she just got over the flu. She rubs the crusty residue from her eyes enough to see her way to the communal bathroom. A hot shower goes a long way to making her feel better, but the light-headedness and fatigue remain. Her routine is far too well oiled to be interrupted by a hangover. She dresses and walks to her class, but an attentive onlooker would certainly notice the lack of spring in her step.

By breakfast Sadie is feeling more like herself. Jen is abscent this morning, which isn't a surprise with the amount she drank the night before. She didn't really expect to see Jen at breakfast this morning.

Sadie only returns to the dorm room after classes are done for the day. She has a full load this term (her parents would expect nothing less), so dusk is only an hour off. She nearly forgot about her meeting during the course of the day. Not like her at all, but understandable under the circumstances. She eats a modest dinner to leave herself time to dress in fresh clothes. Jen is not in the room when she gets in. Tonight she will have to call a taxi, the address she was given is just too far to walk.

Sadie pays the fare displayed on the dash, plus the customery tip. Poverty was not something Sadie had ever worried about. Finances were one of the things her parents took care of for her. As the taxi drives away Sadie pulls out a small piece of paper she had written the gate number on. She has her phone with her, but it never hurt to have a backup. She approaches the gate.

Its a gated community and theirs a guard there who will ask her business

And to her probable answer will say "Piece of advice, take the most direct route to his house, then the most direct route back out, people pay good money to live here and wont take kindly to someone they dont know strolling around leisurely, especialy when its dark"

In reply to The Uncaring Night (msg # 21):

Sadie feels suddenly like she is unwelcome, though she understands the logic of what the gate guard says. Obediently she walks the most direct route. She tries to shake off the feeling that she is in trouble. Whatever interview or dicussion Mr. Wllston is going to conduct will most certainly call for confidence on her part.

She reaches the address, and after a pause walks up to the door. She knocks lightly, unable to summon more than a delicate rap.

Re: University, by Day or night

Most people were drinking and discussing their futures. Killian - who doesn't drink - preferred to discuss the past. He had all kinds of stories for the right kinds of people, when those people can be found. The cool kids - or the cool kids according to Killian, anyway. Actually, getting his attention is a KIND of being cool, in certain circles. Not as many or as large as the kind he could walk in, but then, there's a limit to your popularity when you only ever show up for night classes.

Tonight the crowd was thin, anemic. This wasn't where the real scene was at, for a certain value of 'real'; this was the kind of party even the prep kids could get in on. Where nobody was too likely to end up arrested, or...otherwise unfortunate. A safe place for mice to come and dream they were cats.

Killian was not a cat person.

So when Sadie Jenkins showed up, he perked up, just a little, the same as he did every time someone passed through the front door with that nervous am-I-supposed-to-be-here skitter in their step. When she left early...he followed. No real plan. Not even really hungry so much as curious, just to see...but she didn't head for the dorms. And now he was interested.

Re: University, by Day or night

In reply to The Uncaring Night (msg # 30):

Sadie returns to her dorm room for the first time in two nights. It seems like so much time has passed, as it often does when important events happen in a short span. As soon as she enters Jen rolls out of bed and is on her feet "Where have you been!?". Jen's face is a jumble of worry and anger. "I was going to call the police tomorrow! How could you just take off without saying anything?'.

Sadie tries to sound surprised by Jen's concern, as if her disappearance was totally natural and harmless."I'm sorry Jen, I didn't mean to worry you. I've been staying with a friend.". Jen should be worried, and probably should have called the police already. "Actually I'm going to continue staying with my friend, but I'll be around now and then for a little longer.". Jen looks at her incredulously "And since when have you become such a night owl? A month ago you wouldn't even go out after dark.". "I'm not going to be a 15 year old girl forever you know Jen." Sadie says in mock indignation. She almost ruins it by laughing at a joke Jen couldn't know she made.

Truly Sadie was touched by Jen's concern. Now it had a bitter sweet feel to it. She would not be as close with Jen as she had been. She couldn't be, or Jen would grow too suspicious of these sudden changes in lifestyle. Would Sadie have to kill her if she did? Her Sire had made it very clear revealing her new nature was the worst crime she could commit. She must avoid it at all costs, even if it meant killing. She had enjoyed killing once, even the pain it brought with it. But she would not enjoy killing Jen.

Sadie showered and changed her clothes, reassuring Jen her things would remain in the dorm for now. Except for her stuffed rabbit of course. After being placated, Jen went back to bed. Now Sadie strolled the darkened streets surrounding the campus, looking into the windows of houses. At this hour everyone was asleep, and no lights shown against figures that would betray the details she needed to know.

Eventually Sadie's route circled along the main drag of coffee houses, bars and small businesses that catered to students. Her mind started to wander to the small cabinet in the labs with her pink stuffed rabbit. Soon she would have to retreat to it.

Re: University, by Day or night

In reply to The Uncaring Night (msg # 32):

Sadie wakes in the same position conciousness had fled her in; body curled slightly, rabbit under her arm. The air smelled stale as it had every time she'd awoken here. With not a single moving or breathing body on that entire floor, the air did not so much as stir during the day. She emerges feet first, leaving her rabbit under the bench.

Rumors of a killer on the loose had piqued her curiosity. Aside from trying to establish a haven, she had decided to investigate. She muses that perhaps it could be one or more kindred without the police knowing. The dead girl she had left could have been mistaken as part of the same case. She would have to learn more to guess with more accuracy. She isn't sure what she will do with the information even if she does find the root of the killings. She has nothing but time on her hands until she has to register for night classes at the end of the term. She had already withdrawn from her current courses; making day classes was simply impossible for her. She had never had a period of time where she was not studying, and it felt odd.

Tonight she found she was hungry again. She was frightened she would betray herself, or that if she commanded a mortal to forget her, it wouldn't work. And if it didn't, she would have to kill again to cover her tracks. She remembers her Sire's disapproving frown. She didn't want to displease him.

Sadie entered the small office police on campus and hired security used. She approaches the man seated behind a blue-topped desk. She smiles shyly "Um...hi. I'm with the student paper, and I'm doing a piece about the recent attacks on campus. I'm trying to raise awareness and advise students on how to be safer.". She knows some details are not disclosed to any media, but she feels this is a likely way to get information.
