Chapter 1: The Things We Bury

Wind buffeted the ship as the ramp slowly descended. Stepping down from the ramp, the young Jedi padawans watched as other transports settled into the deep snow. To the north, directly ahead, mountains of ice jutted into the sky, disappearing into the clouds.

The mission on the barren, snowy, unnamed world was simple: Set up a defensive position and prepare for the coming Sith invasion fleet. The path the Sith were taking took them directly through this sector, and the Republic needed a platform to stage attacks on the massive force from. It was here they would make their stand. The padawans were nearing the time of the Testing, when they would be given the rank of Jedi Knight and be welcomed into the fold.

This was their final test.

"What a desolate place this is," Jace Antilles said, pulling his robes tightly around him as he looked out over the frozen terrain.

"Indeed..." Draken responded as he stepped on to the frozen tundra.

Just off the ramp he could feel the icy winds penetrate the cybernetic limb attached at his shoulder. He shuttered at the expansion of metal to flesh but quickly calmed himself, and felt the Force overtake him, controlling the pain.

Winds whipped snow across the transports. In the distance, crews of Republic soldiers unloaded supplies to prepare the encampment.

"What could the Sith want with this place?" Kateri mused, following Jace down the ramp, and looking out at formidable wasteland ahead. "There's nothing here."

She watched as the supply ships landed, filled with materials for a fortress sufficient to defend against the coming onslaught.

"A Planet... a system... a world," Draken spoke quietly hearing "Kate" or as she prefered: "Tri" deal with their upcoming battle in the system.

"Tri, it really doesn't matter where or why these Sith wish to take and conquer. Anything and everything within their scopes will fall to slavery and death regardless of any societal value...

However, we can stop it...We will stop them."

Re: Chapter 1: The Things We Bury
Anjali stooped slightly to exit the vessel and descend the ramp as the others had. He knew in his trunk that Draken was right, the Army of Light would do everything in their power to return the galaxy to balance once again; and the Sith would equally do everything possible to attain their goals. . . Perhaps that itself is the balance that is to come. . .

As his feet touched the frosty chill of the crunchy combination of snow and ice, Anjali's thoughts went instantaneously to the task at hand - defensive positions, paths of advance. . . This was their commission. His darkened vestments flowed around his wooden form as brilliant midday starlight reflected from the golden hued armored plate that Anjali wore upon his brow and had specially crafted in commemoration of his Testing - Alara's uncle truly was an armorsmith beyond compare.

Thane stepped down the landing ramp, hand raised to shield his eyes from the sun and the icy wind.

"The question still bears asking, though. From what I've read, nothing lives here but a few species of cave-dwellers. Even pirates avoid the place. We're too far from the Corellian Trade Spine for this to be a good base for raiding."

He shivered as a fresh blast of wind ripped through his robes as if they weren't there. "Remind me to get something warmer at the camp. And some goggles, too--I'm not ready to be a blind jedi master yet."

Re: Chapter 1: The Things We Bury
Striding towards them across the ice, a robed figure approached the group. It was Johun Othone, a Jedi Knight they knew from their training at the Temple.

"Greetings, padawans," Othone said. "We hope you are prepared for your in-action examination, before you return to Coruscant for your final testing."

"The Republic army is building our defenses. But you are here to sense what the soldiers cannot. Your mission is to scout out the land around us, so that we are prepared for whatever we may face."

"But let us be clear," he added, with a sidelong glance at Draken. "There will be no fighting. If it comes to combat, you will not be a part of it. You are not yet prepared, not until you have proven so by passing your tests."

"Are there any questions?"

Re: Chapter 1: The Things We Bury
"A scouting mission?" Jace asked, shaking his head. "Master, we are Jedi, prepared to face the Trials. Scouting should be for the Republic Scout Corps. They're more suited than us at this." He pulled his hood up over his head to block the snow.
